Big Jack bags six!

Reed welcomed Kent champions, Borstal, in the sixth round of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Batting first after losing the toss, Borstal's openers were quickly into their stride and were 34 in the sixth over with James Whitnell looking particularly threatening on 25 exhibiting some handsome drives. But it was Jack Tidey bowling uphill who struck by having Pound caught behind for 10 then Thomas Tingley clean bowled next ball for 0. Daniel Tingley followed in Tidey's next over, again caught by wicket keeper Richard Wharton for 1. Wharton went on to take three more catches, one a spectacular left handed take down the leg side off Tidey. His other catches being off Toby Fynn and Tom Greaves. By the time Jack Tidey finished his eight-over spell his figures were 6 for 21 ensuring that Borstal were beyond rescue. Mortimore had a bit of a dart at Mitchell Cooper's bowling but perished for 20 caught by Jack Caine to give Greaves his second wicket, (2 for 14), and Cooper adding a wicket of his own. Borstal all out for 83 in the 23rd over. Although aiming at a small target, Reed did not have it all their own way when both Wharton and Sean Tidey were back in hutch with only 20 on the board. Rob Lankester and James Heslam batted sensibly until Lankester failed to execute a reverse sweep and was bowled for 30 when the Reed score was on 54. Stuart Smith joined Heslam and they drew closer to the Borstal total, but with only 3 required, Smith mistimed a lofted drive and was caught at mid-on for 15. It left Marcus Martin to come in at number six to partner Heslam, [...]

Broodryk century defeats Reed 1sts

A century partnership between South African Jayden Broodryk (105 not out) and Todd Sturdy (54) turned the game Hoddesdon's way after they lost their first 3 wickets for just 12 runs. On a dry wicket which encouraged movement and spin, they were the only batsmen to really play themselves in, although they survived a number of close calls and several half chances. After Ed Wharton (1-19) and Jack Tidey (2-34) made those early breakthroughs, Reed were frustrated and even spin twins Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey could only muster a wicket apiece as their opposition raced to their target at 5 runs an over. Having won the toss, Reed struggled on the surface to match their customary scoring rate, despite Ed Wharton's flamboyant 39. Hoddesdon's bowlers: Bill Thorne (2-44), James Curtis (4-63) from 20 overs apiece and Harry Mason with 2-24 made them have to work for their runs and wickets fell at regular intervals. At lunch. on 94-6, a low total was on the cards, but a gritty 37 by Richard Wharton and more fluent 24 by Jack Caine gave the innings respectability. However, the unbeaten last wicket partnership of 40 between Jack Tidey (39 not out) and Toby Fynn (11 not out) took the score to 188-9, making Reed more hopeful at the break. Broodryk's imperious century denied them and with Shenley Village losing, it took Hoddesdon back to the top of the table. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Stoke stroked out!

Reed played host to Buckinghamshire Champions Stoke Green on Sunday at the Green in the last 32 of the National Village Cup knock-out competition. In front of a good crowd, Reed skipper Tom Greaves won the toss and elected to field. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey opened the bowling for the home side, and it couldn’t have got off to a better start, Fynn having opener Parmar well caught by Greaves for a duck from the 3rd ball of the day. This set the tone for the innings with a superb bowling and fielding display from the two-time champions. Stoke Green were reduced to 18 for 5 once Tidey (8-1-18-1) and Fynn (8-1-16-4) had bowled out. Reed allrounder Mitchell Cooper was introduced to the attack along with Greaves and although they looked to be troubling the batsman, the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt well. Having got to 57 for 5 Greaves struck but again the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt, Ghumann in particular batted beautifully as he passed 50. This left it to Reed's second change pair of Sean Tidey (2.5-0-17-3) and Jack Caine (3-0-22-1) to mop up the tail and bowl Stoke Green out for 141. A score that looked well under par on a decent batting wicket at the Green. After a very enjoyable Tea, Reed openers Sean Tidey and Richard Wharton set about knocking the runs off. Sean in particular, looked in a very aggressive mood and almost in the blink of an eye was passed his 50, with a mix of classy strokes and lusty blows, meanwhile Wharton was knocking the ball around nicely in typical fashion. With the score at 88, Tidey went for one blow too many as he [...]

