Firsts fight back to draw!

The wind gusted around at 40 mph and thunder rumbled overhead at St Albans School, but Reed Firsts broke their losing streak by gaining a winning draw against Redbourn. Kallum Ward and Jack Caine continued their scoring sprees with 30 apiece, but a responsive wicket and slow outfield meant runs had to be fought for, so when the heavens opened and the gazebo, sightscreens and scoreboard blew over Reed hadn't made a hundred and were only allowed 44 overs to set a target. Max Sanderson with 17 not out and Jack Tidey (18) in their very different styles managed to boost the total to 131 in the 42nd over. At 73 for 1 Redbourn seemed to be coasting to victory, but a 14-over spell from Jack Tidey (2-33) including the wicket of the dangerous William Hales pegged back the run rate. The fight back started when Julien Fynn took two wickets in his first over, both to diving slip catches and thenceforth the Fynn brothers started to work their way through the batting order. Toby finished with 12-0-44-3 and Julien a niggardly 10-2-18-3. When the last over began, all four results were possible, but neither side could wrest a clear advantage so Redbourn finished 3 runs short on 128 for 8 from their 42 overs. Sanderson fifty not enough as Reed bow out of the National Village Cup

Reed travelled to Redbourn in the Regional Final of the National Village Cup after the game had to be rearranged due to Reed's ground being unavailable. Winning the toss, Redbourn elected to bat, they set off quickly until Jack Tidey (8-1-28-1) bowled Ed Hales for 5 with the score on 20, his brother Will fell for 28 to Toby Fynn (8-2-27-1), Fynn coming back well after his first three overs went for 22. Yorath and Cutler set about building an innings defining partnership of 146. Both fell in consecutive overs to skipper Rob Lankester (5-0-30-1) and Will Heslam (8-0-52-3). The remaining batters took Redbourn to a competitive total of 235 for 6 off their 40 overs. Will Heslam and Kallum Ward set off well in reply until Ward was caught for 10, a superb run out dismissed Sam Osborne for just 3 and when Heslam mistimed a slow ball to be caught for 16 and Reed were wobbling at 45 for 3. 17-year-old Max Sanderson came to the wicket to join Skipper Lankester and the two set about rebuilding the innings with some powerful hitting and good running between the wickets. Their partnership had reached 61, when Lankester was adjudged LBW for 33. Despite wickets falling around him Sanderson reached his well deserved fifty off 70 balls, he was the ninth wicket to fall for 52, despite a 25 run stand for the last wicket between Fynn and Giblin, Reed were all out for 175 losing by a 60 run margin. REED EDGED IN VILLAGE CUP THRILLER!

Reed fell just short in an entertaining Village Cup match at The Green on Sunday. Due to Reed's promotion to the Herts Premier League, no first team players could be selected for this year's competition despite Reed being the defending champions. Having won the toss skipper Ed Garrott put the visitors into bat. Redbourn set off at a good pace punishing anything loose from the opening bowlers Julien Fynn (7-0-41-3) and Rupert Martin (6-0-34-0). Fynn trapped Ed Hales lbw for 32 (52-1). Cutler and Will Hales then set a 109 partnership which threatened to take the game away from Reed. A great piece of fielding from Garrott eventually ran out Hales. Another 50 run partnership was broken by Karl Ward (8-0-37-2) . A flurry of late wickets left Redbourn on 237-7 at the end of their 40 overs. Reed set about the chase against the young Redbourn opening attack steadily, Rob Willoughby was the first to fall with the score on 28, Rich Barlow soon followed for 18. When skipper Garrott and then Michael Robertson fell, Reed were wobbling at 71-4. Ward and Scott Nash now began to up the run rate, Ward fell for 42, Fynn now joined Nash and they brought Reed back into the contest with a 57 partnership. Nash fell trying to hit his third consecutive six. Fynn continued with some great shots before falling for 35. Reed now needed more than ten an over. An unbeaten 23 from MJE Baker with help from both Martin and Matt Bowles left Reed just 28 runs short of their target. RESULT: REDBOURN 237 for 7 in 40 Overs beat REED 209 for 8 in 40 Overs by 28 runs. Match Report submitted by [...]
