Broodryk century defeats Reed 1sts

A century partnership between South African Jayden Broodryk (105 not out) and Todd Sturdy (54) turned the game Hoddesdon's way after they lost their first 3 wickets for just 12 runs. On a dry wicket which encouraged movement and spin, they were the only batsmen to really play themselves in, although they survived a number of close calls and several half chances. After Ed Wharton (1-19) and Jack Tidey (2-34) made those early breakthroughs, Reed were frustrated and even spin twins Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey could only muster a wicket apiece as their opposition raced to their target at 5 runs an over. Having won the toss, Reed struggled on the surface to match their customary scoring rate, despite Ed Wharton's flamboyant 39. Hoddesdon's bowlers: Bill Thorne (2-44), James Curtis (4-63) from 20 overs apiece and Harry Mason with 2-24 made them have to work for their runs and wickets fell at regular intervals. At lunch. on 94-6, a low total was on the cards, but a gritty 37 by Richard Wharton and more fluent 24 by Jack Caine gave the innings respectability. However, the unbeaten last wicket partnership of 40 between Jack Tidey (39 not out) and Toby Fynn (11 not out) took the score to 188-9, making Reed more hopeful at the break. Garrott innings sees the 3rds to victory

On the hottest day of the year so far, Reed 3rd XI hosted second place Rickmansworth III at the Freman Oval. The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to avoid the forecast late afternoon heat. Rickmansworth openers Langley (42) and Raz Khan (68) started steadily despite accurate bowling from Owen Hughes (5-1-24-0) and Julien Fynn (9-3-34-1). The pair continued to build on their foundation during the first spell of left-armer Matt Yates (9-0-36-0), however the introduction of Robert Willoughby (9-0-34-4), bowling in tandem with Steve Hughes (9-0-56-0) saw the breakthrough when Langley succumbed to an arm ball from Willoughby. This became the start of Willoughby’s rampage as; next bowling Abbas (1) then snatching a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Adeel Khan (10). The big wicket came when Willoughby trapped Raz Khan lbw, finishing his well crafted innings. Shah (21) and Yousuf (22) looked to up the run rate as the innings headed into the later overs. Both batsmen played aggressively until Shah was caught by Steve Hughes off the bowling of Robertson (4-0-41-1). His replacement, Mohammed (29) continued in the same vein until Fynn bowled Yousuf, and Mohammed was run out by the Reed captain Rhodri Hughes. Butt (5) and Harvey (1) closed out the innings, with Rickmansworth finishing on 231 for 7 from their 45 overs. Reed’s response began smoothly with openers Paul Garrott (80) and Richard Johnson (57) patiently waiting to put away the bad ball. With Reed on 114 from 19 overs Johnson was caught and bowled by Adeel Khan (7-0-1-46). Thirds collapse against Hoddesdon

Reed III’s headed to the idyllic Roydon Cricket club to face Hoddesdon IV. On winning the toss, Reed opted to bowl, hoping to use the good weather to their advantage. Joe Graves (9-3-18-4) opened up down the hill, with Ian Roberts (3-1-11-0) starting off at the other end. The Hoddesdon openers Savanhu (13) and Brooks (17) began aggressively picking up some early runs. Having bowled just 3 overs, Roberts succumbed to a knee industry, with Neil Haslam (9-2-24-0) replacing him from the pavilion end. Graves became the first bowler to strike, cleaning up Savanhu. Graves continued his relentless attack, clean bowling Hunt (8), Brown (0) and Harrison (1). Hoddesdon lost another wicket when Brookes failed to make ground and was run out by Mike Robertson. Despite being 45-5, the home side refused to collapse, with Welsby (25) and Maughan (10) stabilising the innings. The introduction of Mike Juckes to the attack immediately reaped reward when Maughan was caught by Graves. The biggest stand of the innings then proceeded, as Welsby continued stoically, while Draisey (30) looked to further build the total. As the innings drew on Matt Yates (9-2-32-2) and Jukes began to pick up wickets, with Graves catching Welsby off the bowling of Yates, then Juckes picking up his second wicket with Draisey caught behind by Bill Mansfield. Yates snagged Cowner (16) with a caught and bowled, with Jukes taking the final wicket of Osbourne (1). Hoddesdon all out for 161, having made a sterling recovery. The Whartons dominate Dunstable

Reed continued their league form with a comfortable 7 wicket win, albeit against a Dunstable side severely weakened by a stag party. Having inserted their hosts, the Reed bowlers kept a tight hold on their top order, restricting them to 119-5 from 50 overs. This was especially due to the remarkable 20 over spell by Jack Tidey, who bowled unchanged and finished with six maidens after lunch. His final figures read 20-10-32-2. However they could not dismiss Brad Matthews, twice putting him down, and they were made to rue those misses as he opened his shoulders in the last 10 overs, scoring an undefeated 91 in Dunstable's 198 for 6, Ed Wharton and Zac McGuigan were the other wicket takers with run-outs from the latter and Jack Caine. Fearing another destructive spell from Luke Cherry, Reed's habitual nemesis, Ed Wharton decided attack was the order of the day and promptly smashed him out of the attack. Indeed he conceded an unprecedented 46 from his first 7 overs. With his brother, Richard (31) at the other end, the Whartons added 116 runs in 18 overs until both were bowled in successive overs, Ed frustratingly dismissed for 94 - the second time he had just missed a century this season. A more measured partnership of 71 between Jack Caine (38 not out) and James Heslam (19 not out) ensued, safely steering Reed to 200 for 3. 3s win in the final over

