Action Jackson and Magnificent Martin keep the Seconds top of the pile

Reed Seconds kept up their good form with a solid performance against Hitchin Seconds at The Green. Electing to bat first on a slow pitch, openers Barlow and Frenay (46) put on 57 for the first wicket. The introduction of Patadia sent both openers back to the pavilion with 88 on the board. Enter Chris Jackson who hadn’t been dismissed in his four previous knocks. Reed upped the ante after drinks with Jackson building partnerships with Marcus Martin (24) , Jack Caine (19) and skipper Ed Garrott (21). A late burst of runs pushed Reed over the 200 mark finishing on 222-6 from their 50 overs. Hitchin started their chase quickly with Chris Maylin (55) and Bayston (36) putting on 69 for the first wicket. Ed Garrott brought himself on and trapped Bayston lbw. Then the first of three run outs, this one by Marcus Martin, brought Reed back into contention at drinks. Again it was the drinks break that proved the innings turning point. Hitchin slumped from 107-2 to 160-8. Matt Bowles (2-34) and Marcus Martin with a match winning (4-27) pushed Reed towards victory backed by superb catching, Matt Giblin and Phil Frenay in particular, and the two further run-outs, (both by skipper Garrott), Hitchin were dismissed in the 49th over for 186, leaving Reed winners by 36 runs. Reed stay top of Division 4B with five matches remaining in the League Season. Reed 2nd XI 222-6 in 50 overs (30 pts.) beat Hitchin 2nd XI 186 all out in 48.1 overs (12 pts.) by 36 runs. Reed II go top as Jackson tons up again

Reed 2nds surged to the top of Division 4B after sweeping aside struggling Sawbridgeworth 2nds. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, which they may have regretted when the in-form Richard Johnson nicked off second ball of the game. However this only served to bring Chris Jackson to the crease to join Phil Frenay. Jackson, fresh off of the back of an unbeaten century last week, picked up where he left off as he steadily and classily accumulated runs throughout the innings. He was ably supported by Phil Frenay (26), skipper Ed Garrott (43) and Marcus Baker (36 not out). Jackson carried his bat from the first over of the game, finishing on a magnificent 125 not out. That’s now 287 runs for Jackson without being dismissed. Reed finishing on 261 for 5. Sawbo’s response never really got going as Matt Giblin (7-2-15-2) continued his good form with two early wickets, ably supported by the miserly Rupert Martin (10-1-27-1), which along with a stunning run out by Matt Bowles at backward point, left the visitors 31 for 4. An aggressive middle order partnership, aided and abetted by some suspect Reed catching, did allow some form of recovery, but Julien Fynn (9-0-41-4) plugged away up the hill and deservedly picked up four wickets as his own good form continued. Another run out, this time from George Teeboon and a sharp caught and bowled by skipper Garrott then wrapped up the Sawbo innings on 134 all out. Reed won by 127 runs. Match Report submitted by MLB.

REED TWOS KEEP MARCHING ON TOGETHER

On Saturday Reed 2nds travelled down the A10 towards Enfield to take on Holtwhites Trinibis 2nds. With the teams at opposite ends of the table, nothing but a win was acceptable for the away side in their push for promotion. Reed skipper Ed Garrott won his first toss of the season and opted to bat first on what looked like a good pitch. With usual openers Frenay and Barlow missing, Garrott promoted himself and opened the batting alongside Richard ‘Tonza’ Johnson. The pair looked steady, taking regular quick singles and putting the bad ball away to the boundary, before Garrott inside edged Weston on to his stumps for 13. With the score on 24 in came Chris Jackson who alongside Johnson kept the scoreboard ticking over at a steady rate until Johnson fell for a well-made 41 and Reed were 89-2 from 21 overs. George Teeboon was promoted to number 4 for his first bat of the season. 240 looked to be par and Teeboon and Jackson started to take the attack to the Holtwhites’ bowlers, both presented opportunities but the home side’s fielding was poor and they couldn’t hold on to their catches. Jackson made them pay passing 50 and Teeboon hit some nice boundaries until trying one big shot too many, he was eventually caught for 45. Reed were 182-3 from 39 overs when Mitchell Cooper strode to the crease. Cooper and Jackson both knew they had to score quickly if they were to post a defendable total and they did just that. Reed were the greatest showmen at Ampthill!

Although unbeaten as captain of the second team, Ed Garrott is yet to win a toss as skipper, and consequently Ampthill elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. The Ampthill openers started up well, and quite quickly reached 31 without loss. Giblin then with a ball, somewhere in the fine boundary between a long hop and a bouncer, surprised the Ampthill opener who skied the ball, which was well caught at point by Paul Garrott. Giblin shortly after claimed the second opener, caught, to swing the game back in Reed’s favour. From this point on, the game remained firmly in Reed’s control, with Ward unlucky not to have been rewarded for his efforts opening up. Spin twins Matt Bowles, and soon after, Ed Garrott replaced the opening attack, and further applied the pressure to Ampthill. Appropriate was the ‘Greatest Showman’ soundtrack being heard from the neighbouring Ampthill Festival, as both spinners rattled through their overs, and the Ampthill batting line up. Aided by some top-level catching from Chris Jackson at slip, both claimed 3 wickets a piece. 2 late runs outs left the hosts all out for 97, with just 32 overs bowled. Promoted from the 3rds after his recent good form, Paul Garrott certainly didn’t look out of place leading the Reed response with Richard Barlow. Both batted freely, continuing their recent form to add 60 for the first wicket. When Garrott fell bowled for 22, it was left to Jackson and Barlow to finish the game off, playing some fine shots to reach the target in the 19th over. Match Report submitted by Matt Giblin.

