Light showers were on the cards for the friendly fixture against Woodcutters at the Green and it was during a brief interlude that the toss was won by the visiting captain who elected to insert Reed.Opening for the hosts was Marcus J.E. Baker and Mathew Naeem who played the supporting role as Baker played in a care free fashion, swinging the bat hard and achieving positive results. Baker plundered ten fours and four sixes but in the eighteenth over as he took Reed from 99 to 117 he was caught behind for 82. After drinks Matt Naeem, now joined by Rob Willoughby, came out of his shell and notched up a few boundaries of his own. He was caught trying to up the run rate for a well played 44, meanwhile Willoughby was caught for 31 having scored in an aggressive fashion. In the closing over Masseh Naeem smashed 18, well supported by Jack Caine who made 7 not out. Reed closed on a competitive 229 for 5.After tea Reed made early inroads as Neil Haslam (8-1-32-2) and Joe Graves (6-0-42-2) took wickets thanks to a catch by Rob Willoughby as well as one from Keeper M.J.E. Baker who also took a tidy leg side stumping. However, despite the good start Woodcutters still found the boundary often and a partnership by Bartsch and Berdes (89*) all but got them home, Jack Caine (5-036-1) removing Bartsch (66) before the end.

On what turned out to be a damp and drizzly timed game Reeds Sunday Seconds fielded a youthful eleven playing with 6 of the under 15 squad as well as a couple under 18s. However, the young side certainly showed their abilities playing away to hosts Theydon Bois in Essex whose own eleven also had several young players.The hosts had won the toss and inserted Reed. They had perhaps reckoned on taking early wickets and putting pressure on Reed but the opening pair of Marcus J.E. Baker and Dominic McOmish put pay to that plan. With a constant drizzle now in the air Baker and McOmish played superb innings taking their time to get the measure of the bowlers whilst keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Going at just over 4 an over they put on 141 together when Baker was given out LBW for 69 (11x4s) with McOmish following the next over for 57. This could have given Theydon the opportunity they had sought but they had no such luck as Cemal Ramadam began to knock the bowling about notching up 27 in just 6 overs. Lloyd Bowman chipped in with 7 before Ben Walker (11*) and Greg Marshall (15*) finished off the Reed innings as Peter Baker declared with the score on 213 for 4 from 42 overs.The second innings was short lived as the drizzle became heavier and finally saw the players seeking shelter. Reed’s Sunday seconds was primarily made up of colts when they played away in their friendly match against neighbours Therfield.Therfield batted first and had made a big score of 246 for 9, thanks mostly to opener P. Leary (80) and J. Harper (68*). Christian Martin (5-1-46-2) and Ben Walker (8-0-40-0) had opened the bowling for Reed but struggled to find consistency as Therfield made a good start. But Martin struck twice before a third wicket fell to a sharp run out by A.J. Burnell. Rhodri Hughes was then introduced and the young leg spinner soon began to make inroads, he bowled a fantastic spell finishing with impressive figures of 8 overs 4 wickets for 34. Meanwhile, Marcus J.E. Baker (5-0-37-1) had taken some punishment but kept some dignity by taking the wicket of Bradfield (5) thanks to a catch by Walker. Josh Conley (5-1-21-1) also had a turn with the ball and bowled nicely in his spell. Despite the odd chance going down and the occasional miss-field, the young Reed side had done well in the field and could quite easily have been chasing a bigger total. There were catches each for John Kershaw, M.J.E. Baker, Walker and Rob Willoughby who claimed three.In response Reed started well with Peter Baker and M.J.E. Baker making 47 together before the elder was caught for 15. John Kershaw then came to the crease as he and Baker again frustrated the hosts by making a long partnership. On what was the only fixture of six to be played by a Reed side on a very wet weekend, the Sunday second eleven hosted Southgate Compton at the Green. Peter Baker won the toss and knowing that he was leading a young side elected to insert the stronger opposition.Joe Graves (5-0-38-1) opened down the hill and Chris Marshall (5-1-14-0) up. Early runs were made by Sanjay (18) and L. Frame until Sanjay was caught by Ed Worby at point. A second wicket fell soon after when Josh Conley at square leg ran round and threw down the stumps at the non strikers end punishing the visitors for some poor calling. Just before drinks Mitchell Cooper (6-2-15-2) was introduced to try and slow the run rate and take the key wicket of L. Frame who by know had passed his 50 and was working his way towards 100.However, it was the wicket of Shah (23) that Cooper took thanks to a catch behind before bowling Brandon (1). Young Jack Caine proved to be the most accurate of the bowlers keeping a tight line but was unfortunate not to take a wicket. In the final overs Ed Worby took 3 wickets for 32 including that of L. Frame (103) thanks to a catch by substitute fielder Scott Caine who was on for Rob Willoughby who went off after a nasty blow to the nose.In the second innings Peter Baker (24) and Mitchell Cooper (14) opened knowing that a good start was needed if Reed were to be successful in chasing their target of 221. Whilst the First eleven played away to North Mymms in the Village Cup the Second eleven hosted Saracens at The Green. Captain Peter Baker won the toss and inserted the opposition.M. Ayre started aggressively plundering 28 before missing a straight one from Joe Graves (7-0-50-1) who had opened bowling up the hill. First change bowlers Dominic McOmish (6-0-23-0) and Josh Conley (6-2-17-0) then bowled well to slow the run rate as the runs dried up for R. Young (37) and V. Archer (69). Ritchie Barlow (7-0-17-1) took a wicket thanks to a Christian Martin catch and Cemal Ramadam (6-0-48-1) got one thanks Lloyd Bowman. Saracens had knocked the ball about towards the end of their innings as they finished on 221 for 3.Reeds reply started at a steady pace as Barlow and Ed Blissett set about building a good platform. Unfortunately Blissett (11) was done for by a good delivery from A. Young (8-1-13-2) with the score on 34 from 12. After the loss of another wicket Dominic McOmish joined Barlow and worked the ball around in making 10 before being bowled by Bigby (8-2-15-1). At 87 for 3 Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease and after a tentative start began to support Barlow as he made a solid 56, he then retired to allow other batsmen to have a turn in the final 10 overs. M.J.E. Baker meanwhile remained and now with his eye in began to swing his bat as he knocked the ball about reaching his 50 in the final over before finishing on 61 not out with Joe Graves (0*) backing him up. Reed ended on 187 for 6 in this entertaining encounter.

Reed’s Transitional Second XI travelled to south Cambs on Sunday for their first fixture against Longstowe. The hosts won the toss and decided to bat and Reed captain Peter Baker used the chance to give bowling opportunities to seven of his side. Six of them were under the age of 16 and although Longstowe lost only 4 wickets in their 40-over innings, their total of 230 was not massively out-of-reach. Cemal Ramadan took 2 for 22.It would require long individual innings from three or four of Reed’s top order, but unfortunately Baker fell for 14 and the number 3 went for a duck. Ed Blissett scored 32 then Rob Willoughby hit five boundaries in his 27, but after that it became somewhat of a procession as Reed’s younger batsmen came and went and finally succumbed for just 99. Reed II lost to Longstowe by 131 runs.
