Reed Reap Revenge

Reed confirmed their place in the Hertfordshire Area Final of the Davidstow National Village Cup with an impressive win over rivals Wheathampstead on Sunday afternoon. After the defeat against them last year, Reed were determined not to fall to the same fate and stormed to a six wicket victory. Captain James Heslam won the toss and chose to field on a slightly green deck after the large quantity of rain which saw the previous day’s game cancelled. This soon proved to be a great decision as the economical Jack Tidey (9-2-22-2) and once again impressive Tobey Fynn (9-1-36-4) made early inroads into the Wheathampstead top order. Fynn took the first of the Reed wickets trapping Griffiths plumb LBW for just 2 and Hashmi caught behind by S Tidey for 8. Tidey then got his first wicket soon after by cleaning up McEwan for 1, leaving the visitors struggling at 11-3 Things didn’t improve for Wheathampstead as they lost more quick wickets with Fynn bowling both Griffiths and Potter for 11 and 4 retrospectively, leaving them 25-5. Tidey then bowled Kiek for just 8 leaving the visitors massively struggling on 31-6. Wheathamsptead then offered some resistance through Walayat who played aggressively on his way to 42. He was supported by Booth (8) who managed to frustrate and keep the reed attack at bay. With Booth regularly playing and missing to Ward (4-1-9-0). Booth eventually was cleaned bowled by the ever impressive Greaves (9-1-22-2). Walayat continued to be aggressive and was supported by Dabare (12). Promising signs despite defeat

Whilst Reed hosted two teams in a 20/20 double bill, they also sent over a second eleven to face Aston in a friendly fixture. Aston batted first and started slowly as Jack Childs and Joe Graves sent down good opening spells. Pippa Wisdom making her debut for the clubs adult sides came on first change replacing Graves coming down the hill. She immediately started with a good line and picked up the first wicket thanks to a nimble catch by Reed captain Marcus J.E. Baker behind the stumps. Mike Robertson, replacing Childs, also got into a nice rhythm and didn’t make it easy for the hosts with some fierce bounce and movement. Robertson would take 3 wickets for 23 before making way for the returning Childs and Graves. Wisdom took a second before Zak Conley came on and eventually struck twice. Tom Walsingham wrapped up the tail quickly with two wickets in his single over as Reed bowled out Aston for 162. After tea, Peter G. Baker and Tom Walsingham made a rapid start scoring freely. However, a sudden upset came when Baker (19) lost his balance mid way through a shot and was stumped as he stumbled. Mike Robetson (20),Walsingham (31) and M.J.E. Baker (32) tried regaining the initiative with some fantastic shots but each batsman fell prematurely and Reed finished all out for 116.

Champions overpower 1st XI

Reed entertained last year’s First Division champions Hertford in their match at The Green on Saturday. Reed bowling first were a little wayward in their first four overs conceding 26 runs. Then Jack Tidey found his radar bowling the Hertford skipper Gale for 22 leaving them on 27 for 1, Bailey joined the other opener Ray and they kept the scoreboard ticking over until Ray fell to Toby Fynn (10-3-38-3) at 59. Hertford’s batsmen including an Australian state overseas player were all getting good starts but not building on them. Cook though was the exception his 65 was the standout for Hertford and although extras was the next top scorer with 34, Hertford made 213 off of 47.3 overs. Fynn and Kallum Ward (3-0-9-2) the pick of Reed’s bowlers. James and Will Heslam gave Reed a solid start in reply. Will fell to an lbw decision leaving Reed on 32 for 1, skipper James fell soon after and when Sam Fairbrother fell to a caught and bowled Reed were wobbling at 40 for 3. Tom Greaves and Kallum Ward looked to steady matters but once Greaves fell to Cook, now getting in on the bowling act and Marcus Martin not troubling the scorer, left the Home Team 61 for 5 in the 19th over. Sean Tidey and Kallum Ward knew they needed to stay together to bring Reed back into the match and they did, but when Ward fell for a gutsy 22 and Tidey for 38 Reed were now 121 for 7 with only Mitchell Cooper holding out for 27, Reed were all out 150 in the 38th over.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

Reed 2s suffered their first setback of the season on Saturday after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory away to Shenley Village 2s. On a blissful day and in the glorious surrounds of the Shenley Cricket Centre, Reed’s stand-in skipper Phil Frenay elected to put the hosts into bat on what looked a belting deck. Reed’s opened the bowling with Peter Tidey and ‘Mr Wicket’ Karl Ward, both coming of the back of 5 wicket hauls. Tight bowling and good fielding meant the Shenley score crept along slowly as Reed picked up regular wickets. Tidey (24-11-53-3) and Ward (17-3-61-2) bowled marathon spells, and were well supported towards the end of the Shenley innings by Tumala (6-0-29-1) and the returning Tom Walsingham (7-1-33-0). Captain Paul (69 not out) however fought hard for Shenley and as they ended their 53 overs on what appeared a slightly below par score of 187-6. Frenay and Tumala opened the batting for Reed and got off to a flyer in pursuit of the target. 15 runs came off of the first over, and Tumala in particular was taking a liking to the home sides pace attack. He raced to 30 before being caught at square leg, as Frenay began to show glimpses of his imperious form from last season. Marcus J.E. Baker joined Frenay in the middle and also got into the swing of things with some very powerful hitting as Reed reached 125-1 at drinks. Frenay got to his half century and looked increasingly assured but the introduction of spin from both ends soon flipped the game on its head. Caine and Fynn shine despite defeat