Reed IIIs hosted top of the table Bushey III’s at Freman College. Despite a week of wet weather, the pitch was in reasonable condition and Bushey, winning the toss, elected to bat. Openers Ganesh (46) and Akbar (18 ) started well seeing off opening bowlers Owen Hughes (9-1-45-0) and Keiran McKinna (6-0-16-0) while building a solid foundation for the innings. The introduction of Ian Roberts to the attack brought Reed some relief when Akbar was bowled for 18. Toby Emes (9-0-50-3) also began to build pressure, getting good seam movement and picking up the wicket of Feasel (7). Roberts then ended the well measured innings of Ganesh, trapping him LBW. The wickets continued as Emes once again struck, bowling Vidal (5) and Adam (0). Bushey looked in trouble, however Aanir Hussain (38) showed patience while Amir (53) repeatedly thrashed the ball to all parts of the ground. With the total rising quickly, Reed’s captain Rhodri Hughes turned to Rob Willoughby (7-0-40-1) whose flighty bowling drew Amir down the wicket, giving Lloyd Bowman and easy stumping. In the final overs of the innings, Mike Robertson (5-1-26-1) bowled Hussain, leaving Biplab (13 not out) and Hassan (2 not out) to finish the innings for the visitors. The respectable score of 207-7 from 45 overs looked to be a challenge for Reed. Paul Garrott (24) and Richard Johnson (4) started the innings for Reed, facing some hostile bowling from Hussain (9-0-39-3) and tight lines from Sohail (9-0-35-1). Hussain struck first, getting Johnson LBW with the score on only 19. Willoughby (31) and Garrott proceeded to stabilise the innings until Garrott was caught off the bowling of Feasel (9-0-42-2). Reed 1sts meet their match in Nissen

Reed were blown away by Australian-born paceman, Kris Nissen, who finished with figures of 17-8-33-6. However even these did not reflect his dominance as 4 of his victims were clean bowled by fast swinging yorkers. Only 3 Reed batsmen reached double figures with Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves top scoring with 20 apiece. As a result the hosts managed just 106 in 37 overs. All this was in contrast to the start of the match when Ed Wharton (1 for 8) and Jack Tidey (2 for 6) reduced Shenley Village to 5 for 3 on a rain affected wicket. Yet it was Nissen again who thwarted the bowlers scoring a stylish 44 in spite of the conditions. Tom Greaves kept chipping away though, taking 4 for 58 and their opponents struggled to 138 for 9 from their 60 overs, but it proved to be plenty in the end. The League has been made aware of spoof twitter accounts and messages sent between participants that bring the League into disrepute. Any participant following or commenting on these spoof accounts could be considered to be complicit in their content and therefore risk their own, or their clubs, further sanctions. It is easy for the committee to see who they are. Therefore, we ask anyone engaged in this activity to immediately remove any likes, comments and even follows for these accounts and their critical messages. Friendly banter is welcomed, but these sites go way too far and it simply isn’t acceptable. Twin Tons at the FC Oval!

Reed III versus Bentley Heath II at Freman College, Buntingford on Saturday 25th May 2019. On an absolutely prince of a pitch at the notoriously high-scoring Freman Oval, Reed Third XI were back to their blistering best when taking-on Bentley Heath who won the toss and had decided to bat first. The visitors’ century-maker, Luke Peace, enquired what a par score might be as he, and fellow batsmen, Shon Alishah, (50), and Chetan Bakrania, (52), were rattling along at 8 runs an over. The ambiguous answer from the ageing gully fielder was that 300 probably wouldn’t be enough. Despite their quick scoring, Bentley Heath did not have it all their own way and Mike Robertson, in a rare spell of bowling managed to pick-up 3 wickets whilst the more orthodox method employed by Julien Fynn of bowling straight, at pace, and with bounce, accounted for his superb return of 4 for 37. Helped by many wayward sundries, the guests closed on 310 for 9 after their allocation of 45 overs possibly thinking that they had scored enough. Although the strategy was not necessarily that of losing early wickets in the reply, by both Paul Garrott and PG Baker exiting soon after tea, it allowed more time at the crease for Mike Robertson and George Garrott. That plan worked! Robertson was robust in his driving and pulling as he reached 108 whilst the nimble Garrott, gliding runs behind the wicket and running fast throughout and escorted by Fynn and Maseeh Naeem in particular, brought up his own century and was 106 not out when the winning run came midway through the fortieth over. 3 wins out of 3 for the 2’s!

In the absence of usual skipper, Ed Garrott, the Second team vice-captain Karl Ward won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Richard Barlow and Richard Johnson, the latter falling early without troubling the scorers. Stuart Smith joined Barlow at the crease, and both looked in good touch, putting on 52 runs for the second wicket, before Barlow fell for 24. The in-form James Sandford joined Smith, who continued to build the innings. Both Smith and Sandford played some great shots, but unfortunately fell just short of their fifties. After a few more quick wickets including two run outs, Reed looked like they might fall short of a strong total, when they were reduced to 164 for 7. Luckily some late order hitting from Ward and Matthew Bowles, who added 47 together for the 8th wicket, took Reed up to a more than respectable total of 213 for 9, Ward finishing the innings on 40 not out. With the pressure of runs on the board, the Watford Town openers took the attack to the Reed openers, from the start of the innings. Openers Ward and Matt Giblin plugged away, with no prevail, until with the score at 41, Giblin found the outside edge of opener Nasar, and ‘One of the best catches ever seen at Reed’ was pouched by Mitchell Cooper at first slip. Rupert Martin replaced Ward bowling down the hill, and claimed the next two wickets, firstly Watford’s no. 3, LBW, and then grabbing a well-reacted caught and bowled to dismiss the other opening batsman.
