New Cup but familiar result as Reed win the revamped Keatley Cup competition

What a day, what a result! Reed entered a young side representing a range of the club’s sides for The Keatley Cup’s reformed format. Reed’s six players were Joe Graves, Sean Tidey, Tom Walsingham, Rhodri Hughes, Rob Lankester and team skipper Marcus J.E. Baker. The new format asked each side to bowl five overs, one over each from every fielder except the wicket-keeper. Reed fielded first in the first game against Thriplow and kept them to 42. Two wickets went to the deadly Rhodri Hughes and two stumpings and a run out to Baker with the gloves. Learning from what they had seen Reed saw that it was a slow and low pitch and that good running was more crucial to big hitting. Lankester and Tidey did the damage in chasing down the target easily. In the second match against the talented Lord’s Taverners Buccaneers, Reed found themselves chasing a total of 64. It proved too much as Reed finished twenty runs short. In the final round-robin encounter against hosts Royston CC, Reed openers Tidey and Lankester recorded a competition top score of 77 in their innings. More superb bowling restricted Royston and left them well short. This put Reed into the final. Reed faced-up against the Lord’s Taverners Buccaneers in the final, who were by far the most talented side on show. Baker won the toss and inserted the opposition. Sean Tidey bowled a fantastic opening over which conceded very few runs. Walsingham, Hughes and Graves followed up with some more good bowling. Buccaneers struggled to reach the boundary whilst Reed’s energetic fielding restricted the running between the wickets. Rob Lankester delivered a great last over which led to the Buccaneers posting what for [...]

Keatley Cup Final 1984

Keatley Cup Final 1984 REED STORM TO KEATLEY VICTORY --- but Sabey wins 'Man of the Match' award Foxton 112-6 Reed 113-6Reed lifted the Keatley Cup for the second year running on Tuesday evening when they beat Foxton in a nail-biting finish. The North Herts League side appeared to be coasting to victory when Brian Bevan and Michael Jackson put together a useful opening stand. But when Jackson departed for 15 and John Heslam was caught behind for 2, Foxton seemed to have gained a chance for victory. But the vital breakthrough came when Bevan skied a shot and wicket-keeper Perett ran several yard to collect it safely -- Reed's top scorer was gone for 36. Reed's target of 113 now looked a long way off but the two Richards, Apperley and Robertson came together to get the winning runs and give Reed victory by four wicket margins with just one over to spare. Earlier, Foxton had scored 112 mainly due to a superb innings of 55 from Nigel Sabey, which also earned his side some consolation as his score earned him the man of the match award from adjudicator, Bob Wilson.

Keatley Cup Final 1985

Keatley Cup Final 1985 REED WIN THRILLER Keatley Cup Final Royston 103-4 Reed 105-6Reed lifted the Keatley Cup for the third year in succession on Tuesday night in a nail biting finish on the Heath. The village side always looked comfortable but they left it late to score the winning runs -- reaching their target with just two balls left. Earlier, Royston had scored steadily but their total of 103 never looked like being enough to take the game. Nigel Gadsby top scored with 33 Simon Bishop adding 24 but it took a partnership between Gerry Grote (18) and Doug Collard (13) to take the score into three figures. All of Reed's bowlers produced economical figures with Clive Collins claiming 2-21. Matthew Gray notched up an early scalp when he cleaned bowled the ever dangerous Brian Bevan for eight. But then Peter King (13) and John Heslam (39) boosted the total and set Reed on the road to victory. Richard Apperley (19) made a vital contribution to the total but it was left to Richie Robertson and Mike Taylor to get the winning runs. In a drama-drenched last over they edged ever closer to the Royston total before Robertson gave his side the trophy with a four in the dying moments of the game. Royston player, Alan Price, nominated Reed skipper John Heslam as man of the match.
