Lord’s hopes dashed in last over drama

Cricket Report: National Village Cup Competition. Herts and Beds Final. Lord's hopes dashed as Reed are knocked out of Village Cup in Area Final after last over drama. Reed Cricket Club hosted Langleybury in the area final of The National Village Competition on Sunday June 14th 2015. Reed suffered from injuries and unavailability and gave a number of youngsters a chance to prove their worth in this important game in front of a good crowd. Langleybury won the toss and chose to bat on a damp overcast day on a wicket that had been covered for the past two days. Runs were not easy to come by for Reed and they lost regular wickets after an opening partnership of 43 off eleven overs between James Heslam and Mitchell Cooper. In the next eleven overs Reed lost Cooper, Jackson, Greaves and Smith for 50 runs and looked to be in trouble. However the dangerous Sean Tidey joined James Heslam and scored 25 in a partnership of 28 with Heslam. However with the loss of Tidey and then Heslam for a fine 66 the Reed innings lost momentum and Reed were bowled out in 37.3 overs for 156 leaving Langleybury to chase a target thought to be at least 50 runs below par. Tom Walsingham opened the bowling for Reed and was immediately successful, bowling Manzor for 3 and bowling his first 5 overs for only 8 runs. However, Amin and W.Oxley then settled and took the score to 73 for 1 after 17 overs. A Langleybury victory seemed a formality. Nevertheless, spinners Tom Greaves (9-0-28-1) and Reece Fitzgerald (9-0-29-2) then put the brakes on and Reed looked to be back in the hunt. Karl Ward (6.4-0-25-1) [...]

Reed secure hard fought win

Reed returned to winning ways with a challenging and hard fought win over 3rd placed Flitwick on Saturday. With the pitch looking fairly green after a mixed week of weather Flitwick won an important toss and made advantage of the lively wicket and new ball reducing Reed to 47-3 after 12 overs despite Rich Wharton’s 21. The situation didn’t get much better for Reed when this became 73-5. Australian quick Jordan Leiman and Edward Sharpe each picking up 2 wickets for the home side. Reed did recover to 112-5 before Greaves fell for 21 just as he was starting to break free. All this time Reed stalwart Chris Jackson (61 not out) was superbly holding the Reed innings together for the 2nd time this season and he continued to do this receiving some support from Reeds lower order. This enabled Reed to bat their overs and post a below par score of 186 all out in 48.5 overs but one which at least gave them hope. Reed needed early wickets and that is what they got from the destructive Jack Tidey (10-2-26) who bowled with pace and accuracy. Greaves was brought into the attack early by skipper Heslam with the hope of removing danger man George Thurstance and when he duly obliged with a beautiful delivery well stumped by Wharton Flitwick were in trouble at 34-3 which included a wicket for Tom Walsingham who opened up with Tidey. Although Reed had taken early wickets on what was now a decent batting wicket and quickening outfield the home side probably remained favourites particularly with the likes of minor counties player Higginbotham at the crease. However, Tidey had other ideas removing the beds batsman for 1. At [...]

Young Reed show resilience in the heat

The heat was out in force and it was more a day for working on ones tan rather than chasing a cricket ball around The Green, which was what in store for the very young Reed side. Despite the difficult conditions Reeds youngster stood up to the challenge with great enthusiasm. At one point Reeds opponents Outlaws could easily gone way past 300 so for the home side to restrict them to 253 is a testament to their hard efforts. George Garrott had started coming down the hill and had the ball hopping in along way and picked up the wickets of both Outlaws openers. Meanwhile, coming up the hill Tom Nussey followed by Jonathan and then George Adams each gave a good try but the visitors middle order started to plunder runs. Sharma and Brennon both reached their half centuries and were set to continue when Ed Kershaw and his well flighted leg spin removed Sharma for 64. Coupled with Tom Walsingham’s own wicket Reed started to fight back. Toby Emes, also bowling leggies, then ripped through Outlaws lower order picking up four wickets for just 16. In response Reed knew that good partnerships were critical to chasing down what usually would be only a par score. Paul Garrott and Tom Nussey set the perfect example and platform. The experience of Garrott mixed with the eagerness of the young Nussey produced a 55 run opening stand. Unfortunately after Garrott was bowled for 22 Nussey was shortly afterwards run out for a fantastic 30. George Adams gave a valiant attempt at number 4 but was also bowled. Reeds strong middle order then started to improve the situation first in the guise of the Rob Lankaster, [...]

