On this occasion, Rhodri Hughes lost the toss, which was not to prove critical with Reed 3rd XI put into bat on this hot bank holiday Saturday. The Hoddesdon opening bowlers of Savanhu and Osborne (4 maidens in a row) were either notably fast and/or accurate. There was the loss of Peter Baker (4) in the 6th over bowled by Osborne with the score on 10. Fortunately, Savanhu only bowled in 3 over spells as he tired, and his last 2 were bowled off a much shorter run. Paul Garrott (38) and Rob Willoughby (45) went steadily about the run collection so that Reed were 95 at the end of the 24th over having lost Paul in that over but not before we witnessed the rarity of Paul hitting a 6. There followed the loss of Scott Nash (9) to a good catch in the deep. Then Rhodri Hughes increased the scoring rate with a quick 33, which included 6 fours, before dancing down the wicket and being stumped. The total was pushed onto 229 with some fine hitting and running between the wickets by Julien Fynn (59 not out) and Maseeh Naeem (18 not out and breathing heavily at the end). We then had tea supplied by Lloyd Bowman, who didn’t play as he was at "Twickers" but had been ably replaced by Bill Mansfield. Hoddesdon lost 2 early wickets, bowled by Fynn (2 for 18 in 7 overs) in a fine opening spell alongside Joe Graves (0 for 28 in 6 overs). Terry Savanhu then proved that he was not just an opening bowler with a robust 50 before an excellent catch by Baker off the bowling of Steve Hughes (2 for 46 [...]
Reed 2nds maintained their promotion and title push with a comprehensive victory away to Chorleywood 2nds. Batting first, Richard Johnson (26) and Phil Frenay (48) got Reed off to a flyer as both looked in fine form. However, once both fell in similar fashion, the evergreen Chris Jackson (63) and Richard Barlow (26) took up the mantle, to take Reed through towards 200. Mike Robertson (29) helped to up the rate after Barlow had perished, but a flurry of middle order wickets left Reed contemplating a below par score. However the Reed tail managed to wag with Matt Bowles (14), Rupert Martin (19 not out) and Matt Giblin (13 not out) adding 50 runs in the final 5 overs to leave Reed 274 for 9 in their 50 overs. The Chorleywood response started brightly, aided by some inconsistent Reed bowling. However an ill-judged run to Chris Jackson and some excellent line bowling from Owen Hughes (6-1-17-3) flipped the game in Reed’s favour. Spin twins Matt Bowles and Ed Garrott then both also picked up 3 wickets each as Reed ran through Chorleywood, bowling them out for 131. Reed stay top with 2 games to play. A depleted First XI with three players making their first team debuts this season, held off a strong Dunstable side to strengthen their hold on a play-off place. After electing to bat, captain Rob Lankester must have been delighted to see the returning William Heslam (36) and Zachary McGuigan nullify the threat of nemesis, Luke Cherry, with an opening stand of 90. Having hit Beds' Sam Cherry for 6, Heslam departed bowled next ball, but McGuigan (64) and Lankester (38) then added a further 55 to leave Dunstable reeling at 145 for 2. Nevertheless, the evergreen Robert Simpkins started to pick up wickets on a regular basis, finishing with 5 for 43. Only James Heslam (36) offered sustained resistance, but Reed's total of 232 for 7 looked to be par for the conditions. McGuigan (3-34) made it look more imposing, however, and with Sean Tidey as economical as ever, taking 2-30 from his allotted 10 overs, Dunstable slumped to 111-7. There was a twist in the tail, though, as John Barry (51) and Sam Jewiss (31) put together a half-century partnership. With skipper, Lankester, running out of bowling options, Jack Caine stepped up dismissing the last three batsmen for just 12 runs, including two clean bowled. Dunstable 174 all out in 40 overs. As a result, Reed will probably secure a play-off place with a win against struggling Ampthill next week, especially if Shenley Village are docked points for allegedly fielding one overseas player too many. SATURDAY (SHPCL): All three teams batted first. All three teams won - the Firsts by 58 runs, the Seconds by 143 and the Thirds by 73 runs. Reed lost 21 wickets overall, the oppositions 30. Reed totalled 735 runs against 461 from our combined opponents. All pretty comfortable judging by the figures but in reality it was not that easy. At home, Zac Mcguigan top-scored with 64 backed-up by scores in the thirties from Rob Lankester, James Heslam and younger brother Will as Reed reached 232 for 7. Dunstable were all out for 174. McGuigan and Jack Caine took 3 wickets each. There were 3 wickets each too for Matt Bowles, Owen Hughes and Ed Garrott as Chorleywood were dismissed for 131 in their failed chase of the 2nd XI's 274 for 9. Chris Jackson had hit 63 and Phil Frenay 48 in the Reed innings. Scott Nash had a 3-wicket haul as well when Reed Thirds bowled out Hoddesdon for 156. Julien Fynn, Steve Hughes and Rob Willoughby each took 2 wickets. Reed's total of 229 for 5 was reliant on Fynn's 59 with useful contributions of 45 from Willoughby, 38 from Paul Garrott and 33 from Rhodri Hughes. SUNDAY: No fixture at Reed. An RCC tour party is expected in the Bournemouth area sometime during the morning. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

