On Sunday Reed were entertained by the undefeated Luton Nomads in the North Herts League Division 2. On a pitch that had a considerable amount of grass present it was no surprise that when the Nomads skipper won the toss Reed were asked to bat. Reed openers Tom Fulk and Stuart Smith started very cautiously and were finding opportunities to score rare. This was due mainly to some tight bowling from the Luton Nomads, in particular G. Read who missed the outside edge on a number of occasions. Smith then upped the tempo with a few lusty blows before falling to a catch at 1st slip off the bowling of Jethwa (1-48). The run rate then started to increase, due mainly to Marcus Martin who scored a well made 28 before being adjudged lbw. A further 2 wickets followed quickly leaving Reed at 153 for 4 after 33 overs. Graham Hazzard then joined Tom Fulk who up until this point had played the anchor role trying to bat out the 40 overs. Both Hazzard and Fulk upped the tempo rapidly scoring runs to all parts with a full array of shots. Reed racked up 72 runs in the last 7 overs of the innings leaving them on an substantial 225 for 4 with Hazzard making a powerful 30 not out and Fulk batting the entire innings making a sublime 97 not out. Luton Nomads reply got of to a good start with a combination of good shots from openers Yashpal (18) and Graham (32) and wayward bowling containing 5 consecutive wides from Richard Johnson, but when Johnson found his line and length he went on to bowl a ferocious spell which included the removal of Yashpal and Shane for a second ball duck. After Johnson finished his spell he was replaced by Marcus Martin who carried on the good work bowling a lively spell picking up 5 19 off 6 overs including the dangerous Graham. Some tail end hitting from Luton Nomad gave the score some credibility but the 3 remaining wickets were taken with Archer, Collins and 14 year old Fergus Martin all taking one wicket with Tom Fulk capping of a fine performance by taking his fourth catch of the innings of Martin to leave Luton Nomads all out for 147 and therefore giving Reed all 5 points and hoping this result will be the start of a successful promotion bid. |
