Performance of the Round – Tom Greaves

In each round of the 2017 National Village Cup Gunn & Moore sponsor an award for the Performance of the Round. Organisers at The Cricketer magazine have announced that the Performance of the Semi-Final Round goes to Reed CC Captain Tom Greaves who came in to bat at 88-5 and helped steady the ship and get some much-needed lower order runs towards the end of Reed’s innings. Greaves scored 48 off just 36 balls in a performance that saw him hit 5 sixes and a four. Aston Rowant appeared constantly behind the run rate when they batted. Bringing himself on as first-change bowler, Tom played an important role in dismissing Aston Rowant’s lower-middle order, taking wickets six, seven, and eight, including two lbws. During his eight overs Tom conceded 33 runs for his 3 wickets, at an economy rate of 4.13 per over. As winner of the Performance of the Round Tom receives a specially engraved Gunn & Moore cricket bat customised to show his performance. Additionally, all the round winners will be invited to the Gunn & Moore factory in Nottingham, when they will see for themselves the GM bat making process. Every round winner will be in with a chance of being picked for the 2017 Performance of the Season. The winner will receive a Gunn & Moore kitbag, including bat, pads, gloves and helmet. Tom will be in direct competition for this accolade with, amongst others, Sean Tidey who won Performance of the Quarter-Final Round.

Catt shines brightly, but Reed lose in tight game

15 year-old Mike Catt, in only his second game for the first team, battled for all but 3 overs of Reed’s innings to an unbeaten 66, enabling them to total 215. He found support from James Heslam (25) and Chris Jackson (32) in two half century partnerships, but a middle order collapse meant that they had to rely on a belligerent 23 from last man, Jack Tidey, to gain their fourth batting bonus point. At first, Flitwick struggled against some tight opening overs from Ed Wharton and Jack Tidey, aided by Tom Greaves, who removed their Sri Lankan star, Nawela, with his first ball. However, the Thurstance brothers put on 82 at a steady rate until Harry was trapped by Sean Tidey for 32. The prolific George threatened to post yet another century, but the returning Wharton (10-1-37-4) had him caught for 74 by a diving Mitchell Cooper and with Jack Tidey steaming in at the other end with figures of 10-1-27-2, Flitwick also stuttered to 177-7. After ricking his knee, Sean Tidey had to limp through his remaining overs, so Flitwick managed to scramble over the line to win by 2 wickets, having less than 2 overs remaining. As a result, with one match left, it is likely that Reed will finish fourth in the Championship this season, just behind Flitwick. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Headlines: Week ending 27th August

SATURDAY: The Firsts didn't quite have enough runs when Flitwick crept past their target of 216 with only 2 wickets in hand and less than 2 overs left. But a win is a win! Starring with the bat for Reed was young Mike Catt who scored 66 not out, and with the ball, Ed Wharton who claimed 4 for 37. At Chorleywood, where the Seconds were shot out for 93 in response to the host's 174 all out, Peter Tidey hoisted his star to figures of 4 for 23. One more league match to go PT! The "star" in the Third XI fixture was arguably Hemel Hempstead's stand-in skipper who reluctantly had to make the 'phone call on Saturday morning to concede the match when 3 players dropped-out overnight, thus giving Reed 30 well-needed points. Hemel are not only docked 10 penalty points, but under League Rules also have to pay £150 to Reed for conceding after the deadline! There is only one week remaining in the League programme. The Firsts are in 4th position, the Seconds are also 4th and the Thirds 7th in their respective Divisions. SUNDAY: No fixtures arranged. Watch the Test match instead perhaps. West Herts dash Reed’s promotion hopes

West Herts cantered past an under strength Reed XI with ex-Middlesex paceman, Will Jones, and Australian, Justin Powick, stamping their authority on the game. Jones (10-5-11-4) demolished Reed’s top order leaving them 27-5. Sean Tidey’s 49 and Stuart Smith (36) spared their blushes and with Alex Kelly weighing in with 25, helped them to a total of 156 from 48 overs. Having already taken four catches, Powick then dominated the Reed attack with a masterful 91 not out. With Alex Kelly snaffling two wickets and Mike Catt making a run out and taking a catch on the boundary, Reed reduced the home side to 80-4. However, with Mane (27 not out) to support Powick West Herts romped home by 6 wickets. As a result, Reed slipped to fourth place in the league with little chance of fulfilling their Premiership ambitions. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Headlines: Week ending 20th August

SATURDAY: Alex Kelly continued personal good form as he took 2 wickets when he stepped-up to the depleted First XI. But West Herts cruised past Reed's 156 with only 4 wickets down. Sean Tidey (49) and Stuart Smith (35) were the main run-getters but Reed slid down to fourth place with just 2 matches remaining. The Seconds are also in fourth place. Hertford rattled up 297 for 7 on the Green but Reed were well-short having been bowled out for 175. George Teeboon top-scored with 37 and both Mike Robertson and Rich Barlow got past 30. Earlier, Julien Fynn took 4 wickets and Joe Graves, 3. The Thirds slipped up at Harpenden Dolphins and were all out for 162. MJE Baker led from the front with 82 then later Jack Childs took 2 of the 3 Dolphins' wickets to fall as they romped home with 7 wickets intact. SUNDAY: Karl Ward hit 13 fours in his 74 against Camden on the Green and Stuart Smith bashed 6 fours and 2 sixes whilst scoring 41. Lloyd Bowman weighed-in with 33 not out. 204 was 25 too much for Camden as they ended on 179 for 9, 4 wickets falling to Ollie Sayers. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

