Village Cup Victory!

For the third time in its history, Reed Cricket Club was triumphant in the Final of the National Village Cricket Championship Competition. Chasing Houghton Main's 160 for 8, Rob Lankester, (59), and Tom Greaves, (67 not out), put Reed in an unassailable position achieving victory in the 25th over with 7 wickets in hand. Such a memorable weekend. Congratulations to the players and thank you to the supporters at Lord's, those tuning-in live on radio or TV or catching up on social media or other means. We appreciate all the congratulatory messages we have received. Thank you too to the organisers at The Cricketer Magazine and to the staff at Lord's and at MCC who make the day a wonderful experience for players and spectators alike. Finally tonight, on behalf of all of us connected to Reed, I send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Ian Simon from HMCC who incurred such a sickening injury. We wish you well. The Cricketer Village Cup Final – News: Updated to 14/9/19

UPDATED: 14/9/19 For those of you unable to go to Lord’s for The Cricketer National Village Cup Final tomorrow, you may be interested to know that MCC will be providing live audio ball-by-ball commentary of the match. http://player.broadcastradio.com/lords-cricket-ground Also, BBC London is keen to film at Lord’s on Sunday and follow Reed’s day too. If you didn’t manage to hear Tom Greaves on BBC Three Counties Radio yesterday morning, the programme remains on SOUNDS on the BBC website. Search for the Andy Collins show and his interview with Tom begins at 1 hour 39 minutes and 32 seconds from the start of the programme. Similarly, Tom and Jack Tidey were interviewed on BBC Look East (West) in a three-minute segment of the programme filmed at Reed last night. That can be found on BBC iPlayer at 21 minutes and 48 seconds into the show. Make sure it is the Look East (WEST) programme. Where I live, I get Look East (EAST) and had to watch stock car racing from King’s Lynn instead! Cooper and Smith take Reed to Lord’s in a thriller on The Green

Reed will return to Lord’s on 15th September after a nail biting Semi-Final win in the National Village Cup against Hampshire’s Sarisbury Athletic. Electing to bat first, Sarisbury were indebted to their skipper Rawlins (63) who anchored the innings. At drinks the Hants. side were 84-2 and a score in excess of 200 beckoned. However, Reed skipper Tom Greaves marshalled his bowling options well and he was rewarded with a personal return of 8-1-23-2, whilst Mitchell Cooper (1-43) bowled good lines. However, it was the reintroduction of Sean Tidey (4-45) that proved decisive. After discharging his wicket-keeping duties in the first 20 overs, the younger Tidey brother removed Journeaux who was set on 40 and combining with "deputy keeper" Rob Lankester for two stumping in successive Tidey overs it left Sarisbury on 195-8 from their 40 over quota. Possibly this was 30 runs short on the Reed wicket. Reed lost Sean Tidey early when the score was 5, but Rob Lankester and Tom Greaves set about building a sound foundation. A mix up though led to Lankester being run out for 41 and when James Heslam fell in the next over, the hosts were 87-3 at drinks. Greaves fell caught for 47 trying to clear the mid-wicket boundary to get his fifty and when Mike Catt soon followed, Reed were 104-5. Stuart Smith and Mitchell Cooper now set about rebuilding the innings. Striking the bad ball and running well between the wickets the two kept Reed in the game. 72 needed from the last ten overs. Sarisbury though produced five tight overs leaving 42 required from 30 balls; the nerves were jangling. Smith and Cooper then began to hit out paticularly against wicket taker Josh [...]

Reed have the Foxes on the run!

Reed beat Foxton by eight wickets to reach the Semi-Finals of the National Village Cup, 2019 organised by The Cricketer Magazine. Electing to bat first on a pitch that had yielded 600 runs plus the previous day in a Cambs. League match, Foxton found it hard going as Reed’s opening bowling pair of Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey gave very little away. Fynn struck first bowling Hooley and when Tidey bowled Lawrence, the hosts were wobbling at 26 for 2. Enter former Reed player (and twice NVC winner) Will Heslam (83) who built successive partnerships of 66 with Cei Sanderson (28) and skipper Webster (42) to bring Foxton to 175 for 3, however the returning Fynn (ending with 5 for 34) and skipper Tom Greaves (3 for 43) bowled well in the last four overs as Foxton lost their last seven wickets for just 31 runs. Reed set about their reply in quick fashion, they did lose Sean Tidey for 9, but Rob Lankester (73) joined Rich Wharton and they built a match winning 178-run partnership for the second wicket. Great placement around the wicket from both batsmen was helped by some erratic Foxton bowling. Lankester departed with only 11 more runs left to win and the only matter remaining was whether Wharton would reach his century. Sadly he ended three runs short on a nevertheless superb 97 not out, as Matt Sampson hit the winning boundary. Reed reached their target with 25 balls to spare. Foxton 206 all out in 39.5 overs: Reed 210 for 2 in 35.5 overs. Reed will now face Hampshire side Sarisbury Athletic on The Green in the Semi-Final on Sunday 4th August starting at 1300hrs. Big Jack bags six!

