Welwyn IVs outgun Reed IIIs

Reed won the toss and bowled first on a good looking track at Freman, but with a strong looking batting line-up the Reed skipper thought whatever score Welwyn acheived, Reed would surpass, but the longer their innings went, the more less likely that was going to be the case. At tea Welwyn had ammassed 352 for 3 from their 50 overs. Patrick Lynch carried his bat for 195 not out whilst teenager Joe Bilyard scored 95. Neil Haslam was the only bowler who came out unscathed returning figures of 10-0-34-1. In reply Reed knew they had to get off to a good start, but it was not looking good as they found themselves being 10 for 2, then 22 for 3. Good knocks from Mike Robertson (47), Rhodri Hughes(45) and Lloyd Bowman (28) enabled Reed to reach a total of 175. But that was 177 runs short of their target. “Phil the eagle” swoops the Seconds to victory!

Reed IIs notched up their fourth consecutive victory in a wonderful game of cricket against previously unbeaten West Herts IIs on Saturday. Captain Phil Frenay won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on what looked a typically batting friendly surface at The Green. Frenay along with Richard Johnson opened the innings for Reed and got off to a free-scoring start as both batsmen found the boundary regularly. However, when Frenay was adjudged LBW, soon to be followed back to the hutch by the elegant Johnson, Reed looked somewhat vulnerable. Undeterred, Chris Jackson and Mitch Cooper took up the mantle and put on a wonderful 150-run partnership as both looked set for a well-deserved century. Boundaries came at regular intervals and sensible running ensured the visitors were kept on their toes as Reed looked set for a huge score. It was not to be however, as first Jackson departed for 77, harshly adjudged caught behind, and then Cooper (75) ran himself out. Some useful contributions in the middle order, particularly by Jack Caine, got Reed comfortably above the 200 mark, but a lower order collapse meant they had to settle for 240 all out. In reply, the free-scoring visitors got off to a strong start. However, excellent bowling by the increasingly impressive Matt Giblin and the introduction of Caine and Cooper started to chip away at the wickets. Cooper was excellent in his accuracy and picked up 3 wickets with his nagging medium pacers. Despite wickets falling, West Herts remained up with the rate and some middle order resistance kept them well in the game. Thriller at Hoddesdon ends all square!

Both sides scored 307 on the ‘road’ at Hoddesdon in a thrilling finish. With 7 required for a win in the final over, Tom Greaves left the home side needing a single off the final ball. A push to mid-wicket, a fast throw from Matt Sampson and Greaves whipped off the bails before Martin Brown on a rapid 35 just failed to make his ground. When Reed was surprisingly inserted, Matt Sampson was again the main man with a chanceless 100. He was well supported by Rob Lankester with 12 boundaries for 57 and James Heslam, who once again provided the spine of the innings, only departing on the penultimate ball for 59. It was left to Sean Tidey though to blast 38 from 25 balls, including 3 maximums and an invaluable boundary from the last ball, which took Reed to maximum batting points. Hoddesdon faltered at first as Ed Wharton and Toby Fynn removed the ‘big guns’, Rob Walters and Jadyn Broderick for ducks, but Sam Davis scored his second ‘daddy’ hundred this month and looked to be taking Hoddesdon home until Greaves eventually bowled him for a mammoth 140 at nearly a run a ball. Then came the dramatic finish on a pitch that did no favours to bowlers, although Greaves bravely soldiered on through the carnage taking 3-104 and Toby Fynn opened well with 9-2-31-2. Headlines; Week Ending 24th June

