Fairbrother and Hughes in 200 opening stand

The persistent rain outlasted the cricket although both sides tried their best to get a full game in. Reed was once again hosting Knebworth Blues at The Green due to the home side’s original opposition dropping out. Reed batted first with Australian Sam Fairbrother quickly racing to double figures. The Blues prepared themselves for a long afternoon in the field accompanied by constant heavy drizzle. Somewhat fortunately the sound of Dixie jazz band playing at a local event kept everyone’s spirits high. The left handed first teamer looked a class above as he reached his half century quickly with ease. His fellow opener was Rhodri Hughes who started playing the supporting role but then began to expand his stroke making having played himself in. Their partnership went passed 100 runs in the 16th over to be followed by the 150 in the 21st and amazingly 200 in the 25th over. By this point Fairbrother had successfully reached the personal mile stone of three figures, his first for Reed. He celebrated with a reverse sweep for a huge six. He then retired for 120. Hughes soon followed him unfortunately having been caught at midwicket for a superb 60. New member Craig Brown then joined in the fun by smashing a quick 32 in a 49 run partnership with Graeme Stuart (10). A few other contributions down the order took Reed to a final total of 265 for 5. After the break the drizzle had stopped and Reed went about the business of looking for 10 wickets. Matt Yates bowling left arm over soon claimed the first but this however allowed M. Reed beat the weather and Hoddesdon with dramatic batting display

The weather put paid to much of the Cricket scheduled for Saturday but a window in a bleak general weather allowed the Saracens Herts Championship League match between Hoddesdon and Reed to survive and produce an amazing batting display from the visitors Reed who secured a valuable win. Reed won the toss and in view of the weather invited Hoddesdon to bat first. An early run out saw the home team slip to 12-1 but then several rain interruptions followed and the match was scaled down in overs. From a low point of 90 – 3 Hoddesdon put together a good late surge to register a very respectable 229-3 from their 41 overs thanks to a fine 81* from Davis well supported by a fluent 78* from Curtis. Reed were faced with needing 230 to win from just 37 overs, a target in excess of 6 runs an over. However, skipper Heslam instructed a victory charge from the word go and switched his batting order around accordingly. Sean Tidey promoted to open with Will Heslam set off at a furious rate striking 4 boundaries in the first over. Will Heslam reached a good 26 off 27 balls before being bowled with the score on70 but the arrival at the crease of Tom Greaves saw things get even worse for the home side. Greaves struck the ball majestically and powerfully all around, and often well out of, the ground. He rapidly moved to 50 catching up with Tidey who was by no means slow scoring. President’s Day Has Been Cancelled Due to Davidstow National Village Cup Replay

Well, here we are again! Is it a year since the last one? This year, President’s Day 2014 will take place on Sunday, 27th July at Reed Village Green, commencing at 11am. The format will be similar to 2013, 50 overs per side; the teams will be captained by Tim Tidey and (my son), Andy Emms. Tim keeps wicket for the 2XI and is Jack and Sean’s Dad. Ex Reed player, Andy, now lives in Suffolk with his family, and plays for Garboldisham CC, where Reed will play the final game of their Norfolk Tour on the 26th August. Only an hour’s drive away - all welcome! The match is scheduled to last all day. The Village Green will look its best, and we hope for similar weather to last year! A barbecue will run from mid-afternoon, and the Club bar will be open for refreshments, as usual. There is a playground on the opposite side of the Green. There may even be a paddling pool to keep the children happy, if not clean! So, please do come along and support the Club. Make a day of it and pray for good weather, yet again! 3rd XI lose by 3 wickets

