Reed won the toss and decided to put Welwyn Garden City into bat on a dampish track. The Reed opening attack kept the Welwyn Garden City batsmen under the cosh early on and made scoring hard. William Clarke got the early wicket Reed wanted having O’Regan well caught for just 7. Peter Costen then joined the attack and quickly removed the other opener. Then Welwyn Garden City rebuilt with Brian and Hyatt putting on over 100 for the 3rd wicket. They still weren’t scoring at a quick rate though. Martin Seale then came back into the attack and removed Hyatt for 33. Brian went on to make 115 not out and was the mainstay of the Welwyn Garden City innings.
Reed made a quick start with Baz Curtis hitting a rapid 23. He was
first out with the score on 29. Reed suddenly found themselves 55-5
and in deep trouble. Richard Tufton and Phil Divers started to steady
the ship. They rebuilt well and got Reed into a good position with a
solid partnership. Divers was the first to go for a good 30. Peter
Costen replaced him and started to smashed the ball to all parts of
the ground.Tufton was finally run out for 57, his maiden first team
half century. Peter Costen continued his smash and grab raid on the
Welwyn Garden City bowling. He hit a huge six to put Reed to within
striking distance. Martin Seale came in with 9 balls to go and hit a
couple of 2s and then with 3 balls to go smashed a 4 to win the came.
Reed got home with 3 wickets to spare.
