New Cup but familiar result as Reed win the revamped Keatley Cup competition

What a day, what a result! Reed entered a young side representing a range of the club’s sides for The Keatley Cup’s reformed format. Reed’s six players were Joe Graves, Sean Tidey, Tom Walsingham, Rhodri Hughes, Rob Lankester and team skipper Marcus J.E. Baker. The new format asked each side to bowl five overs, one over each from every fielder except the wicket-keeper. Reed fielded first in the first game against Thriplow and kept them to 42. Two wickets went to the deadly Rhodri Hughes and two stumpings and a run out to Baker with the gloves. Learning from what they had seen Reed saw that it was a slow and low pitch and that good running was more crucial to big hitting. Lankester and Tidey did the damage in chasing down the target easily. In the second match against the talented Lord’s Taverners Buccaneers, Reed found themselves chasing a total of 64. It proved too much as Reed finished twenty runs short. In the final round-robin encounter against hosts Royston CC, Reed openers Tidey and Lankester recorded a competition top score of 77 in their innings. More superb bowling restricted Royston and left them well short. This put Reed into the final. Reed faced-up against the Lord’s Taverners Buccaneers in the final, who were by far the most talented side on show. Baker won the toss and inserted the opposition. Sean Tidey bowled a fantastic opening over which conceded very few runs. Walsingham, Hughes and Graves followed up with some more good bowling. Key match goes against Reed 2nds

Third placed Reed II won the toss and batted first on a good Reed wicket. However, overhead conditions helped the bowlers and the Reed openers found the early stages hard going. Division leaders Dunstable showed why they were worthy of their position but eventually Richard Johnson started to find the gaps and runs started to come slowly but surely. However, Johnson’s (17) wicket followed soon after by two more saw Reed struggling at 54 for 3 from 24 overs. The innings found some life with the partnership of Marcus Martin and Marcus J.E. Baker who took their time to stabilise the situation. Waiting for the bad balls the two Cus’s put on 55 together and were just starting to look to lift the run rate when the Reed skipper departed for 32. Meanwhile, Baker hung around looking untroubled but was gradually tiring. Trying to rack up boundaries he picked out the deep wicket fielder for 45. Good knocks by Jack Caine (27) and Karl Ward (13*) helped Reed get to 171 for 8. A total perhaps that was perhaps below par but nonetheless a total that was defendable. The visiting openers were positive in the chase but break through wickets from Peter Tidey and Karl Ward made things interesting. Both Ward (1-32) and Tidey (1-50) slogged their guts out followed by Marcus Martin (2-25) but found that any pressure they tried to build was quickly released by some sloppy and lazy fielding un-worthy of Reed. Nevertheless things were tense and if the Reed bowlers could prise these wickets it would be a crucial win that could really open-up the division. Reed IIIs Suffer Another Defeat

Reed III's travelled across Herts to face bottom of the table Northwood Town II's. Northwood, batting first, got of to a good start, as Fozan Haji (68) and Ravi Ramawat (25) worked the bowling of Joe Graves (11-2-39-1) and Mike Robertson (6-0-33-0) Robertson struggled to find his line, and was soon replaced by Neil Haslam (15-5-31-2) who put pressure on the batsmen, eventually forcing an error Ramawat. Amish Unalkat (39) continued to push the total, until a flighter from Matt Naeem (6-0-47-2) had Fozan caught in the deep by Graves. Sumeet Khetia (4) was quickly dismissed, and the addition of Robert Willoughby to the attack (6-0-22-2) saw Amish and Tarang Katira (10) fall victim to his beguiling spin. After a brief display of confident strokes Muzammil Wasi was bowled by Graves, as Cheesewright (19) continued to plug away. Naeem picked up the wicket of Motiwala (6), through further flighty bowling. With Malik (1) and Cheesewright still at the crease, Northwood chose to declare on 235-7 from 51 overs. Reed's response began with less confidence as Rhodri Hughes (6) was dismissed by Parmar (10-2-21-1). Willoughby (22) and the youthful Mike Catt (38) began to build a partnership but the former was bowled by Wasi (5-0-24-1). Catt and Skipper Mike Robertson pushed on the total, hitting boundaries freely, however a lapse in concentration saw Robertson caught off the bowling of Khetia (12-1-50-3). Man of Match Martin bashes Baldock for a ton!

Reed 4th XI v Baldock 3rd XI at Freman Oval, 16th July 2016 Baldock won the toss and elected to bat on a warm summer afternoon at Freman. There was a healthy balance of youth and “experience” in the 4th XI today. The opening bowling pair of Matt Yates and Jack Childs restricted the run rate over the early overs, with Childs taking the wickets of an opener and the No 3 batsman. Jake Gifford, replaced Yates, but struggled to find line and length and was quickly replaced by Jack Wilkerson. He deserved a wicket with a dropped catch coming off his bowling. Unfortunately, at the drinks break Matt Yates had to retire from the field having taken a heavy blow on the ankle from a well struck shot. Meanwhile from the town end, Martin Johnson was again tying the batsmen down and finished with 2 - 58 from a 12-over spell. With batsmen risking quick singles, their opening bat (who had spent a fidgety 30+ overs at the crease) was run out on 49 by quick reactions and a direct hit from Jack Childs. Alan Ward replaced Jack Wilkerson and finished with 3 wickets to his name. Johnson took a good catch on the boundary off the bowling of Hughes (2 overs, 1 for 13). Baldock batted for 42 overs, finishing on 191-9. Reed’s captain for the day, Bill Mansfield showed prowess behind the stumps with two of the younger players, Ben Mansfield and Kieran McKinna being very active in the outfield. Headlines – 16th / 17th July

