Rottingdean

Reed into the National stages of the Persimmon Village Cup for the first time since 2008, travelled to Rottingdean on the East Sussex coast.Winning the toss captain Lee Johnson had no hesitation in inserting the hosts. His decision proved the right one as both openers were quickly dispatched back to the pavillion with only 21 on the board, Lee Johnson and Jack Tidey with the wickets, younger brother Sean Tidey taking both wickets caught behind. It got no better for the home team as Johnson removed Corrigal and J Grantham to leave Rottingdean stareing down the barrell at 33 for 4. After a brief respite Chris Peckett and Ed Garrott combined to dismiss Clarke (52 for 5). It took a sixty run partnership by M Grantham and Shepherd to start to bring some respectability to the East Sussex League's total but further inroads by Peckett and wiley off-spinner Tom Greaves meant Rottingdean were 130 for 8 with just three overs of their allotted forty left. Some lusty hitting by the late order batsmen Bickmore and Smith left Rottingdean on 153 for 8 at the close of their innings. Lee Johnson 3-26, Chris Peckett 2-27 and Tom Greaves 2-38 the main wicket takers.Reed openers Tom Greaves and Ed Garrott got the visitors off to a great start, Garrott playing the anchor role to Greaves shot maker. 74 was made before Garrott was bowled by Potter for 15, Karl Ward went quickly and Reed was left on 76 for 2. Stuart Smith, hero of the team in their last round victory over North Mymms came to join Greaves, and they together began to build an imposing partnership, just as it looked as Reed were going to throttle [...]

North_Mymms

Reed progressed to the national stages of the National Village Cup by beating North Mymms by 8 wickets in the Regional Final on Sunday. Skipper James Heslam lost the toss and found him and his bowlers being asked to take the new ball. Lee Johnson (1-35) and Jack Tidey (1-30) opened up for Reed and instantly made use of the new ball by injecting some bounce out of the pitch. North Mymms openers Wynne and Clemants batted sensibly and moved the ball around well, picking up singles along with some nice cricket shots. It was Johnson who got the first wicket fro Reed, beating Wynne for pace and bounce and Sean Tidey taking the catch behind the stumps. Saxeby was next to follow, leaving North Mymms on 60-2. Carter and Clemants then took it upon themselves to rebuild the innings, putting on 61 for the third wicket. The introduction of the in form Chris Peckett (5-31) however saw the end of Clemants, and this followed by a flurry of wickets within the middle order, leaving the lower order to pick up singles in the aim to build a defendable total. On the final delivery of the innings, Peckett trapped Davies LBW to top a fine bowling display by Reed.In reply Reed got off ot the worst possible start losing Heslam first ball of the innings and Tom Greaves in the 2nd over. At 5-2, the tails of the North Mymms players were up sensing a victory. However Chris Jackson and Stuart Smith had other ideas. The pair saw off the new ball, and patiently moved the ball around the park looking to rebuild the innings and build a platform to win the game. Smith reached [...]

Preston Away

Reed played their third fixture of the weekend against Hitchin based Preston. The first and second team unfortunately tasted defeat in their opening Hertfordshire league fixtures on the Saturday but Richard Barlow took a strong team featuring players from various XI's for the Sunday friendly fixture there. Having scored 74 for the second team on the Saturday the ball was thrown to Mitchell Cooper to begin the bowling and he made it a weekend to remember with a devastating opening spell that accounted for the first four batsman. Barlow could not have hoped for a better start with Preston toiling on 9 for 4. Cooper was supported by young County bowler Walsingham who showed maturity beyond his age to end with figures of 0-8 from six overs. The ball was then given to J. Tidey who had bowled from the same end on Saturday. He disposed of the Preston captain and ran close to Coopers four wicket haul with 3-10. Preston stuttered to a respectable 146 all out courtesy of some lusty blows by Hill (67). Wheeler (1-13) and Peckett (1-17) were the other Reed wicket takers and bowled subsequently bowled very productively. Matt Bowles followed up his hundred against Barley by importantly running out Preston's last batsman to give Reed every chance of chasing the 147 needed for victory. Many people may well have assumed that opening pair McKechnie and Greaves would not get Reed off to a productive reply as both were treated to an array of hot and cold food at tea-time and stumbled out somewhat uncomfortably to face the first ball. Six overs later those fears were unfounded as the pair bludgeoned 42 without loss. Greaves (25) scored what can only be [...]

