Captain’s Ton not enough

Reed III travelled to Holtwhites Trinibis 3rds on a small ground and a flat track. Reed skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss and decided to bowl first looking to chase. The skipper might have looked to regret that decision when Holtwhites got off to a fast start, taking a liking to Owen Hughes (9-0-63-1). However, Joe Graves (9-1-35-2) picked up both openers. Holtwhites then started to build another partnership with Prince and Turner batting nicely punishing the bad ball. Greg Mckinnel (9-0-65-1) then picked up Turner. Holtwhites kept building partnerships, however, Will Archer (8.2-1-37-3) bowled nicely picking up 3 well deserved wickets. Skipper Rhodri Hughes (6-0-38-2) chipped in with a couple of wickets. Reed managed to bowl out Holtwhites for 274 in 41.2 overs, with R.Watson making the tail wag a bit for a well-played 47. The score looked gettable on a small ground and a fast outfield. Reed did not start off well losing Paul Garrott, Kieren Willoughby and Marcus Baker early leaving Reed 26 for 3 after 7 overs. However, skipper Rhodri Hughes came in with Rob Willoughby and started to build a partnership, running hard between the wickets and punishing the bad ball taking the score to 128-3 at drinks, putting Reed in a position to look like they could chase down the score. Rob and Rhodri continued in similar fashion, until Rob was stumped for an excellent 68, with the pair putting on 147 for the 4th wicket. Owen Hughes joined his brother and looked to build another partnership, they kept running between the wickets well and punishing the bad ball. Reed 3rds promotion hunt is halted

Reed 3rds headed to a blustery Holtwhites Trinibis 3’s, skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss again and elected to bowl. Reed started well with the ball with Owen Hughes and Kieran McKinna opening the bowling and Owen taking 2 early wickets (9-2-36-2). Kieran also took a wicket ending on 9-1-45-2. Holtwhites were in trouble at 24 for 3. They began a rebuild with Islam taking a very aggressive approach getting 52 quickly until Steve Hughes (8.2-1-23-1) came on and took his wicket. Reed could have had him a lot earlier if it wasn’t for dropped catches. Reed started to tie Holtwhites down but couldn’t get the wickets they were looking for with more dropped catches. C. Garnsworthy batted patiently hitting the bad balls to the boundary with 74 not out taking Holtwhites' score to 247-6. This score could have been considerably less if the fielding had been better. Reed’s reply started well with Richard Johnson and Paul Garrott taking the total to 35 before Paul was bowled. Then Johnson fell soon after and a mini-collapse soon occurred where Mike Robertson, Rhodri Hughes and Scott Nash fell cheaply leaving Reed 86 for 5, where the Holtwhites bowlers were extracting extra bounce from the wicket. Reed began to rebuild with George Garrott and Owen Hughes batting sensibly by rotating the strike well and putting the bad ball away. They put on 65 until George was out for 48 to a low full toss. REED TWOS KEEP MARCHING ON TOGETHER

On Saturday Reed 2nds travelled down the A10 towards Enfield to take on Holtwhites Trinibis 2nds. With the teams at opposite ends of the table, nothing but a win was acceptable for the away side in their push for promotion. Reed skipper Ed Garrott won his first toss of the season and opted to bat first on what looked like a good pitch. With usual openers Frenay and Barlow missing, Garrott promoted himself and opened the batting alongside Richard ‘Tonza’ Johnson. The pair looked steady, taking regular quick singles and putting the bad ball away to the boundary, before Garrott inside edged Weston on to his stumps for 13. With the score on 24 in came Chris Jackson who alongside Johnson kept the scoreboard ticking over at a steady rate until Johnson fell for a well-made 41 and Reed were 89-2 from 21 overs. George Teeboon was promoted to number 4 for his first bat of the season. 240 looked to be par and Teeboon and Jackson started to take the attack to the Holtwhites’ bowlers, both presented opportunities but the home side’s fielding was poor and they couldn’t hold on to their catches. Jackson made them pay passing 50 and Teeboon hit some nice boundaries until trying one big shot too many, he was eventually caught for 45. Reed were 182-3 from 39 overs when Mitchell Cooper strode to the crease. Cooper and Jackson both knew they had to score quickly if they were to post a defendable total and they did just that. Barlow and Sandford put runs in the bank

Reed Second XI, Herts League, Division 4B. Rain showers filled the air as new second team skipper, Ed Garrott started off the side’s 2019 campaign. Ed lost the toss and the opposition, newly promoted Holtwhites Trinibis elected to bowl first.The Reed squad were kept busy, taking the covers on and off between two short rain delays, after which the match was reduced to 46 overs per side. Rich Barlow led from the top, and looked in fine form as he built his innings. Unfortunately Reed lost fellow opener Frenay without scoring, and Jackson soon after to find themselves in a precarious position at 27-2. Barlow and Smith put on just under 50 for the 3rd wicket, rebuilding the Reed innings, whist being kept busy running between the wickets. A slow outfield from the earlier rain meant many balls that would normally have gone for 4, stopped within the ropes. Smith fell to a quick reaction caught & bowled, with the score at 74 for 3. In at number five came new signing for the season, James Sandford. Sandford took the attack to the Holtwhites bowlers, and played some fine shots including some well struck boundaries, while Barlow also looked to up the run rate at the opposite end. Barlow eventually fell caught, for 75, an innings that perhaps would have amounted to a century in drier conditions. With a strong squad, Ed Garrott batted himself and Marcus Martin lower down the order. Martin fell cheaply for 6, while Garrott looked in good touch for his 24.
