Reed Thirds still pushing for promotion!

At a sunny Freman Oval Rhodri Hughes, the Reed captain, won the toss and elected to field first on a good looking wicket. Saturday saw Reed field three very strong teams as layer availability was good this week! West Herts started brightly finding the odd boundary and running the quick single until Kieran Mckinna (7.5-0-24-4) took the first 2 wickets after which West Herts never really got going, losing batsmen at regular intervals. A few lusty blows from Mushtaq got them up to 114 before he was nicely caught on the boundary by George Garrott. When he came on to bowl, Garrott also took 3 wickets for 25 from his 9 overs. Alex Kelly took one and there were two good run-outs in an outstanding fielding display. Reed's reply started well with Richard Johnson and Paul Garrott making it to the tea interval at 44 without loss from 10 overs. After the interval Johnson carried on magestically, finding the rope with ease. The pair had put on 104 for the 1st wicket when Garrott (43) nicked behind. That started a slight panic in the dressing room as Reed proceeded to lose 3 quick wickets for 3 runs. But George Garrott came in to accompany the classy Johnson, who remained undefeated on 69 at the other end, to see Reed home to win convincingly by 7 wickets. Reed are in 5th position in the Division but technically are fourth owing to Southgate Compton, (who currently head the table), being ineligible to be promoted this season. Action Jackson and Magnificent Martin keep the Seconds top of the pile

Reed Seconds kept up their good form with a solid performance against Hitchin Seconds at The Green. Electing to bat first on a slow pitch, openers Barlow and Frenay (46) put on 57 for the first wicket. The introduction of Patadia sent both openers back to the pavilion with 88 on the board. Enter Chris Jackson who hadn’t been dismissed in his four previous knocks. Reed upped the ante after drinks with Jackson building partnerships with Marcus Martin (24) , Jack Caine (19) and skipper Ed Garrott (21). A late burst of runs pushed Reed over the 200 mark finishing on 222-6 from their 50 overs. Hitchin started their chase quickly with Chris Maylin (55) and Bayston (36) putting on 69 for the first wicket. Ed Garrott brought himself on and trapped Bayston lbw. Then the first of three run outs, this one by Marcus Martin, brought Reed back into contention at drinks. Again it was the drinks break that proved the innings turning point. Hitchin slumped from 107-2 to 160-8. Matt Bowles (2-34) and Marcus Martin with a match winning (4-27) pushed Reed towards victory backed by superb catching, Matt Giblin and Phil Frenay in particular, and the two further run-outs, (both by skipper Garrott), Hitchin were dismissed in the 49th over for 186, leaving Reed winners by 36 runs. Reed stay top of Division 4B with five matches remaining in the League Season. Reed 2nd XI 222-6 in 50 overs (30 pts.) beat Hitchin 2nd XI 186 all out in 48.1 overs (12 pts.) by 36 runs. Ton-up Rooty!

Rob Lankester drove the winning boundary and with it brought up his maiden Reed league century at a run a ball. It was a fine innings of 102 not out containing 13 of those boundaries with shots all around the wicket. He shared partnerships of 89 with Zac McGuigan (30) and 86 unbeaten with James Heslam (22 not out). This after the dangerous Ed Wharton was caught at mid-off from the third ball of the innings. After Tom Greaves had inserted Leverstock Green and Wharton had made the early breakthrough - Claxton caught at slip by McGuigan - Wijalath (22) and Mahandma launched into the Reed opening attack, the latter smiting 13 fours in his rapid 67, Jack Tidey at last trapped the former in front and McGuigan in his opening over forced his partner into skying a short ball into keeper Sean Tidey's gloves. From 132-4 at lunch, the innings subsided to 174 all out, Toby Fynn the destroyer taking 4-17 bowling an unplayable length and line. Greaves was also rewarded for his 18 over stint with late wickets, finishing on 3-69. Thus Reed were back to winning ways to cement their third place in the Championship Division following last week's conquerors, Hemel Hempstead, being beaten by second placed Shenley Village. Reed II go top as Jackson tons up again

