Reed 3rds successfully defend low total

Rob Willoughby, 39, and Freddie Stuart, top-scoring with 44, put together a partnership of 65 as Reed’s top-order batsmen placed them well at 88 for 1 in the 19th over. But with a mid-order collapse after Morton, (6 for 33), was introduced into the attack, the hosts were reigned back to a disappointing 140 all out. The young Wickramaginghe had chipped-in by taking 3 wickets with his accurate slow bowling too. The Freman College ground is notorious for quick scoring in the right circumstances, so it was important with such a small total to defend for Reed’s bowling to be on target and for the fielders to be athletic in saving the boundaries. “Tips” Baker clutched-on to a sharp chance at wide gulley as Joe Graves’s pace did for one of the openers, then Matt Giblin hit the wicket twice in removing numbers 2 and 3. There followed a period of play when the visitors inched closer to their goal, but veteran swinger Ian Roberts took-up residency and returned 4 batsmen for just 23 runs from 9 challengingly accurate overs. Giblin took a third wicket finishing with 3 for 17 from 9 overs and Owen Hughes made an unflustered contribution in his five-over spell of 2 for 16. Backed-up with some excellent ground fielding and safe catching, Hemel were reduced to 99 all-out giving Reed their first victory in Division 8 and a welcome boost up the league table. Reed (30 points) beat Hemel Hempstead (10 points) by 41 runs.

Useful innings by Robertson and Barlow

Pessimists amongst the Reed ranks looked gloomily at the weather forecast on Saturday morning anticipating a cancellation message and the thought of no play and 10 points for a “No Result”. As it happened, the match started on-time, was not interrupted by rain and was played-out under warm sunshine to its conclusion with Hertford winning by 6 wickets. It poses the question: Is it better NOT to play and get 10 points? Or to play and gain only the 8 bonus points Reed earned for losing the match? Either way, Hertford’s players were happy with 30 points in the bag. Reed did set the reasonably challenging total of 164 with the majority of the runs coming from Michael Robertson who scored 59 and Richie Barlow, 51, in a 4th wicket partnership of 93. The pitch was damp-ish and the length of the grass on the outfield made quick scoring hard work. The bowling too was restrictive and both opening pace bowlers, Ferdenzi, (1 for 16 from 7 overs), and Falkingham, (4 for 25 from 16 overs), we re very competitive. In response, it required Reed to bowl and field well, which generally they did, but with short, square boundaries, the occasional bad deliveries were put away for fours or sixes which consequently made things difficult for the fielders as Hertford neared their target. Once again, Owen Hughes bowled a super length and off-stump line to return figures of 25 runs from 10 overs and being unlucky not to take a wicket. In an unusual move, left-arm slow bowler, Bernie Morss, opened the bowling from the opposite end. Hertford’s opening batsmen made cautious progress until both departed when the score had reached 59. First, wicket-keeper Scott [...]

Team Effort Entertains

The Reed faithful were treated to an exciting game when Reed hosted Ashwell at The Green. It was the first time for several years that Reed had played Ashwell and both sides fielded young and eager teams. The visiting captain won the toss and elected to bat first. A decision he may have regretted when third ball of Ashwell’s innings he was clean bowled by Matt Giblin coming down the hill. Reed proceeded to remove a further two wickets and cut off the runs. Giblin superb spell of 2 for 15 from his 7 overs was well supported by Jack Childs who had started bowling up the hill. First change bowlers Joe Graves and Ed Kershaw continued in the same ilk. Kershaw’s well flighted leg spin looked threatening and was unlucky not to take a wicket. In fact a partnership was starting to be formed between Clark (49) and Deal (49*). A bowling change after the drinks break brought about an end to the stalemate. Scott Caine took two in an over and conceded just 6 runs in his short spell. The final few wickets were shared amongst Kallum Ward (2-0), Owen Hughes (1-10) and a returning Joe Graves (2-26). Reed kept to their usual high standards in the field with some committed saves and catches backing up the bowlers all of which created a difficult time for Ashwell who finished their innings on a bellow par 130 all out. In response Ashwell stood up to the challenge of defending their score with gusto as Reed’s batsman failed to get themselves in. Only Kallum Ward, opening for Reed, looked able to stand up to the visiting attack. Ward hit cleanly to 50 but then fell [...]

