Greaves’s and Lankester’s efforts in vain again

Two half centuries by Tom Greaves (50) and Rob Lankester (58) failed to gain the Firsts a win in this top division once again. After losing both openers early on, the two came together to take the score to 103-2 despite some very tight bowling by the entire Harpenden attack. Indeed captain Nick Lamb made 11 bowling changes to keep the batsmen (and bowlers!) on their toes, which finally wore down their patience as both were out trying to force the run rate to match their opponents 187. Another left arm spinner, Ashleigh Sivirajah, caused them their main problems with his unrelenting accuracy, finishing with figures of 10-3-12-3. The last 8 wickets fell for 45 as the lower order subsided against his spin and fast pace of Chad Barrett (3-22). Earlier, Reed's bowlers toiled manfully to keep a skilful batting unit to 187 all out. The wickets were shared evenly, although there was another notable performance by leg spinner Kapil Dave (2-29) including both Harpenden's top scorers , Lamb (39) and Barrett (49) as his victims. Ed Wharton (2-27) and Mitchell Cooper (2-13 plus a run out) removed the tail for just 23 runs. Reed took all 7 bowling points, but fell agonisingly 2 runs short of a second batting point. Nevertheless the sharp running between the wickets and much better accuracy of the bowling (just one wide and one no ball) gave hope for better results to come. It needs more batsmen to come to the party however. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Deja vu at Hoddie

Games at Lowfield are invariably tight affairs for the Firsts and this was no exception. Two years ago Hoddesdon pipped Reed to the Championship title here and before that a high scoring encounter ended with the scores tied. This time the hosts won by two wickets in an exciting, nerve jangling match which see-sawed backwards and forwards. Ed Wharton (14) and Will Heslam (17) carefully negotiated the accurate opening attack of new acquisition, South African paceman Matt Varner and perennially miserly Martin Brown, slowly building a foundation for the innings. However at 55 for 3 a big partnership was required and Rob Lankester (64) in tandem with Sean Tidey (44) obliged, taking the score to 140. With 5 overs left and Lankester starting to strike sixes, 180+ seemed possible, but three wickets in three balls turned the game back in Hoddie's favour. A run-a-ball cameo of 15 by Stuart Smith helped to take it to 166 for 8, a par score considering the slow wicket and wet outfield. In contrast to Reed's patience, Hoddesdon started aggressively and paid the price. Ed Wharton (2-24) and Toby Fynn (2-23) abetted by Smith's safe hands in the deep, left them in big trouble at 31-4, but this brought to the wicket Reed's arch nemesis, South African Jayden Broodryk who once again punished them to the tune of 68 runs. Initially, with keeper Will Steward (29), he defied the best efforts of spinners Tom Greaves and Kapil Dave until the latter sharply turned a ball through Steward's defence and finally had Broodryk snick one behind to Tidey. Greaves also chipped in with two wickets, but by then Hoddesdon only required 14 with 2 wickets left. They managed this with [...]

Superb Saxena strangles the Firsts’ run rate

Reed 1st XI made a much better fist of their game against Totteridge Millhillians than they did against Potters Bar. Despite the overcast conditions, Tom Greaves decided to bat and the openers struggled to score as Smith and Wray bowled an accurate line. Nevertheless, most of the top order made a reasonable start with Tom himself top scoring. Once again though, he perished for 34 soon after nailing his first maximum. Mention must be made too for Under 15s Max Sanderson, who looked very much at home batting against a fine attack until he was unluckily run out for 11. However, the star turn was Totteridge’s left arm spinner, Iresh Saxena, who produced a master class of consistency, producing figures of 10-7-4-2. It was left to Sean Tidey (20) to bring up a total of 133 just before the 46 overs, allotted after a rain break, were up. Totteridge looked to be strolling to victory at 70-1 despite another spell of tight bowling from Toby Fynn, but Mitchell Cooper (1-29) broke the partnership of Miles and Keeping and Rob Lankester rocked the visitors with two wickets in an over, finishing with 3-27, after an exciting spell causing the batsmen to play and miss repeatedly. However, even Ed Wharton couldn’t stop Totteridge’s crawl to victory, although he cleverly disposed of gun opener Ben Howgego caught by Greaves at silly mid on and bowled the dangerous Sam Smith just as he was starting to rack up the boundaries. His 9 overs contained 4 maidens and 2 wickets for a miserly 19 runs. In the end, Totteridge won by 3 wickets with a couple of overs to spare, leaving Reed smarting with only 5 points again to show [...]