Fantastic team performance keeps Reed unbeaten

Reed IV's welcomed fellow early season pacesetters Welwyn V's to Freman College. After winning the toss, skipper Lloyd Bowman opted to bowl and at first and it appeared to be the wrong decision when Welwyn raced to 51-0 from the first 6 overs. Zac Conley (6-0-23-1) made the breakthrough, before the persistence of Ed Kershaw finally paid off and he got his rewards taking two wickets in quick succession including the wicket of the dangerous opener Skiff for 47, following a magnificent catch in the gully by Bill Mansfield. By this point Reed had begun to swing the momentum and Neill Haslam (9-0-27-2) and Steve Hughes (7-1-30-2) both bowled well and didn't allow the batsman to settle as Reed tore through Welwyn's middle order. Jonathan Adam (2-0-9-2) took his first wicket in adult cricket , including removing the skipper Molyneux for 31 with his first ball. His second quickly followed after a great catch by Rhodri Hughes in the covers. Toby Emes took the final wicket as Welwyn were bowled out for 149 from 31.5 overs. In reply Reed chased the total down in 24 overs. Zac Conley (43) and Rhodri Hughes (46*) continued their fine form. Whilst contributions from John Kershaw (15) Bill Mansfield (8) and Lloyd Bowman (5*) ensured Reed IV's continued their unbeaten run in the league.

1st XI, NVC; Mutucumarana bowls remarkable spell

On Sunday Reed travelled through the rain to play Datchworth in the 3rd round of the Davidstow National Village Cup. Reed won the toss and decided to bowl in the soggy conditions. Openers Tom Walsingham and the bulky Jack Tidey were struggling to get through their actions as they battled against the wet pitch. Tidey in particular was uncharacteristically wayward and was soon replaced by the part time medium pace of Alex Mutucumarana. Mitchell Cooper replaced Tom Walsingham and instantly made an impact taking the first wicket with the score on 57. Cooper was to end up with 3-10 in 4.3 overs, impressive, however the history books were about to be re-written at the other end. After 3.3 overs Mutucumarana had figures of 0-8 but what was to follow was nothing short of incredible. The efficient line and length bowling of Mutucumarana has never been his key attribute, with his runs at the top of the order being his most identifiable characteristic on the cricket field but he soon got into his stride and picked up his first wicket with he fourth ball of his fourth over after a good catch at gully by Tom Greaves. After slinging down a wide ball, Mutucumarana then took the wicket of Benton. Stroomer got off the mark with a 2 but was to be the next victim for the exuberant Mutucumarana with the last ball of the over. 3-10 from 4 overs. He returned, for the start of one of the most breathtaking overs in the history of the club. Mutucumarana, sauntering in, nipped one away off the pitch and hit Barrlett smack, bang in front of the stumps to collect his 4th wicket of the game. Another [...]

1st XI. Totteridge Batting proves too much

On Saturday Reed entertained a Totteridge Millhillians side that included former England spinner John Emburey. Reed lost the toss and were asked to field. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn opened the bowling but unfortunately could not find a breakthrough early on. Skipper James Heslam turned to spin and was immediately rewarded as Tom Greaves (10-1-45-3) picked up the wicket of Le Fort for 23. O'Brien joined Butterworth and together they built a partnership of 43 before Greaves struck again as O'Brien was caught by Heslam for 18. 78-2 became 84-3 as Greaves struck in his next over removing Butterworth LBW for 33. At this time, Totteridge had ex Derbyshire batsman Selwood and Mason. Selwood took charge scoring boundaries on a regular basis. Mason (5) was the next man to go lbw to Fynn. By this time Selwood was set and was well supported by Sutcliffe (9), Sogbudjar (10) Mahmood (9) and Fletcher (9 not out). Selwood finished 125 not out (18x4 2x6), a huge contribution as Totteridge finished 270-7 from their 50 overs. Reeds reply started well scoring 14 off the first over. However Reed were 19-1 in the third over as Sean Tidey was removed for 9. James Heslam was joined by Tom Greaves as they tried to build a big partnership however Greaves was dismissed after before bowled by Mahmood (9.2-0-43-3) for 6. 34-2. Heslam (18) was dismissed the next over after being adjudged stumped and Reed were now 47-3. Stuart Smith and Chris Jackson set about rebuilding Reeds innings, this didn't go to plan as Jackson was brilliantly caught and bowled by Butterworth for 7. Smith was joined by the big hitting local lad Mitchell Cooper. Together the put on 49 for [...]

3rd XI. Barlow and Morss Battle Through the Town

Reed III's hosted Northwood Town II's in the 4th league game of the season. Northwood skipper Sumeet chose to bat on what looked to be the usual Freeman road. Opener Fozam (0) quickly fell victim to the deadly bowling of Graves (9-2-26-1), while no. 3 Dawson-Jones (1) quickly falling prey to Robertson, both to the hands of keeper Naeem. Shah (10) soon became Robertson's second victim and two overs later Vanker (0) was also defeated. Rizri (18) made a small stand until the intelligent bowling of Morss gained Reed another scalp, while Khota (11) was also trapped by the wiles of Morss (10-5-12-2) George Garrott (9-1-41-0) supported Morss with some difficult swing bowling, while G. Stuart worried the batsmen with nagging out swing (3-0-12-0), but the run rate steadil increase as Lal and opener Ravi pushed up the total. It was Barlow that finally made the breakthrough bowling Ravi for a respectable 65. This brought Malik to the crease who attacked the bowling with vigour, until Barlow took a solid catch off the bowling of Robertson(10-0-41-4). Daly then fell victim to Barlow, which left Furmenger (1*) and Lal (29) at undefeated when the 50 over were up. Reed set off steadily in pursuit racking up 46 before Baker (11) fell to Captain Sumeet. Robert Willoughby was quickly dispatched by the pacey bowling of Daly while brother Kieran (9) was bowled by Dawson. The Reed collapse continued when Barlow's (71) graceful innings ended at the hands of Furmenger and Robertson (11) edged a ball to the keeper once again from the bowling of Furmenger (10-1-41-2). It was the solid strokes of Naeem and Garrott that brought Reed back into the game. Daly's (9-0-46-2) second wicket came [...]