Reed 2nds surged to the top of Division 4B after sweeping aside struggling Sawbridgeworth 2nds. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, which they may have regretted when the in-form Richard Johnson nicked off second ball of the game. However this only served to bring Chris Jackson to the crease to join Phil Frenay. Jackson, fresh off of the back of an unbeaten century last week, picked up where he left off as he steadily and classily accumulated runs throughout the innings. He was ably supported by Phil Frenay (26), skipper Ed Garrott (43) and Marcus Baker (36 not out). Jackson carried his bat from the first over of the game, finishing on a magnificent 125 not out. That’s now 287 runs for Jackson without being dismissed. Reed finishing on 261 for 5. Sawbo’s response never really got going as Matt Giblin (7-2-15-2) continued his good form with two early wickets, ably supported by the miserly Rupert Martin (10-1-27-1), which along with a stunning run out by Matt Bowles at backward point, left the visitors 31 for 4. An aggressive middle order partnership, aided and abetted by some suspect Reed catching, did allow some form of recovery, but Julien Fynn (9-0-41-4) plugged away up the hill and deservedly picked up four wickets as his own good form continued. Another run out, this time from George Teeboon and a sharp caught and bowled by skipper Garrott then wrapped up the Sawbo innings on 134 all out. Reed won by 127 runs. Match Report submitted by MLB.

Fine fielding at Freman

In the corresponding match earlier in the season, the Third XI had failed to score any batting points and took only one bowling point when Southgate Compton scuttled Reed easily and won by 9 wickets. This time at Freman Oval, Reed equalled that 1 point tally within 3 deliveries when Owen Hughes had Brandon caught by a tumbling George Garrott for a duck. The next wicket was harder to earn as Robbie Wallis (41) and Grayson added 59 before Wallis mistimed a cross-seamed slow bouncer from Kieran McKinna into the safe hands of captain, Rhodri Hughes. After a further 41 runs, Heaney (31) missed an in-ducker from George Garrott. Cameron Wallis scored fifty then was out immediately afterwards taken at mid-off by McKinna and becoming debutant, Scott Nash's first victim. Nash had been a Reed Colt from the early nineties' vintage, but had played his senior cricket elsewhere and then stopped playing altogether several years ago. Steve Hughes bowled economically returning 1 for 38 aided by another good catch by McKinna. They exchanged roles soon after when the eldest Hughes clung on to one that was driven almost past him, giving McKinna figures of 2 for 44. Meanwhile, the younger Hughes combined when Rhodri pouched a catch off brother Owen (2 for 48). Grayson had been batting sedately since the first over whilst all this had been going on at the opposite end but eventually fell to a third catch by McKinna off Nash's bowling for 45 when the score was 195. The visitors rattled up more runs as the innings ended with an Owen Hughes run out off the final delivery on 226 for 9. After the early setback of losing Paul Garrott for [...]

A hurdle too high at Hemel!

Reed's match at Hemel Hempstead had a delayed start of one hour due to rain. Reed won the toss and decided to field and soon had Hemel in trouble. Jack Tidey (2 for 21), Tom Greaves (3 for 60) and Sean Tidey (2 for 37) all bowled well to restrict their opponents to 196 for 8 from 51 over with only Jack Doodson, having been dropped on 0, going on to make 103. Reed's reply got off to a superb start wth Ed Wharton hitting the first over for 17 runs. Wharton went on to make 27 before being bowled and then only Rob Lankester (44) and Matt Sampson (42) batted well as Reed eventually fell just short losing in the final over by 8 runs. REED TWOS KEEP MARCHING ON TOGETHER

On Saturday Reed 2nds travelled down the A10 towards Enfield to take on Holtwhites Trinibis 2nds. With the teams at opposite ends of the table, nothing but a win was acceptable for the away side in their push for promotion. Reed skipper Ed Garrott won his first toss of the season and opted to bat first on what looked like a good pitch. With usual openers Frenay and Barlow missing, Garrott promoted himself and opened the batting alongside Richard ‘Tonza’ Johnson. The pair looked steady, taking regular quick singles and putting the bad ball away to the boundary, before Garrott inside edged Weston on to his stumps for 13. With the score on 24 in came Chris Jackson who alongside Johnson kept the scoreboard ticking over at a steady rate until Johnson fell for a well-made 41 and Reed were 89-2 from 21 overs. George Teeboon was promoted to number 4 for his first bat of the season. 240 looked to be par and Teeboon and Jackson started to take the attack to the Holtwhites’ bowlers, both presented opportunities but the home side’s fielding was poor and they couldn’t hold on to their catches. Jackson made them pay passing 50 and Teeboon hit some nice boundaries until trying one big shot too many, he was eventually caught for 45. Reed were 182-3 from 39 overs when Mitchell Cooper strode to the crease. Cooper and Jackson both knew they had to score quickly if they were to post a defendable total and they did just that. Cooper hitting the spinner for 2 fours and a six in his first over at the crease. Jackson was in on the attack too hitting boundaries all around the ground, [...]

Closer than you would think!