COLTS: All three Colts teams were in action this week - unfortunately not with any success! On Wednesday the Under 13s were away at Saffron Walden where the hosts totalled 160 for 1. That wicket fell to Archie McIntosh who had a personally good day when he top-scored with 35 in Reed's reply of 88. The Under 9s played Pirton on Friday at Reed. The visitors were far stronger and passed 300 with the loss of only 4 wickets. The Reed youngsters could muster just 221 and lost 10 wickets in the process. Also on Friday, the Under 11s went to Whittlesford to meet opponents, Thriplow. Thriplow scored 113 for 4 (a net score of 293); Oliver Keenan took 2 wickets and Charlie Walters and Finn Collery 1 each. Missing some regulars, Reed lost 10 wickets as they scored 48 runs which gave them a net total of 198. Charlie Walters scored 19 but was out twice. SATURDAY (SHPCL): Matt Sampson showed his class with a chanceless ton at Hoddesdon. Rob Lankester and James Heslam also scored fifties as the First XI made it to 307 for 6. A thrilling match was ended by a run-out by the Sampson / Tom Greaves combination with the scores level. Tom Greaves had also taken 3 wickets. The Second XI marched on to 4 wins in a row at Reed. Chris Jackson and Mitchell Cooper each scored seventies in the hosts' 240 all out. And Cooper was in the action in the second innings too by claiming 3 West Herts' wickets when they were dismissed for 224. The Third XI was walloped at the Freman Oval. Welwyn Garden City raced to 352 losing only 3 wickets. At least [...]

Three wins on the bounce for the 2nds

Reed II XI travelled to Flamstead on Saturday hoping to make it 3 wins on the bounce. It was a rare occasion where not a single member of the experienced side had played cricket there before, and perhaps never have to play there again if they continue winning. Reed won the toss and inserted the opposition, hoping to capitalise on what from their recent results appeared to a be a fallible Flamstead batting line up. Reed were soon in to their stride reducing the home team to 25-5 with excellent opening spells from Mitchell Cooper (finishing with 4 wickets) and Jack Caine (2 wickets). As the ball softened, batting became markedly easier and Flamstead rallied to post a semi respectable total of 145 all out despite the effort of Matthew Bowles (2 wickets) and a wicket each for Julien Fynn and Ed Garrott. Despite the apparently manageable target, given how the ball had behaved at the beginning of the Flamstead innings, Reed knew that the result was far from a forgone conclusion. Reed lost Frenay early but Rich Barlow, passing 30 yet again, and Chris Jackson (50 not out) steadied the ship with an excellent partnership. When Barlow was run-out with Reed looking comfortable, there was a bit of a wobble, with various batsmen briefly getting in and then out again but once Cooper joined Jackson it took just a few lusty blows for the former to wrap up the game and a 5 wicket win for Reed. Gibbo is the “Matt of the Match”!

Reed Sunday XI versus Antigua Cavaliers CC at Reed on Sunday 17th June 2018. Reed batted first with players from across the range of abilities representing the club in this friendly against Antigua Cavaliers who hail all the way from Walthamstow! William Heslam (14) and Matt Bowles (19) put-on 37 in good time with no particular alarms but when both of them plus Sean Tidey, Andy Brown and Ben Mansfield went close together Reed were approaching the halfway stage at 68 for 5. Young Tom Nussey looked good supporting James “Sandy” Sandford until he was run-out for 14 by which time the score had progressed to 105 for 6. “Sandy” compiled an assured 64 before he became one of Irfan’s 3 wickets but more wickets soon fell cheaply and it was clear that Reed would not reach a defendable total unless something was done about it. Matt Giblin was joined at the crease by Jack Tidey then from 149 for 9 the pair inflated the score to 213 for 9 in an unbroken partnership of 64. Giblin made 18 whilst “Big Jack’s” 43 contained 9 fours. The Cavaliers did not mess about after tea as Bubash (40) and H Lee (16) knocked-off fifty of the arrears in only 7 overs, but once they had departed to athletically taken catches by keeper MJE Baker and Jack Tidey in the slips off Giblin’s bowling, the successive incoming batsmen were not so free-scoring. There were still some big hits to, and over, the boundary but they were less frequent. William Heslam claimed 2 wickets for 28 and Ben Mansfield and Tom Nussey 1 each, but the stand-out bowler was Matt Giblin who rounded-off a good day by taking [...]