It’s tough at the top

Reed 1st XI met their match at the home of last year's Herts Premier League champions. Electing to bat first in a match reduced to 40 overs per side, Potters Bar steadily accumulated runs with careful batting. Gale (24) and Hussain (35) built the platform for their innings while Sri Lankan, Wijesuriya (50) and South African, Machado (31) accelerated the scoring rate with J. Scott , Bannister and Chapman finishing in a flurry of boundaries. 216-8 was a formidable total on a wind swept afternoon. Reed's bowlers toiled manfully with Toby Fynn in particular containing the openers to finish with figures of 8-2-27-1. Ed Wharton (2-45) and Kapil Dave (1-46) also deserve mention for bowling at the death and could have had further reward should sharp chances have been taken. The batsmen, in contrast, struggled against their host's accurate varied attack. Only Rob Lankester's stylish 53 caught the eye as he struck 5 fours and 2 sixes with a range of aggressive strokeplay. However, the quest for the big shot down the ground accounted for three of Reed's top four so when Lankester finally holed out the innings subsided losing 6 wickets for 26 runs in a total of 117 in 30 overs. The team will have to fight hard for every point in the top division this season. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley. Note: Reed 1st XI scored 5 points from playing in this match. Meanwhile, both Reed 2nd XI and Reed 3rd XI started their campaigns with 10 points each as both games were cancelled because of the widespread rain!

Cooper has Flitwick over a barrel in Reed win

Reed faced Flitwick in a 45 over friendly on Saturday. Flitwick inserted the hosts after winning the toss. Max Sanderson fell early but Ed Wharton carried on from his slugfest of the previous week with a 24-ball 21. Skipper Tom Greaves (51) and vice-captain Rob Lankester (39) took the score to over a hundred. A brief cameo from Jack Caine (21) brought Mitch Cooper to the crease. He punished any loose deliveries. After Greaves' dismissal he carried on with the lower order before falling for a 58-ball 77. Reed ended on 268-7. Bedfordshire and Flitwick captain George Thurstance opened the visitors' reply and looked to dominate the Reed opening attack. The 50 came up off just 45 balls. Fellow opener Amin fell with the score on 61, after a quick 30-run partnership with his brother Harry. Thurstance fell for a 46-ball 60. With their skipper now gone Flitwick appeared to go into their shell. Skipper Greaves 9-2-28-2, Kapil 9-1-44-3 and 14-year-old Sam Osborne 9-0-48-2 all took wickets at regular intervals. Even late runs from Peters with 33 and an unbeaten 43 from Hassan wasn't enough and the Beds. side fell 37 runs short. Much report submitted by Neil Haslam.

Ed’s up for Reed in Ely victory!

Reed began their 2021 season with a home friendly against the City Of Ely CC. Winning the toss on a sunny but cool day at The Green, Ed Wharton and Will Heslam opened the batting with Wharton in particular taking a liking to the Ely bowling. The 50 came up of just 40 balls and Wharton's own fifty came up soon after, off just 36 balls. The offspin of Vincett removed Heslam for 14 and Wharton for a 46-ball 66. At 84 for 2, Ely were trying to get back into the game but a-run-a-ball 23 from skipper Tom Greaves kept the scoreboard ticking over but then his wicket and that of Rich Wharton at 127 for 4 had the game evenly poised. Rob Lankester was now playing the anchor role and when Marcus Martin fell for just 4, he and Jack Caine set about taking the score over 200. The 50 partnership came off 62 balls and Caine, now having overtaken Lankester, brought up his half-century off 45 balls. Lankester fell for a rugged 45 then Caine (55 not out) and Toby Fynn (7 not out) took Reed to 228 for 6 of their 40 overs. After the break, Ely began their reply, however, the Reed opening attack of Ed Wharton (4-1-18-2) and Toby Fynn (5-2-20-2) made an immediate impact with two wickets each, plus a sharp slip catch by Tom Greaves left Ely at 25 for 4. Aniskowicz began the Cambridgeshire side's recovery with a 30-ball 50; being particularly hard on newcomer Kapil. Kapil though managed to pull things back with two quick wickets and Matt Bowles (3-1-5-2) took Aniskowicz for 72 off just 54 balls. Ely could offer no more resistance and [...]