After losing the toss and being put into bat, reed got off to a shaky start. In the space of 4 overs, reed lost the wickets of their first 3 batsmen, and skipper, leaving them on 22/4 off 4 overs. At this point, Alan ward and Kieron Willoughby were at the crease. Willoughby, having a history of 3 ducks leading into the game, seemed keen not to make it a 4th, playing cautiously to get off the mark. However having getting past the milestone, willoughby played an impressive innings with multiple boundaries, getting himself a score of 53. Alan ward provided great support, contributing 35 runs to their partnership of 82 which restored Reed's innings. Contributions from the lower order- Bowman 20 and B. Morse 20, enabled reed to post a reasonably competitive score of 170. Reed opened with Giblin and Roberts. Giblin was getting the ball to swing, and caused the batsmen to play and miss on multiple occasions but with no reward. It was Roberts who did the early damage, picking up the wickets of the opening batsmen and the number 3, ending with figures of 2-44 off 10 overs. Mores was only able to bowl one ball, after which he had to leave the field with a shoulder injury. This meant Alan ward came on ,getting the ball to swing in he air, and picking up 3 wickets with figures of 3-48. Robertson picked up the 7th wicket, after an impressive spell of pace bowling left him with figures of 1-32. However despite some good bowling efforts, Dunstable were able to pick up the required runs, in 34 overs. Thanks mainly to an innings of 83 not out from their opening batsman.

The Deville to pay as Sam punished Preston

A sublime innings by Sam Deville led the way for a fantastic win for Reed as they hosted Preston at Freman College. Whilst the Sunday first eleven successfully progressed through another round in the Village Cup at Reed, the second eleven made use of the clubs fast paced second pitch. Reed lost the toss and was asked to bowl, a decision the opposition captain may have regretted as he watched his opening partner and number 3 fall for small totals to Jack Childs. Childs continued his good form and went for very few runs in his opening spell as did Joe Graves, however due to the heat an early bowling change at both ends seemed the smart thing to do. Owen Hughes was bought on to restrict the runs and bowled very well as did Graeme Stuart (7-0-28-0). Whilst runs were hard to come by wickets were equally hard to find. Toby Emes however, changed that by picking up the wicket of Maxwell (33) thanks to a fine catch behind by Lloyd Bowman who had also earlier taken a sharp catch off Childs. A run out by Emes accounted for the fourth and final wicket for Reed although by 30 overs the visitors had only managed 130. Unfortunately for Reed a very poor final ten overs saw Murrell take advantage of some tired bowling from returning bowlers. The heat had taken its toll on the young Reed side as Preston finished on 244 for 4, with Murrell undefeated on 103. 2014 Season Accelerates into Overdrive!

Almost approaching the halfway point in the season and things are going well at Reed. After a good start, a couple of unfortunate weather interruptions, and a slight blip in form, our 1st Xl are right back on track with 3 x consecutive wins in the SHCL Championship League. This sees them in 2nd place in the League only behind the highflying, flush Hertford, who have “recruited well” over the winter in Australia. To see our team of predominantly ex Reed Colts beating sides such as Knebworth Park 1st Xl and John Emburey led Totteridge-Millhillians is a sight to behold. Our 2nd Xl also continues to win consistently without having really hit absolute all-round top form as yet. One rain-off and just one defeat to date (when we managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory!) and this week see us once again topping our League Table – back to back promotions look on the cards despite the inspiring skipper getting the odd call-up to the 1st Xl. It’s a different story down in the 3rd Xl where life has become unaccustomedly difficult for skipper Maseeh who has been used to back-to-back promotions and driving all before him. Losing several 2nd/3rd Xl regulars from last seasons Club Membership, and intermittent availability up and down the teams has had a bad effect on our Division 8 team. However, as the College gates close, the sun shines, and perhaps even the Footballers (flushed with World Cup success!!!) might decide to take 2/3 weeks off before the new season starts again in mid-July, I am sure that one way or another the best is yet to come. 3 Steps from Cricketing Heaven!