Cooper bombs Reed to victory

Reed 2s got back to winning ways after beating Stevenage 2s in a high scoring, rain reduced game at The Green, owing a significant debt to groundsman Richard Robertson in the process for working wonders to get the game on. Reed skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to bat in a reduced 40 overs per side game. They lost Richard Barlow early, and despite some lovely shots, Richard Johnson also fell for 28 to leave Reed 57 for 2. Chris Jackson (27) and James Sandford (42) both batted well for Reed and took the score to 130 for 4 before Garrott and Rob Willoughby (16) then set about upping the pace. Garrott batted sublimely as he reached an unbeaten 50 as the score progressed towards 200. However the Reed innings got its real injection of pace when Mitchell Cooper came to the crease. He hit a swashbuckling 56 not out off of just 20 balls, including 6 "maximums". Cooper’s assault was brutal and gave Reed a daunting total of 248 for 4 in their 40 overs. Cooper (5-0-21-1) then took the new ball and snared an early Stevenage wicket, but the visitors continued to play their shots and kept up well with the rate. The introduction of Alex Kelly (8-1-49-2) did get Reed a couple of crucial breakthroughs but Stevenage continued to amass runs as they progressed towards 150. However the spin of Garrott (6-1-30-1) and Matt Bowles (7-0-32-2) and an excellent Richard Barlow run out was the key to halting the progress of Stevenage as they eventually fell 36 runs short, on 212 for 8. In the absence of usual skipper, Ed Garrott, the Second team vice-captain Karl Ward won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Richard Barlow and Richard Johnson, the latter falling early without troubling the scorers. Stuart Smith joined Barlow at the crease, and both looked in good touch, putting on 52 runs for the second wicket, before Barlow fell for 24. The in-form James Sandford joined Smith, who continued to build the innings. Both Smith and Sandford played some great shots, but unfortunately fell just short of their fifties. After a few more quick wickets including two run outs, Reed looked like they might fall short of a strong total, when they were reduced to 164 for 7. Luckily some late order hitting from Ward and Matthew Bowles, who added 47 together for the 8th wicket, took Reed up to a more than respectable total of 213 for 9, Ward finishing the innings on 40 not out. With the pressure of runs on the board, the Watford Town openers took the attack to the Reed openers, from the start of the innings. Openers Ward and Matt Giblin plugged away, with no prevail, until with the score at 41, Giblin found the outside edge of opener Nasar, and ‘One of the best catches ever seen at Reed’ was pouched by Mitchell Cooper at first slip. Rupert Martin replaced Ward bowling down the hill, and claimed the next two wickets, firstly Watford’s no. 3, LBW, and then grabbing a well-reacted caught and bowled to dismiss the other opening batsman. Giblin’s high five as Reed II dismantle Sawbo

Reed 2s crushed Sawbridgeworth 2s to claim back-to-back league wins at the start of the Herts League season. Skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to take the field. From there on in things were very one-sided. The hosts lost a wicket in the first over in a sign of things to come, as Matt Giblin tore through the Sawbo top order. They were soon 18-5 whilst Giblin (9.5-1-21-5) bowled terrifically and deservedly snared his first 5-wicket haul in League cricket since he was 17. A direct hit run out from Phil ‘Stokes’ Frenay and a wicket apiece from spin twins Ed Garrott (8-3-15-1) and Matt Bowles (7-2-12-1) meant Sawbo we’re bundled out for just 74. Reed’s response with the bat was equally emphatic, despite the early loss of Richard Johnson. Phil Frenay (50 not out) and Chris Jackson (23 not out) went about chasing down the total in just 16 overs, with Frenay in a particularly destructive mood. Match Reports submitted by MLB.

Barlow and Sandford put runs in the bank

Reed Second XI, Herts League, Division 4B. Rain showers filled the air as new second team skipper, Ed Garrott started off the side’s 2019 campaign. Ed lost the toss and the opposition, newly promoted Holtwhites Trinibis elected to bowl first.The Reed squad were kept busy, taking the covers on and off between two short rain delays, after which the match was reduced to 46 overs per side. Rich Barlow led from the top, and looked in fine form as he built his innings. Unfortunately Reed lost fellow opener Frenay without scoring, and Jackson soon after to find themselves in a precarious position at 27-2. Barlow and Smith put on just under 50 for the 3rd wicket, rebuilding the Reed innings, whist being kept busy running between the wickets. A slow outfield from the earlier rain meant many balls that would normally have gone for 4, stopped within the ropes. Smith fell to a quick reaction caught & bowled, with the score at 74 for 3. In at number five came new signing for the season, James Sandford. Sandford took the attack to the Holtwhites bowlers, and played some fine shots including some well struck boundaries, while Barlow also looked to up the run rate at the opposite end. Barlow eventually fell caught, for 75, an innings that perhaps would have amounted to a century in drier conditions. With a strong squad, Ed Garrott batted himself and Marcus Martin lower down the order. Martin fell cheaply for 6, while Garrott looked in good touch for his 24. Mitchell Cooper hit a quick fire 35 off just 25 balls, with late order support from Ward, and Bowles. Reed ended their innings having posted 238. Opening the attack [...]
