REED TWOS KEEP MARCHING ON TOGETHER

On Saturday Reed 2nds travelled down the A10 towards Enfield to take on Holtwhites Trinibis 2nds. With the teams at opposite ends of the table, nothing but a win was acceptable for the away side in their push for promotion. Reed skipper Ed Garrott won his first toss of the season and opted to bat first on what looked like a good pitch. With usual openers Frenay and Barlow missing, Garrott promoted himself and opened the batting alongside Richard ‘Tonza’ Johnson. The pair looked steady, taking regular quick singles and putting the bad ball away to the boundary, before Garrott inside edged Weston on to his stumps for 13. With the score on 24 in came Chris Jackson who alongside Johnson kept the scoreboard ticking over at a steady rate until Johnson fell for a well-made 41 and Reed were 89-2 from 21 overs. George Teeboon was promoted to number 4 for his first bat of the season. 240 looked to be par and Teeboon and Jackson started to take the attack to the Holtwhites’ bowlers, both presented opportunities but the home side’s fielding was poor and they couldn’t hold on to their catches. Jackson made them pay passing 50 and Teeboon hit some nice boundaries until trying one big shot too many, he was eventually caught for 45. Reed were 182-3 from 39 overs when Mitchell Cooper strode to the crease. Cooper and Jackson both knew they had to score quickly if they were to post a defendable total and they did just that. Firsts overrun Old Owens

Once again Reed 1st XI faced a team weakened by players away on a stag party and once again they cruised to victory as a result. Having inserted Owens, Reed must have been worried when Jordan Carter took 3 boundaries from Jack Tidey's second over, but Tidey had the last laugh bowling him for 18. This was sandwiched between Ed Wharton dispatching the dangerous Chris Whitworth and Rob Lane, leaving their opponents 31 for 3. This rapidly became 39 for 6 as Reed's seam opening attack claimed all 6 wickets. Tidey was eventually withdrawn following a blow to the shoulder with figures of 10-3-32-3. In his place, skipper, Tom Greaves (2-17) tempted overseas star, Usama Mir, to go for broke, which he did to the tune of 28 at over a run a ball. However, when he went for one hit too many, Sean Tidey took a steepler on the boundary and Owens slipped to 89-9. Some lusty blows by Jack Bloxham (16 not out) took them into three figures, but Wharton returning 14-6-41-5 cleaned up the tail. With just 106 needed, Reed looked like steaming to victory with Ed Wharton (27) and Zac McGuigan (40) hitting a dozen boundaries between them. However when the former was bowled and the latter run out, even Rob Lankester (11) could not kick on, despite one towering maximum, thanks to some wily spin bowling from Mir (11-6-16-1). Gradually though, James Heslam (12 not out) and the returning Mike Catt (14 not out) edged to a comfortable 7 wicket win, which moves Reed up to second in the league, overtaking Shenley Village. Closer than you would think!

Week 10 of the League season was the start of the return matches. In week 1 on the Freman Oval, Frogmore had been dismissed for 41 and a relatively strong Reed Third team had won by 10 wickets. This time, Frogmore showed much more steel as they reached a more imposing 192 for 9 in their 45 overs. Tony Albon was the backbone of the innings with 84 not out. Steve Hughes and Matt Yates had taken 2 wickets each before Mike Robertson, showing more control, bagged 3 for 29 in 7 overs. There was even time for PG Baker to add a wicket to his tally in his first spell of bowling in a League match for 4 seasons. Without last week’s centurion, Richard Johnson, (promoted), and his fellow opener, Rob Willoughby, (unavailable), who between them had accrued almost 160 runs, the Reed innings began with Paul Garrott and Baker and they scored almost 13 runs (well, 12 actually)! Stepping-up once more was Mike Robertson at number 3 who in partnership with Rhodri Hughes, (23), put-on 109 for the third wicket. The momentum was with Reed and Jon Braine (5) supported Robertson by adding a further 36 together. But at 164 with still another 29 required both fell, Robertson immediately after reaching his second century of the season. There followed a period of 8 overs when only 9 runs were scored and one more wicket lost. Reed were definitely under pressure. Then inexplicably, Readings who at that stage had figures of 0 for 13 off 6 overs (including three maidens), bowled a wide then two high full-tosses (both hit to the boundary by Joe Graves) and conceded another four and Reed were almost home [...]

