Vital 9th wicket partnership gives the 3rd XI a defendable total!

Whilst the hosts’ captain, Mark Parkinson, was at the crease, Met Police Bushey were on-course to overhaul Reed’s total of 167. When he departed, caught by Sam Rice off a skyer, for 39, the remaining wickets soon followed. It illustrated how vital Reed’s ninth wicket partnership had been. In their innings, Reed’s number 10, Matt Yates had contributed only 2 not out of a forty-run stand with skipper Maseeh Naeem, but in such a confident and competent way, that without his support, Reed would probably have been all-out for 130 and well within range of Met Police Bushey. Earlier when Reed batted, the Willoughby brothers had set-off at good pace until Rob fell for 12. Fynn then scored 19 taking the total to 60, but 3 quick wickets left Reed reeling at 67 for 4, and then Kieran Willoughby was bowled for 28. Peter Baker and Maseeh Naeem quelled the route and added 40 before Baker lost his off stump. By this time, Naeem, the long-standing captain who has overseen successive promotions from Division 11, and has been an ever present Third XI player since its creation eight seasons ago, was in fine form, alternating between hard-hit boundaries and air-shots, but with the loss of two more wickets he had to re-think his strategy when batting with young Yates as he carefully picked-off boundaries each over and farmed the strike. Naeem finally fell for a well-crafted 63. And an all-out total of 167 was certainly defendable. James Hooper was making a welcome return and opened the bowling with left-armer, Yates. A well-judged caught & bowled by Hooper accounted for MPB’s wicket-keeper / batsman, Stevenson, but the second wicket was a long time coming until an [...]

Reed on the verge of Premier League Status

After Saturdays comprehensive win produced a seasons “double” over Knebworth Park CC, Reed find themselves guaranteed of finishing in 2nd position in the Saracens Herts Cricket League Championship Division. Table topping Hertford are assured of the title whilst Reed are 84 Points clear of 3rd Club Flitwick with just 2 League matches left to play. This position means that Reed, as League Runner Up are assured of the “Play Off” position and so on Saturday 6th September they will play at Home against the 2nd bottom side in the Herts Premier League with the prize being a 2015 Season Herts Premier League position. At the present moment this match seems likely to be against Sawbridgeworth CC or Letchworth CC. A move into the Herts Premier League would cap a memorial rise for Reed from a mid division Herts Village Cricket Club to playing in the very highest recreational Cricket League available to them, competing with the very best of the major town teams in Hertfordshire Cricket. To this can be added Reed’s National Village Cup win at Lords in 2012 and all this achieved with a side comprising mainly youngsters who have grown up through the Clubs junior ranks. Against Knebworth Reed skipper James Heslam won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first. Injuries have ravaged the Reed bowling ranks in recent weeks and Saturday saw ageing Reed stalwart Peter Tidey recalled to 1st Xl duty well into his 50’s and clearly the “Father of the side”! Opening the bowling with 18-year-old Tom Walsingham Tidey bowled a very respectable spell of 10 Overs 1-26 whilst Walsingham returned 2-28 from his 10 Overs. Reed had Knebworth on the ropes at [...]

Division 10 side too good for the 4th XI

Having completed their 2014 League fixtures, Reed 4th XI hosted Ickleford 3rds in a Friendly at the Freman College Oval. The Division 10 side batted first with their openers comfortably putting-on 166 for the first wicket although it was only in the latter part of their partnership that they accelerated the run rate to 5 per over. Soon after, Owen Hughes returned for a second spell and ended with figures of 3 for 40 from 10 overs; Zac Conley was inexpensive conceding 28 runs from 9 overs whilst there was a wicket each for Ben Moody and Ollie Mansfield. Ickleford declared at 259 for 6 with half-centuries from Howard, Persey and S Norrington. Captain Peter Baker was caught off the first ball of Reed’s innings and a second wicket fell in that same first over. Josh Conley, 25, and Lloyd Bowman, 18, applied the sticking plaster as they took the score to 62 before both fell to consecutive deliveries from Webb who eventually finished with 5 for 32. After that Reed’s young players did their best to keep-out the Ickleford bowlers but wickets fell at regular intervals. Ben Moody made 10, Owen Hughes 14, and debutant Benji Mansfield a quick 8 by finding the boundary twice in two balls, but he was caught off the next delivery as Reed slipped to 109 all out. Reed IV lost to Ickleford III by 150 runs.

