Northwood Town

Reed put up their best league display of the session so far against Northwood Town. Reed won the toss and decided to bat even though it looked like the pitch would help the bowlers early on. Openers Baz Curtis and Mark Peart put on 51 for the first wicket before Curtis was dismissed for 31. Peart went 14 runs later when he had scored 26. Trevor Saunders and Chris Jackson then put on 73. Saunders never one to hang around smashed a quick 41. Jackson was by now accumulating his runs all around the wicket and the visitors head began to drop. Simon Roberts helped in a stand of 50 before he went for 30. Reed's aim was to get 200 and maximum batting points. Jackson and new partner Robert Dunn saw the home side safely past this mark and beyond. In the end Reed were 221-4 with Jackson 73 not out, his highest league score of the season. Dunn was left on 12. Northwood Town decided to send in Baker to try and smash a good start, but this backfired when he was bowled by Andrew Emms. He also accounted for Piper a few overs later. Reed managed to keep the pressure on the batting side making them fight for every run. Northwood Town were still in the hunt until a golden spell of bowling by Trevor Saunders. He ripped through Northwood Town's middle order, taking 4-23 in 9 overs. He was helped by 3 catch by Curtis and a superb diving catch by new boy William Clarke. Emms came back for a late burst and picked up his third victim. Peter Tidey took the 9th wicket, any other catch by Clarke, but Reed [...]

Northampton Exiles

Reed shocked promotion hopefuls Northampton Exiles with a stunning display with bat and ball in this Herts League Division 2 fixture. Baz Curtis took full advantage of being dropped on nought. He took a shine to the opening bowling of Robertson hitting him for 32 from his 4 overs. Senior was hard to score off at the other end and had ripped through Reed's top order, taking 4 wicket. Runs were coming freely at the other end and Reed had 100 on the board in just 20 overs. Curtis was joined by Simon Jackson and they put on 80 for the 6th wicket. A mixture of some good running and positive batting put Reed on the brink of maximum batting point when Curtis was out for 117 with the score on 194. He smashed 15, 4s and 5, 6s in that 117 and when he reached 101 he passed 1000 runs for the season. Jackson and Robert Dunn continued to push Reed into the 200s. Exiles needing to win to keep their promotion hopes alive couldn't understand where Reed, needing the points for totally opposite reasons had found this form. Jackson was dismissed for 34. Peter Costen came in and in his own unique way smashed 20 in no time. Dunn went for 27, but by then Reed had passed 250. In the end they set Exiles 256 to win. Exiles looked up for the challenge as the hit some early loose bowling, but Richard Robertson and Andrew Emms got back on line and the batsmen had to start to fight for runs. Robertson made the vital early break through. Andrew Emms then got into the act picking up 2 wickets. Emms was replaced by [...]

Langford

After being put into the field Reed were very lack lustre in the field. Their was a real end of season feel to this performance. Simon Roberts bowled tightly at the beginning conceding just 17 runs from 5 overs. he was well supported by the senior duo of Ian Roberts and Clive Collins. Both gave little away, in fact less the 30 a piece in 8 overs. Reed pegged back Langford after they got a good start. Kirkham was the real thorn in Reed's side. he scored 67 and we the third man out with the score on 103. Reed quickly made that 4 wickets just 5 runs later. It was then that Simpson took a shine to the spin of Mark Peart taking 18 from one over. Peart responded well by taking Simpson's wicket plus 2 more. In the end Langford posted a challenging 178 to win. Unfortunately Reed lost both openers before 30 runs were on the board. They never really recovered from this. Simon Jackson looked in good form yet again, but was well caught when he had score 18. James Heslam also scored 18 when looking good. Stuart McDonald making his Reed debut scored 19 and fell into the trap of getting out when well set. Although at this point Reed did runs quickly. Michael Davenport was also making his debut and he made a big impact. He smashed a quick 50 and gave Reed a glimmer of hope, but Reed never got ahead of the run rate and in the end were 10 runs light.

Ickleford

Reed won the toss and decided to bat on what looked like a good batting track. The Reed openers of Baz Curtis and Paul Watts built a good foundation having 47 on the board before Watts was bowled for 6. Curtis was then joined by Mark Peart. They put on a further 48 before a bad piece of calling meant Peart was run out for 11, with the score on 95. That quickly became 100-3. Reed had to be careful not to let Ickleford back into the game as the toiled in the field. James Bradford came to the wicket and helped put on Reed first century stand of the season. He made an good 36 before being well caught in the deep as Reed pushed on for a declaration. Curtis was now in full flow. He had already reached his first league ton of the campaign. He had been dropped twice early on, but was taking full advantage of his luck. He was finally dismissed for 150 in the 46th over. His 150 contained 19, 4s and 3, 6s. A brisk 17 by Simon Roberts pushed Reed towards 250 and it was left to Simon Jackson and Trevor Saunders to make sure Reed got there. Reed declared 2 overs early on 252 for 6. Reed made two early break throughs having Ickleford 12-2. Both wickets were taken by Simon Roberts. Ickleford then put on 68 for the 3rd wicket before the oldest swinger in town Ian Roberts broke the stand. Chris Jackson got rid of Ickleford's last chance of a win when he bowled Hare for a quick 24. This was his second wicket after a superb over the head catch by Tidey got [...]