Willoughby Bros do the damage

Reed III versus Letchworth Garden City IV at Fairfield Park, Stotfold on Saturday 16th June 2018. Once the scores were level, Kieren Willoughby hit over the top to the boundary to take Reed’s Third team to victory by 4 wickets and his personal score to 83 not out. On the wide outfield at Fairfield Park over 490 runs were notched-up with Letchworth’s captain, Michael Hughes, making an undefeated 140 of them in his team’s innings of 244 for 5. His opening stand with Keith Nowland (73) was worth 157 but Reed’s Rob Willoughby (3 for 39) made inroads in the batting order thereafter with supporting wickets from Kieran McKinna and Maseeh Naeem (1 each). Enthusiastic fielding by especially Jack Childs, Kieren Willoughby and Rhodri Hughes saved a score of runs and Kieran McKinna safely pouched a catch whilst MJE Baker displayed his keeping skills with a stumping. Requiring a shade under 5 an over, Rob Willoughby was lost early but PG Baker and Rhodri Hughes scored freely adding 89 together before Hughes was run-out for 43. The two Bakers partnered each other for a while but pére skied one and was out for 41 then fils was run-out for 29. Jack Childs and skipper Maseeh Naeem came and went leaving Reed poised at 178 for 6 with the outcome unpredictable. Owen Hughes gave solid support in what turned-out to be a crucial match-winning stand whilst Kieren Willoughby found the boundary with ease. Time was never a problem and so it was that with 3 overs to spare Reed had drawn level and after one more delivery had passed the target. Wharton and Wilson shine

It was a game of two standout openers’ batting performances. Initially, Richard Wharton carried his bat for a sparkling 125, but he was then matched by Sawbridgeworth’s experienced no.1, Danny Wilson, agonisingly out in the penultimate over for 98. However, he had almost single-handedly saved the game for Sawbridgeworth, who ended on 167-7, facing Reed’s imposing 290-7. Wharton was well supported by his brother, Ed’s, quick-fire 32 (7 boundaries) and in-form Matt Sampson’s 30, but the bed-rock of the innings was a partnership of 118 between him and Rob Lankester (63). The latter produced his usual array of strokes, including his trademark reverse sweep. The habitual clatter of wickets followed as Reed racked up their highest total this year. Facing this challenge, Sawbridgeworth were never in the hunt with wickets falling regularly, but Wilson found support from Kafi Khan and Matt Billings as Tom Greaves tried 8 bowlers in a desperate attempt to force a win, one of whom lasted just 5 balls before two ‘beamers’ forced him off! Headlines; Week Ending 17th June

COLTS: The Under 11s lost to Royston scoring 76 runs to the hosts' 87. The difference was that Royston lost 7 wickets giving them a net score of 252 but Reed lost 12 wickets! (Net score 216. Charlie Walters scored 14 and Jacob Vincent but both were out once each. James Heslam reports that Reed Under 9s gained more valuable experience in two defeats to strong Knebworth Park and Baldock sides. On Tuesday, Knebworth batted first and scored 286. The pick of the Reed bowlers was Josh Heslam taking 1-4 off his 3 overs. In reply Reed made 229 with Jamie Rogers top scoring with 8. It was a memorable night for 5 year-old Eddie Heslam who made his U9s debut standing-in at the last minute in his school uniform doing the Reed All Stars proud by bowling one over for just one run and scoring two singles! Then on Friday Reed batted first and scored 220. Unfortunately with all run scoring batsman getting out at least once no one scored more than 2 runs overall for Reed. In the 2nd innings Reed bowled pretty well but only Josh Heslam took a wicket against strong Baldock batting so they made their way to 280 despite another fine run out by Oscar Brickles. SATURDAY (SHPCL): Rich Wharton's was the stand-out performance for the Firsts hitting an undefeated 125 against Sawbridgeworth. Rob Lankester scored 63 as Reed closed on 290 for 7. Sawbo were never in the hunt and also lost 7 wickets but scored only 168 in the process. Karl Ward took 3 for 27. The Seconds travelled to Flamstead and had the hosts all-out for 145, Mitch Cooper claiming 4 of the wickets to fall. [...]
