Cricket Helmets

Reed Cricket Club recommends the wearing of Helmets when batting in all recreational cricket irrespective of age. Refer to: www.ecb.co.uk/helmets ================================================================================================================ ECB Guidance Note: Safety Measures for Helmets within Recreational Cricket. The ECB has recently announced new helmet safety measures, which are being introduced with a view to reducing the risk of head and facial injuries within the game. The purpose of this brief note is to assist Leagues and Clubs at the recreational level to understand the key elements of these changes and what they mean. Players over the age of 18. The ECB strongly recommends that all adult recreational cricketers should wear helmets for certain activities, preferably which meet the most recent British Safety Standard (see below). This recommendation applies to batting against all types of bowling, wicket-keepers standing up to the wicket (who may as an alternative wear face protectors) and fielders fielding closer than eight yards from the batter’s middle stump, except behind the wicket on the off side. Under 18s. The position in relation to U18s currently remains unchanged, and is governed by the ‘ECB Guidance on the Wearing of Cricket Helmets by Young Players’ (www.ecb.co.uk/youngplayershelmetguidance). In essence, batters and wicket-keepers standing up to the stumps must wear head protection when playing or practising. That Guidance should be referred to in full for the position in relation to U18s. British Safety Standard. The latest British Safety Standard is BS7928:2013 (for both adults and juniors). The full list of helmets meeting this standard is available at www.ecb.co.uk/helmets. For wicket-keeping face protectors the relevant British Safety Standard is BS7929-2:2009 (again, for both adults and juniors). The ECB understands that there is currently no specific women’s helmet and as a consequence no specific [...]

REED CC – RETURN TO CRICKET PROTOCOLS

Now that the ECB and the UK Government has given the green light for recreational cricket in England to return from this Saturday 11 July, the Reed CC General Committee and Playing Sub-Committee have begun discussions on the measures we need to take to get cricket back on ‘The Green’. We are working very hard to ensure that the club is a safe environment for all those players, officials and loyal supporters to enjoy for the remainder of the 2020 season. The length of the pandemic and the uncertainty about when things will go back to ‘normal’ makes it absolutely vital that we as a club, and a cricket community, give these new safety measures the utmost respect so that we do not lose any more cricket. So please, start as you mean to go on and adhere to the following rules when playing cricket or using the clubhouse. If it becomes evident that these rules are being broken, we will have no choice but to cancel games and close the clubhouse. Please remember that social distancing and hand hygiene are of the utmost importance and that at the end of the day we are just trying to keep everyone safe. PRE-GAME 1. If you, or anyone in your household, are showing any symptoms of COVID-19 - YOU MUST NOT turn up for the match. Let your captain know. We will be carrying out checks prior to each game to ensure safety of all players and officials. 2. Please come all ready dressed in your kit no earlier than 1 hour before the start time. 3. All Reed players and supporters should park on the football pitch. 4. The car park behind the clubhouse is [...]

Special Rule changes for the 2020 Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League

The Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League, (SHPCL), has published changes to their Constitution and special Match Rules regarding the delayed start of the competitive league season with effect from next Saturday, 18th July. These changes are relevant to all participants in matches, (players, umpires, scorers), plus Club officials, spectators and supporters. These are accessible at www.hertsleague.co.uk The ECB emphasised that cricket is in the privileged position of being allowed to begin playing matches when other sports are still prohibited. It is not a right and we cricketers must not abuse the privilege - I am therefore requesting you to read, understand and comply to the rules. Hopefully that way, we will all be able to enjoy the remainder of the season. Thank you and all the best for a fruitful season. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.

The Return of Recreational Cricket in 2020 – Full Guidance

Please see the emailed Bulletin below sent by the ECB in the evening of 8th July. I preface it with this message from the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League (SHPCL). "It is important to emphasise that cricket is the first recreational team game that the government has allowed to start during the current pandemic and we are therefore in a privileged position. The guidelines which are extensive and detailed must be stringently followed by all league clubs. We need to set an example and show the ECB, the Government and the wider public that with care and adherence to the new rules we can run a successful and competitive cricket league. Please, therefore read the attachments thoroughly and make sure that your club and all your membership is familiar with how the game will be run, how clubs can be adapted to comply with the requirements handed down by the ECB and what measures are necessary to keep your own members and visitors safe." The RCC General Committee met (virtually) on Monday and as a consequence smaller Sub-Committees were set-up to deal with our Return to Cricket. Their broad remit is to look at Playing, Availability & Ground and Clubhouse & Bar. There will be further correspondence later today, (Thursday), or on Friday, (and possibly more after that), once we have received specific changes to League & Match Rules. The SHPCL is working towards beginning the fixture programme on Saturday 18th July. Please read-on. The ECB's message is below. PGB, Honorary Secretary,Reed Cricket Club. ======================================================================================================== Following the latest update from the UK Government, the ECB is pleased to announce the return of recreational cricket in England, signalling a progression from Step 3 to Step 4 of [...]

