Richard Johnson cemented his position as one of Reed’s outstanding talents on Sunday with a fine display with bat and ball. Reed captain Jason Archer won the toss and batted against the North London opposition Rosslyn. Johnson and Tom Fulk opened the innings and scored well despite some tight bowling from Mussan and Clement, reaching 71 before Fulk, chased a wide delivery for the second time during the weekend and was caught for 22. Marcus Martin another outstanding player from the Reed academy joined Johnson and pushed the score on to 152 before, Johnson, chipped the ball into the fielder’s hands for an authoritative 80. Johnson left the field disappointed as his innings had “ton” written all over it. Opposition skipper Patel, claiming Johnson as the best batsman his side had come across for many a season!! Martin reached a fluent 58 before, again falling to another catch in the deep, trying to push the score on in the closing overs. Three other wickets fell but colt George Greaves remained stubbornly unbeaten, despite the best efforts of Matt Bowles to run him out, trying to take a kamikaze single! Reed’s 40 overs ended with a healthy 193 runs in the bank, and the prospect of another NHL victory. After tea Rosslyn struggled with Rupert Martin and Danny Champion bowling quick tight spells. Champion inparticular picking up a couple of wickets in the best spell of bowling for the club to date. Ever reliable skipper Archer, again bowled accurately and with venom snaring the dangerous Patel and Reeve. Johnson then joined the fray with the ball, getting in the wicket column twice for just 4 runs, Hussain and Adey finding Johnson far too hot too handle. George Greaves marked a fine league debut, picking up the wicket of Verril for 0, as Rosslyn’s reply faded. Archer bowled the last over for Reed, and despite genuine pace and accuracy failed to take the final wicket, which would have earned Reed a bonus point. The Rosslyn innings closed on 170 9 giving Reed another victory and kept alive their hopes of a first season promotion into Divison 1. |