Wormley

Reed made an excellent come back against 1st division Wormley. Despite welcoming back Andrew Emms to the opening attack, Wormley made an excellent start. They put on 106 for the first wicket before Robert Dunn made the break through. The introduction of Dunn and Duncan Price slowed the run rate and wicket began to fall. Wormley tumbled from 109-1 in the 27th over to 169-8 in the 47th. Both Dunn and Price picked up 4 wickets a piece conceding 43 and 29 runs respectively. In reply Reed lost the early wicket of Henry Tufton when he slipped and was run out. Reed were 28-1. Reed's reply was built around 62 from Mark Peart. Chris Haywood put on 36 with Peart before Haywood was out for 19. Only skipper Simon Roberts got into double figures after that. He made a patient 25, but when he went Reed's chances of victory were dashed. It was left to Robert Dunn and Louis Gearing to see Reed to the draw.

Steeple Morden (a)

Steeple Morden again proved to be Red's bogey side. Reed were put into bat and were quickly 8-3 with both openers out without scoring. Graham Hazard smashed a quick 22 before becoming Osbourne's third victim, but the visitor were still reeling at 44-5. Ian Fulk and Simon Roberts added 28 for the 6th wicket, but Fulk was removed for 13 and Reed were in deep trouble at 72-6. Roberts was the 8th man out for 24 when the score had reached 111. This was the cue for Duncan Price to smash 4, fours before being stumped for 16 off Terry Mack. Mack took 3-50. Peter Costen didn't give up the fight and he hit 4, fours and 2, sixes to help Reed to 141 all out. Steeple Morden made a solid start with Armitage and Jarman putting on 58 for the first wicket. Divers managed to removed Armitage for 40. He again struck 5 runs later bowling Jarman for 14. Steeple managed to get to within 33 runs of victory before an England type collapse occurred. Peter Costen turned to some flight and gail. He removed both Holt and Dix with the score on 109, and the removed danger man Gary Mack with a beauty for 43. Suddenly at 118-6 it was game on again. Osbourne came in a smashed Costen for 10 before Costen got his revenge and bowled him to claim his fifth victim. Peter Tidey arrived and showed no pity on his Saturday team mates hitting a quick 7, but was run out with just 2 runs needed. Reed battled to the death, but in the end Dix hit a boundary to secure a 2 wicket win for the home side.

Steeple Morden

Steeple Morden won the toss and put the home side into bat. Reed's openers had to face team mate Peter Tidey who was playing for Steeple Morden. Reed made a steady putting on 26 in 8 overs before Baz Curtis was bowled by Tidey for 23. Simon Jackson made 12 before he also succumbed to the inswing of Tidey. From 35-2, Reed suddenly found themselves 41-4 and in need of a big stand. It duly arrived in the shape of Graham Hazard and Simon Roberts. they put on 72 for the 5th wicket before Hazard was bowled for 30. Roberts continues on his way to his first fifty of the season. After Hazard was out he was joined by Duncan Price. They then added 78 for the 5th wicket. When the declaration came Roberts was left 76 not out and Price 34 not out. Roberts's innings included 8, 4s and 3, 6s. The very dependable Ian Roberts got Reed an early break through when Steeple had just eight on the board, but Reed were going to have to wait another 114 runs before they got another one. Lawrence was dropped in the slips off Price and went on to make 57 before being bowled by Phil Divers. Steeple looked to have victory in the bag at 122-2 and Jarman still going strong. The introduction of Divers and Simon Roberts slowed the run rate and when Steeple suddenly were 128-4 things looked interesting. Divers and Roberts kept it tight, but Steeple always had wickets and overs in hand. In the end Bailey stayed with Jarman for a cool 25 not out and Jarman was 91 not out. Steeple Morden won by 6 wickets with 13 balls [...]

Southgate Adelaide

Reed recovered from a disastrous start to set Southgate Adelaide a challenging total of 221-7. It was Reed's best all round batting performance on the season. All the batsmen were focus on the main aim of getting maximum batting points. Mark Peart and Chris Jackson put on 83 for the second wicket before Jackson was LBW for 27. Peart went on to score his second league fifty. He was the 4th wicket to fall with the score on 112. That quickly became 124-5, but Simon Roberts and Trevor Saunders put on a swift 76 for the 6th wicket. Saunders was his normal free scoring self. He hit 11, 4s and 1, 6 in his 63. Unfortunately he was dismissed at a vital time. This stopped Reed pushing on to a bigger score. Roberts was left 43 not out at the end. Reed put the visitors under pressure early on and they only had 60 in the first 20 overs, but they had only lost one wicket. Richard Robertson bowled a fine spell, taking 2-42 from his 14 overs. He was well supported by Andrew Emms who took 1-61. All the bowlers chipped in. Reed looked to be in the game when Southgate Adelaide were 7 down and still need 40 to win. The run rate got up to 7 an over, but the visitors kept their heads. A couple of misfields cost Reed dear and at the end Southgate Adelaide got home with 3 wickets and 1 over to spare.

Preston_League

Reed won the toss and decided to bat against old rivals Preston. Reed made a steady, but lost wickets regularly. Curtis made 26 and Peart 20, but the main impetuous came from Simon Roberts with a fine 34, before he was unlucky to be given out for LBW by umpire Cittcat. Reed were 115-6 at the point and some rebuilding was required. It came in the form of Trevor Saunders. He was last man out in the final over for a splendid 49. Reed post Preston 180 to win. Reed were handicapped by fielding with only 10 men. Wicketkeeper Chris Bovington pulled a groin muscle while batting and was unable to take the field. Reed's fielders backed up the bowlers well, but the extra man would have been vital. Ian Roberts pulled a superb spell of swing bowling, taking 4-47 in 13 overs. Peter Tidey was economical as usual, but Reed really needed early wickets. Reed had Preston 115-5 when Richard Robertson had Hucler well caught by Saunders, but after that the Preston batsmen pushed the ball around for a comfortable 5 wicket win with 4 overs to go.
