Matt miscalculates maiden milestone!

The Headlines for the final Sunday Friendly should have been "Gibbo leads the victory charge with marvellous ton!" Instead, he hit the winning runs with a two, but left himself stranded on 99 not out. At the secluded picturesque cricket ground where Stansted Hall & Elsenham CC reside, all the Reed XI plus 12th man were present and correct at the advertised start time. Worryingly, the SH&E Captain was accompanied by only 3 of his team-mates. Confusion over the start time and long delays caused by road works in Stansted, (where typically no one was actually working on a Sunday), meant that the wayward home players were "on their way". Once they had 6 changed and ready, the hosts decided to bat first as one-by-one their remaining team-mates arrived by various means. Fortunately, the opening pair of Thomas and Robinson compiled a century stand at well over 6 an over. Mike Robertson in particular found it difficult to come to terms with the right-hand, left-hand combination. He bowled some superb deliveries in his spell, but unfortunately what would have been potential wicket-taking balls to the right-hander were deemed leg-side wides to the left-hander - and vice-versa. Ben Mansfield took the first wicket and Will Archer added another. Debutant, Mark Rutt, took two but the fielders didn't help by spilling several chances. Robinson reached his splendid century then retired. In the end, SH&ECC set Reed the imposing target of 260 in 40 overs. After a suitable refreshment interval, Rhodri Hughes carried-on from his eighty last weekend and was soon into his stride. MJE Baker also soon found the middle of his little-used bat by hitting 4 fours in the second over of the innings and Reed [...]

Headlines: Week ending 13th September

Saturday, SHPCL: 37 appeared to be the significant recurring number in the 1st XI match. Tom Greaves took 3 for 37 in the West Herts innings and Rob Lankester and Mitchell Cooper had each scored 37 in Reed's. However, the bare bones were that Reed Firsts batted first and scored 218 with Ed Wharton racking up a fifty and Sean Tidey 46, followed by West Herts losing only 4 wickets in their victorious run chase. It was a double header, and West Herts prevailed again in the Second XI match, although in a much closer contest. Reed were all out for 90 and number 10, Rupert Martin, top-scored with 16 not out! He then proceeded to take 4 wickets, as did Scott Nash, but West Herts reached 91 with 9 wickets down. Problems caused by lack of availability meant that the Third Team game was cancelled. Sunday: A last ball thriller as Reed chased-down and passed Hare Street & Hormead's total of 208. Rhodri Hughes top-scored with 84 and Rob Lankester hit an undefeated half-century. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Sunday, Reed travel to new opponents, Stansted Hall & Elsenham, for a 1 o'clock start in a friendly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those interested in the Village Cup Final, it starts at 1100hrs on Saturday 19th September at Lord's Cricket Ground. Hertfordshire's Redbourn will be playing Colwall from Herefordshire. It is to be played behind closed doors with no supporters permitted to attend, just the playing squad, a scorer and one official from each Club. It will be so different from our own experiences. I have been reliably informed that the match will be streamed live by Frogbox and there is ball-by-ball commentary with Live Sports FM. We wish Redbourn [...]

Reed nearly pull off a miraculous victory over Hoddesdon

It was a case of finger nails being bitten to the quick in this match at The Green on Saturday. Hoddesdon won the toss and put the home team into bat. Reed found runs hard to come by on a slow pitch. Ed Wharton was the first wicket to fall bowled in the 7th over with the score on 12. The accurate bowling of the visitors continued to dry up the Reed scoring but any further wickets had to wait to the 17th over when Will Heslam fell with the score on 42. Wickets then fell regularly for the hosts and with James Heslam's dismissal, Reed were 81 for 5 with just over 12 overs left. Enter Mitchell Cooper who took an immediate liking to the Hoddesdon spinners, he hit 54 in 50 balls with 4 fours and four sixes in a 63-run partnership with Rich Wharton which brought a measure of respectability to Reed’s final score of 151 for 7 off their 45 overs. Hoddesdon set off quickly in their reply reaching 59 for 1 in their first ten overs. Toby Fynn (9-0-44-1) taking the wicket of Hoddesdon skipper Walters. A partnership of 54 between Broodryk and Clarke was eventually broken by Karl Ward (9-1-33-3), and within four overs the match had been changed as the visitors fell to 88 for 5. Skipper Tom Greaves (9-1-32-4) extracted turn and bounce on the now drying pitch. The collapse continued and Hoddesdon had fallen to 128 for 9. Reed sensed a marvellous victory. It was the visitors now finding runs hard to come by. Sean Tidey (6-0-9-0) passing the edge of the bat on numerous occasions. The pressure was palpable. Eventually after fifteen overs of knife [...]