The Whartons dominate Dunstable

Reed continued their league form with a comfortable 7 wicket win, albeit against a Dunstable side severely weakened by a stag party. Having inserted their hosts, the Reed bowlers kept a tight hold on their top order, restricting them to 119-5 from 50 overs. This was especially due to the remarkable 20 over spell by Jack Tidey, who bowled unchanged and finished with six maidens after lunch. His final figures read 20-10-32-2. However they could not dismiss Brad Matthews, twice putting him down, and they were made to rue those misses as he opened his shoulders in the last 10 overs, scoring an undefeated 91 in Dunstable's 198 for 6, Ed Wharton and Zac McGuigan were the other wicket takers with run-outs from the latter and Jack Caine. Fearing another destructive spell from Luke Cherry, Reed's habitual nemesis, Ed Wharton decided attack was the order of the day and promptly smashed him out of the attack. Indeed he conceded an unprecedented 46 from his first 7 overs. With his brother, Richard (31) at the other end, the Whartons added 116 runs in 18 overs until both were bowled in successive overs, Ed frustratingly dismissed for 94 - the second time he had just missed a century this season. A more measured partnership of 71 between Jack Caine (38 not out) and James Heslam (19 not out) ensued, safely steering Reed to 200 for 3. Reed are still third, but just 10 points behind the leaders, their conquerors last week, Shenley Village. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Reed 1sts meet their match in Nissen

Reed were blown away by Australian-born paceman, Kris Nissen, who finished with figures of 17-8-33-6. However even these did not reflect his dominance as 4 of his victims were clean bowled by fast swinging yorkers. Only 3 Reed batsmen reached double figures with Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves top scoring with 20 apiece. As a result the hosts managed just 106 in 37 overs. All this was in contrast to the start of the match when Ed Wharton (1 for 8) and Jack Tidey (2 for 6) reduced Shenley Village to 5 for 3 on a rain affected wicket. Yet it was Nissen again who thwarted the bowlers scoring a stylish 44 in spite of the conditions. Tom Greaves kept chipping away though, taking 4 for 58 and their opponents struggled to 138 for 9 from their 60 overs, but it proved to be plenty in the end. Reed therefore surrendered their unbeaten record this season, as well as second place in the league to their opponents. Match Report submitted but Peter Wholley.

Reed Press-on after Preston

Reed 1st XI versus Preston 1st XI. Regional Final, (Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Group), National Village Cup, 2019. Reed made short work of the Beds & Herts Regional Final by bowling out Preston for 104 in the 36th over then cracking 105 for 2 within 15 overs. Initially, Preston got off to a good start thanks to some powerful drives by James Stevens (23), but once he was snaffled by a diving Rob Lankester at backward point off Jack Tidey’s bowling, the visitors lost regular wickets although number 4, Morecroft put up some resistance with 27. Toby Fynn and the elder Tidey bowled a good line and length and this combined with some excellent ground fielding, put Preston under pressure. Tom Greaves and Mitchell Copper replaced them and snared 2 wickets each then Sean Tidey contributed another. Meanwhile, Jack Caine came on from the other end and cleaned up the tail taking an excellent 4 for 13. Reed’s openers got the innings off to a flying start with Richard Wharton hitting the first delivery, (which was a No Ball), for a six! Even though he fell soon after, Reed were without mercy as the belligerent Sean Tidey scored an array of shots round the Green in his 65. Rob Lankester was 27 not out when Reed overhauled Preston’s total with 8 wickets in hand. Stoke Green CC won the Buckinghamshire Final and will be Reed’s next opponents in the 5th Round. This will be at Reed on Sunday 23rd June starting at 1300hrs. Match Report submitted by PGB.

