A Fynn line between success and failure!

Reed gained an important win on Saturday as they avoided the wet weather to win their 4th game out of 6 in the Herts Championship. Given the weather forecast and a wicket that would offer the bowlers some assistance skipper Heslam had no hesitation in electing to field despite missing opening bowler Jack Tidey through injury. Toby Fynn was delighted to take the new ball and immediately caused the Chorleywood top order problems with his pace and direction. It wasn’t long before he rushed opener Rose into a mistimed pull shot and then had Aspinall well caught behind by Sean Tidey. Mitchell Cooper also impressed bowling with good zip and getting a well deserved wicket as Chorleywood were set back at 55-3. The introduction of spinner Tom Greaves to the attack tightened Reed’s grip on the game as he bowled with flight and guile and alongside Fynn and Mutucumarana put a squeeze on reducing the home side to 115-6 at lunch. Reed were determined to continue the attack after the interval and Fynn (18-58-5) and Greaves (14.3-39-4) completed the job as Chorleywood were all out for 150 in 45 overs. Reed changed the batting order slightly to accommodate the declining weather conditions and despite an early loss Greaves (44) scored freely at number 3 and put on 60 with Heslam (21) for the 2nd wicket in quick time. Although both went soon after, Mutucumarana played calmly for a classy 26 putting Reed in control at 116-4. However there were rain interruptions occurring which made it difficult for the Reed batsman including not knowing how many risks to take to score the runs quickly. When Stuart Smith and Cooper were taken off for a lengthy rain [...]

Conley and Baker score tons as Reed win again!

After a week off from league action due to the weather, Reed IV’s welcomed Hertford V’s to Freman College. Despite the looming dark clouds and occasional drizzle the match began with Reed being asked to bat first in the first ‘timed’ fixture of the season. Peter Baker and Alan Ward opened up for Reed and scored runs quickly from the offset before Ward was caught for 16. When John Kershaw was lost cheaply Reed were 40-2 from the first 6 overs bringing Mas Naeem to the crease and he played several fantastic shots as he and Baker went about rebuilding the innings and put on 102 for the third wicket with both batsmen bringing up there half centuries. When Naeem was lost for a superb 55, this brought the inform Zac Conley to the crease who typically from the offset began scoring freely punishing the bowlers and quickly brought up his fifty and was continually well supported by Baker . Zac Conley (114*) was then remarkably first to bring up his century and was soon followed by Peter Baker (102*) as the pair put-on 177 for the fourth wicket whilst Reed reached a mammoth 318-3 by the 37th over before tea was taken early due to a downpour. During the interval, the skipper Bowman declared and after a relatively long delay Reed returned to the field with an amended 44 overs to take 10 wickets. Considering the conditions Hertford’s resistance was very good and Reed were frustrated for long periods by Gibift (46) and more so Reddy (71). Wickets were shared among the bowlers including the returning Owen Hughes as well as Ed Kershaw and Zac Conley. However two excellent spells from Jack Childs (7-4-16-2) [...]

Reed 3rd XI crush division leaders

Reed III's travelled to Dame Alice Owens School to face league leaders Potters Bar, on a day when the weather was ever threatening. After winning the toss the Potters Bar Skipper chose to bat, with openers Deshan (12) and Rohan (4) looking to make quick runs, however the precision bowling of Woodcock and Graves (6-1-18-2) resulted in both batsmen being trapped LBW. Lewis (0) and Taylor (0) quickly had their stumps rattled by the pacey bowling attack. Tiron looked to make a stand but the wickets continued to fall, as confusion at the crease resulted in Harries (0) being run out. Tiron (7) soon after was caught by Robertson in the covers to give Woodcock (11-3-20-3) his third wicket. Robertson (5-3-5-2) bowled a short spell dismissing Franklin (3) and Duke (0), however a stand by Taylor and Silvey slowed the collapse of the Potters bar line up. It was the bamboozling spin of Pallet (3-1-7-1) that broke the partnership trapping Silvey (8) LBW. The innings was closed with Morss (4.3-1-14-1) taking the wicket of Barnes (1), leaving an undefeated Taylor (20) at the crease, and Potters Bar with a total of 65. Reed, with the weather looking to take a turn for the worse decided to follow on, opening with Curtis and Rob Willoughby who scored freely from the start. Youngster Duke (4-0-31-0) was getting the ball to shape nicely, but it was Barnes (5-0-24-1) who managed to get the breakthrough, clean bowling Willoughby (15), however the damage had been done with Khambhat (7*) and Curtis (38*) knocking off the runs in just 10.5 overs. The victory for Reed broke their spell of poor performances to put them back on track for a shot at [...]

