Reed steamroller Ampthill on Greaves’s return

The self-styled ‘Saviour’ (a.k.a. Tom Greaves) returned from his honeymoon to mastermind Reed’s thumping of Ampthill. Having been put in, Ed Wharton showed commendable restraint as well as controlled belligerence in compiling a well worked half-century. On his dismissal, James Heslam took over the anchor role gradually accelerating as the overs ticked by to amass a match-winning 83. They were supported by some useful cameos from Rob Lankester (22), Tom Greaves (18), Stuart Smith (22) and Karl Ward (17*). A score of 244-8 seemed above par on a wicket and outfield affected by the overnight rain and indeed it proved so as Ampthill were blown away by Reed’s sharpshooting attack. At first Beds’ opener, Nick Barden, blitzed 37 mostly in boundaries, but when he was snaffled by Stuart Smith off Ed Wharton (2-38), the rot set in. Toby Fynn had already continued his prolific wicket taking start to the season with 2-19, which was followed by Jack Tidey (3-16) and Tom Greaves (2-18). It was left to Karl Ward to complete the rout by ending an obdurate final wicket partnership in his first over as Ampthill were skittled out for 99 in 25 overs, thanks to some accurate bowling supported by another fine catching display, including 3 for keeper Sean Tidey and 2 for James Heslam. More a fine team effort then, rather than divine inspiration, as Reed moved up to 3rd in the Championship. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Wharton puts Ampthill to the sword

Ed Wharton, in his best spell since joining Reed, ran through Ampthill’s top order registering figures of 8-2-12-5, including the prize wicket of Australian Jarryd Biviano yorked for 16. With help from Jack Tidey (1-22) the visitors were 31-6 at one stage. Tom Greaves (3-26) and Ed Garrott (1-22) mopped up the tail enders, despite some fine stroke play from Bedford Schoolboys Liam Everitt and Ben Slawinski. Fearing the forecasted rain, skipper Greaves sent in his big hitters, Ed Wharton (15) and Sean Tidey, who soon posted 69-2 from 8 overs. Tidey, continuing his devastating batting in the Village Cup where he was adjudged "Performance of the Round", smashed 47 from just 20 balls, scoring all but 3 runs in 4’s and 6’s. It was left to Rob Lankester (16) and James Heslam (20 not out) to steer Reed home to a 7 wicket win in 17 overs. Reed are now less than a handful of points behind the league leaders. Reed 1sts scramble a 1 wicket win

Toby Fynn was the unlikely hero with the bat as Reed scrambled a one wicket win at Ampthill Park. After another blistering spell of pinch-hitting by Ed Wharton (66 with 54 in boundaries) Reed were strolling to pass Ampthill’s total of 144 at 115-1. A stand of 73 with Rob Lankester (25) had put them in the driving seat after just 20 overs. However, the Australian, Jarryd Biviano, turned the match with a fine spell of spin bowling taking 6-24 from 7 overs. As a result, Reed lost 8 for 26 and it seemed that they had thrown the game away, but against the odds, last man Toby Fynn calmly flicked Biviano off his legs down to the fine leg boundary to snatch victory. This followed a pattern set in the home side’s innings after Biviano had started them off at thundering rate, taking 26 from the first over as Ed Wharton had to pull out of the attack with a back problem. At 105-2 from 15 overs with Biviano on 60 a huge total looked to be on the cards, but Tom Greaves deceived him with a ball through the gate. Indeed, Greaves (10-2-39-3) and Sean Tidey (10-2-22-3) then spun out the middle order, leaving Marcus Martin (2-5) and Mitchell Cooper (1-0) to mop up the tail. Ampthill, themselves, thus lost 8 for 39. It set up a nerve jangling ending to a topsy-turvy game. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.
