Reed melt on tour

The sun shone, the runs flowed, and the prestigious end of season tour match proved a social and cricketing success. Invited to bat first on a belter of a home track, openers Martyn Cook and u15 Captain Joey Greenslade got off to a lightening start, with 8 off the visiting captain’s first over, Joey despatching the second ball over the fence at mid wicket. Thus the next 9 overs followed, with the two first teamers enjoying the friendly bowling and the generous fielding. Martyn retired on 51 after facing just 34 deliveries. Joey, having looked assured for his 40, was cut in half by one that jagged back from Sean Tidey. Lee Whiddett (22) and Chris Grenslade (48 off 35) maintained the momentum, as did Tim Hales (44 off 46) as the middle order piled on the runs, bringing up the 200 mark in just the 30th over. Sam Man and Neal Clarke both hit maximums in breezy cameo knocks as the home side looked to post a massive score, and Michael Farmer weighed in with 2 glorious switch hits for consecutive boundaries as the hosts edged ever closer to 300. Matt Clarke scored a quick fire 20 off just 12 deliveries, but was unable to see his team pass that target. Following a sumptuous tea, brothers Ben and Sam Carding bowled in tandem, restricting the visitors to just 52 off the first 10, each taking a wicket. Phil Frenay, with 9 boundaries, passed 50, but was out caught behind off Mike Farmer in the same over before he could retire. Surprise success for Reeds “composite” 1st Xl

With 2nd place in the SHCL Herts Championship League secured the previous week, Reed found themselves in dire selection straits with 5 of their regular 1st Xl either injured or absent on holiday. With Reed 2nd Xl seeking to win their own league the Club Selectors decision was taken to top up the 1st Xl team for this weeks with 5 players from Reeds normal 3rd Xl. The composite Reed 1st Xl team, missing all 3 of their normal opening bowlers, and several top batsmen, travelled to play 3rd placed Totteridge Millhillians skippered by former England Test Star John Emburey. Totteridge won the toss and invited Reed to bat first. Will Heslam went cheaply but then Sam Fairbrother and Chris Jackson took the score along at a good pace before Fairbrother fell stumped for 30, and soon after Jackson departed caught for 34. Reed limped from 96-3 to stand at 128-6 with all the 1st Xl regulars dismissed and a low total threatening. However, the elevated Reed players came to the fore and all made significant contributions to the Reed cause. 17-year-old Reece Fitzgerald led the way with a marvelous innings of 40 and was well supported by fellow promising youngster Jack Caine who made 18. Michael Robertson struck a swashbuckling 27 not out and the Reed tail certainly wagged pushing the score to a respectable 237 all out in 44.6 of the 50 overs available to them. Moody on Form Despite Loss

A conference fixture was arranged between Reed and the travelling side J.B. from the Wembley area. Marcus J.E. Baker won the toss and inserted the visitors. Reed took the early advantage with two cheap wickets falling, one to Sam Rice and the other to Joe Graves. Both bowled well in their opening spells but after the initial breakthroughs J.B. recovered thanks to magnificent innings by Imzan and Zahid. Both cruised past their half centuries and looked in complete control as Reeds bowlers seemed ineffective. However, Graham Stuart then made the breakthrough by bowling Imzan for 73. Now into the final 10 overs J.B.’s incoming batsman played in swashbuckling mode many sacrificing their wickets in the pursuit of big boundaries. Zak Conley chipped in with a wicket, Baker took three expensive wickets and Rice returned and took his second thanks to a stumping by Ben Moody off the last ball of the innings. J.B.’s aggressive batting taking them to 260 for 8. Reed started very poorly and found themselves at 31 for 6 when Rob Willoughby was given out LBW for 22. Number 8 Baker joined Moody at the crease and instructed his young partner to forget the situation and just to enjoy himself. Which is exactly what the pair did, perfecting the simple art of blocking the straight ones and slaughtering the bad balls. Reeds total benefited from Moody’s aggressive running which saw the home side pinch extra runs. Despite adding just under 100 runs together Reed were still a long way off their target so Baker threw caution to the wind and was duly punished by being bowled for 63. Selection is a thankless task …. But when the going gets tough, the tough get going!

