Maiden ton for Kieran Willoughby in exciting draw!

Once more, Reed’s skipper, Peter Baker, loss the toss and after some lengthy deliberation by his counterpart, Andy Page, Reed were invited to bat first. With 47 overs at their disposal, this was approached with confidence, but there was a setback when the potentially sound Rhodri Hughes somehow managed to inside edge a delivery from young Ben Guest into his wicket. Kieran Willoughby was the number 3 and then added 78 with Baker for the second wicket. Runs were not easy to score on a pitch of very low bounce where each straight delivery had to be negotiated as if it was a wicket-taking ball. Baker departed for a sedate 37 to the first delivery he faced from the off-spin of Charlotte Page. Sam Rice, who has been batting with confidence in recent matches thus deserving promotion up the order, came to the wicket to join Willoughby. Their partnership for the third wicket produced 93 runs of which Rice contributed 35 which was his highest score in this format of cricket match. By this time, Willoughby was closing-in to his own personal milestone of a century. His season had started with a series of ducks interrupted by his maiden fifty only a month ago. This time, with the very helpful support of Ben Moody, 8 not out, Willoughby reached his first ever “ton” and when the Reed innings closed on 209 for 3, he had scored a gritty and deserved 100 not out which included 17 fours. A great effort. Hitchin’s side contained some talented young batsmen, but it was important for their main player to remain at the crease. Elliott Austin scored 20 and was the first wicket to fall, but fellow opener, Peter [...]

President’s Day Has Been Cancelled Due to Davidstow National Village Cup Replay

Dear All, PRESIDENT’S DAY 2014. As many of you are now aware, I have had to cancel the above together with the Charity Lunch, following the tremendous storm that hit Reed last Sunday during our quarter-final NVC match against Dinton CC. Under NVC rules the match has to be replayed, in it’s entirety, at Dinton’s ground this Sunday, which meant that the President’s Day arrangements became unviable, in that many of the players and their relations/supporters will be at Dinton. I am very sorry that I have had to take this action, but I hope you understand that realistically, I had no other option. Whether it can be resurrected towards the end of the season is something I am exploring, as many players have expressed a desire to still, somehow, have the day, but hopefully, there is still a huge amount of fixtures to be accommodated, even without President’s Day! I look forward to meeting with many of you at Dinton CC on Sunday to witness Reed finishing the job they started last Sunday! Yours sincerely, Andrew Emms-President.

Fitzgerald makes superb 81

The make-up of the personnel in both teams was very similar. A few veterans intermingled with young, upcoming colts experiencing their first forays into the longer formats of the game. Respective skippers of the home side, Wheathampstead’s Andy Alexander, and visitors, Reed’s Peter Baker, ensured all their players were involved and given opportunities to contribute. On a wet pitch after morning drizzle, Baker won the toss and decided to bat first as he opened with the returning Reece Fitzgerald. The pacey left-armer, George Jarvis, nipped-out Baker for 10 when the partnership had reached 23, the first of his four wickets, soon followed by his second the very next ball. Reed’s third wicket went two overs later and their fourth 4 balls after that leaving them floundering at 44 for 4. At last, Fitzgerald found a partner who stuck with him as he and Lloyd Bowman almost doubled the score. The young opener passed his personal half-century out of Reed’s 77 then when the score had reached 87, Bowman was bowled for an entertaining 18. Three more batsmen fell for “ducks” immediately after that then Fitzgerald farmed the strike whilst batting with Chris West. Sensible shot selection brought the total up to 122 when Fitzgerald was the ninth batsman out when he finally fell for an absolutely masterful 81 containing eleven classy 4s and two 6s. Joe Graves and West battled-on for a short while boosting Reed’s score to 135 all-out which at least provided a total that could be defended if things went well. With 65 overs in which to knock-off the required runs, Wheathampstead’s openers set-off sedately, but once Graves and Zac Conley set the tone with accurate bowling, Wheathampstead went on the slide [...]