Potential Realised, Promise for the future, Rob “Rooty” Lankester makes maiden century

A fantastic knock by Rob Lankester stood out in what was a very impressive batting performance by several up and coming club players. The day started with Reed skipper Marcus J.E. Baker winning the toss and electing to bat against the visiting Preston. Paul Garrott got things going in the right way with two boundaries from the first two balls. He unfortunately fell, playing on, early bringing Rob “Rooty” Lankester to the crease. His first scoring shot showed great intent with an all run 5 (no over throws involved). His partner in this enterprise was the athletic Rhodri Hughes who’s innings began in a positive fashion. The pair ran aggressively making 38 in close to no time when Hughes missed on a big score, bowled for 22. Tom Nussey chipped in an impressive 12 before playing on and Owen Hughes 7. Meanwhile Lankester looked in assured form. Never looking in danger he kicked on past 50 now partnered with the enthusiastic Ben Moody. Quick running and precise shot selection allowed them to keep the total ticking over regularly. Moody batted superbly for his 31 playing the supporting role to Lankester who off his 88th ball reached his maiden century. It was an epic innings of great maturity and skill. Given the opportunity to prove himself he showed what an excellent prospect he is for the club. He finished undefeated for 122 with Reeds final total 247 for 6. Matt Giblin bowled through his 8 overs coming down the hill and picked up two early wickets looking back near his best. Matt Yates, coming up the hill, also looked in good form. Baker replaced him and claimed a wicket thanks to a catch in the deep. [...]

9.9.12 – Is the scale of the Achievement only now beginning to sink in?

Summer Solstice Day 2015 arrives – but where is the summer? Pretty bleak and unpleasant this cricket season so far! Yesterday saw 73% of the Saracens Herts Cricket League Fixtures washed out, but incredibly, from the 27% that survived, ALL FOUR Reed League teams managed to play – AND WIN!! So a second “120 Point Weekend” for the club this season, which yesterday included a 400+ run match for the 2nd’ Xl at Reed, and an almost 550 run match at our 2nd ground in Buntingford for our 4th’ Xl!! Brighter Cricket if not brighter weather!! Mostly things are going well in 2015. Our 1st Xl are in a respectable position in the Herts Championship League, the 2nd Xl bar, a single aberrational batting performance against Ickleford have won all their matches and are well placed for another promotion, the 3rd Xl after early season availability problems are turning a corner, whilst the 4th Xl under the inspired and enthusiastic leadership of yet another ex-Reed Colt, Lloyd Bowman, are undefeated in all matches played to date. In the Herts Reader 20/20 Cup Competition we have beaten 2 x Premier League teams in Harpenden and Sawbridgeworth, and are through to the County Quarter Finals (at Reed Sunday 5th July). In the sadly disintegrating Keatley Cup, after a good win against Foxton, and a series on concessions by 2 x sides that are “big in Cambridgeshire” but unable to raise sides for midweek fixtures over the border, we seem likely to play Foxton in the Final after only 2 x qualifying matches. The only disappoint of the season to date was last weeks defeat in the 2015 Herts and Beds County Final of the National Village Cup [...]

President’s Day 2015

This year, President’s Day will take place on Sunday, 16th August 2015 at Reed Village Green, commencing at 11am. The format, as before, will be similar to 2014, 50 overs per side; the teams will be captained by Marcus Martin and James Heslam. Marcus has played for the Club from the Colts right through to the 1st XI; now steering the “2nd’s to successive promotions, he is an integral component of the Reed ‘set-up’ both on and off the pitch. James will complete his 8th year as Club Captain this season, following which he will enjoy a well deserved rest from the pressures that come with the Captaincy. The match is scheduled to last all day, the Village Green, thanks to our Groundsman Richard Robertson, will look a picture and we hope for a sunny day! A barbecue will run from mid-afternoon, and the Club bar will be open for refreshments, as usual; there is a safe playground on the opposite side of the Green, and there may be a paddling pool to keep the toddlers happy, if not clean! Alongside all of the above, I will be hosting a Charity Luncheon, again this year in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young. The reason for repeating C.R.Y. is that we are aiming to raise sufficient funds to hold a screening day at the Clubhouse to which all youngsters-especially those involved in sport, will be invited. C.R.Y., apart from many other support services and research, funds screening programmes which will diagnose previously undetected heart problems in the young. Two of our dearest friends have each lost a child following a collapse at their place of work, and there have been several more well documented cases [...]

Lankaster, Willoughby and Lankaster Represent Club Well

Previous to this game Reeds Sunday Friendly XI had played three, won two, lost one. Having analysed these matches Reeds skipper Marcus J.E. Baker came to the conclusion that whether a win or a loss, whether close finishing or not, all three games entertained till the end. Reeds fourth fixture fell into line with this trend. With The Green occupied with Village cup game against Langlebury Reeds second pitch was used to host Hertford at Freman College, Buntingford. Hertford legend Eric Riddle won the toss and chose to bat first. As usual runs were a-plenty on Freman’s quick outfield. Despite the visitors early success they were kept in check by the two wickets from Joe Graves and the superb line and movement of Jonathan Lankaster. Making his debut for Reed the youngster enticed the edge more the once for several close and missed chances. Taking pace off the ball seemed to slow down Hertford as Reed protected the boundaries. Sam Rice also managed to take two wickets with him whilst M.J.E. Baker chipped in with one himself. The slow bowlers had brought Reed back into the game. However, at the crease was the veteran Riddle who played a captains knock and reached three figures before the innings close. Ed Kershaw took the only other wicket to fall thanks to a sharp stumping from Rob Lankaster. Hertford’s 255 for 6 was about par for the ground which the Reed batsman kept in mind as they started their reply. However, the reply never really got going. After an early loss R. Lankaster had to work hard with opener Rob Willoughby to keep Reed up with the run rate. Their quick running gave the hosts the platform to [...]