For full details of the courses, venues, dates, times, length of course and cost, please visit the News Page of www.hertscricket.org We are committed to delivering a top-class experience for all candidates with the ultimate aim of inspiring the coaches that we train to pass on a love of the game to the youngsters that will last a lifetime. As in previous years, the ECB Coach Education courses allow coaches to train specifically for the age of player that they will be working with. There are courses in ‘Coaching Young People and Adults’, aimed at coaches who will be working mainly with players aged 13 and above, and in ‘Coaching Children’, aimed at coaches who will be working with players aged below 13. Initial support worker courses and CPD Modules are also available. As the names suggest, the content of these courses are specific to the players with whom the coaches will be mostly working, although coaches can, of course, train in both specialisms. In order to make sure that you select the correct course for yourself, when booking on - please make sure you read the course descriptions, commitment and Pre-requisites that are required. Hertfordshire Charley Cricket Winter Training Programme 2017/18

INFORMATION FROM HERTFORDSHIRE CRICKET LIMITED. We are pleased to announce that following the success of the Hertfordshire Charley Cricket Programme in 2016-17, in which over 250 children took part, we will be running the programme again this winter at the following venues throughout the County. Monday - Rickmansworth School, Rickmansworth Wednesday - Stanborough School, Welwyn Garden City Thursday - Samuel Ryder Academy, St Albans Please note we are no longer running Charley Cricket at The Nobel School this winter The training will run from September 2017 through to March 2018 and the cost for the whole winter programme remains at £200.00. The training is open to both boys and girls and there is no nomination process or trial required for players to sign up. Steve Hughes gave his best performance to date with a superb and destructive 5 for 23 against Hatfield Hyde. It was just the remedy for a side that in recent weeks had found themselves in a slump. M.J.E. Baker had won the toss and made the right call to bowl first on a track that was misbehaving after the mid-week rain. Playing at The Freman Oval, Joe Graves and Matt Yates had got things started for Reed. Both had catches taken by Ben Moody to put early pressure on the visitors. Owen Hughes also performed well with the ball but went unrewarded. Sensing that pace off the ball might be the right way to go at that time, Baker had a go at bowling a bit of off spin in tandem with Steve Hughes. The pair took 8 for 53 with the opposition losing their last 5 for 2 runs and Hughes taking his last 4 wickets for 0. Baker bowled 3 for 30, including Watson (53) whilst Hughes bowled 3 and had 2 fantastic catches taken by Graves and Michael Robertson. Hatfield finished on the usually below par score of 122. Robertson (18) and Paul Garrott (17) made a steady start in response. Hatfield’s talented bowling unit made things hard for the hosts with some tight lines. Both openers made starts but could not carry on. Reed then lost 3 more wickets leaving them 59 for 5. But Baker and Moody were not about to rollover. Sensible batting from both men frustrated the opposition much to their vocal displeasure. The track began to dry out and started to act more like a typical Freman track. Hoddesdon squeeze past Reed in top of the table clash!

In a tight match at the top of the table, Hoddesdon won by 4 wickets with just 4 overs left. On a slow wicket, affected by the previous week’s deluge, only seven batsmen reached double figures. Therefore Ed Wharton’s quickfire 35 was remarkable. However Reed collapsed to 64-5 and went 26 overs without a boundary. Richard Wharton’s dogged 19 from 81 balls kept them in the match and Sean Tidey hit 33 to help the home side to 143 against some fine bowling, two of them conceding only 11 runs from their ten overs. In truth, Hoddesdon found the going just as tough. Ed Wharton (2-31) took two quick wickets, but a gritty stand of 62 between South African Jadyn Broodryk (29) and Sam Davis seemed to have won the game. Skipper, Tom Greaves (2-31), Sean Tidey (2-30) had other ideas and reduced Hoddesdon to 100-6. Nevertheless, Todd Sturdy (24 not out) and Davis ( 56 not out) ground out a partnership of 47 to secure the victory, although the latter survived a chance on the boundary to deny Reed their top position in the league. Headlines; Week ending 13th August

SATURDAY: For those of a certain age, the cricket vernacular referred to as a "Michelle", (Shane Warne often says it), means Pfeiffer, (as in the actress, Michelle Pfeiffer). For those of a younger generation, Pfeiffer rhymes with five-for. And there were two Reed players who had "Michelles" today. Alex Kelley took 5 wickets over at West Herts when the 2nds overhauled their target of 210 with 2 wickets intact. Matt Sampson scored 77 and Marcus Martin 42. By the end of the day, the Seconds were in 4th position in Division 4B. Meanwhile at the Freman Oval, the arguably most talented of the Hughes family, father Steve, took an amazing 5 for 23 as Hatfield Hyde were toppled for 122. The Thirds took their time but MJE Baker saw them home with an undefeated fifty when they won by 5 wickets. The 3rds regain 6th position in Division 9A. At a very green Green, thanks to the mid-week rain, the Firsts had a bit of an "After the Lord Mayor's Show" type of game. Batting first, Reed managed to reach a lowly 143 all out after being 50 for 1 at one stage. Ed Wharton made 35 and Sean Tidey 33. But this wasn't enough; Hoddesdon faced a massive amount of "dot balls", but still won comfortably, with overs in hand, by 4 wickets. Consequently, Reed have slipped from first place in the Championship to third as both Hoddesdon and West Herts leapfrogged them. SUNDAY: Club President, Andrew Emms,together with his wife Carol, hosted a lunch in aid of Parkinson's UK with donations directed towards research.
