Late Bowles surge not enough to catch Langleybury

Reed began their NVC campaign away at Langleybury. Winning the toss, captain Jack Tidey inserted the hosts. Manzoor blitzed his way to a 23-ball 35 before falling to the first of three Stuart Smith catches. This off of Toby Fynn. Jack Tidey sent fellow opener Walker back soon after and with the opening bowling attack taking a further wicket each, Langleybury were wobbling at 57 for 4. Julien Fynn on his NVC debut took a wicket with his first ball, the second of two James Heslam catches. Skipper Will Oxley and Ross Channer then built a 96-run partnership before Sean Tidey removed Oxley for 65. Julien Fynn took two further wickets and Channer remained 29 not out as Langleybury ended on 187 for 9. Wickets were shared around J Fynn 3-31, T Fynn 2-37, J Tidey 2-40 and S Tidey 2-47. Reed set about their reply steadily before Jack Tidey was bowled by Illot for 11, Rob Lankester soon followed (19-2). The Heslam brothers James and Will dug deep until James went for 23, the first of three wickets for Cheeseman. Will went for a gritty 27 (86-5). Despite being hit in the face Stuart Smith hit 31 but wickets were falling regularly. At 118-8 Matt Bowles strode out, he kept Reed's hopes alive with a cameo 27 off 22 balls and shared a 40-run partnership with Julien Fynn. However it wasn't to be as lllot and Oxley returned to take the last two wickets giving Langleybury a 27 run victory. Report submitted by Neil Haslam.

Reed 1sts cruise to another 9 wicket win thanks to Cooper

For the second League match in succession Reed cruised to a 9 wicket victory, this time against an under-strength Langleybury side. Skipper Tom Greaves inserted the opposition and must have reflected on his decision when they reached 89-1 with Jack Tidey the only successful bowler after a sharp opening spell punctuated by two rain breaks. He finished with figures of 9-4-18-1. However, with the introduction of Mitchell Cooper, the game was turned on its head. He first removed the stubborn Richard Soulsby for 38 and finally accounted for the dashing Nahim Amin for 51. With 4 more victims, including the second acrobatic one-handed catch by Sean Tidey in the slips, Cooper finished with the impressive figures of 12-3-31-6. Tom Greaves, as ever mopped up the tail taking 3-45. As a result, Reed only needed 28 overs to reach the winning total of 137-1 thanks to an opening partnership between Will Heaslam (66*) and Ed Wharton (29) as well as another stand of 56 between Heslam and Rob Lankester (27*). Reed took 30 points from the game and Langleybury just 1. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Wharton fireworks not enough

A scintillating opening partnership of 134 from 20 overs by Ed Wharton (86) and Rob Lankester (35) was not enough to carry Reed to victory over Langleybury. However, given that there were seven enforced changes from last week’s game, a total of 219 represented a creditable performance. Earlier, Langleybury were on the rack at 106-5 with Toby Fynn (10-1-52-3) and Ian Osborne (10-1-56-3) in the wickets. Yet Rhys Williams (50) and Khalid Manzoor (57) turned the tide with a partnership of 89; Langleybury finishing with 260-9 as Ed Wharton (10-1-31-2) and Karl Ward (10-0-36-1) helped to stem their momentum. A watching Steven Finn must have wished he was opening the bowling again as Wharton in particular flayed a wayward attack. When he was eventually caught on the boundary, having struck 70 in boundaries, there were useful knocks by Matt Sampson (21), Chris Jackson (14), Michael Robertson (14) and Ian Osborne, who anchored the innings with a patient 22 not out. Overall, Reed should be satisfied with 11 hard-won bonus points. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.