2012 National Village Cricket Cup Champions Reed moved to within 3 more wins of a repeat Cup Final appearance at the home of Cricket with a tumultuous 5 wicket victory over Kent Area Champions Sibton Park at Reed on Sunday. Reed were led to victory by a tremendous unbeaten century from Club Captain James Heslam who scored 108* from just 105 balls as Reed chased down the 174 required for victory for the loss of just 5 wickets with 5 overs to spare. On a gloriously sunny day at Reed, in front of a good crowd, the visitors Sibton Park won the toss and elected to bat. On the well renowned batting friendly Reed wicket this soon looked a good toss to win as the visitors comfortably accumulated 60 without loss in the first 15 overs with openers Bishop 33 and Allon being punishing with any loose deliveries received. The Reed fielding was up to its usual high standards but chances were not being offered and a wicket for Reed looked far away. At this stage the only bowler restricting the visitors was spinner Tom Greaves who was in the early stages of bowling a magnificent spell of 9 overs 2-9. However, it was Mitchell Cooper who made the breakthrough for Reed dismissing threatening opener Bishop for 33 and the 3 balls later dismissing No 3 Dunham for a duck. This shock loss of wickets, accompanied by superb Reed fielding drove Sibton Park back into their shell. The next 10 overs produced only 25 runs and the Reed pressure told as T om Greaves took reward for his miserly spell taking the wickets of Hickmott for 4 and opener Allon for 46 . 90-4 became [...]

Reed Close in on Championship League Leaders

Former Test Star John Emburey appears at Blacksmiths Lane but Totteridge fall to rampant Reed. Reed entertained Totteridge Millhillians 1st Xl at Reed on Saturday in the Championship Division of the Saracens Herts Cricket League. Totteridge were captained by former England Test Star John Emburey but it was Reed led by skipper James Heslam that came out on top as Reed moved into 2nd place the Herts League Championship Table. After being put in to bat by their visitors Reed got off to a solid start with openers Sam Fairbrother 23 and Will Heslam 13 putting on 38 before Heslam fell caught. Alex Mutucumarana contributed a stylish 44 and Reeds skipper James Heslam was in great form despite an on-going wrist injury. After Mutucumarana went caught for his 44 and Reeds dangerous all-rounder Tom Greaves joined Heslam and the pair set about what proved to be a match winning partnership of 94. Heslam departed stumped for a superb 79 containing 10x4’s and 2x6’s and on the same total Greaves also fell caught by the keeper for 55. Reed eventually totalled 279 for 9 from their 60 Overs. In reply visitors Totteridge lost opener Bhimjiyani for0 but then set about a solid looking reply. Bermingham 18, Selwood 21 and Justin 50 saw the visitors to 120 – 4 before the Reed pressure told and the innings subsided to 137 – 5. The Totteridge innings then focussed on avoiding defeat rather than any pretence of a victory charge. Tom Greaves recorded 16 Overs 4-69 to add to his earlier innings of 55 but taking the last 3 wickets proved to be a challenge for Reed. Heslam and Tidey star as Reed turn the tables to triumph!

Reed 1st Xl travelled to Knebworth Park on Saturday in the Saracens Hertfordshire Championship League and recorded a remarkable and ultimately comfortable victory after seeming at one stage to be dead and buried at the hands of their hosts. Put in to bat on a damp wicket Reed actually got off to a reasonable start with Will Heslam and Sam Fairbrother registering 37 before Fairbrother fell caught for 20. That however signaled the start of a Reed slump to 62-5 as batsmen came and went with alarming regularity. The in form Will Heslam however stood firm and resolute compiling a patient score of 38 but he fell caught and the Reed Innings stood at 86 -7. Sean Tidey decided on an aggressive approach and rattled up a quick 23 but when he holed out at 113-8 an early defeat loomed! However, Reed skipper James Heslam who normally opens the Reed innings but who is carrying a wrist injury walked out at No 10 determined to rescue the situation. Together with Jack Tidey 17 they took the score to 134 before Tidey fell for 17. With last pair Heslam and Toby Fynn now at the crease one more error would be Reeds last, but Heslam carefully crafted a superb innings and manipulated the strike to the frustration of the Knebworth Park Team. Fynn contributed greatly with his sensible and mature supportive 14* but Heslam took charge and as the Reed Innings drew towards its final overs he accelerated the scoring with a series of hard struck boundaries. Heslam pummeled 7 Fours and a Six in an undefeated 51 which eventually saw the Reed Innings drawn to a close at a respectable 191-9 from their allocated overs. [...]
