The pitch was the winner!

Reed IV have been steadily accumulating points in the League largely because opposing clubs have conceded matches. Not an ideal situation for those wishing to play cricket so it was welcome that this match against Hertford’s 5th XI was actually played-out on the field. Reed never came to terms with the unpredictable bounce of the Aspenden village green pitch and their first four batsmen all succumbed to the excellent bowling of 12-year-old Jack Timms who in his amazing five-over spell had figures of four for four! The young Matt Riddle opened the bowling with him and although not taking a wicket also had economic figures of 0 for 11 from his five overs. Two other Colts, Hugh Cavener and Max Lawrance, also took three wickets each when it was their turn to bowl and Reed’s innings ended at 78 all-out with Chris West top-scoring with 18, the only batsman to reach double figures on what is a relatively small ground. Deciding to begin the reply before tea, Hertford’s top order also wilted in the sultry conditions and when the interval came after 15 overs they were at a precarious 28 for 6. Owen Hughes, 3 for 9, and Joe Graves, 3 for 17, inflicting the damage. The youngsters, Max Lawrance and Jack Timms, then simply showed everyone how they should have coped with the conditions and added runs without any due concern. A couple of chances went begging, but these two batted very well and confidently by putting together an undefeated fifty partnership which overhauled Reed’s total in only a further ten overs.

Storm puts Reeds Village Cup dreams on hold!

Reeds National Village Cup dreams were dampened late on Sunday afternoon when their National Quarter Final match with Buckinghamshire Champions Dinton CC was cruelly washed away by one of the fiercest downpours seen at Reed in many a long year. The match had reached the halfway point on a warm and mainly sunny afternoon but as the players enjoyed a sumptuous traditional Cricket Tea in the Reed Pavilion the sky darkened and menacing storm clouds gathered. Batting second Reeds reply did start but as Reed skipper James Heslam smoothly struck the first ball to the mid wicket boundary for 4 the rain started and the players and Umpires fled the field, unfortunately never to return to bowl another ball! Earlier, with the magnificent Reed ground looking an absolute picture, a crowd of around 350 had witnessed a hard fought and high quality encounter. Dinton having won the toss chose to bat first and their openers exhibited a calm confidence and played some fluent strokes. The Reed opening attack of Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn however stuck to their task and supported by the usual incredibly efficient Reed ground fielding runs were hard to come by. In the 6th Over Toby Fynn induced an outside edge from opener Woodward and Sean Tidey snaffled the catch 11-1. In Fynns next over No 3 Gibbins was bowled for 4 and when his replacement Massey was also caught behind, by Tidey, Dinton were in trouble at 27-3 off 11.2 overs. Meanwhile opener Smith had looked solid and assured and joined by No 5 Burrows the pair started constructing a solid recovery. At the 20 over halfway mark in the visitors innings the score stood at 74–3, honours now fairly [...]

Reed come off 2nd best in testy top of the table encounter

This top of the Hertfordshire Championship table encounter promised a feast of Cricket with unbeaten Hertford hosting second placed Reed who had won their last 6 league matches in a row. However, what could have been an “upset” result was mired in controversy and for the 2nd time in 2 seasons Reed came away from Hertford as losers and feeling hard done by as key decisions seemingly again turned the match away from the “junior” Club playing away against a senior County Club on their own ground. Reed won the toss and elected to field first. Hertford skipper Gale soon went caught and bowled by Jack Tidey but then Bailey 36 and Ray 29 took Hertford to 67 before Bailey was well caught by Reed skipper James Heslam off Tom Greaves for 36. Cliff Caverner joined Ray and the Hertford total progressed to 90 before Tom Greaves induced 2 wickets in 2 balls reducing the home side to 90-4. At 128 Caverner was dismissed also caught off Greaves for 21 and when Gethin-Golder went for a duck, giving Greaves his 4th wicket, with the total 137-6 in the 33rd over Hertford were in serious trouble. It was at this point that Hertford No 6 Ruskin, an acknowledged fine batsman but on 0 at the time went back to a ball from Jack Tidey and was hit shin high, seemingly in front of all 3 stumps. The perception was a plumb LBW but it was not to be granted in Reeds favour, a decision that gave rise to some Reed incredulity, later to be deemed formal “dissent”. The key dismissal not having been awarded, Ruskin joined by No 8 Bancroft began to score freely against the [...]