2nd XI. Teamwork the tonic for delighted Martin

Reed II’s bounced back from last weekend’s disappointing defeat to Ickleford by thumping Welwyn garden City III’s in what Captain Marcus Martin has called “a good a team performance as I’ve seen from us”. On what proved to be a very tricky wicket, Martin won the toss and perhaps mistakenly, opted to bat first on the drying surface. Richard Johnson and Phil Frenay opened up for the visitors and negotiated what proved to be an extremely difficult new ball period very well. With the ball leaping off of a length, it wasn’t long before Frenay was calling for his helmet. Johnson (22) was the first to depart as the pair put on 43 for the loss of the first wicket. When Frenay followed the next ball for 20, owing to a stunning catch at midwicket, Reed were in a spot of bother all of a sudden. Matt Bowles and skipper Martin then calmed things down as they looked to build upon the solid start afforded them by the openers. With the ball still misbehaving, Martin and Bowles had to weather some hostile bowling early doors. They moved the score on to 79 when Bowles was harshly adjudged LBW for 9. Marcus J.E. Baker (1) soon followed Bowles back to the butch as he was caught and Reed were again in trouble on 85-4. However Martin and incoming batsman Jack Caine then took over. The pair mixed solid defence with good, strong attacking shots as they began to take advantage of a flattening pitch and an older ball. Caine was striking the ball in magnificent fashion whilst Martin became more fluent with every over. They batted brilliantly and soon had Reed motoring as the total passed [...]

4th XI. Rhodri Hughes back in form as 4th XI win again

Reed IV's maintained there unbeaten start to the league season with a good win away to Hatfield Hyde III's. After winning the toss, Reed bowled first and in just the second over of the afternoon Matt Yates calmly collected one which was chipped back at him for the first wicket. Two balls later Matt Giblin (9-1-26-1) got in on the act, and when Matt Yates (6-1-17-2) got another, Reed were in ascendancy with Hatfield Hyde 10-3. Hudson (21) and Whitton rebuilt the innings before Zac Conley (9-1-22-4) took two in two balls following two catches behind by wicketkeeper Lloyd Bowman. Reed were impressive in the field and runs were hard to come by and as Hatfield tried to up the run-rate Conley took his third wicket following a great catch by young Jonny Adam. It must be said, Whitton (57) batted superbly before Conley again claimed his fourth wicket, and then Alan Ward (8-2-21-1) restricted Hatfield's tail as they finished on 138-8. Following the interval, Rhodri Hughes and Bill Mansfield opened up for Reed and both looked comfortable from the offset and were regularly punishing mistakes in the field to keep the scoreboard ticking over nicely. With the scoreboard at 46-0 Mansfield was the first to depart following the introduction of Whitton which brought the returning Sam Deville to the crease. Deville was lost for 8, however Rhodri Hughes remained and soon brought up his first 50 of the season and was well supported by Alan Ward (20) who squashed any doubt of victory. Reed chased down the total from just 23 overs finishing on 139-3 with both Hughes (54*) and Conley (9*) not out , to ensure Reed IV's claimed maximum points for the [...]

Reed Beaten by Big Spending Bay

Big spending Botany Bay got the better of Reed 1xi in a top of the table clash on Saturday. Reed won the toss and elected to bowl with overcast conditions and a helpful looking wicket. Things were going to plan when rain stopped play at 22-1 after 7 overs thanks to a good wicket by Jack Tidey well held by Chris Jackson at 1st slip. However, the players were then unexpectedly off the pitch for over nearly two hours including an early tea. When play resumed the outfield was soaked making it difficult for the Reed bowlers to get much movement out of the ball. Botany Bay’s key batsman got themselves in and then began to cut loose with Reeds performance a little below par not helped by the conditions. Ex-Northants bastman Ben Howgego (110*) and Cambridgeshire batsman Paul Summerskill (70) did the damage and the Bay ended their reduced overs innings on 214-2 in 38 overs. Tidey (8-1-34) and Tom Walsingham (8-0-15) were the pick of the Reed bowlers on a difficult afternoon. On a thick outfield the chase was always going to be tough for Reed. Sean Tidey and Mitchell Cooper opened with the hope of getting Reed off to a good start so the middle order could hopefully build on that momentum. This happened in part with Sean Tidey (20) hitting the first over for 20 but then he and Cooper (6) had departed by the 2nd over. James Heslam and Rich Wharton (14) looked to keep the momentum going whilst not lose any more wickets but things gradually became more difficult as the Botany Bay Bowlers bowled with good discipline and some movement. The game was in the balance at 50-2 [...]