Reed’s second 20/20 match of the day on Sunday was against Premier League outfit Bishop’s Stortford. Outfit being the operative word with Bishop’s Stortford in their colourful 20/20 strip. Electing to bat Reed lost James Heslam with the score on just 8 and were finding it tough going against the bowling of Williams and Chatfield. Tom Greaves managed to get things going with a solid 18, but good all round bowling from Stortford left Reed on a below par 84 for 8 after their 20 overs. Jack Tidey though hadn’t read the script two superb opening overs left Stortford on 3 for 3 and a shock was more than a possibility. Hughes and Chatfield steadied matters though, but Reed’s bowlers and fielders were going to make as hard as they could and they did. Tidey 4-1-16-3, Toby Fynn 3-0-14-2 completing a good afternoon across two matches and 16 year old Jack Caine 3-0-6-0 standing out. Stortford needed 18 overs to reach their target. A 5 wicket victory in an attritional but nonetheless absorbing match.

So close, yet so far

Reed opened their Sunday 20/20 double header against fellow Championship side Hoddesdon. Put in by their opponents on a warm sunny early afternoon, Reed took an early wicket when Byrne fell to Karl Ward for just 1. Hoddesdon progressed despite some tight Reed bowling particularly from Sam Fairbrother 4-0-13-1 who captured the other opener Byrne to leave Hoddesdon 42-2 after 8 overs. The introduction of Toby Fynn from the Pavilion End proved to be the right decision from Skipper Jack Tidey, as he took three wickets in his spell (4-0-27-3) to leave Hoddesdon struggling at 68-5 in the thirteenth over. Needing quick runs the pair of Jones and Balkham steadied the ship but Reed never let them get away with some clever bowling, Tidey 4-0-26-0 and Tom Greaves 4-0-26-1 in particular, left Hoddesdon on 126 for 7 after their twenty over allocation. In reply Reed lost James Heslam in the second over for 1, however, Sean Tidey and Kallum Ward combined well with some good ball placement and lofty hitting. The pair were dismissed within three balls of each other to leave Reed wobbling slightly at 39 for 3 after the 7thover. Mitchell Cooper with 22 and Tom Greaves with 24 set about putting Reed in a winning position despite the two going in the 16th over Reed were 95 for 5. Enter Jack Tidey and he together with Fairbrother took Reed to needing just 9 runs off the last two overs. However there was a twist in the tale with the return of opening bowler Jones keeping Reed to just two runs in the penultimate over. Corporate? Evangelical? Or Family?

The 2014 Season is now well underway and we are settling down into what constitutes our new 2014 groove. The start of the season has been a bit mixed and the odd rocky road is presenting itself. In the next few weeks a few serious decisions have to be made, and 18 months on from the absolute peak of winning the National Village Cup at Lords, and our 1st Xl gaining promotion to SHCL Division 1 in the same weekend, where are we really heading as a Club? Some might ask “What type of Club” are we? Where do we want to be, and are the members prepared to back their hopes and wishes with the required inputs, or just pay for them? In my mind there (at least) 3 types of Cricket Club. The Corporate where a “Turn Up, Play and Pay” (or not as the case may be!) syndrome exists. Here generous Commercial and Private Sponsors, or 24/7 big club commercial entity money, underwrite the presence of key players (sometimes regardless of “League Rules”!). This finance spearheads the 1st Xl’s position and the Clubs operations as a whole. In these clubs Top Team players tend to turnover more quickly. The Overseas Players are rarely there for more than one season and the “Premier League Badge Kissing” of one year is rarely repeated by the same persons more than once or twice in succession! Non-playing membership is often a specific type of association – seemingly a pride more akin to what your money can buy you, and/or success by association, rather than true local long held connection. A bit like the “Prawn Sandwich Brigade” at Man U. Die-hard Manchester supporters (until success trips up) [...]

2014 Club Tour Update

Hello all, The 2014 club tour is here. This is your chance to sign up to what is regarded by many as the best weekend of the year. Myself and the other tour organisation squad have yet again worked hard to secure you a cheap tour, in a hotel with a bed and a roof that MAY not evict us after half hour. Yes… hello Travelodge Norwich Central Riverside! This year, all you need to secure your place on tour is £50 – YES JUST 50 ENGLISH POUNDS. This will cover your hotel and tour shirt. All that will be left to pay then is coach travel to and from the 3rd game (the other 2 days are close enough for taxi jobs) – the coach we will sort nearer the time. So, despite the world recession, despite the cost of living going up and despite the cost of beer and out of date peanuts also going up… the cost of tour has actually GONE DOWN. With it being Norwich and only 1.5 hours (max) by car or train, I hope to see a very healthy squad out for the trip. We have the added pleasure (and peace of mind) of playing against two clubs with ties to Reed CC. The first, Great Melton CC, have an ex-member amongst their ranks and the second club have our chairman’s son and again ex-Reed CC colt and 1st teamer playing for them. I would expect a large crowd to witness our usual day 3 hungover capitulation.