Fynn-tastic Reed

Toby Fynn produced a superb spell of bowling to keep Reed well placed in 2nd in the Hertfordshire Championship. After rain later in the week, Reed skipper James Heslam had no hesitation in winning the toss and choosing to bowl against 2nd bottom Old Finchleians at the Reed Green. The wicket offered some seam movement but was still a good cricket wicket. However Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey produced an excellent opening partnership. Fynn this week though was the destroyer bowling with pace and seam. Helped by some excellent catching behind the stumps by Sean Tidey, Heslam and Garrott, Fynn soon had Old Finchleians in serious trouble at 15-5. The pressure was relentless from the Reed bowlers and fielders and the visitors subsided to 29 all out, a club record for Reed in terms of bowling out an opposition extraordinarily before Lunch in the new format of the Hertfordshire Championship. Fynn ended up with amazing figures of 7-7-7 and Tidey 8-16-2 in support. In reply Reed easily knocked off the 30 runs required to win with Sam Fairbrother leading the way with a fluent 22 not out. Reed have a big weekend ahead where they take on 1st placed Hertford on the Saturday where the Reed side will be hoping to take a big step to securing 2nd place by getting their 7th league win in a row before Sunday’s National Village Cup Quarter Final at Reed vs Southern area winners Dinton CC.

Table Topping Reed Win Again

Reed 2nd XI stretched their lead at the top of SHCL Division 6 after another convincing win, this time away to Old Cholmeleians. After overnight rain Marcus Martin had little hesitation in inviting the hosts to bat upon winning the toss. The early signs showed what a good toss to win this was, as the hard new ball was misbehaving on numerous occasions, leading to Reed taking a firm grip of the proceedings from the outset. Youngster Jack Caine was first to strike as he bowled the Cholmeleians opener in only the 4th over. Pete Tidey also caused problems for the home side as he picked up 3 wickets before the returning Rupert Martin soon saw Reed in complete control with the score 28-5. Some resistance from the Cholmeleians middle order, which coincided with the ball getting older and going softer allowed the home team to edge towards three figures, but the introduction of Reece Fitzgerlad who again picked up a ‘2fa’ after a superb burst from Rupert Martin soon put an end to the innings for only 95. The balding paceman Martin took 4 wickets in this, his first game back after 7 months attempting to grow his hair in the warmer climes of Australia. In reply Reed’s openers Richard Johnson and Matt Bowles faced an equally tough task against the new ball as the pitch continued to misbehave. Both batsmen were circumspect to begin with before Johnson fell victim to the pitch, gloving the ball through to the ‘keeper. Bowles was looking more fluent and struck some powerful shots before he too was caught, this time to a ball that seemed to get stuck in the pitch for 14. Rob Lankester came in [...]

Dogged innings from Rhodri but Sunday’s Friendly XI were outplayed

Utilising their membership of the Club Cricket Conference for the third successive week, Reed’s Sunday Friendly XI were paired-off with visitors Harrow St. Mary’s who were willing to make the journey from the north-west area of London. Played on the fairly docile pitch at Reed Village Green, the opening flurry went to HSM’s Australian player but in Matt Giblin’s second over, both openers perished in identical fashion by being caught at mid-on by the dependable Ollie Mansfield. HSM rebuilt their innings but two further wickets saw them at 58 for 4 in the fifteenth over after the Two Jacks, Childs and Tidey, had claimed one apiece. Tidey, skippering the side in the absence of “Mario” Baker, kept the scorers busy by alternating the eight bowlers at his disposal in short spells. At the halfway stage, the score was 101 for 4, but the fifth wicket partnership gained momentum and accelerated the scoring rate. Tidey, having been at reduced pace in his earlier spell, eventually returned to the attack and bowled more aggressively extracting extra bounce and doing enough to clip the bails of top-scorer, Louw, (87), to break the partnership after 122 had been added in only 14 overs. After that, Reed managed to restrict the run-rate somewhat and the younger bowlers tasted success with Tom Nussey taking 2 for 16 and Ollie Mansfield 1 for 31. Matt Yates had bowled a testing spell of gentle seamers but was unlucky not to take a wicket. In addition to Mansfield’s two catches, Richard Johnson safely pouched two catches at mid-off before Tom Nussey caught one at mid wicket in the last over as Harrow St. Mary’s closed their innings at 243 for 8. A. Prevost was [...]