Colts training is now in full swing

The Colts training is now in full swing. Well over 50 young cricketers come each week to be trained by our fully qualified coaches. Reed has a long tradition of bringing through our own homegrown talent and our 2012 Yorkshire Tea National Village Cup winning side was made up of 10 players who had come through the Colts ranks. Many of the coaches have also come through the Colts system. We encourage our coaches to take their qualifications so they can pass on their own knowledge with the most up to date methods. Coaching co-ordinator Tom Greaves has been called up to the Hertfordshire 20/20 squad. Along with fellow coach Jack Tidey, both will be representing Hertfordshire Stags this season. We run Under 11, 13 and 15 age groups, all taking part in either the Cambridgeshire or Hertfordshire league. Click here to see the kids in action enjoying a sunny Sunday mornings coaching.

Reed take Premier League Leaders scalp in the County 20/20 Cup.

Reed travelled to Welwyn Garden City's Knightsfield Park on Sunday in third Eastern Group 20/20 County Cup match. Winning the toss skipper Jack Tidey had no hesitation in electing to bat on what looked a good batting strip. Will Heslam fell for 8 in the second over but Reed were accumulating runs at next to 8 an over. Despite losing both Stuart Smith (13) and Sean Tidey (6) the side were well placed for a good score at 45 for 3 after the first six overs. Sam Fairbrother and Tom Greaves then set about building a partnership with some good boundary hitting and quickly taken singles. Fairbrother was the first to go to a lbw decision after making 28 from 22 balls, Michael Robertson soon followed and Reed were 76 for 5 in the 11th over. Mitchell Cooper then joined Greaves and they took the score over three figures, Greaves went for a 35 ball 37. Skipper Tidey then came to the crease and he and Cooper took Reed to the last over, Cooper being stumped for a run a ball 28 including four sixes, Tidey was 16 not out at the close. Reed's final total was 142 for 8. Mercer the pick of The WGC bowlers with 2-0-14-2. In reply Reed opened the bowling with Tom Walsingham (4-0-14-1) and Karl Ward (4-0-15-3), good discipline from both dried up most of the scoring for WGC runs, their skipper Chalker fell to a deep catch by Jack Caine off of Ward, fellow opener Byford went in the next over to a superb caught and bowled from Walsingham, 17 for 2. Ward then removed two batsmen in his next over and WGC were 21 for 4. Mottershead [...]

‘Little Reed’ fall short

Saturday saw the return to Hertfordshire Championship League action for Reed against West Herts at The Green. Reed were without Captain, James Heslam but welcomed new signing Alex Mutucumarana to the side since his move from Camden Cricket Club. Tom Greaves took on the role of leading Reed and started positively by winning the toss and inserting West Herts on a green and slightly damp surface. The blossoming partnership of Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey opened the bowling for Reed and it was Fynn who took the first wicket, trapping K. Farrell LBW for 10 in the 5th over. Jack Tidey then got in on the act, picking up the wicket of fellow opener A. Lewis for 9 after he snicked one behind to Reed ‘keeper Sean Tidey. M Smith (50) came to the crease and looked to set about the Reed bowling with purpose. However, after a sharp caught and bowled chance went down, his positive stroke play backfired on his team mate, as another tough caught and bowled chance for Jack Tidey was turned onto the non-strikers stumps; running out A.Maine for just 1. 38-3 soon became 38-4 as the classy Fynn (10-3-33-2) picked up his second wicket. D. Hodges was brilliantly caught behind by Sean Tidey. Another impressive outing for Fynn who is showing Reed just they had been missing after his long spell on the side-line through injury. Spinners Tom Greaves and Sam Fairbrother were soon bowling in tandem and were troubling the batsmen whilst keeping the run rate down. It was Greaves who made the breakthrough after having the vocal C. Sanders (19) expertly caught at first slip by Reed stalwart Chris Jackson. Fairbrother picked up the wicket of A. [...]