Woodcutters

Light showers were on the cards for the friendly fixture against Woodcutters at the Green and it was during a brief interlude that the toss was won by the visiting captain who elected to insert Reed.Opening for the hosts was Marcus J.E. Baker and Mathew Naeem who played the supporting role as Baker played in a care free fashion, swinging the bat hard and achieving positive results. Baker plundered ten fours and four sixes but in the eighteenth over as he took Reed from 99 to 117 he was caught behind for 82. After drinks Matt Naeem, now joined by Rob Willoughby, came out of his shell and notched up a few boundaries of his own. He was caught trying to up the run rate for a well played 44, meanwhile Willoughby was caught for 31 having scored in an aggressive fashion. In the closing over Masseh Naeem smashed 18, well supported by Jack Caine who made 7 not out. Reed closed on a competitive 229 for 5.After tea Reed made early inroads as Neil Haslam (8-1-32-2) and Joe Graves (6-0-42-2) took wickets thanks to a catch by Rob Willoughby as well as one from Keeper M.J.E. Baker who also took a tidy leg side stumping. However, despite the good start Woodcutters still found the boundary often and a partnership by Bartsch and Berdes (89*) all but got them home, Jack Caine (5-036-1) removing Bartsch (66) before the end.

Theydon Bois

On what turned out to be a damp and drizzly timed game Reeds Sunday Seconds fielded a youthful eleven playing with 6 of the under 15 squad as well as a couple under 18s. However, the young side certainly showed their abilities playing away to hosts Theydon Bois in Essex whose own eleven also had several young players. The hosts had won the toss and inserted Reed. They had perhaps reckoned on taking early wickets and putting pressure on Reed but the opening pair of Marcus J.E. Baker and Dominic McOmish put pay to that plan. With a constant drizzle now in the air Baker and McOmish played superb innings taking their time to get the measure of the bowlers whilst keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Going at just over 4 an over they put on 141 together when Baker was given out LBW for 69 (11x4s) with McOmish following the next over for 57. This could have given Theydon the opportunity they had sought but they had no such luck as Cemal Ramadam began to knock the bowling about notching up 27 in just 6 overs. Lloyd Bowman chipped in with 7 before Ben Walker (11*) and Greg Marshall (15*) finished off the Reed innings as Peter Baker declared with the score on 213 for 4 from 42 overs. The second innings was short lived as the drizzle became heavier and finally saw the players seeking shelter. However, this was not before a superb 14 overs which saw opener Chris Marshall (6-1-16-0) trouble the batsmen and Joe Graves knocking the off peg out the ground three times to claim three superb wickets for just 16.Had the rain stayed away then it could well have developed into [...]

Langleybury

On Sunday Reed entertained division one Langleybury in the quarter finals of the National Village Cup. Reed captain James Heslam won the toss and elected to chase on what was a decent looking Reed wicket. The visitors started reasonably well but Reed weren’t letting them get away. The game was well balanced with Langleybury 43-0 after 12 overs, when the impressive Lee Johnson (3-36) made the breakthrough as the dangerous Amin (32) fell going for one big shot too many, Ed Garrott taking an excellent catch at Mid off. Johnson then took two more wickets in his next two overs and supported by the reliable Graham Wilson who went for just 33 in his 9 overs they put the game firmly in the balance with the visitors 68-3 after 17 overs. Number 5 Channer (39) however then joined opener R Oxley (72) and they took Langleybury to 150 for 3 after 33 overs. This was a good position for the visitors but they had still not got away completely and with an excellent last 7 overs Reed managed to restrict them to just 190-5 from their 40 overs. Spinners Garrott (1-43) and Greaves (1-38) bowled nicely and Jack Tidey produced an impressive last two overs. In reply Reed started slowly against the useful Langleybury openers who took the early wickets of Greaves (6) and Ward (8) leaving them on 30-2 after 11 overs. However, this brought Smith to the crease and he and Heslam (38) went about improving the situation for the home side. They did just this and at 97-2 after 24 overs the platform had been set for a push for victory. However the rate still had to be upped so it was unfortunate [...]