4-man Attack Too Hot For Hatfield Hyde To Handle

Hatfield Hyde won the toss and elected to bat, on a hot sunny day with what appeared to be a good pitch for batting. Reed opened the bowling with Matt Giblin, who hit the right lines from ball one and immediately got the ball to swing in the air. Alan Ward opened the bowling from the other end, and the combination greatly restricted Hatfield's run scoring in the opening overs. The first wicket fell at 14-1, in the eleventh over, caught by Owen Hughes at mid on, after the Hatfield openers got frustrated with their low run rate. Owen Hughes replaced Giblin after his opening spell, and also bowled impressive lines, with movement away from the right handed batsmen. After rebuilding their innings to 51-1, Hughes picked up two cruicial wickets in quick succession, both caught off his bowling, including an impressive reaction catch at square leg from Bowman. Hughes Finished with superb figures of 6-2-14-2. Bernie Morss was was the second change, replacing Alan Ward. Adding some variation to the attack, he also bowled very tight lines, including 5 maidens within his 12.3 over spell. Morss picked up 3 wickets, ending with figures of 12.3-5-16-3. The catch of the day went to Alan Ward off his own bowling- Hatfield's number 7 absolutely nailed a straight drive back to Ward, who realised it best to catch the ball to avoid an inevitable broken rib. Giblin picked up a further 2 wickets in his second spell, ending with solid figures of 14-4-26-3. Hatfiled ended on 83 all-out, with the final wicket coming as a run-out. In reply, Reed opened the batting with Rob Willoughby and Rhodri Hughes. They got off to a slow start, as the [...]

Disappointment Despite Potential On Show

Reed gave a rather poor account for themselves with the bat when they succumbed to Roydon. Chasing 226 Reed failed to show any of the potential and ability they all have. Earlier the visiting Roydon played a steady innings with major contributions from Gooch (49), Sanderson (58) and Hitch (50*). Zak Conley (2 for 37) and Graeme Stuart (3 for 52) took the major wickets supported by Joe Graves (1 for 49) and Freddy Stuart (1 for 15). Also Owen Hughes, despite wicket-less, bowled a superb line and length and proved hard to get away. Catches were taken by Hughes, Graves, Craig Brown and Lloyd Bowman. Meanwhile Ben Moody did a superb job behind the stumps. After tea, a steady procession of wickets led up to Reed being bowled all out for just 82. Marcus J.E. Baker (18), Bowman (22), Hughes (16) and Graves (10) making contributions.

2nd XI March On

Reed's 2nd XI quest for successive promotions marched on in style when they visited Letchworth 3s on Saturday. The early rain cleared and the hosts elected to bat on what looked a belting pitch, as Reed opened up the bowling with the evergreen Peter Tidey and young seemer Jack Caine. Caine started impressively, removing the dangerous looking opener with a impressive delivery. Tidey was keeping things tight from the other end, and pressure gradually mounted on the Letchworth batsmen resulting in Phil Frenay completing a stunning run out to leave the hosts 30-2. Tidey then got in on the act taking 2 wickets as Reed began to strangle their hosts. However, a solid partnership ensued and Letchworth were able to steadily make their way into 3 figures. The fast outfield, old ball and increasingly flat track made runs easier to come by as Reed's bowlers began to toil. Karl Ward and Tidey continued plugging away, but it was the introduction of young spinner Reece Fitzgerald that did the trick as he stemmed the flow of runs and snared a couple of wickets. This allowed Reed to expose the Letchworth tail end, and Tidey was able to pick up 2 further wickets as the hosts reached their allotted 53 overs with a solid looking 202-8. Reed opened up with Phil Frenay and Matt Bowles as they set about chasing down the large total. Frenay began in fine style, continuing his recent good form by finding the boundary with ease. He was well supported by Bowles as they negotiated the new ball and progressed the score to 50 before Bowles was caught in stunning fashion, trying to work the ball into the leg side. Undeterred, and now [...]

Tidey Rips Through Flitwick

On saturday Reed travelled to Flitwick hoping to make it 5 league wins on the bounce. Reeds afternoon started poorly when captain James Heslam lost the toss and reed were asked to bat first. Openers Will Heslam and Sam Fairbrother started well reaching 24 before Heslam (6) was caught at square leg. 24-1 became 24-2 the very next ball as Flitwicks overseas Ricky Joseph surprised Kallum Ward with a quick bouncer which he could only glove through to the keeper. Fairbrother was now joined by captain James Heslam they quickly set about rebuilding the reed innings before Fairbrother (28) became Josephs third victim. Heslam (27) followed shortly after leaving Reed at 83-4. Stuart Smith (5) was the next man out caught by Twist off the bowling of Joseph and reed looked in real danger at 105-5. Tom Greaves and Ed Garrott knew they had to form a partnership and together with good running and the occasional boundary they reached 140 before Greaves was dismssed by Ellis for and impressive 44. Garrott followed shortly after and Reed were now 141-7. Sean and Jack Tidey added 11 before jack (10) was bowled by Twist (11-1-48-3). Reed looked in trouble yet again but a partnership of 36 for the 9th wicket between Sean Tidey (22) and Mitchell Cooper (15) frustrated Flitwick. Cooper departed in the last over before Tidey was run out off the last ball of the innings leaving reed 190 all out in their 44 overs. In reply, reed started well with Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn taking the new ball. Tidey struck with his second ball as Russell left a straight delivery. 4-1 was 18-2 a few overs later as Fynn (6-0-21-1) found the edge [...]
