REED EDGED IN VILLAGE CUP THRILLER!

Reed fell just short in an entertaining Village Cup match at The Green on Sunday. Due to Reed's promotion to the Herts Premier League, no first team players could be selected for this year's competition despite Reed being the defending champions. Having won the toss skipper Ed Garrott put the visitors into bat. Redbourn set off at a good pace punishing anything loose from the opening bowlers Julien Fynn (7-0-41-3) and Rupert Martin (6-0-34-0). Fynn trapped Ed Hales lbw for 32 (52-1). Cutler and Will Hales then set a 109 partnership which threatened to take the game away from Reed. A great piece of fielding from Garrott eventually ran out Hales. Another 50 run partnership was broken by Karl Ward (8-0-37-2) . A flurry of late wickets left Redbourn on 237-7 at the end of their 40 overs. Reed set about the chase against the young Redbourn opening attack steadily, Rob Willoughby was the first to fall with the score on 28, Rich Barlow soon followed for 18. When skipper Garrott and then Michael Robertson fell, Reed were wobbling at 71-4. Ward and Scott Nash now began to up the run rate, Ward fell for 42, Fynn now joined Nash and they brought Reed back into the contest with a 57 partnership. Nash fell trying to hit his third consecutive six. Fynn continued with some great shots before falling for 35. Reed now needed more than ten an over. An unbeaten 23 from MJE Baker with help from both Martin and Matt Bowles left Reed just 28 runs short of their target. Rain frustrates Reed First’s victory push after great bowling performance.

The unpredictable British weather put pay to any hope of Reed forcing a victory away at Hertford after a marvellous all round bowling display. Having won the toss and putting their hosts into bat, Hertford reached 28 before Ed Wharton (6-3-30-1) trapped Wray lbw for 14, Jack Tidey (9-1-27-3) added fellow opener Riddle soon after and Hertford were only 34-2. Mitchell Cooper provided an eventful first over conceding 3 runs off his first two balls and then providing a catch to wicket keeper Rich Wharton, before pinning Lawrence lbw with the next delivery, skipper Cowell was almost the hatrick victim as the umpire turned down the shout for another lbw. He soon fell to Jack Tidey and at 48-5 the county town side was struggling. The Reed bowlers continued to turn the screw with Sean Tidey (9-0-36-1) and Toby Fynn (7-0-28-2) also getting in on the act and Hertford were staring down the barrel at 89-8. A much needed 56 partnership for the ninth wicket between Leather (42) and Underdown (30) gave the Hertford score respectability. Fynn and Cooper (5.2-0-38-3) came back to take the last two wickets dismissing Hertford for 149 inside 37 overs just as the drizzle arrived. The rain got steadily heavier during the tea break and the game was eventually called off by the umpires with Reed unable to begin their reply. Both sides pick up 10 points for the No Result. Encouraging signs for Reed despite a loss on their return from lockdown

Reed’s First Eleven played their first game of a shortened season against Totteridge Millhillians First Eleven at The Green on Saturday. Winning the toss on a bright and humid day at The Green, skipper Rob Lankester opted to bat. Ed Wharton cracked three boundaries for Reed in the first over before edging a catch behind. Will Heslam and Rob Lankester took the score beyond fifty before a flurry of wickets left the home side wobbling at 78 for 6. A gusty 38 from Mitchell Cooper (3 fours and two sixes) and 20 from Sean Tidey began a recovery. The lower order added some vital runs, especially Jack Tidey 27 not out as Reed posted 182 off of 44.4 overs. O’Brien and Lederman the pick of the opposition bowlers with three wickets apiece. Totteridge’s reply began quickly with the openers taking the score to 37 inside 4 overs before Jack Tidey (9-0-36-1) bowled the skipper Miles and Ed Wharton (5.5-0-50-2) added Sellwood’s wicket four runs later (41-2). However a 94 partnership between former Northants batsman Ben Howgego and all rounder O’Brien began to take the match away from Reed. Three quick wickets; two from Toby Fynn (5-0-25-2) and one from Mitchell Cooper (5-0-25-1) gave Reed a slight glimmer of hope. Smith and Lederman eventually taking the visitors home by four wickets. RESULT: REED 182 ALL OUT 44.4 OVERS. (6 points) lost to TOTTERIDGE MILLHILLIANS 183 FOR 6 29.5 OVERS. (25 points) by 4 WICKETS. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.