Reed 3rds travelled to Bushey 3rds with both teams in the promotion hunt. Reed skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss and elected to bowl with the wicket looking difficult to bat on. Reed’s bowling started well with Joe Graves (9-0-31-2) and Owen Hughes (9-3-34-1) bowling tightly and taking early wickets that they deserved. The change bowlers of Kieran McKinna (7.1-2-17-1) and Ollie Sayers (6-1-31-2) kept up the good work from the opening pair and took wickets at vital times. Reed kept the pressure on with Rob Willoughby (9-0-33-2) and Matt Yates (4-1-25-2) who took two wickets in two balls leaving the hosts in trouble at 123 for 8. However, some resistance from Ali (57 not out) batting nicely with the tail took Bushey to 186 all out in the last over. Reed’s reply didn’t start well, losing Peter Baker and Rob Willoughby in consecutive balls leaving Reed 9 for 2. Paul Garrott soon followed leaving Reed 18 for 3 from 10 overs with Sohail taking all 3 wickets. Rhodri Hughes and Scott Nash started to rebuild the innings putting the bad balls away and running well between the wickets. As soon as they brought up the 50 partnership, Rhodri was bowled for 25 from a poor shot leaving Reed 68 for 4 with plenty of work to do. Bringing younger brother Owen Hughes to the crease, he and Nash continued to put the bad balls away and rotate the strike well. These two built a match winning partnership of 103 for the 5th wicket with Scott Nash falling for a brilliant 84. Reed only needed 16 to win but they lost Kieran McKinna cheaply putting a bit of pressure on. But Matt Yates (7 not [...]
Reed Seconds remained top of Division 4B of the Herts League with a hard-earned win over Northampton Exiles at The Green. The visitors won the toss and put Reed into bat on a day that looked as if it may help the bowlers. Richard Barlow fell third ball as he was bowled by Kayani. Four overs later one of last week’s centurions, James Sandford, slashed at a wide delivery and was caught behind, the hosts were 14 for 2. Skipper Ed Garrott fell for just 2, which brought Michael Robertson to the crease as he and Phil Frenay set about rebuilding the innings. Robertson played with controlled aggression, whilst Frenay played the anchor role. Robertson fell shortly after the fifty partnership was brought up. George Teebon soon followed, Reed were 93 for 5. George Garrott came to the wicket and played the ball with exquisite timing and Frenay began to up the ante and passed eighty from the other end too. They put on a 110 partnership in 107 balls to turn the innings on its head. Garrott fell shortly after posting his fifty. Reed lost their last four wickets going for runs and ended 231 all out on the stroke of fifty overs. Reed opened the bowling with Rupert Martin and Julien Fynn. The Exiles' skipper was the first to go, the first of two catches at mid-wicket from George Garrott. Sandford turned golden arm with ball as he took 2-28 as he and Martin 2-29 began to turn the screw at 69-4. The bowling was backed up by superb fielding and two run outs, one from Matt Bowles and one from Martin, and the Exiles were 114 for 6. Bowles, 2-27, and the [...]
In a match versus Shenley Village delayed and reduced to 36 overs per side as overnight rain had seeped through the covers, Reed eschewed their usual belligerent approach to concentrate on rotating the strike. The measure of their success can be gauged by the fact only 6 boundaries were struck, yet they totalled 125 in 34 overs. Just 5 batsmen reached double figures with James Heslam (29) top scoring. As in the reverse fixture, Kris Nissen proved a handful finishing with 2-18 in his 7 over burst and Marwan Mohammed (4-27) took out the lower order. Facing a strong batting line up, Reed started with a flourish, Zac Mcguigan bowling Northants' Charles Thurston for a third ball duck. However it was Jack Tidey who caught the eye with an explosive spell of 8-2-11-3, clean bowling two of his victims. At the other end, Tom Greaves was at his parsimonious best, with his 7 overs going at exactly one per over as well as a wicket. The spin of Sean Tidey (1-20) and Marcus Martin (2-24) also frustraated the Shenley batsmen, who had stuttered to 62-8 from 28 overs. Indeed Martin snared both the dangerous Nissen and finally the lynch pin of the innings, Mohammed (42), through some outstanding catches by Ed Wharton and Matt Sampson. The latter also claimed a run out and when Jack Caine gained a wicket, Shenley were all out for 98. They had managed a mere 3 boundaries in their entire innings. It was a sparkling display of bowling and ground fielding, which means Reed have leap-frogged over their opponents to second place in the league with just 3 games of the season left.