“Splat!! Hitting the “Glass Ceiling in Recreational Cricket”!!

In September 2012 our Club had what most of us will agree was our very best ever weekend! On Saturday 8th September our 1st Xl won away at Dunstable, and for the first time in our Clubs history secured promotion to the Saracens Herts Cricket League Division 1, and the very next day we travelled to Lords and won the Yorkshire Tea National Village Cup Final at the home of Cricket! Nobody who was involved in, or associated with, our Club will ever forget that weekend! In 2015, we are still operating as a volunteer led club whose teams in the main comprise “home produced players”. So, almost 3 years on from “Lords”, where are we now? Player wise – bar one – we could field the same 1st Xl today that won the National Village Cup in 2012. Some more good youngsters have come through to the 1st Xl squad, and the previous team, bar one, remain with us. Our 1st Xl squeezed a little further forward in 2013 and finished 3rd in Division 1 in their first season at that level. After a League re-structure they are now playing their League Cricket in the newly formed Saracens Hertfordshire Championship League (equivalent to being at the very top end of the old Saracens Division 1), and we still play in the National Village Cup where in 2014 we went out, somewhat unluckily (damned weather!!), at the last 8 in the inter-county stage. In the Saracens Herts Championship League in 2014 we performed very well. We finished runners up in the league to a strong Hertford side reinforced that year by a very good Overseas Player seemingly playing well below his true ability level. Our [...]

Reed secure hard fought win

Reed returned to winning ways with a challenging and hard fought win over 3rd placed Flitwick on Saturday. With the pitch looking fairly green after a mixed week of weather Flitwick won an important toss and made advantage of the lively wicket and new ball reducing Reed to 47-3 after 12 overs despite Rich Wharton’s 21. The situation didn’t get much better for Reed when this became 73-5. Australian quick Jordan Leiman and Edward Sharpe each picking up 2 wickets for the home side. Reed did recover to 112-5 before Greaves fell for 21 just as he was starting to break free. All this time Reed stalwart Chris Jackson (61 not out) was superbly holding the Reed innings together for the 2nd time this season and he continued to do this receiving some support from Reeds lower order. This enabled Reed to bat their overs and post a below par score of 186 all out in 48.5 overs but one which at least gave them hope. Reed needed early wickets and that is what they got from the destructive Jack Tidey (10-2-26) who bowled with pace and accuracy. Greaves was brought into the attack early by skipper Heslam with the hope of removing danger man George Thurstance and when he duly obliged with a beautiful delivery well stumped by Wharton Flitwick were in trouble at 34-3 which included a wicket for Tom Walsingham who opened up with Tidey. Although Reed had taken early wickets on what was now a decent batting wicket and quickening outfield the home side probably remained favourites particularly with the likes of minor counties player Higginbotham at the crease. However, Tidey had other ideas removing the beds batsman for 1. At [...]

Young Reed show resilience in the heat

The heat was out in force and it was more a day for working on ones tan rather than chasing a cricket ball around The Green, which was what in store for the very young Reed side. Despite the difficult conditions Reeds youngster stood up to the challenge with great enthusiasm. At one point Reeds opponents Outlaws could easily gone way past 300 so for the home side to restrict them to 253 is a testament to their hard efforts. George Garrott had started coming down the hill and had the ball hopping in along way and picked up the wickets of both Outlaws openers. Meanwhile, coming up the hill Tom Nussey followed by Jonathan and then George Adams each gave a good try but the visitors middle order started to plunder runs. Sharma and Brennon both reached their half centuries and were set to continue when Ed Kershaw and his well flighted leg spin removed Sharma for 64. Coupled with Tom Walsingham’s own wicket Reed started to fight back. Toby Emes, also bowling leggies, then ripped through Outlaws lower order picking up four wickets for just 16. In response Reed knew that good partnerships were critical to chasing down what usually would be only a par score. Paul Garrott and Tom Nussey set the perfect example and platform. The experience of Garrott mixed with the eagerness of the young Nussey produced a 55 run opening stand. Unfortunately after Garrott was bowled for 22 Nussey was shortly afterwards run out for a fantastic 30. George Adams gave a valiant attempt at number 4 but was also bowled. Reeds strong middle order then started to improve the situation first in the guise of the Rob Lankaster, [...]