Reed welcomed Kent champions, Borstal, in the sixth round of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Batting first after losing the toss, Borstal's openers were quickly into their stride and were 34 in the sixth over with James Whitnell looking particularly threatening on 25 exhibiting some handsome drives. But it was Jack Tidey bowling uphill who struck by having Pound caught behind for 10 then Thomas Tingley clean bowled next ball for 0. Daniel Tingley followed in Tidey's next over, again caught by wicket keeper Richard Wharton for 1. Wharton went on to take three more catches, one a spectacular left handed take down the leg side off Tidey. His other catches being off Toby Fynn and Tom Greaves. By the time Jack Tidey finished his eight-over spell his figures were 6 for 21 ensuring that Borstal were beyond rescue. Mortimore had a bit of a dart at Mitchell Cooper's bowling but perished for 20 caught by Jack Caine to give Greaves his second wicket, (2 for 14), and Cooper adding a wicket of his own. Borstal all out for 83 in the 23rd over. Although aiming at a small target, Reed did not have it all their own way when both Wharton and Sean Tidey were back in hutch with only 20 on the board. Rob Lankester and James Heslam batted sensibly until Lankester failed to execute a reverse sweep and was bowled for 30 when the Reed score was on 54. Stuart Smith joined Heslam and they drew closer to the Borstal total, but with only 3 required, Smith mistimed a lofted drive and was caught at mid-on for 15. Stoke stroked out!

Reed played host to Buckinghamshire Champions Stoke Green on Sunday at the Green in the last 32 of the National Village Cup knock-out competition. In front of a good crowd, Reed skipper Tom Greaves won the toss and elected to field. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey opened the bowling for the home side, and it couldn’t have got off to a better start, Fynn having opener Parmar well caught by Greaves for a duck from the 3rd ball of the day. This set the tone for the innings with a superb bowling and fielding display from the two-time champions. Stoke Green were reduced to 18 for 5 once Tidey (8-1-18-1) and Fynn (8-1-16-4) had bowled out. Reed allrounder Mitchell Cooper was introduced to the attack along with Greaves and although they looked to be troubling the batsman, the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt well. Having got to 57 for 5 Greaves struck but again the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt, Ghumann in particular batted beautifully as he passed 50. This left it to Reed's second change pair of Sean Tidey (2.5-0-17-3) and Jack Caine (3-0-22-1) to mop up the tail and bowl Stoke Green out for 141. A score that looked well under par on a decent batting wicket at the Green. After a very enjoyable Tea, Reed openers Sean Tidey and Richard Wharton set about knocking the runs off. Sean in particular, looked in a very aggressive mood and almost in the blink of an eye was passed his 50, with a mix of classy strokes and lusty blows, meanwhile Wharton was knocking the ball around nicely in typical fashion. Reed Press-on after Preston

Reed 1st XI versus Preston 1st XI. Regional Final, (Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Group), National Village Cup, 2019. Reed made short work of the Beds & Herts Regional Final by bowling out Preston for 104 in the 36th over then cracking 105 for 2 within 15 overs. Initially, Preston got off to a good start thanks to some powerful drives by James Stevens (23), but once he was snaffled by a diving Rob Lankester at backward point off Jack Tidey’s bowling, the visitors lost regular wickets although number 4, Morecroft put up some resistance with 27. Toby Fynn and the elder Tidey bowled a good line and length and this combined with some excellent ground fielding, put Preston under pressure. Tom Greaves and Mitchell Copper replaced them and snared 2 wickets each then Sean Tidey contributed another. Meanwhile, Jack Caine came on from the other end and cleaned up the tail taking an excellent 4 for 13. Reed’s openers got the innings off to a flying start with Richard Wharton hitting the first delivery, (which was a No Ball), for a six! Even though he fell soon after, Reed were without mercy as the belligerent Sean Tidey scored an array of shots round the Green in his 65. Rob Lankester was 27 not out when Reed overhauled Preston’s total with 8 wickets in hand. Stoke Green CC won the Buckinghamshire Final and will be Reed’s next opponents in the 5th Round.