Headlines: Week ending 6th September

SATURDAY: Mitch Cooper was again the top scorer in the 1st XI's close encounter with Hoddesdon by hitting 53 in Reed's 151 for 7. Despite 4 wickets from Tom Greaves and 3 by Karl Ward, Hoddie got over the line with only 1 wicket in-hand. At Hemel Hempstead, the totals and result were similar although in reverse. Hemel scored 150 all out thanks mainly to Marcus Martin removing 5 of the home batsmen. Then Stuart Smith scored sixty-six (alliteration!) in the Second Team's reply as Reed achieved the target with 8 wickets down. The Thirds did not play in the "league programme" at Pinner, but instead made the far shorter journey to Weston to play a friendly against Hitchin. Rob Willoughby was in fine form making 94 and Richard Johnson supported him with 78 as Reed closed on 255. Owen Hughes took 3 for 16 with Joe Graves and Chris Jordan taking 2 each as Hitchin fell away for an all-out score of 126. SUNDAY: At Aston, the Sunday XI won by 5 wickets chasing a total of 154 for 8. Bill Mansfield took 5 Aston wickets for 41 before Toby Fynn (66) and Rob Lankester (50 not out) guided Reed home in the 36th over. For those who don't know already, the National Village Cup Semi-Finals were played on Sunday. Colwall (Herefordshire) 238 for 6 overcame Carlton Towers (North Yorkshire) 147 for 5 in 32 overs by being ahead on run rate when bad light stopped play. Down in Somerset, Hertfordshire's Redbourn knocked-off North Perrott's score of 160 for 9 in only 22 overs with 8 wickets in-hand. The NVC Final organised by The Cricketer will be at Lord's on Saturday 19th September but [...]

The 2020 ECB Cricket Playing Survey

PUBLISHED ON BEHALF OF THE ECB. The 2020 Cricket Playing Survey is now live! This summer, as a game, we have had to be flexible and adapt, and we know many players have returned to a slightly different cricket experience than previous years. The Cricket Playing survey is ECB's number one opportunity to listen to the views of players and given the changes and sacrifices we have all had to make, more than ever we want to capture your views to identify what your cricket experience has looked like this year. By sharing with us what you think, we'll gain valuable feedback to ensure the voices of players continue to be heard and the game of cricket continues to evolve. We would like you to have Your Say. The survey will take roughly 10 minutes and will genuinely help us to shape our response in working with our County Cricket Boards and Leagues to provide you with the cricket you want. Thank you for taking the time to have your say! Colts Round-up

In those first early months of the 2020 season when the weather was mostly hot and sunny, we were not allowed to play any form of cricket. Slowly, restrictions relaxed and net practices began for the Under 15s then extended to the younger age groups and included fielding drills. Co-ordinated by Richard Barlow, he and the Coaches supervised these sessions under strict guidelines and the youngsters were seen on The Green practising and developing skills. Usually the Colts’ Fixtures would be completed by the end of the school term in late-July. This year, it was then that the Government gave the green light for matches to be played. With thanks to Reed’s Colts Liaison Officer, Hannah Heslam, she hastily arranged a small fixture list for each age-group with like-minded clubs who wished to provide some competitive games for the children who had been frustrated by not being permitted to play. It was also then that the weather decided to change and some of those games have fallen foul of the rain including both Under 9 matches. The Under 9 team managed by Simon Jackson is scheduled to play tonight (1st September) against Hitchin U9s at Reed whilst both the U10s (versus Bishop’s Stortford) and U15s (v. Bedford) are playing away this evening. The U12s have a match at home against St Margaretsbury on Friday the 4th and the U10s are away to Hemel Hempstead next Sunday morning. Here are some match summaries of the games played so far contributed by the Team Managers, James Heslam (U10), Lee Vincent (U12) and Ian Osborne (U15). —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- 3rd August. Rescue act in Radlett in vain

Reed travelled to Radlett for their latest match in the Premier Division of the Saracens Herts. League. Losing the toss on a day that looked more like one from March than late-August, Reed were asked to take first knock. The raw pace of Sanghera plus the left arm over of 15 year old Noah Cornwell kept runs at a premium in the early overs. Ed Wharton was the first to fall caught at deep mid-on for just 8. Will Heslam, Reed’s hero last week was struck on the helmet by a Sanghera bouncer and fell soon after for 4. Wickets fell regularly and Reed were teetering at 43 for 6 in just the 14th Over. Mitchell Cooper and Sean Tidey set about rebuilding the innings. They punished anything loose and short and pushed the score over 100, with the first batting point in sight, Tidey was stumped off the bowling of Josh De Caires, the son of former England Captain Michael Atherton, for 28. Cooper continued on, striking 6 fours and 3 sixes before edging behind for 48 off 61 balls. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn added 15 for the last wicket as Reed were dismissed for 145 in the 37th Over. A more than respectable recovery from the position they were in earlier! With Jack Tidey unable to bowl, Reed opened their attack with Ed Wharton (9-2-29-2) and Toby Fynn. Wharton soon struck taking the edge of Chatfield’s bat for a great catch behind by Sean Tidey with the score on 11. Wharton’s good lines and bounce soon snaffled a second wicket, De Caires for 21, and at 34-2, Reed were back in the match. Crawford and Arul responded to the Reed bowlers and [...]