Headlines; Week ending 14th July

SATURDAY (SHPCL): A good day for all three teams. The Firsts knocked over Old Owens for 105 then lost only 3 wickets in the successful run chase. Ed Wharton had taken 5 wickets and Jack Tidey three. Zac McGuigan top scored for Reed with 40. A very good day for Chris Jackson who made an unbeaten ton in the Second's 297 for 3. Mitchell Cooper had an equally good day; a sixty not out followed by 4 wickets! Holtwhites were all out for 99. Yet another good day down at Frogmore for Mike Robertson who also scored a century in the Third's victory and had taken 3 wickets in Frogmore's innings of 192 for 9. Reed won by 3 wickets. In the Championship Division, Reed are in 2nd place, 7 points behind Hoddesdon. Weirdly, The Seconds are also in 2nd position, 7 points behind leaders Watford Town in Division 4B. The Thirds lay 5th in Div 10A 52 points adrift. SUNDAY (Herts County T20 Cup): Reed were drawn against Finals day hosts, Radlett, but could not prevent them reaching 139 for 7 in the first Semi-Final. Jack Tidey, Toby Fynn and Zac McGuigan claimed 2 wickets each. McGuigan's 21 was Reed's top score in their reply of 58. Reportedly Totteridge Millhillians pulled out of the second Semi-Final, leaving Radlett to battle the Final out with Hertford. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

Johnson hits match-winning 124

Reed 3rds picked up another valuable 30 points following their away game against Ickleford 3rd XI. Winning the toss, Reed elected to bowl, opening up with Prash Ramaraj (9-0-48-1) and Steve Hughes (9-1-42-0). Ickleford openers Howard (13) and Dermont (103) created a good platform for the innings, however Ramaraj struck, bowling Howard. Following the loss of a wicket, Ickleford upped their run rate, with Whelan (56) repeatedly finding the boundary, despite a very tidy spell from Matt Naeem (9-1-51-0). Whelan finally fell to Mike Robertson (7-1-43-1) when the pitch made a shorter ball rather unplayable. Cheeseman (49 not out) continued to build the total as Dermont opened up, hitting runs with aplomb. Oli Sayers (5-0-33-0) was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket with balls dropping short of fielders, however it was Rob Willoughby (4-0-28-1) finally had Dermont caught by keeper Bill Mansfield. Jupp (10 not out) joined Cheeseman see out the rest of the innings with Ickleford finishing their 45 overs on 278 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Reed’s openers Willoughby (34) and Richard Johnson started steadily, putting together a partnership of 76 before youngster Ollie Ellis-Holmes (6-0-47-1) caught Willoughby off his own bowling. The Reed batsmen continued to plug away, with Peter Baker (44) settling in at the crease and Johnson showing great temperament and skill. Another solid partnership of 124 was built, before Baker was trapped LBW by Ickleford skipper Howard (7-0-70-1). With 79 needed from 9 overs, the Reed batsmen still had a great deal of work to do. Under 13 round-up

Some recent matches involving the Reed Under 13 team did not go in our favour. The Under 13s made 94 for 4 in response to Cambridge St Giles’s 126 for 3 in the CYCA Cup. Oliver Keenan and Sam Osborne took 1 wicket each, (with one being a catch by Charlie Walters) and the other dismissal was a run out by James Mitchell. Back in the League against St Giles, Reed under-performed this time managing only 61 all out whilst St Giles had reached 123 for 5, William Green 2 for 1, Charlie Butler 2 for 9 and Alfie Cockburn 1 for 13, being the wicket takers. The Under 13s scored 58 for 8 against Coton, Charlie Butler (16) and Olu Agboola (19) were the top scorers. However, Coton’s innings ended on 115 for 6, William Archer taking 2 for 15 and Olu, Matthew Liebenberg, William Green and Alfie Cockburn all 1 each. In the two fixtures against Saffron Walden, Reed were in distant second place both times. On the Green, Saffron Walden scored 107 for 8, wickets falling to William Green (2 for 14), and one each for Charlie Walters, Archie McIntosh, Alfie Cockburn, Jacob Vincent and Matthew Liebenberg. But Reed were bowled out for only 38 in reply. A week later in the away match, Saffron Walden piled up 158 for 5, wickets for Charlie Walters, Charlie Butler and Alfie Cockburn plus a Butler run out. Reed’s response was led by Alfie Cockburn with 22, but closed on 62 for 8. On Monday, St Giles had a 10-wicket victory when Reed were bowled out for 80 despite a fighting 38 from Archie McIntosh. Reed were the greatest showmen at Ampthill!

Although unbeaten as captain of the second team, Ed Garrott is yet to win a toss as skipper, and consequently Ampthill elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. The Ampthill openers started up well, and quite quickly reached 31 without loss. Giblin then with a ball, somewhere in the fine boundary between a long hop and a bouncer, surprised the Ampthill opener who skied the ball, which was well caught at point by Paul Garrott. Giblin shortly after claimed the second opener, caught, to swing the game back in Reed’s favour. From this point on, the game remained firmly in Reed’s control, with Ward unlucky not to have been rewarded for his efforts opening up. Spin twins Matt Bowles, and soon after, Ed Garrott replaced the opening attack, and further applied the pressure to Ampthill. Appropriate was the ‘Greatest Showman’ soundtrack being heard from the neighbouring Ampthill Festival, as both spinners rattled through their overs, and the Ampthill batting line up. Aided by some top-level catching from Chris Jackson at slip, both claimed 3 wickets a piece. 2 late runs outs left the hosts all out for 97, with just 32 overs bowled. Promoted from the 3rds after his recent good form, Paul Garrott certainly didn’t look out of place leading the Reed response with Richard Barlow. Both batted freely, continuing their recent form to add 60 for the first wicket. When Garrott fell bowled for 22, it was left to Jackson and Barlow to finish the game off, playing some fine shots to reach the target in the 19th over. Match Report submitted by Matt Giblin.