ECB announcement: The Return of Recreational Cricket

Please see the attached announcement from the ECB. Whilst this is good news, please don’t think that everything will be back to normal straight away. We won’t be able to just shake out the whites and turn-up next Saturday and start playing fixtures. There will be an awful lot of logistics to be worked-out and we await more detailed instructions from the ECB, the Herts League, the County Board and the Village Cup organisers how exactly Clubs will begin to host opponents as well as deciding the type of match format, (e.g., come ready changed, how to provide teas / refreshments, the use / handling of cricket balls, 50/50 overs or other, panel umpires - many of whom are over the age of 60 and still on the risk list). In a survey earlier in the spring, some clubs had indicated that they would not even fulfil matches this year - we don’t know whether they have changed their stance since, so I repeat that the Fixture List for the remainder of the 2020 season has still to be confirmed. There is much to be discussed and decided. When I have more definite news I shall let you know. Please continue to stay safe and keep well. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club. ======================================================================================================= Dear all, We are delighted that the UK Government has given the green light for recreational cricket in England* to return from Saturday July 11. The latest update from the UK Government signals progression from Step 3 to Step 4 of ECB’s roadmap to return for the recreational game, meaning competitive cricket matches in England with adjustments to respect hygiene and social distancing would be permitted. ECB has [...]

“GOING AHEAD” or “CANCELLED”

In March, at the moment that all cricket events were to be suspended indefinitely because of Coronavirus, I posted that the amount of fixtures was too numerous for me to indicate them individually as "Postponed" or "Cancelled". Now that there has been a relaxation of some of the imposed restrictions and there is likely to be further guidance during the next few weeks, I want to repeat that the matches and events shown in the Calendar on the right of this homepage are all still to be considered as not happening unless otherwise indicated. Once the Government advise the ECB, and the ECB liaise with County Boards, then Clubs agree to some sort of match programme, and we are given a definite date to begin the 2020 season, I shall update each of the remaining fixtures, practices and club events as "GOING AHEAD" or "CANCELLED". I repeat that no date for the resumption of recreational cricket has been given as yet. How, when, and in what format, matches are to be conducted remains to be seen. Please continue to follow the guidelines, stay safe and take care. PGB Peter G Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed CC 24th June 2020

Brian Bevan 1945 to 2020, RIP

The sad news has reached me today that former Reed cricketer, Brian Bevan, died this morning at his home in Spain. Brian was 74 and is survived by his wife, Caroline, to whom we send our condolences. Brian was a most prolific batsman, (and handy bowler), who played for Reed during the 1980s and early-90s scoring literally thousands of runs, sometimes more than 2,000 in any one season. Brian had been ill for sometime but I understand that his death was not Corona-related. To my knowledge, Brian represented several local clubs including Cottered (where he lived), Aspenden and Johnson Matthey before joining Reed. Caroline’s brother-in-law, Richard Apperley, (also a former RCC player and now a qualified Umpire), reckoned that Brian would have played 7 matches a week if he had had the chance! But then he simply stopped playing cricket virtually overnight and took up golf instead. I am sure you will join me in sending our sympathies to Caroline, Dawn and Richard on the passing of a real Reed Legend. If you did not know him personally, I am certain you would have heard “Robbo” regale us with the stories of Brian’s batting exploits! PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.

Roadmap for the Return of Recreational Cricket (Step 3), 11th June 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE ECB, 11th JUNE 2020. ============================================================================================= We [ECB] have identified five steps for the recreational game’s proposed phased return in England this summer. England is currently in step 3 – which allows for small group training sessions of up to six people while respecting social distancing.* The Welsh government is due to review current restrictions on 18 June, after which time we will provide further guidance. As cricket is a non-contact sport that involves individual disciplines within a team environment, forms of the game can be played while respecting social distancing. We will continue to be led by UK government advice and will only move into step 4 when the guidance allows and when it is medically safe to do so. ============================================================================================= YOU CAN READ THE LATEST ON THE ECB's WEBSITE, www.ecb.co.uk ============================================================================================= Whilst there, check out some of the cricket / ball skills you can practice at home. There is a free App that you can download aimed at youngsters (search for "Dynamos Cricket App"), but perhaps older players might benefit as well! There are also some film clips accessible on YouTube that I have seen - perhaps you have already discovered them too. * Please wait for further news how Reed CC will shortly implement plans for Small Group Training Sessions. All the best, PGB, Hon. Secretary, Reed CC.