Therfield

Reed’s Sunday seconds was primarily made up of colts when they played away in their friendly match against neighbours Therfield.Therfield batted first and had made a big score of 246 for 9, thanks mostly to opener P. Leary (80) and J. Harper (68*). Christian Martin (5-1-46-2) and Ben Walker (8-0-40-0) had opened the bowling for Reed but struggled to find consistency as Therfield made a good start. But Martin struck twice before a third wicket fell to a sharp run out by A.J. Burnell. Rhodri Hughes was then introduced and the young leg spinner soon began to make inroads, he bowled a fantastic spell finishing with impressive figures of 8 overs 4 wickets for 34. Meanwhile, Marcus J.E. Baker (5-0-37-1) had taken some punishment but kept some dignity by taking the wicket of Bradfield (5) thanks to a catch by Walker. Josh Conley (5-1-21-1) also had a turn with the ball and bowled nicely in his spell. Despite the odd chance going down and the occasional miss-field, the young Reed side had done well in the field and could quite easily have been chasing a bigger total. There were catches each for John Kershaw, M.J.E. Baker, Walker and Rob Willoughby who claimed three. In response Reed started well with Peter Baker and M.J.E. Baker making 47 together before the elder was caught for 15. John Kershaw then came to the crease as he and Baker again frustrated the hosts by making a long partnership. Baker looked in fine form but was unexpectedly bowled on the first ball after drinks for 68. Kershaw (18) followed soon after but Rob Willoughby took over the Reed reply and struck some powerful shots. He was supported by under 15 Ian [...]

Southgate Compton

On what was the only fixture of six to be played by a Reed side on a very wet weekend, the Sunday second eleven hosted Southgate Compton at the Green. Peter Baker won the toss and knowing that he was leading a young side elected to insert the stronger opposition.Joe Graves (5-0-38-1) opened down the hill and Chris Marshall (5-1-14-0) up. Early runs were made by Sanjay (18) and L. Frame until Sanjay was caught by Ed Worby at point. A second wicket fell soon after when Josh Conley at square leg ran round and threw down the stumps at the non strikers end punishing the visitors for some poor calling. Just before drinks Mitchell Cooper (6-2-15-2) was introduced to try and slow the run rate and take the key wicket of L. Frame who by know had passed his 50 and was working his way towards 100.However, it was the wicket of Shah (23) that Cooper took thanks to a catch behind before bowling Brandon (1). Young Jack Caine proved to be the most accurate of the bowlers keeping a tight line but was unfortunate not to take a wicket. In the final overs Ed Worby took 3 wickets for 32 including that of L. Frame (103) thanks to a catch by substitute fielder Scott Caine who was on for Rob Willoughby who went off after a nasty blow to the nose.In the second innings Peter Baker (24) and Mitchell Cooper (14) opened knowing that a good start was needed if Reed were to be successful in chasing their target of 221. However, with the score on 40 an in-swinger from Raghunathan (8-0-30-3) bowled Mitchell Cooper which began a small collapse. Reed were on [...]

Saracens

Whilst the First eleven played away to North Mymms in the Village Cup the Second eleven hosted Saracens at The Green. Captain Peter Baker won the toss and inserted the opposition.M. Ayre started aggressively plundering 28 before missing a straight one from Joe Graves (7-0-50-1) who had opened bowling up the hill. First change bowlers Dominic McOmish (6-0-23-0) and Josh Conley (6-2-17-0) then bowled well to slow the run rate as the runs dried up for R. Young (37) and V. Archer (69). Ritchie Barlow (7-0-17-1) took a wicket thanks to a Christian Martin catch and Cemal Ramadam (6-0-48-1) got one thanks Lloyd Bowman. Saracens had knocked the ball about towards the end of their innings as they finished on 221 for 3.Reeds reply started at a steady pace as Barlow and Ed Blissett set about building a good platform. Unfortunately Blissett (11) was done for by a good delivery from A. Young (8-1-13-2) with the score on 34 from 12. After the loss of another wicket Dominic McOmish joined Barlow and worked the ball around in making 10 before being bowled by Bigby (8-2-15-1). At 87 for 3 Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease and after a tentative start began to support Barlow as he made a solid 56, he then retired to allow other batsmen to have a turn in the final 10 overs. M.J.E. Baker meanwhile remained and now with his eye in began to swing his bat as he knocked the ball about reaching his 50 in the final over before finishing on 61 not out with Joe Graves (0*) backing him up. Reed ended on 187 for 6 in this entertaining encounter.

Longstow

Reed’s Transitional Second XI travelled to south Cambs on Sunday for their first fixture against Longstowe. The hosts won the toss and decided to bat and Reed captain Peter Baker used the chance to give bowling opportunities to seven of his side. Six of them were under the age of 16 and although Longstowe lost only 4 wickets in their 40-over innings, their total of 230 was not massively out-of-reach. Cemal Ramadan took 2 for 22.It would require long individual innings from three or four of Reed’s top order, but unfortunately Baker fell for 14 and the number 3 went for a duck. Ed Blissett scored 32 then Rob Willoughby hit five boundaries in his 27, but after that it became somewhat of a procession as Reed’s younger batsmen came and went and finally succumbed for just 99. Reed II lost to Longstowe by 131 runs.