Reed promotion push back on track

Reed 1XI won a crucial 2nd vs 3rd game in the Hertfordshire Championship on Saturday. Reed captain James Heslam won the toss and elected to field to try to secure the win or if not allow his side the ability to play out for a draw if needed with hosts West Herts 33 points behind Reed before the start of the game. Reed opening bowlers Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn started off well restricting West Herts to 26-1 off 11 overs. However, the hosts recovered to 116-1 off 28 overs and looked well set for a decent score. This was despite the efforts of Hertfordshire Stags spinner Tom Greaves who bowled an excellent spell of 18-2-67 on a wicket offering very little once the new ball had gone. Although Reed now took wickets on occasions West Herts kept the board ticking over and gradually made their way to an imposing target of 275-8 off their 60 overs. Other wicket taking bowlers were Reed's other Hertfordshire Stags bowler Jack Tidey who bowled very well again picking up figures of 13-3-45, Sam Fairbrother with 5-2-28 and Alex Mutucamarana 9-1-41. Tom Walsingham also bowled well in his return to the 1st team bowling attack. Reed knew it was going to be difficult to chase the runs down against the renowned West Herts spin attack, particularly after a shower spiced the wicket up a little during the change between innings. However, they did get off to a solid start reaching 33-0 off 11 overs. At this point though both Heslams fell leaving Reed under pressure at 33-2. It was at this point that the game began to change as Alex Mutucamarana and Tom Greaves built a solid position for [...]

Robertson Rips through Langleybury 3’s

Reed skipper Maseeh Naeem won the toss and elected to field on the Freman College pitch, known to be batsman-friendly. Michael Robertson and Matt Giblin opened the bowling. The latter went for 14 off his first over, but quickly found his rhythm and bowled some economical lines, beating the bat on several occasions but with no reward. It was Robertson who did the damage to Langleybury's innings, after picking up the wickets of both openers, he went on to claim 5 wickets, ending with impressive figures of 14-4-52-5. Julian Fynn replaced Giblin, and also impressed. He picked up 3 wickets off his 10 over spell. Ian Roberts picked up the remaining wicket, continuing to impress as a reliable wicket taker for the 3rd team this season. Langleybury were reduced to 138/9, and it seemed Reed would have a fairly low score to chase. However a last wicket stand of 67 frustrated Reed's bowlers. Even the injured first-teamer, Kallum Ward was unable to take the final wicket. Langleybury finished on 203/9, a much higher total than anticipated. In reply, Reed opened the batting with the in-form Richard Barlow, and Matt Bowles. Both batted well, putting on 34 off the first 7 overs for the first wicket. Bowles was out caught for 15, having made a solid start to his innings. Richard Johnson came in at number 3, and batted well for his 18. Kallum Ward came in at 4, and played his usual aggressive game, hitting a quick 21 before getting caught on the boundary. Richard Barlow continued to play a solid innings, hitting multiple boundaries but lost his wicket one run short of his 50. The next two wickets fell cheaply, leaving Reed at 123/5 [...]

Rice and Emes put Woodcutters in a spin

With July making way for August Reed were looking for a Sunday win which had eluded them for the last few weeks. Reed hosted Woodcutters at the Green with captain Marcus J.E. Baker having no doubts about batting first having won the toss. This confident call was soon questioned as both of Reeds openers played on in the first two overs without scoring. Baker joined number 3 Fergus Martin at the wicket and the pair started the innings again. Both played freely and scored clean, precise shots making a partnership of fifty without much difficulty. However, just as Reed seemed to be stabilising things 3 wickets fell in quick succession including Martin (23) and Baker (28), leaving Reed struggling on 78 for 5. A partnership was very much called for and one was provided by Ben Moody and Jack Tidey, both showing their abilities as all-rounders. A controlled innings by Tidey, who took the lead, was supported fantastically by Moody. Both waited for the bad ball with patience and put pressure on the opposition with outstanding running. This running was best displayed in an all run 5 without any over throws, a superb feat. In 17 overs they added 113 runs when Moody fell for 41 just short of what would have been a well deserved maiden 50. Owen Hughes chipped in 7 but sacrificed his wicket for the cause looking for quick runs whilst Tidey closed in on three figures. Needing 11 from the last over he was only able to get one maximum away as Reed finished with a total of 229 for 7. Tidey’s 95 not out being a great demonstration of sensible batting. After teas Hughes once again opened coming down [...]

Storm proves to put Reed out of Village Cup!

Reeds National Village Cup dreams are over, for another year at least, after the forced replay of their National Village Cup Quarter Final saw them narrowly beaten by last years semi-finalists Dinton CC by 33 runs in a hard fought encounter in Buckinghamshire. 7 days earlier Reed had been in an excellent position to win the match and go through to the Cup Semi-Final. On a good batting wicket and fast outfield at Reed they had bowled and fielded in exemplary manner and had dismissed Dinton for just 168. At 4-0 with 39.5 overs remaining to score the 165 required for victory the skies had opened and a huge localised thunderstorm then washed out the match! The return match at Dinton on Sunday proved very different. On a bone dry ground and lightening outfield Dinton won the toss and again batted first. Smith and Massey got them off to a flying start with 52-0 registered in the first 8 overs and a massive score looming. However, Jack Tidey settled into a steady groove and first change bowler Tom Greaves also put the brakes on the scoring. Reed had to wait until the 15th over for the 1st wicket when Sean Tidey caught Massey for 42 off brother Jacks bowling. 2 relatively quick wickets followed as Dinton slid to 87 for 3 at the halfway 20 over mark. When Toby Fynn bowled Smith for 37 in the first over after drinks Dinton had slumped to 88-4 off 21 overs and Reed sensed the game was in their grasp. However, the last 18 overs of the match saw a dramatic swing in fortunes. Woodward and Roberts began to put together what proved to be a match winning [...]