It’s been a quiet couple of months on the “View From the Chair” front. Hurrah, I hear the cries!! But fresh from my recent wounding criticism (and near suspension!!) by the rampant disciplinary hierarchy of a cricketing judiciary, I have risen “Phoenix like” from the ashes! Since when did writing a hard hitting, website published, match report – with some frank assessments of some poor, and some might say “inconsistent” Umpiring (I did!) – constitute “Social Media Abuse”? Still we won’t go there – not this week! The last month has seen some great highs, and a significant low, in the fortunes of our Club. The significant low came in our dropping out of the Village Cup at the last 8 stage. You will not find a person East of Aylesbury who will not agree and firmly believe that Reed would have scorched into the NVC Semi-Finals had that “Act of God” not poured a deluge of thundery rain on our ground when we needed 165 to win with 10 wickets in hand and 239 balls of the match to go!! The events of the following week were disappointing but on THAT day we were in truth 2nd best in several departments. The highs have been many and varied. Our Midweek XI once again secured local “bragging rights” by winning the Keatley Cup. Our 1st Xl have survived the experience of the unpleasant and unsatisfactory match at Hertford to record further good wins that see them guaranteed to finish as Runners Up in the SHCL Championship League and into a Premier League Play Off Match for possible promotion into the very top League of Hertfordshire Cricket. Vital 9th wicket partnership gives the 3rd XI a defendable total!

Whilst the hosts’ captain, Mark Parkinson, was at the crease, Met Police Bushey were on-course to overhaul Reed’s total of 167. When he departed, caught by Sam Rice off a skyer, for 39, the remaining wickets soon followed. It illustrated how vital Reed’s ninth wicket partnership had been. In their innings, Reed’s number 10, Matt Yates had contributed only 2 not out of a forty-run stand with skipper Maseeh Naeem, but in such a confident and competent way, that without his support, Reed would probably have been all-out for 130 and well within range of Met Police Bushey. Earlier when Reed batted, the Willoughby brothers had set-off at good pace until Rob fell for 12. Fynn then scored 19 taking the total to 60, but 3 quick wickets left Reed reeling at 67 for 4, and then Kieran Willoughby was bowled for 28. Peter Baker and Maseeh Naeem quelled the route and added 40 before Baker lost his off stump. By this time, Naeem, the long-standing captain who has overseen successive promotions from Division 11, and has been an ever present Third XI player since its creation eight seasons ago, was in fine form, alternating between hard-hit boundaries and air-shots, but with the loss of two more wickets he had to re-think his strategy when batting with young Yates as he carefully picked-off boundaries each over and farmed the strike. Naeem finally fell for a well-crafted 63. And an all-out total of 167 was certainly defendable. James Hooper was making a welcome return and opened the bowling with left-armer, Yates. President’s Day is back on!

Dear All, Following the weather affected NVC Quarter Final match, which had to be replayed at Dinton, on what should have been President’s Day, I amongst many, have just about recovered from the double disappointment of losing to Dinton AND having to call off the President’s Day celebrations! BUT ALL IS NOT LOST!!! A PHOENIX IS RISING FROM THESE ASHES!!! After many requests, I have decided to re-instate President’s Day, which will become the final game of the season, to be held on………………… SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2014 The match will commence at 11am, the Teams lunch at 1pm, and the Charity Lunch at 1:30pm. All the previously announced arrangements will stay in place, as stated in my original letter; what IS required is your attendance on the 20th!! Reed on the verge of Premier League Status

After Saturdays comprehensive win produced a seasons “double” over Knebworth Park CC, Reed find themselves guaranteed of finishing in 2nd position in the Saracens Herts Cricket League Championship Division. Table topping Hertford are assured of the title whilst Reed are 84 Points clear of 3rd Club Flitwick with just 2 League matches left to play. This position means that Reed, as League Runner Up are assured of the “Play Off” position and so on Saturday 6th September they will play at Home against the 2nd bottom side in the Herts Premier League with the prize being a 2015 Season Herts Premier League position. At the present moment this match seems likely to be against Sawbridgeworth CC or Letchworth CC. A move into the Herts Premier League would cap a memorial rise for Reed from a mid division Herts Village Cricket Club to playing in the very highest recreational Cricket League available to them, competing with the very best of the major town teams in Hertfordshire Cricket. To this can be added Reed’s National Village Cup win at Lords in 2012 and all this achieved with a side comprising mainly youngsters who have grown up through the Clubs junior ranks. Against Knebworth Reed skipper James Heslam won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first. Injuries have ravaged the Reed bowling ranks in recent weeks and Saturday saw ageing Reed stalwart Peter Tidey recalled to 1st Xl duty well into his 50’s and clearly the “Father of the side”! Division 10 side too good for the 4th XI