Big Jack bags six!

Reed welcomed Kent champions, Borstal, in the sixth round of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Batting first after losing the toss, Borstal's openers were quickly into their stride and were 34 in the sixth over with James Whitnell looking particularly threatening on 25 exhibiting some handsome drives. But it was Jack Tidey bowling uphill who struck by having Pound caught behind for 10 then Thomas Tingley clean bowled next ball for 0. Daniel Tingley followed in Tidey's next over, again caught by wicket keeper Richard Wharton for 1. Wharton went on to take three more catches, one a spectacular left handed take down the leg side off Tidey. His other catches being off Toby Fynn and Tom Greaves. By the time Jack Tidey finished his eight-over spell his figures were 6 for 21 ensuring that Borstal were beyond rescue. Mortimore had a bit of a dart at Mitchell Cooper's bowling but perished for 20 caught by Jack Caine to give Greaves his second wicket, (2 for 14), and Cooper adding a wicket of his own. Borstal all out for 83 in the 23rd over. Although aiming at a small target, Reed did not have it all their own way when both Wharton and Sean Tidey were back in hutch with only 20 on the board. Rob Lankester and James Heslam batted sensibly until Lankester failed to execute a reverse sweep and was bowled for 30 when the Reed score was on 54. Stuart Smith joined Heslam and they drew closer to the Borstal total, but with only 3 required, Smith mistimed a lofted drive and was caught at mid-on for 15. Headlines; Week ending 7th July

SUNDAY - National Village Cup: Jack Tidey was on fire taking six Borstal wickets for only 21 runs in his 10 overs. The visitors from Kent were dismissed for 83. After the loss of a couple of cheap wickets, Reed coasted home by 6 wickets, Rob Lankester, 30, and James Heslam, 17 not out. SATURDAY (SHPCL): Yes, in a blink of an eye, we are halfway through the Herts League season. At this stage, the Firsts are 3rd in the Championship Division, the Seconds 2nd in 4B, and the Thirds 5th in Div 10A. On the Green, the 1st XI posted 189 for 9, Ed Wharton, Jack Tidey and Rich Wharton accumulating scores in the late- thirties but Reed failed to prevent Hoddesdon winning by 5 wickets. At Ampthill, Matt Bowles and Ed Garrot with 3 wickets each helped restrict the hosts to 97 all out. Rich Barlow passed 30 and accompanied by Chris Jackson's score in the twenties, and by Paul Garrott's 22, Reed 2nd XI eased home by 9 wickets. The Thirds had a more challenging objective once Ickleford had scored 278 for 3. It wasn't a bowler's day as Reed reached their target in the 43rd over having lost only 2 wickets along the way. Richard "Jess" Johnson was sublime hitting 124 not out, and was well supported by opener, Rob Willoughby's 34, P.G. "Tips" Baker's 44 and Mike Robertson's 51 not out. Broodryk century defeats Reed 1sts

A century partnership between South African Jayden Broodryk (105 not out) and Todd Sturdy (54) turned the game Hoddesdon's way after they lost their first 3 wickets for just 12 runs. On a dry wicket which encouraged movement and spin, they were the only batsmen to really play themselves in, although they survived a number of close calls and several half chances. After Ed Wharton (1-19) and Jack Tidey (2-34) made those early breakthroughs, Reed were frustrated and even spin twins Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey could only muster a wicket apiece as their opposition raced to their target at 5 runs an over. Having won the toss, Reed struggled on the surface to match their customary scoring rate, despite Ed Wharton's flamboyant 39. Hoddesdon's bowlers: Bill Thorne (2-44), James Curtis (4-63) from 20 overs apiece and Harry Mason with 2-24 made them have to work for their runs and wickets fell at regular intervals. At lunch. on 94-6, a low total was on the cards, but a gritty 37 by Richard Wharton and more fluent 24 by Jack Caine gave the innings respectability. However, the unbeaten last wicket partnership of 40 between Jack Tidey (39 not out) and Toby Fynn (11 not out) took the score to 188-9, making Reed more hopeful at the break. Broodryk's imperious century denied them and with Shenley Village losing, it took Hoddesdon back to the top of the table. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.
