Heslam ton sets up convincing revenge on Leverstock Green

James Heslam continued his scoring streak on Saturday against Leverstock Green, but this time converting a fifty to a commanding unbeaten 107. He came in following a splendid opening partnership of 83 between Ed Wharton (55) and Phil Frenay (34) and benefited from he support of a classy 26 from Rob Lankester. However, the latter's fabled reverse sweep rather unluckily proved his downfall. After that, Stuart Smith (20) and Ed Garrott (29) both accompanied Heslam in stands of 70 to give Reed a substantial total of 299-8 , albeit on a hard, dry track conducive to batting. Lewis Koch, whose 90 led to Reed's defeat in the opening game of the season.was comprehensively bowled by Toby Fynn and Jack Caine dismissed his partner, Harry Blagdon (38) just as he was beginning to threaten. Only the talented Australian, Sol Tomlinson, looked capable of spoiling the party until the introduction of Sean Tidey from his stint behind the stumps immediately induced a rash shot to curtail his explosive innings on 44. It was then left to Tidey (3-43) and, inevitably, Tom Greaves (5-70) to spin the rest out for 198 on an increasingly dusty pitch. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

He also took 1 wicket when Saffron Walden fell 14 runs short; George Arnott, Thomas Green and Oliver Tallis were the other wicket-takers. Adam Gardner took 3 for 12, Sam Osborne 2 for 31 and William Archer 1 for 15. Reed managed only 90 in reply. The returning Roberts and Rice not enough to help Reed to a win!

What should have been an away fixture for Reed was played at the Freman Oval as requested by their opponents Mill Hill Village. This allowed their ground to be used later that evening, to celebrate a 150 years of cricket. On another glorious sunny day. Reed lost the toss and were put in the field. Brilliant opening spells from Neil Haslam (10 overs for 18) and Kieran McKinna (7 overs for 26) who both bowled without luck had kept the score to a premium. The returning Ian Roberts was then thrown the ball, and asked to continue where he'd left off 2 years ago. After a rusty first over he started to find his line and length and finished with 1 for 36 from his 10. Left-arm spinner, Sam Rice, also made his seasonal debut and in all 7 bowlers were used as Mill Hill's batters reached a target of 275-4 at tea. Reed's reply needed to be steady and secure, but in the 5th over Garrott was brilliantly caught at 2nd slip for 2. Reed now had to consolidate, and to a certain extent they did. Peter Baker (17), Mike Robertson (33), Jack Childs (29) and young McKinna (top-scoring with 39) all getting in, but no one going on to make the big score that could have made the difference. Then Reed's last 3 batsmen all got out for ducks! Reed had been bowled out for 145 in the 35th over; defeated by a 130 runs. All in all this was another disappointing day in what is becoming a difficult season for the 3s. Match Report submitted by Paul Garrott.

Seconds unstuck at Stevenage

Reed 2nd XI were in-form having won their last four games, however came unstuck at Stevenage 2nd XI after a disappointing batting display. Reed won the toss and chose to bat and the decision proved the correct one as Reed’s openers made the most of an excellent batting surface and quick outfield. Richard Johnson (25) was the first wicket to fall after the 50 run partnership came up in the 9th over. Phil Frenay (46) was the next man to depart with the score on 106. Stevenage’s spinners then began to pull the game back in the home side’s favour. A number of the middle order batsmen made starts but no one was able to support Chris Jackson who fell for 50. A patient, invaluable knock from Matt Bowles (27) enabled Reed to pass the 200 run mark, finally finishing 213 all out, at least 30 or 40 runs below par. In response, Stevenage’s openers made a steady start before Owen Hughes (2-0-10-1) made the breakthrough. However it wasn’t a day for seam bowling and Reed soon turned to spin to halt Stevenage’s advance. Reed’s answer to Samit Patel, "Mattis" Bowles (10-2-28-3) bowled beautifully in conjunction with Ed Garrott but despite wickets falling fairly regularly, without being able to apply much scoreboard pressure, and an excellent innings of 81 not out from Stevenage’s number 3, Stevenage cruised home comfortable winners by 4 wickets. Match Report submitted by Phil Frenay.

