Dear All, PRESIDENT’S DAY AND CHARITY LUNCH AUGUST 16. President’s Day is looming fast, now only 2 weeks away, and arrangements are progressing satisfactorily towards what we all hope will be an enjoyable day. Our captains, Marcus Martin and James Heslam are busy cogitating over their team selections, to ensure an exciting day’s cricket between two evenly matched sides. HOWEVER, numbers for the Charity Lunch are lagging behind somewhat, and the purpose of this letter is to remind everyone of the need to let me know URGENTLY if you wish to attend. I have to inform our caterers of final numbers by the end of next week at the latest, and at present our acceptances are down on previous years. For your £25:00 you receive a superb 4 course meal prepared by Capers Catering (probably the finest catering company in the Herts/Beds/Cambs region), together with the opportunity to win one of the superb raffle prizes! Fine wines have been sourced at modest prices, and of course, the contents of the Club bar will be available as usual. Because of the limited availability of places, I may have omitted to contact some of you, initially, for fear of being unable to fit everyone in, but as the situation stands at present, I would welcome a further 25 diners. Thanks for your attention - PLEASE let me know as soon as possible. Reed 1st XI team effort in superb victory

Reed 1st XI secured an excellent win versus high-flying Botany Bay on Saturday at the Green. After the significant rainfall the day before the game Reed captain Heslam chose to put in the visitors despite the threat of some prolific batsman in the Botany Bay ranks. This strength soon became apparent as ex-Northants Ben Howgego started in ominous form on a wicket which seemed to have responded well to being covered throughout the previous days bad weather. Although Kasey Harris (19) and Dan Kastelik (7) went relatively cheaply to Tom Greaves (1-46) and Reece Fitzgerald (1-22) well caught by Chris Jackson and Will Heslam, the classy Howgego had put the visitors in control of the game by lunch at 154-2 off 34 overs. Reed knew they needed to get through the visitors quickly after lunch and that they did in fantastic style. Jack Tidey (3-51) opened the door by removing Howgego for a superb 101 and then he and Phil Lill (3-39) ripped through the Botany Bay middle order reducing them to 175-7 off 41 overs, an incredible turnaround. Reed eventually took the last 3 wickets to leave the bay all out for 203 in the 53rd over, with Fynn (2-30) returning to finish things off nicely. Despite the turnaround of the game situation Reed knew they would need to bat well to win the game against a testing Bay attack. They got off to a slow but steady start before 3 quick wickets left the home side in trouble at 31-3 with Will Heslam (19) the only batsman to reach double figures at this stage. Lankester stands up to see side home, Reed move into first place

Reed Seconds followed up their one-sided victory against Wheathampstead last week with another dominant display, this time against Ickleford. Playing away, Reed were pleasantly surprised to be asked to bowl first on a pitch with noticeable water damage from Fridays daylong downpour. After some attacking shots Reed picked up their first wicket thanks to a catch at point by Jack Caine from the bowling of Tom Walsingham. Walsingham (7-1-22-1) would continue to put down the ball at pace and managed to beat the bat on several occasions putting real pressure on the in coming batsmen. Peter Tidey at the other end meanwhile was producing all kinds of variable bounce and ended up taking 3 superb wickets for 20. With this early pressure from the openers and Reeds usual high standards in the field Ickleford were in real trouble. They found no let up from the change bowlers as Karl Ward (12-5-12-3), Jack Caine (1.2-0-5-1) and Ian Osbourne (5-0-10-2) all chipped in. Reed were in a solid position at the start of the second innings with a drying pitch and a paltry 82 to chase down. It was still hard going however, as Reed captain Phil Frenay and Richard Johnson got things going. Ickleford had little other option but to attack and applied pressure well. They managed to pick themselves up four wickets, as Reed feared an embarrassing collapse. However after Johnson’s 21 and 12 from Osbourne young Rob Lankester (39*) carried the burden of getting his side over the line showing supreme composure throughout. Spectacular collapse costs Reed IIIs

Reed III's struggles continued after slipping to a narrow defeat to Great Gaddesden. After the previous day’s monsoon, Reed captain Mike Robertson had little hesitation in inserting the visitors upon winning the toss. Gaddesden got off to a solid start despite an early wicket for Joe Graves (6-0-43-1). However, despite the accurate bowling of Aiden Woodcock (15-2-45-2) it was not until the introduction of Will Stock that Reed managed to make another breakthrough. Stock bowled two good spells as he finished with figures of (11-3-41-5). Woodcock eventually got his rewards for his accuracy as he picked up two wickets. Owen Hughes (6-0-46-1) and Jason Pallett (8-0-26-0) attempted to stem the flow but good middle order runs saw Great Gaddesden advance beyond the 200 mark. Skipper Robertson (7-1-25-1) bowled well at the death to limit the damage but a score of 222-9 from the allotted 53 overs was at least par. Reed’s response got off to a very good start as Rhodri Hughes (32) and veteran Peter Baker put on 86 for the opening wicket, before Hughes departed after being caught. When Ben Bowles followed soon after for 1, Reed looked to be wobbling. However Baker (62) and Stock steadied the ship and Stock in particular began to up the run rate. After Baker departed, Mike Robertson was promoted up the order to boost the run rate yet further as he and Stock put the hosts into a seemingly winning position as they approached 200. However disaster was looming as both Stock (67) and Robertson (17) departed in consecutive balls. Things only got worse when the in-form Matt Bowles was run out for 2. Roberts rescues the Fourths