SATURDAY: The "double-header" against Dunstable did not go too well. The Firsts playing away scored 166 in reply to the host's 264 thereby losing by 98 runs. Sean Tidey and Ed Wharton each made 29 and Ian Osborne who earlier had taken 3 wickets also scored 31. On the Green, Dunstable II overhauled Reed Seconds' 171 for 8 losing only 5 wickets in the process. MJE Baker had top-scored with 45 and Marcus Martin took 2 of the wickets. The Thirds lost to Northwood Town by 65 runs. There were 2 wickets apiece for Neil Haslam, Rob Willoughby and Matt Naeem but the run-chase petered-out on 170 which included an assured 38 by Mike Catt and a harder-hit 31 by Mike Robertson. Baldock III remain top of Regional Division B East despite losing to the Reed Fourth XI at the Freman Oval. Making 191 for 9, (Alan Ward claiming 3 wickets), Baldock were then unable to prevent Martin Johnson leading the charge with a splendid ton and the 4ths winning by 7 wickets. SUNDAY: The Waitrose-sponsored Club Open Day for Colts was on the Green during the morning coinciding with the last practice sessions of the season. Thanks to all the Coaches, Managers and helpers plus a big Thank You to Cilla for her organisation and BBQ. In the afternoon Reed participated in the Keatley Cup which this season was in the form of a Six-a-side round-robin competition. The venue was the Therfield Cricket Ground. After winning against the organising hosts, Royston CC, and Thriplow CC, but losing against the Lord's Taverners Buccaneers, the Reed sextet claimed a place in the final against the Buccaneers. Stevenage bat out for tame draw

On Saturday July 9th Reed 1st XI hosted Stevenage 1st XI in the Herts Saracens League Championship. Stevenage won the toss and asked Reed to bat first. Reed got off to a solid start, with brothers James (45) and William Heslam (117) putting on 105 for the first wicket in 26 overs. Rob Lankester (39) came in at number 3 giving William good support and taking the score to 195 before he fell in the 46th over. A procession of batsmen then came and went trying to up the scoring rate, with R.Hassan taking 6 for 69 with his leg breaks. Tom Greaves then declared after 58.5 overs with the score on 258 for 8. In reply Stevenage suffered a dreadful start with Ed Wharton and Ian Osborne each taking wickets in the first two overs leaving Stevenage 8 for 2 off 2. However, this brought Hassan (111 not out) to the crease who rebuilt the innings ably supported by Gittens-Brown (62). Tom Greaves bowled a marathon spell of 19 overs 2 maidens, 2 for 59 and kept the Stevenage scoring rate down. But with the fall of Gittens-Brown, Stevenage opted to play for the draw and after 58 overs settled for 217 for 8. Reed Crash Out in Thriller!

Herts and Beds champions Reed crashed out of the 2016 National Village Cup on Sunday losing off the last ball of their match against Kent Champions Sibton Park. 7 Wickets down and needing just a single off the last ball to clinch the win, Reed batsman Karl Ward struck the ball into the covers but his despairing charge to achieve the required run was foiled by good Sibton fielding and the stumps were broken with Ward an agonising 2 yards short of completing the run, and the win for Reed! After a delayed start because of rain, things had started well for Reed as they won the toss and asked the men of Kent to bat first. Toby Fynn and Ward opened the bowling and both extracted some movement from the pitch in the early overs, but belligerent Sibton opener Bingham struck out lustily from the start and rode his luck being dropped twice off difficult hard hit chances in between a succession of boundaries. Opener Hickmott went for 10 with the score 53 in the 12th over. It was here that Reeds luck ran out and controversy raged as Sibton No 3 Allon, on 0 at the time, survived a very confident Reed shout for caught behind. which was not supported by the visiting Umpire. The game moved on and two runs later the dangerous Bingham was well caught in the deep by Toby Fynn off Tom Greaves for a hard hit 40. The Sibton Innings then lost its momentum as Greaves (9 Overs 1 – 37) and Ward (9 Overs 1-25) bowled tight spells and at the halfway mark the visitors score was poised at 82-2 off 20 overs. Baker’s Boys Bully Blues

Reed gave a dominant performance at Fairfield Hall against Knebworth Blue. Having been inserted, Reed suffered two cheap losses but were nonetheless making runs as team captain Marcus J.E. Baker led from the front. In a welcome return to form he played in a fluid and positive style racking up boundaries whilst rotating the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking over. 17-year-old Zac Conley was also finding form in an aggressive display of his strength. Putting the ball over the rope with ease he racked up runs quickly. His precise and patient striking showed a growing maturity in his batting. With 15 overs left in the first innings Baker retired having brought up three figures with Conley (71) following suit two overs later. With the score well over 200 and still plenty of overs left to get through Rhodri Hughes and Joe Graves took on the task of adding to the host’s misery. Hughes ran quickly between the wickets and put the bad balls away and had soon enough joined the 50 plus club before also retiring. Graves meanwhile finished undefeated on 43 for the second week in a row. His ever-improving batting will soon see him making a big score. Reed's final score of 314 for 3 was never in any real danger of being overtaken but the young Reed side nonetheless maintained focus. Eventually the wickets started to fall. Jack Childs took two fantastic catches at short mid-wicket to go with his own two wickets. Sam Rice playing his first match of the season lost no time in taking wickets finishing with three. Keatley Cup 2016 (Six-a-side competition)

Organised by Royston CC, this year's event will be a Six-a-side competition on Sunday 17th July at Therfield Cricket Ground. Start at 12.30 with the final finishing around 1700hrs. The format will be a round robin with the 2 highest placed sides playing a final. The four sides are Royston, Thriplow, Lord's Taverners and Reed. Each match will consist of 5 overs, each bowler only bowling a maximum of 1 over. There will be bonus points for number of runs scored / wickets taken as well as a win.