Toby cracks a Ton!

A maiden century from Toby Fynn, usually performing with the new ball rather than the bat, was the highlight in the friendly fixture against regular guests, Forest Gate, on the Green on Sunday. In an accomplished innings of 115 not out, Toby carried his bat as he was firstly accompanied by Bill Mansfield (10) and John Kershaw (17) when Reed set-off at 5 runs an over. Taking his opportunity up the order at number 4, Owen Hughes partnered Fynn adding 123 for the 3rd wicket. Hughes was close to a deserved half-century when he was LBW for a well-made 49. Enjoying the remaining few deliveries, Reed ended their 40 overs on 226 for 4. Wickets were even harder for Reed to snaffle when Zafran, (44), Yasin (86 not out) and Sarwed (76 not out) set about winning the game at a canter. Steve Hughes was the only successful Reed bowler when skipper, MJE Baker, stumped the hard-hitting Zafran but no one else was able to apply the brakes and Forest Gate used only 32 overs to achieve the target. Firsts lose out in another tight finish

Reed collapsed to 49-6 as Ollie Ilott (nephew of Mark) and Khalid Manzoor bamboozled the normally prolific scoring top order. However an exciting seventh wicket stand of 93 between the ever dependable James Heslam and belligerent Sean Tidey swung the game back Reed’s way. When Tidey was caught at the second attempt for 46 and Heslam went for 52 (his fourth fifty of the season) there was little hope, but Jack Tidey (41) batting with a gammy knee and Toby Fynn with a last wicket stand of 38 came tantalisingly close to securing an improbable win, but Ilott (7-81) had the last say as Reed ended on 194. It seemed an unlikely result earlier as Langleybury subsided to 201 all out with Ed Wharton (13-4-42-3) and Toby Fynn tying down the batsmen at first. Sean Tidey with an economical 13-2 -31-3 and Tom Greaves, who bought his 4 wickets for 87 runs, whittled out the later order. Richard Wharton again claimed another 4 victims behind the stumps. A disappointing result for Reed in a topsy-turvy game. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Headlines; Week Ending 1st July

COLTS: All the eights! Both Wenden Under 11s and Reed Under 11s lost 8 wickets but Wenden scored 8 runs more than Reed, (91 plays 83). SATURDAY (SHPCL): We have reached the halfway stage of the Herts League season. After 9 fixtures, the Firsts are 7th in the Championship Division. In the latest match at The Green, Langleybury were bowled out for 201 (4 wickets for Tom Greaves, and 3 each for Ed Wharton and Sean Tidey), but although coming tantalisingly close, Reed too were bowled all out for 194; James Heslam scored another fifty and both Tidey brothers passed forty. The Seconds were at Stevenage and after a good start they faltered to 213 all out. Chris Jackson was out soon after reaching his half-century and Phil Frenay was also in the runs. Stevenage lost 6 wickets before overhauling the target with 3 of the wickets falling to Matt Bowles. The Seconds find themselves 4th in Division 4B. The Thirds again had a beating at Freman College. Picking up only 7 points from this match against Mill Hill Village it's unsurprising to see Reed Thirds at the foot of the table in Division 9A. MHV totted-up 275 for 4 and in reply Reed were all out for 145. Top scorer was Keiren McKinna (39) and Mike Robertson (33) and Jack Childs (29) also chipped-in. SUNDAY: It was a ton-up for Toby Fynn in the friendly against Forest Gate. He was 115 not out and Owen Hughes scored 49 in Reed's 226 for 4. Steve Hughes took the only Foresters' wicket to fall as they sailed to 227 for 1. Village Cup News - for those interested in this season's events (since Reed were knocked-out [...]