Week 10 of the League season was the start of the return matches. In week 1 on the Freman Oval, Frogmore had been dismissed for 41 and a relatively strong Reed Third team had won by 10 wickets. This time, Frogmore showed much more steel as they reached a more imposing 192 for 9 in their 45 overs. Tony Albon was the backbone of the innings with 84 not out. Steve Hughes and Matt Yates had taken 2 wickets each before Mike Robertson, showing more control, bagged 3 for 29 in 7 overs. There was even time for PG Baker to add a wicket to his tally in his first spell of bowling in a League match for 4 seasons. Without last week’s centurion, Richard Johnson, (promoted), and his fellow opener, Rob Willoughby, (unavailable), who between them had accrued almost 160 runs, the Reed innings began with Paul Garrott and Baker and they scored almost 13 runs (well, 12 actually)! Stepping-up once more was Mike Robertson at number 3 who in partnership with Rhodri Hughes, (23), put-on 109 for the third wicket. The momentum was with Reed and Jon Braine (5) supported Robertson by adding a further 36 together. But at 164 with still another 29 required both fell, Robertson immediately after reaching his second century of the season. There followed a period of 8 overs when only 9 runs were scored and one more wicket lost. Reed were definitely under pressure. Then inexplicably, Readings who at that stage had figures of 0 for 13 off 6 overs (including three maidens), bowled a wide then two high full-tosses (both hit to the boundary by Joe Graves) and conceded another four and Reed were almost home [...]

Johnson hits match-winning 124

Reed 3rds picked up another valuable 30 points following their away game against Ickleford 3rd XI. Winning the toss, Reed elected to bowl, opening up with Prash Ramaraj (9-0-48-1) and Steve Hughes (9-1-42-0). Ickleford openers Howard (13) and Dermont (103) created a good platform for the innings, however Ramaraj struck, bowling Howard. Following the loss of a wicket, Ickleford upped their run rate, with Whelan (56) repeatedly finding the boundary, despite a very tidy spell from Matt Naeem (9-1-51-0). Whelan finally fell to Mike Robertson (7-1-43-1) when the pitch made a shorter ball rather unplayable. Cheeseman (49 not out) continued to build the total as Dermont opened up, hitting runs with aplomb. Oli Sayers (5-0-33-0) was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket with balls dropping short of fielders, however it was Rob Willoughby (4-0-28-1) finally had Dermont caught by keeper Bill Mansfield. Jupp (10 not out) joined Cheeseman see out the rest of the innings with Ickleford finishing their 45 overs on 278 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Reed’s openers Willoughby (34) and Richard Johnson started steadily, putting together a partnership of 76 before youngster Ollie Ellis-Holmes (6-0-47-1) caught Willoughby off his own bowling. The Reed batsmen continued to plug away, with Peter Baker (44) settling in at the crease and Johnson showing great temperament and skill. Another solid partnership of 124 was built, before Baker was trapped LBW by Ickleford skipper Howard (7-0-70-1). With 79 needed from 9 overs, the Reed batsmen still had a great deal of work to do. With Johnson still at the crease and Mike Robertson playing shots from the word go, Reed won the game in the 43rd over as Robertson reached 51 not out and [...]

Reed were the greatest showmen at Ampthill!

Although unbeaten as captain of the second team, Ed Garrott is yet to win a toss as skipper, and consequently Ampthill elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. The Ampthill openers started up well, and quite quickly reached 31 without loss. Giblin then with a ball, somewhere in the fine boundary between a long hop and a bouncer, surprised the Ampthill opener who skied the ball, which was well caught at point by Paul Garrott. Giblin shortly after claimed the second opener, caught, to swing the game back in Reed’s favour. From this point on, the game remained firmly in Reed’s control, with Ward unlucky not to have been rewarded for his efforts opening up. Spin twins Matt Bowles, and soon after, Ed Garrott replaced the opening attack, and further applied the pressure to Ampthill. Appropriate was the ‘Greatest Showman’ soundtrack being heard from the neighbouring Ampthill Festival, as both spinners rattled through their overs, and the Ampthill batting line up. Aided by some top-level catching from Chris Jackson at slip, both claimed 3 wickets a piece. 2 late runs outs left the hosts all out for 97, with just 32 overs bowled. Promoted from the 3rds after his recent good form, Paul Garrott certainly didn’t look out of place leading the Reed response with Richard Barlow. Both batted freely, continuing their recent form to add 60 for the first wicket. When Garrott fell bowled for 22, it was left to Jackson and Barlow to finish the game off, playing some fine shots to reach the target in the 19th over. Match Report submitted by Matt Giblin.