Reed nearly pull off a miraculous victory over Hoddesdon

It was a case of finger nails being bitten to the quick in this match at The Green on Saturday. Hoddesdon won the toss and put the home team into bat. Reed found runs hard to come by on a slow pitch. Ed Wharton was the first wicket to fall bowled in the 7th over with the score on 12. The accurate bowling of the visitors continued to dry up the Reed scoring but any further wickets had to wait to the 17th over when Will Heslam fell with the score on 42. Wickets then fell regularly for the hosts and with James Heslam's dismissal, Reed were 81 for 5 with just over 12 overs left. Enter Mitchell Cooper who took an immediate liking to the Hoddesdon spinners, he hit 54 in 50 balls with 4 fours and four sixes in a 63-run partnership with Rich Wharton which brought a measure of respectability to Reed’s final score of 151 for 7 off their 45 overs. Hoddesdon set off quickly in their reply reaching 59 for 1 in their first ten overs. Toby Fynn (9-0-44-1) taking the wicket of Hoddesdon skipper Walters. A partnership of 54 between Broodryk and Clarke was eventually broken by Karl Ward (9-1-33-3), and within four overs the match had been changed as the visitors fell to 88 for 5. Skipper Tom Greaves (9-1-32-4) extracted turn and bounce on the now drying pitch. The collapse continued and Hoddesdon had fallen to 128 for 9. Reed sensed a marvellous victory. It was the visitors now finding runs hard to come by. Sean Tidey (6-0-9-0) passing the edge of the bat on numerous occasions. The pressure was palpable. Eventually after fifteen overs of knife [...]

Rescue act in Radlett in vain

Reed travelled to Radlett for their latest match in the Premier Division of the Saracens Herts. League. Losing the toss on a day that looked more like one from March than late-August, Reed were asked to take first knock. The raw pace of Sanghera plus the left arm over of 15 year old Noah Cornwell kept runs at a premium in the early overs. Ed Wharton was the first to fall caught at deep mid-on for just 8. Will Heslam, Reed’s hero last week was struck on the helmet by a Sanghera bouncer and fell soon after for 4. Wickets fell regularly and Reed were teetering at 43 for 6 in just the 14th Over. Mitchell Cooper and Sean Tidey set about rebuilding the innings. They punished anything loose and short and pushed the score over 100, with the first batting point in sight, Tidey was stumped off the bowling of Josh De Caires, the son of former England Captain Michael Atherton, for 28. Cooper continued on, striking 6 fours and 3 sixes before edging behind for 48 off 61 balls. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn added 15 for the last wicket as Reed were dismissed for 145 in the 37th Over. A more than respectable recovery from the position they were in earlier! With Jack Tidey unable to bowl, Reed opened their attack with Ed Wharton (9-2-29-2) and Toby Fynn. Wharton soon struck taking the edge of Chatfield’s bat for a great catch behind by Sean Tidey with the score on 11. Wharton’s good lines and bounce soon snaffled a second wicket, De Caires for 21, and at 34-2, Reed were back in the match. Crawford and Arul responded to the Reed bowlers and [...]

Heslam serves up a tasty main course against Welwyn Garden City

Reed nearly pulled off the result of the season as they fell just seven runs short against Welwyn Garden City. Winning the toss, Reed inserted their hosts on a blustery day and were soon rewarded when Jack Tidey trapped former England International Owais Shah for just 4 with the score on 5. However, Tidey limped off injured after bowling just 4.3 overs. Welwyn Garden set about rebuilding with Champion and Nijar, they had completed their 50-run partnership, when Matt Giblin (8-0-38-1) took the edge of Champion’s bat for Sean Tidey to take the catch behind the stumps. Nijar soon followed as Will Heslam pouched a catch off skipper Tom Greaves (8-0-53-2). Welwyn Garden skipper Blacktopp and Rizvi built a solid partnership taking the score over 100, before Toby Fynn picked up two quick wickets (127 for 5). Rizvi shared partnerships with Nolan and Shay Emerton, Fynn picking up his 3rd wicket (9-1-29-3) with Nolan’s dismissal. Rob Lankester was instrumental in bringing Welwyn Garden’s innings to a close taking 3 for 13 in just 3 overs with his medium pace, including the prize wicket of Rizvi for 61. Sean Tidey had a good day returning behind the stumps with two catches and a stumping. Welwyn Garden were all out for 227 off exactly 45 overs. Reed’s opening pair of Ed Wharton and Will Heslam set off at a reasonable pace in reply. They punished any bad bowling and cleared the boundary on several occasions particularly Wharton with 2 fours and 2 sixes in his 29 before he fell with the score on 48. Wickets then began to fall regularly and at 88 for 4 Reed were wobbling. Will Heslam still remained patiently accumulating runs. A solid [...]