Having completed their 2014 League fixtures, Reed 4th XI hosted Ickleford 3rds in a Friendly at the Freman College Oval. The Division 10 side batted first with their openers comfortably putting-on 166 for the first wicket although it was only in the latter part of their partnership that they accelerated the run rate to 5 per over. Soon after, Owen Hughes returned for a second spell and ended with figures of 3 for 40 from 10 overs; Zac Conley was inexpensive conceding 28 runs from 9 overs whilst there was a wicket each for Ben Moody and Ollie Mansfield. Ickleford declared at 259 for 6 with half-centuries from Howard, Persey and S Norrington. Captain Peter Baker was caught off the first ball of Reed’s innings and a second wicket fell in that same first over. Josh Conley, 25, and Lloyd Bowman, 18, applied the sticking plaster as they took the score to 62 before both fell to consecutive deliveries from Webb who eventually finished with 5 for 32. After that Reed’s young players did their best to keep-out the Ickleford bowlers but wickets fell at regular intervals. Ben Moody made 10, Owen Hughes 14, and debutant Benji Mansfield a quick 8 by finding the boundary twice in two balls, but he was caught off the next delivery as Reed slipped to 109 all out. Reed IV lost to Ickleford III by 150 runs.

Reed promotion push back on track

Reed 1XI won a crucial 2nd vs 3rd game in the Hertfordshire Championship on Saturday. Reed captain James Heslam won the toss and elected to field to try to secure the win or if not allow his side the ability to play out for a draw if needed with hosts West Herts 33 points behind Reed before the start of the game. Reed opening bowlers Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn started off well restricting West Herts to 26-1 off 11 overs. However, the hosts recovered to 116-1 off 28 overs and looked well set for a decent score. This was despite the efforts of Hertfordshire Stags spinner Tom Greaves who bowled an excellent spell of 18-2-67 on a wicket offering very little once the new ball had gone. Although Reed now took wickets on occasions West Herts kept the board ticking over and gradually made their way to an imposing target of 275-8 off their 60 overs. Other wicket taking bowlers were Reed's other Hertfordshire Stags bowler Jack Tidey who bowled very well again picking up figures of 13-3-45, Sam Fairbrother with 5-2-28 and Alex Mutucamarana 9-1-41. Tom Walsingham also bowled well in his return to the 1st team bowling attack. Reed knew it was going to be difficult to chase the runs down against the renowned West Herts spin attack, particularly after a shower spiced the wicket up a little during the change between innings. However, they did get off to a solid start reaching 33-0 off 11 overs. At this point though both Heslams fell leaving Reed under pressure at 33-2. Robertson Rips through Langleybury 3’s

Reed skipper Maseeh Naeem won the toss and elected to field on the Freman College pitch, known to be batsman-friendly. Michael Robertson and Matt Giblin opened the bowling. The latter went for 14 off his first over, but quickly found his rhythm and bowled some economical lines, beating the bat on several occasions but with no reward. It was Robertson who did the damage to Langleybury's innings, after picking up the wickets of both openers, he went on to claim 5 wickets, ending with impressive figures of 14-4-52-5. Julian Fynn replaced Giblin, and also impressed. He picked up 3 wickets off his 10 over spell. Ian Roberts picked up the remaining wicket, continuing to impress as a reliable wicket taker for the 3rd team this season. Langleybury were reduced to 138/9, and it seemed Reed would have a fairly low score to chase. However a last wicket stand of 67 frustrated Reed's bowlers. Even the injured first-teamer, Kallum Ward was unable to take the final wicket. Langleybury finished on 203/9, a much higher total than anticipated. In reply, Reed opened the batting with the in-form Richard Barlow, and Matt Bowles. Both batted well, putting on 34 off the first 7 overs for the first wicket. Bowles was out caught for 15, having made a solid start to his innings. Richard Johnson came in at number 3, and batted well for his 18. Kallum Ward came in at 4, and played his usual aggressive game, hitting a quick 21 before getting caught on the boundary. Richard Barlow continued to play a solid innings, hitting multiple boundaries but lost his wicket one run short of his 50. The next two wickets fell cheaply, leaving Reed at 123/5 [...]
