ECB announcement: The Return of Recreational Cricket

Please see the attached announcement from the ECB. Whilst this is good news, please don’t think that everything will be back to normal straight away. We won’t be able to just shake out the whites and turn-up next Saturday and start playing fixtures. There will be an awful lot of logistics to be worked-out and we await more detailed instructions from the ECB, the Herts League, the County Board and the Village Cup organisers how exactly Clubs will begin to host opponents as well as deciding the type of match format, (e.g., come ready changed, how to provide teas / refreshments, the use / handling of cricket balls, 50/50 overs or other, panel umpires - many of whom are over the age of 60 and still on the risk list). In a survey earlier in the spring, some clubs had indicated that they would not even fulfil matches this year - we don’t know whether they have changed their stance since, so I repeat that the Fixture List for the remainder of the 2020 season has still to be confirmed. There is much to be discussed and decided. When I have more definite news I shall let you know. Please continue to stay safe and keep well. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club. ======================================================================================================= Dear all, We are delighted that the UK Government has given the green light for recreational cricket in England* to return from Saturday July 11. The latest update from the UK Government signals progression from Step 3 to Step 4 of ECB’s roadmap to return for the recreational game, meaning competitive cricket matches in England with adjustments to respect hygiene and social distancing would be permitted. ECB has [...]

“GOING AHEAD” or “CANCELLED”

In March, at the moment that all cricket events were to be suspended indefinitely because of Coronavirus, I posted that the amount of fixtures was too numerous for me to indicate them individually as "Postponed" or "Cancelled". Now that there has been a relaxation of some of the imposed restrictions and there is likely to be further guidance during the next few weeks, I want to repeat that the matches and events shown in the Calendar on the right of this homepage are all still to be considered as not happening unless otherwise indicated. Once the Government advise the ECB, and the ECB liaise with County Boards, then Clubs agree to some sort of match programme, and we are given a definite date to begin the 2020 season, I shall update each of the remaining fixtures, practices and club events as "GOING AHEAD" or "CANCELLED". I repeat that no date for the resumption of recreational cricket has been given as yet. How, when, and in what format, matches are to be conducted remains to be seen. Please continue to follow the guidelines, stay safe and take care. PGB Peter G Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed CC 24th June 2020

Brian Bevan 1945 to 2020, RIP

The sad news has reached me today that former Reed cricketer, Brian Bevan, died this morning at his home in Spain. Brian was 74 and is survived by his wife, Caroline, to whom we send our condolences. Brian was a most prolific batsman, (and handy bowler), who played for Reed during the 1980s and early-90s scoring literally thousands of runs, sometimes more than 2,000 in any one season. Brian had been ill for sometime but I understand that his death was not Corona-related. To my knowledge, Brian represented several local clubs including Cottered (where he lived), Aspenden and Johnson Matthey before joining Reed. Caroline’s brother-in-law, Richard Apperley, (also a former RCC player and now a qualified Umpire), reckoned that Brian would have played 7 matches a week if he had had the chance! But then he simply stopped playing cricket virtually overnight and took up golf instead. I am sure you will join me in sending our sympathies to Caroline, Dawn and Richard on the passing of a real Reed Legend. If you did not know him personally, I am certain you would have heard “Robbo” regale us with the stories of Brian’s batting exploits! PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.

Roadmap for the Return of Recreational Cricket (Step 3), 11th June 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE ECB, 11th JUNE 2020. ============================================================================================= We [ECB] have identified five steps for the recreational game’s proposed phased return in England this summer. England is currently in step 3 – which allows for small group training sessions of up to six people while respecting social distancing.* The Welsh government is due to review current restrictions on 18 June, after which time we will provide further guidance. As cricket is a non-contact sport that involves individual disciplines within a team environment, forms of the game can be played while respecting social distancing. We will continue to be led by UK government advice and will only move into step 4 when the guidance allows and when it is medically safe to do so. ============================================================================================= YOU CAN READ THE LATEST ON THE ECB's WEBSITE, www.ecb.co.uk ============================================================================================= Whilst there, check out some of the cricket / ball skills you can practice at home. There is a free App that you can download aimed at youngsters (search for "Dynamos Cricket App"), but perhaps older players might benefit as well! There are also some film clips accessible on YouTube that I have seen - perhaps you have already discovered them too. * Please wait for further news how Reed CC will shortly implement plans for Small Group Training Sessions. All the best, PGB, Hon. Secretary, Reed CC.

REPETITION – NETS ARE CLOSED

To Reed CC Members, I am repeating the message from last weekend conveying the Club Committee’s decision that the Nets at Reed CC are CLOSED and NOT to be used. If people choose to ignore this Notice then Reed CC take no responsibility. However, the full Guidance from the ECB can be read on their website, www.ecb.co.uk A summary is reproduced below but if you need to read the links you will have to go their website. I highlight this paragraph: ECB is clear that outdoor facilities should only reopen if those responsible for them are ready to do so and they can do so safely, following public health guidance: no club should reopen their outdoor facilities if they feel unable to meet the requirements. In considering the FULL Guidance Notes, your Club Committee decided that RCC would NOT reopen Nets so please heed the advice and resist the urge to use them. PGB Peter G. NETS CLOSED AT REED

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) issued guidance on the 15th May 2020 regarding Cricket Net facilities and their management. I know many of you would have received or read their message which recommends certain high levels of safety criteria to be met before Nets can be used for practice. Consequently, Reed Cricket Club’s General Committee has considered this guidance and has decided that the Nets on The Green at Reed will remain closed indefinitely. Reed CC take no responsibility for anyone choosing to ignore this notice. We will revisit this decision as and when further advice and guidance is issued. Please stay safe and take care. PGB Peter G. The Hertfordshire League (SHPCL) Handbook 2020

The Hertfordshire League (SHPCL) has printed their annual Handbook in a very reduced print run and sent 2 copies to each Club, (normally about 20). Clearly, we can’t share those around between us! BUT, there is also an on-line version that everyone is able to access. Go to www.hertsleague.co.uk, look at the recent Posting, “Herts League Handbook 2020” then click on the words “online version”. The Handbook will open up and by clicking full screen you will be able to browse more easily through all the articles, clubs’ details, “fixtures”, last year’s tables and records going back decades. After a quick glance this morning, I highlight Pages 94, 98, 99, 110 and 148 although there might be other references to Reed CC elsewhere. Happy reading! Stay safe everyone and please continue to take care. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.
