Reed won the toss and bowled first on a good looking track at Freman, but with a strong looking batting line-up the Reed skipper thought whatever score Welwyn acheived, Reed would surpass, but the longer their innings went, the more less likely that was going to be the case.

At tea Welwyn had ammassed 352 for 3 from their 50 overs. Patrick Lynch carried his bat for 195 not out whilst teenager Joe Bilyard scored 95. Neil Haslam was the only bowler who came out unscathed returning figures of 10-0-34-1.

In reply Reed knew they had to get off to a good start, but it was not looking good as they found themselves being 10 for 2, then 22 for 3. Good knocks from Mike Robertson (47), Rhodri Hughes(45) and Lloyd Bowman (28) enabled Reed to reach a total of 175. But that was 177 runs short of their target.
