Pick-up from Meldreth Railway Station at 8:15 a.m. then Royston Bus Station at 8:30 a.m. 2. Pick-up from Reed Village Hall at 8:15 a.m. then the BP fuel station / Woolpack Vets at the roundabout on the A507 / Buntingford by-pass at 8:30 a.m. and in Baldock Market Place at 8:50 a.m. After the match, the coaches will depart at 6:00 p.m. from the North Gate of Lord’s Cricket Ground. Reed are going back to Lord’s !

2012 Village Cup champions Reed took on Oxfordshire outfit Aston Rowant in a relatively low scoring tie with Reed emerging victorious. Batting first, home side Reed, captained by Tom Greaves, found it difficult to score quickly on a pitch that enticed Aston Rowant’s bowlers to find the outside edge of the Reed batsmen. Will Heslam, brother of former captain James Heslam, was out cheaply for 6 to A-R opening bowler Whatman and Rob Lankester fell soon after, leaving Reed floundering on 13-2. Rebuilding up until drinks, Reed were 65-3 with most of those coming off the bat of Richard Wharton who exuded a sense of calm whilst at the crease, scoring elegantly both sides of the wicket. When left arm spinner Alexander Barras dismissed Wharton, who fell two short of his half-century, with another of his well-directed darts, the score lay at 87-4. Becoming increasingly aware that the game may be slipping away from them, the middle order came out all guns blazing, especially the Tidey brothers and captain Greaves. By the time Greaves departed on 48, he had notched five sixes and taken Reed’s score to 164, a much-needed captain’s innings. With late runs coming courtesy of Karl Ward and Jack Tidey, both scoring 11 quickly accumulated runs, Reed finished on 179-9. Despite at times struggling with Reed’s sloping pitch, Aston Rowant restricted Reed to a potentially below par score. With swathes of fans watching on, Aston Rowant openers Tim Morgan (their captain) and Alex Jewell walked to the middle after tea with the clouds rolling in. Reed go top!

Reed won their tenth league match of the season against a winless Botany Bay to go top of the Championship for the first time this year. Ed Wharton (2-38) and Jack Tidey (1-42) reduced the home side to 21-3, but a feisty stand of 80 between Husnane Shah (55) and Qaisir Shah (52) with 19 x 4’s and 3 x 6’s put Reed on the back foot. However, for the second time in a month, Mitchell Cooper (10-4-29-5) destroyed the middle order, including the half centurions. With the ‘spin twins’, Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey, taking a wicket apiece, Botany Bay collapsed to 161 all out. Once again, pinch hitter, Ed Wharton, smashed the opening attack to all parts of the ground, scoring 61 from 33 balls . Qaisir Shah went for 50 in 4 overs, but came back to take 4-88 bowling throughout the innings. It took a carefully built 45 not out from Rob Lankester to anchor Reed’s reply and an entertaining cameo of 19 not out from Richard Wharton steered them to a satisfying 5 wicket victory. Headlines; Week ending 6th August

SUNDAY: Main headlines of the week clearly are that Reed beat Aston Rowant by 74 runs, (179 for 9 plays 105 all out),in the Semi-Final of the National Village Cup at Reed. The Final will be on Sunday 17th September at the headquarters of cricket, Lord's Cricket Ground. See you there! SATURDAY: The First team won by 5 wickets at Botany Bay when they chased the hosts' 161 all out. Mitchell Cooper took 5 for 29. Ed Wharton was put up the order and scored 61 whilst Rob Lankester was 45 not out as Reed romped home in 30 overs. Reed now top the table, 14 points clear of second-placed Hoddesdon. At the Pond, I mean the Green, the Seconds had their third successive fixture ruined by rain. After a delayed start, Reed managed to bowl only 4 overs before a further downpour made the ground unplayable. Broxbourne were 10 for 1; the wicket falling to Karl Ward. Reed's Third XI contained a strong line-up this week, but nevertheless Mill Hill Village just edged it by 7 runs. Rich Barlow batted well after Joe Graves and Steve Hughes had contributed to MHV being restricted to only 142 for 7 in their full 53 overs. Even so, Reed were bowled out for 135. This week was the end of the series of "Timed" matches. The final 4 fixtures in the programme will be back to the 50/50 limited overs format. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

Performance of the Round – Sean Tidey

In each round of the 2017 National Village Cup Gunn & Moore sponsor an award for the Performance of the Round. In the Quarter-Finals, the spotlight fell on Reed's victorious visit to Bledlow Village. Sean Tidey and his big brother Jack both made decisive contributions. Taking the new ball, Jack took 5 for 21 as Bledlow were bowled out for 85 chasing 227. However, the organisers, The Cricketer magazine, chose Sean for Performance of the Round. His special knock of 75 runs off 44 deliveries changed the pace of the Reed innings and let them post the competitive total of 227. He then bowled his 8 overs for 20 runs, taking the crucial wicket of Harry Bartlett who had scored 140 in the previous round. This is what Sean had to say about his performance and Reed’s chances in the Semi-Finals. "At this stage of the tournament you have to be backing yourself. We have beaten a few good teams on the way to the semi-final. The chance to play at Lord's again is an additional incentive too. Greavesie (our skipper) pushed me up from number 8 to 5 and gave me instructions to play my shots. I’d like to think the pace of my innings, and partnership with James Heslam put us in control. Later, Jack bowled exceptionally and obviously picking up five wickets in 7 overs put us on top! Reed always takes the NVC seriously as we know that the chance to get to play at Lord’s is one that doesn’t come very often.
