Preston Friendly

Preston won the toss and decided to bat against old foes, Reed. It turned out to be a big mistake. They came across Simon Roberts and Peter Costen in rampant form. Roberts removed both openers before they had reach double figures and then Costen took over and ripped through the Preston middle order. Roberts took 2-26 from 11 overs and Costen 5-39 in 18. Preston were 54-7 before Burleigh came in a hit a stubborn 29. Phil Divers replaced Roberts and picked up 2 vital wickets including Cole for 25. He was superbly caught by Richard Tufton. Preston were 82-9, but Reed just couldn't get that last wicket. In the end it took a run out, but not before Burleigh and Moore had put on 47 for the 10th wicket. Reed were set an easy looking 130 to win. It looked even easier when Baz Curtis smashed 31 from just 4 overs, but he went with the score on 36. Reed suddenly found themselves 59-4, but Graham Hazard and Simon Roberts steadied the Reed nerves. Hazard hit 23 the only way he knows how and Roberts and confident 29. Both went with victory in sight. It was left to Richard Robertson with 14 not out and bowling hero Costen, with 10 not out to see Reed to a 4 wicket win.

Parkfield

This was a vital game for both teams. Both are in a relegation dog fight at the base of Herts Division 2. Parkfield won the toss and decided to bat. A good decision in the hot conditions. Reed's bowlers toiled away, but with no success. Ian Roberts particularly unlucky not to find a way through, but as things went against Reed the ground fielding worsened with some catches going to ground. The home side had 160 on the board before Simon Roberts made the break through. Andrew Emms came back and removed Ovesley for 114 with the score on 213. The home side declared 9 runs later and giving Reed an extra 4 overs to get 223. Reed were quickly 28-2, but importantly Mark Peart looked in good nick. Reed fell foul of some awful LBW decisions, but battled on and had reached 100-5 and were well up with the run rate. A home victory looked on the cards when Peart, who hadn't given a chance, was run out on 49. The score was 124-6, but that soon became 124-7 and a victory looked out of the question for Reed. Simon Roberts and Andrew Emms had other ideas. They both started cautiously, but upped the tempo and put on 64 for the 8th wicket. Emms was bowled for a spirited 25. Just 5 runs later Roberts was removed, again LBW, for 34 and it was now left to Ian Roberts and Steve Dunn to see Reed to the draw. They saw out the last 6 overs with no alarms and the game ended a draw.

Old Owens

Reed continued their good league form and too full advantage of the humid conditions. The visitors rolled back the years with Richard Robertson and Peter Tidey opening the Reed attack. Both got the ball to swing, but it was Tidey who got the early wickets. He removed the first 3 Old Owens batsmen and they only had 33 on the board. A fine piece of fielding by Peter Costen with a precision throw into the wicket keepers gloves made it 33-4. Richard Robertson who, up until then had bowled superbly with out luck then picked up the next 3 wickets. Reed's fielders supported the two bowlers well and Old Owens were finding the going tough and runs hard to come by. It was just a question of who would get 5 wickets. In the end it was Tidey. He bowled Larkins for a duck and Owens were all out for 75 in a 48 overs. Robertson finished with figures of 4-43 in 24 overs and Tidey 5-24 in 24 overs. It was important Reed didn't lose an early wicket and give some momentum back to the home side. Baz Curtis and Paul Watts made sure that didn't happen. They put on a solid 41 before Curtis was caught of 23. Trevor Saunders came in a smashed a quick 20 to put the game well beyond Old Owens. Paul Watts with an unbeaten 16 and Simon Roberts, 4 saw Reed home to an impressive 8 wicket win and 30 points.

Old Haberdashers

Old Haberdashers won the toss and decided to field against Reed in last Saturday's league game. Reed made a positive start as James Bradford and Mark Peart put on 54 for the first wicket. Bradford was the first to go when he had scored 29. He was just getting in to gear with some crushing blows. Trevor Saunders joined Peart and continued why Bradford at finished. He had reached a swift 24 including a huge six, when he miss timed a drive and was caught a mid on. Peart had made a classy 33 when he was also caught. Reed were then 110-3 and looked set for a good score. Unfortunately it was then that the wheels fell off. Reed lost their last 7 wickets for just 41 runs. They set Old Haberdashers just 152 to win. Reed made a great start in the field when Andrew Emms, on his return to the Reed league team removed Davies for just 6. The Reed bowlers managed to keep the visitors under the cosh and when they were 38-3 it looked like Reed might be able to force a victory. Peter Tidey bowled 20 overs for just 49 runs picking up one wicket. Emms finished with 2-30 from 11 overs. Roberts, Robertson, Peart and Simon Roberts all tried to get another break through, but Phipps and Foley put on 114 for the 4th wicket and saw Old Haberdashers to a 7 wicket victory.

Old Albanians

Reed playing their first game of the season decided to bat in this opening Herts League Division 2 fixture. It looked a good decision when Simon Roberts bowled Rourke for a duck with just 9 on the board. Reed kept Old Albanian under pressure and the run rate never reached 4 an over. Peter Costen was the star of the Reed attack, taking 3-58 in 18 overs. He was well supported by Peter Tidey, 1-57 and Richard Robertson 1-44. Reed dropped a couple of catches at vital times that meant Old Albanians could push on near the death with wickets in hand. After 53 overs Old Albanians posted Reed 186 to win. Reed were never really in the hunt once they were 13-3 and then 47-7. Only Jason Nolan and Simon Jackson with 10 and 14 respectively reached double figures. Reed were 69-9 when Chris Bovington was joined by Peter Tidey. They put on 44 for the last wicket before Tidey was caught for a defiant 20. This left Bovington 27 not out and Reed 72 runs short of their target. Reed picked up just 2 points.