Superb 10 wicket win by the 4th XI

Reed’s opening batsmen completed a no-nonsense victory by notching-up the required runs within just 13 overs. Set a target of 58, Freddy Stuart scored 42 not out and Rhodri Hughes, 14 not out, and with the addition of 4 sundries, reached 60 without loss. The match was over by mid-afternoon giving sufficient time to enjoy the fine teas that are a feature of Reed’s 3rd XI and 4th XI matches played at Freman College. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Stevenage had got off to a bad start when both openers had departed by the ninth delivery of the match. More were to follow soon after, and by the time the attack bowlers had completed their respective five-over spells which were shortened by skipper, Peter Baker, because of the boiling heat, Owen Hughes had taken 4 for 17 and Joe Graves, 3 for 17. There was no respite for the visitors. First, Sam Rice, (1 for 5), struck to bowl top-scoring, Shaw, (20), then left-armer, Matt Yates, (2 for 16), returned the final two batsmen to the pavilion with an all-out score of 57. Reed took every chance offered by the batsmen, and it appears that everyone with a surname of either Stuart or Hughes were the beneficiaries. Owen Hughes caught two, as did Freddy Stuart; Graham Stuart and Rhodri Hughes caught one each. In response, Stevenage’s opening bowlers, Bagshaw and Allen, did their utmost, but Reed’s victory was comprehensive.

The pitch was the winner!

Reed IV have been steadily accumulating points in the League largely because opposing clubs have conceded matches. Not an ideal situation for those wishing to play cricket so it was welcome that this match against Hertford’s 5th XI was actually played-out on the field. Reed never came to terms with the unpredictable bounce of the Aspenden village green pitch and their first four batsmen all succumbed to the excellent bowling of 12-year-old Jack Timms who in his amazing five-over spell had figures of four for four! The young Matt Riddle opened the bowling with him and although not taking a wicket also had economic figures of 0 for 11 from his five overs. Two other Colts, Hugh Cavener and Max Lawrance, also took three wickets each when it was their turn to bowl and Reed’s innings ended at 78 all-out with Chris West top-scoring with 18, the only batsman to reach double figures on what is a relatively small ground. Deciding to begin the reply before tea, Hertford’s top order also wilted in the sultry conditions and when the interval came after 15 overs they were at a precarious 28 for 6. Owen Hughes, 3 for 9, and Joe Graves, 3 for 17, inflicting the damage. The youngsters, Max Lawrance and Jack Timms, then simply showed everyone how they should have coped with the conditions and added runs without any due concern. A couple of chances went begging, but these two batted very well and confidently by putting together an undefeated fifty partnership which overhauled Reed’s total in only a further ten overs.

Storm puts Reeds Village Cup dreams on hold!

Reeds National Village Cup dreams were dampened late on Sunday afternoon when their National Quarter Final match with Buckinghamshire Champions Dinton CC was cruelly washed away by one of the fiercest downpours seen at Reed in many a long year. The match had reached the halfway point on a warm and mainly sunny afternoon but as the players enjoyed a sumptuous traditional Cricket Tea in the Reed Pavilion the sky darkened and menacing storm clouds gathered. Batting second Reeds reply did start but as Reed skipper James Heslam smoothly struck the first ball to the mid wicket boundary for 4 the rain started and the players and Umpires fled the field, unfortunately never to return to bowl another ball! Earlier, with the magnificent Reed ground looking an absolute picture, a crowd of around 350 had witnessed a hard fought and high quality encounter. Dinton having won the toss chose to bat first and their openers exhibited a calm confidence and played some fluent strokes. The Reed opening attack of Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn however stuck to their task and supported by the usual incredibly efficient Reed ground fielding runs were hard to come by. In the 6th Over Toby Fynn induced an outside edge from opener Woodward and Sean Tidey snaffled the catch 11-1. In Fynns next over No 3 Gibbins was bowled for 4 and when his replacement Massey was also caught behind, by Tidey, Dinton were in trouble at 27-3 off 11.2 overs. Meanwhile opener Smith had looked solid and assured and joined by No 5 Burrows the pair started constructing a solid recovery. At the 20 over halfway mark in the visitors innings the score stood at 74–3, honours now fairly [...]