Reed Reap Revenge

Reed confirmed their place in the Hertfordshire Area Final of the Davidstow National Village Cup with an impressive win over rivals Wheathampstead on Sunday afternoon. After the defeat against them last year, Reed were determined not to fall to the same fate and stormed to a six wicket victory. Captain James Heslam won the toss and chose to field on a slightly green deck after the large quantity of rain which saw the previous day’s game cancelled. This soon proved to be a great decision as the economical Jack Tidey (9-2-22-2) and once again impressive Tobey Fynn (9-1-36-4) made early inroads into the Wheathampstead top order. Fynn took the first of the Reed wickets trapping Griffiths plumb LBW for just 2 and Hashmi caught behind by S Tidey for 8. Tidey then got his first wicket soon after by cleaning up McEwan for 1, leaving the visitors struggling at 11-3 Things didn’t improve for Wheathampstead as they lost more quick wickets with Fynn bowling both Griffiths and Potter for 11 and 4 retrospectively, leaving them 25-5. Tidey then bowled Kiek for just 8 leaving the visitors massively struggling on 31-6. Wheathamsptead then offered some resistance through Walayat who played aggressively on his way to 42. He was supported by Booth (8) who managed to frustrate and keep the reed attack at bay. With Booth regularly playing and missing to Ward (4-1-9-0). Booth eventually was cleaned bowled by the ever impressive Greaves (9-1-22-2). Walayat continued to be aggressive and was supported by Dabare (12). But Walayat was eventually spectacularly caught by keeper S Tidey after he top edged the ball over the keeper s head off of the bowling of Cooper (7.3-1-43-2). This left Wheathampstead in [...]

Promising signs despite defeat

Whilst Reed hosted two teams in a 20/20 double bill, they also sent over a second eleven to face Aston in a friendly fixture. Aston batted first and started slowly as Jack Childs and Joe Graves sent down good opening spells. Pippa Wisdom making her debut for the clubs adult sides came on first change replacing Graves coming down the hill. She immediately started with a good line and picked up the first wicket thanks to a nimble catch by Reed captain Marcus J.E. Baker behind the stumps. Mike Robertson, replacing Childs, also got into a nice rhythm and didn’t make it easy for the hosts with some fierce bounce and movement. Robertson would take 3 wickets for 23 before making way for the returning Childs and Graves. Wisdom took a second before Zak Conley came on and eventually struck twice. Tom Walsingham wrapped up the tail quickly with two wickets in his single over as Reed bowled out Aston for 162. After tea, Peter G. Baker and Tom Walsingham made a rapid start scoring freely. However, a sudden upset came when Baker (19) lost his balance mid way through a shot and was stumped as he stumbled. Mike Robetson (20),Walsingham (31) and M.J.E. Baker (32) tried regaining the initiative with some fantastic shots but each batsman fell prematurely and Reed finished all out for 116.

Champions overpower 1st XI

Reed entertained last year’s First Division champions Hertford in their match at The Green on Saturday. Reed bowling first were a little wayward in their first four overs conceding 26 runs. Then Jack Tidey found his radar bowling the Hertford skipper Gale for 22 leaving them on 27 for 1, Bailey joined the other opener Ray and they kept the scoreboard ticking over until Ray fell to Toby Fynn (10-3-38-3) at 59. Hertford’s batsmen including an Australian state overseas player were all getting good starts but not building on them. Cook though was the exception his 65 was the standout for Hertford and although extras was the next top scorer with 34, Hertford made 213 off of 47.3 overs. Fynn and Kallum Ward (3-0-9-2) the pick of Reed’s bowlers. James and Will Heslam gave Reed a solid start in reply. Will fell to an lbw decision leaving Reed on 32 for 1, skipper James fell soon after and when Sam Fairbrother fell to a caught and bowled Reed were wobbling at 40 for 3. Tom Greaves and Kallum Ward looked to steady matters but once Greaves fell to Cook, now getting in on the bowling act and Marcus Martin not troubling the scorer, left the Home Team 61 for 5 in the 19th over. Sean Tidey and Kallum Ward knew they needed to stay together to bring Reed back into the match and they did, but when Ward fell for a gutsy 22 and Tidey for 38 Reed were now 121 for 7 with only Mitchell Cooper holding out for 27, Reed were all out 150 in the 38th over.