Hockley

Richard Johnson will never forget his first team debut for Reed. The u15's opening bowler took full advantage of the conditions. He swung the ball from ball one and the Hockley batsmen had no answer to it. He took first first wicket in his second over, but with the last 3 balls of the same over completed a hat trick. The visitor were 9-4. He then continued to mystify the rest of the batsmen who could score off him either. He had the first 7 wickets before William Clarke spoilt the 10 wicket dream. Johnson wasn't going to let anyone else into his party and removed the last 2 Hockley wickets. The visitors were 73 all out in just 20.2 overs. Johnson's returned the amazing figures of 10.2 overs, 2 maidens, 9 for 18, 6 of which were bowled!!!! Reed sent in fellow under 15 star James Heslam and in the circumstances senior (at 18) Ian Fulk. They put on 68 for the first wicket before Heslam went of a typical stylish 24. Despite the loss of another wicket Fulk saw the home side to a comprehensive 8 wicket win.

Headstone St. Georges

Headstone St. Georges won the toss and decided to bat first on a slow wicket. Reed opening attack of Simon Roberts and Duncan Price made the visitors fight for every run. They had reached just 43-1 from 23 overs. Roberts had removed White for 8. Price finally got his reward and this made Headstone St. Georges 42-2. Price had figures of 1-26 from 14 overs, while Roberts had 1-20 from 12 overs. Neil Haslam and Phil Divers were also run misers when they bowled. Backed up by some good ground fielding the batsmen were finding it hard to score at a decent rate. Only Fowler had an answers with a patient 74. Divers took 3-53 from 14 overs while Mark Peart came on at the death to bowl 6 overs 2 for 18. Reed bowled 57 overs at the visitors and they posted a very modest 155-8. Reed's batsmen decided the only way to bat on the slow wicket was to be aggressive. Baz Curtis took a liking to Fine's fist 4 overs smashing him for 33. Although he was unfortunate to have the Reed opener dropped off an absolute sitter before he really got going. Curtis took full advantage reaching his 50 in just 9 overs and went on to make 74. He hit 12, 4s and 1, 6. When Curtis went with the score on 82 in just the 14th over the run rate slowed, but Stuart Smith and Graham Hazard became more positive and soon the runs were flowing again. Smith hit his highest first team score of 32 and Hazard smashed a typically aggressive 38. It was a shame they both got out with victory in site. It was left to [...]

Hatfield Hyde

Reed were put into bat and lost a wicket first ball when Curtis was bowled. It never really got much better for the rest of the afternoon. Only Paul Watts with a stubborn 42, James Bradford with 20 and Peter Costen with 29 reached double figures. Reed were 52-4 and in trouble, but it got worse when they were 56-7. Costen with some aggressive hitting put on 24 with Watts before Watts went for his highest score for Reed so far. He had scored 42 out of Reed's 90. Reed lost their last 3 wickets for just 17 and were 107 all out. Peter Tidey gave Hatfield Hyde a scare when he had Miltar caught behind for a duck. Robert Dunn then took 2 wickets in the space of 4 runs and Hatfield Hyde were 39-3, but that was the last wickets Reed were to get and they ended up losing by 7 wickets.

Reed decided ot bat against local rivals Guilden Morden, but it looked to have backed fired when 3 of the top four were back in the pavilion thanks to Matthew Scott. Mark Peart then joined Simon Roberts and they started to put Reed in control. They put on a club fourth wicket record of 177 before Simon Roberts retired on a seasons best, 104. Eversholt

Eversholt put Reed into bat and it looked a good decision when they had the home side 4-2. This soon became 35-3, but James Bradford and Trevor Saunders started to rebuild. They put on 77 for the 4th wicket before Trevor Saunders was LBW for a fine 44. Red again looked in trouble at 120-5 in the 33rd over, but while Bradford was still their a decent total was on the cards. He was joined by first Simon Jackson who looked in great nick for his 14, and then Graham Hazard who hit a hard hitting 21. Bradford was finally dismissed with the score on 212. He hit 14 4s, and 1 huge six in his 108. It was his maiden ton for the club and came at a vital time. He was the 7th man out with 212 on the board. Reed posted the visitors a challenging total of 224 to win. Ian Roberts again bowled a superb opening spell. He got a vital wicket in his first over when Eversholt had just 2 on the board. Roberts went for 40 in 11 overs and also picked up a second wicket. Reed welcomed back Richard Robertson to the opening attack and he bowled Hall for 18 just as he was beginning to look dangerous. Eversholt looked to be pacing themselves well, needing 120 in 20 overs and with a quick outfield it looked on. Peter Costen entered the attack and he took the vital wicket of Garratt for 72. Eversholt were now 113-4. The game turned with the introduction of Mark Peart. Suddenly the visitors were finding it hard to get the ball away and Reed managed to add pressure with some excellent ground [...]