Leverstock Green make Reed 1sts sweat

At 89-7 chasing 256 Leverstock Green looked dead and buried, but a fighting stand of 94 by the swashbuckling Vallance Morris (43) and the steady Jamie Wallis (30), aided by 25 wides, threatened an amazing comeback in the afternoon heat. However, with the introduction of Ed Wharton, who bowled both of them, claiming 2-34, Reed managed a 50 run victory. Earlier Tom Greaves with 3 wickets, including a stunning diving catch in the outfield by Matt Sampson to remove the dangerous Lewis Koch for a rapid 31, and 2 wickets for Toby Fynn had the opposition on the rack. In their innings, Reed had accumulated steadily with twenties from Rob Lankester and Sampson, the latter putting on 70 with Zac McGuigan, who made an accomplished 66.Yet when both were removed in successive overs a below par score seemed likely. Step up Stuart Smith, striking 11 boundaries in his 58 together with Marcus Martin (22) in a partnership of 81, which accelerated the innings towards 250. The tail did the rest. Reed have now won their first four league games this season. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Reed openers in mammoth stand

NATIONAL VILLAGE CUP, ROUND 3. An under strength Sharnbrook and Bromham side encountered a Reed side in scintillating form in the third round of the Village Cup. Sean Tidey and Richard Wharton capitalised to the tune of 249 runs in 32 overs before Tidey was caught for a brutal 147 from 93 balls.Wharton continued to reach his own century (108 not out) whilst Rob Lankester (20) and Jack Tidey (23 not out) maintained the scoring rate. An understandably demoralised opposition were then skittled out for 55 as Tom Greaves (4-11) and Toby Fynn (3-17) raced through their 8 overs in case rain intervened. However it was left to Sean Tidey and Stuart Smith to polish off the tail. Reed will now face local rivals Preston in the Regional Final on June 9th on The Green. It’s an Ed Wharton deja-vu!

Reed 1st XI. For the second match running Ed Wharton drove Reed to a comfortable victory, this time against last year's Premiership side Letchworth. Following last week's 91. Wharton hit 86 not out with 11 fours and two maximums. Once again he shared an impressive opening partnership of 79 in 16 overs with Zac McGuigan (31) as they matched each other run for run. After that, with Rob Lankester (19) in a supporting role, they nearly doubled the score until the latter was bowled by the only bowler to contain them, the evergreen Maxford Pipe (10-2-31-1) with the last ball of his spell. James Heslam hit the winning boundary in the 31st over. Reed 168-2. This cavalier approach was made possible by another fine all round effort with the ball. Wharton removed captain Tom Simmons early on to an excellent catch by Heslam and Jack Tidey took out the other opener through a diving catch by Richard Wharton to leave Letchworth 37-2 after the power play. Toby Fynn (10-0-33-1) and McGuigan (10-1-33-3) both contained and dismissed the middle order, leaving the lower order to be shared by spinners Sean Tidey and Tom Greaves, Greaves returning the impressive figures of 3-25 from his allocation. This fine win puts Reed on top of the table having gained maximum points from all three of their matches. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Tidey enough!

Reed First XI, National Village Cup, Round 2. Reed welcomed Division 1 Sawbridgeworth to The Green on Sunday in pursuit of their third Lord’s victory in 7 years in the National Village Cup. Reed Skipper Greaves won the toss and had no hesitation In asking the visitors to bat. Reed’s opening pair Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn bowled solidly to start with Jack picking up an early wicket, trapping R. Sanders bang in front for 8. Each of the opening bowlers bowled tight spells and after 10 over Greaves brought himself and spin twin Sean Tidey into the attack. The introduction of spin then changed the game all together. Both bowled 8 overs straight returning combined figures of 6 for 45 in 16 overs. The opening pair of Jack and Toby came back and wrapped the tail up convincingly and Sawbridgeworth were all out in 29.1 overs for an under par score of 92. After a typically excellent Sunday afternoon tea, Reed’s openers Richard Wharton and Sean Tidey set to work on knocking off the required runs. Sean in particular took a liking to S.Black hitting him for several boundaries, although once he made a very quick fire 32, Black had Tidey bowled going for one shot too many. The wicket brought vice-captain Rob Lankester to the crease and he and Wharton calmly knocked off the remaining runs with ease as Reed cruised home with 9 wickets in hand inside 14 overs. Reed will be welcoming Sharnbrook & Bromham (Bedfordshire) in the next round up at The Green on Sunday 26th of May. Match Report submitted by TDG.