Reed 4s traveled to Datchworth on Saturday after a week's break in Regional Division C East. Despite Friday's deluge, the pitch and outfield were in remarkably good condition. Skipper Lloyd Bowman lost the toss and Reed were put in to bat. Both openers Matthew Naeem and Martin Johnson fell early to the accurate bowling of Clark. Mas Naeem (21) and Zac Conley (10) then steadied things but were dismissed by Clark and the other opening bowler Carmichael and at 42 for 4 Reed were wobbling. Matters got even worse when skipper Bowman (2) and debutant Michael Hubbard fell in successive balls to Carmichael and at 49 for 6 in just the 12th over an early finish was on the cards. However, Ian Roberts and Chris West hadn't read the script and dug in for a well-crafted 71 partnership for the seventh wicket on a pitch with variable bounce. West was bowled by a yorker from Murphy for 23 but by this time the Reed recovery was underway at 110 for 7. Roberts carried on in the same vein playing each ball on its merits and dispatching the bad ball to the boundary. He was ably supported by Matt Yates (13) and they took Reed to 155 before Roberts fell to the returning Clark for 59, the last two wickets could only muster 6 more runs, however at 161 all out, Reed had given them a target to bowl at. Headlines – 25th / 26th July

Despite the prolonged rainfall on Friday / Saturday, only 5 matches out of the entire programme of 133 Herts League matches were cancelled. The new covers at Reed are proving their worth, and the old-style ground sheet covers were employed at Freman College which meant matches began on time. At Reed, the Firsts had a well-earned victory over old rivals, Botany Bay, and moved one position up the Championship Table. There were 3 wickets each for Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn as the Bay were restricted to 203 all-out. Then slowly but surely, Reed made the required target in the 60th over. Chris Jackson provided the glue to the innings making 65 not out as Reed lost 7 wickets on their way to the win. One of the 5 games cancelled was Welwyn Garden City’s home match versus Old Cholmeleians in Division 5B. Old Cs were top of the table prior to yesterday’s round of matches, but by being awarded only 10 points for their “No Result”, Reed Seconds were able to leap-frog them once they had demolished Ickleford for 82 and won by 6 wickets. They are now in 1st place with a lead of 8 points. The bowling credits go to Pete Tidey and Karl Ward who again had 3 wickets each, then Rob Lankester remained calm at the crease to score 39 not out as Reed overhauled the target within 22 overs. In the Third’s match against Great Gaddesden at the Freman Oval, the visitors scored an under par 222 for 9 in their 53 overs. 3 wickets fell to Will Stock who then scored 67 in the run chase that followed. Reed 1st XI secure important win!

Reed 1st XI got back to winning ways and secured an important win vs West Herts on Saturday with an impressive and hard fought performance. Given the torrential rain Thursday night it was no surprise when West Herts elected to bowl first and conditions weren’t easy for batting throughout the game and certainly early on. Reed got off to a slow but reasonably solid start of 22-0 off 9 overs before James Heslam went for just 7. However this brought Alex Mutucumarana to the crease who immediately added impetus which along with Will Heslam (32) who started to find the boundary took Reed nicely along to 70-1 off 25 overs. Although Heslam then fell stumped and Chris Jackson went in unfortunate circumstances for 9, Stuart Smith and Mutucumarana who hit 2 towering sixes took Reed along to 124-3 off 42 overs in a good position to accelerate. Unfortunately Mutucumarana went shortly after for an excellent 60 and with Cooper also a little unfortunate Reed needed more runs. This came in the form of Sean (18) and Jack Tidey (27) who with a combination of hitting into gaps and some lusty blows batted well with Smith (23) who had taken up the important anchor role. Reed innings came to a close at 196 all out in the 59th over. West Herts had 56 overs to chase down the runs and Reed knew they would need to bowl and field extremely well. That is exactly what they did as the returning Jack Tidey (1-48) and Toby Fynn (3-41) both bowled superbly with pace and direction. Reed 2nd XI power their way to 30 points

It was a case of get your man down and keep him down as Reed powered to victory against visiting Wheathampstead. Marcus Martin had won the toss and put in the opposition. The first wicket fell in the first over to Tom Walsingham and things did not get much better for the visitors after that. To their credit they tried their best to be stubborn and hang in for as long as possible but it was all in vain. Walsingham (7-3-10-2) and Peter Tidey (15-7-25-3) had started proceedings. Whilst Martin (6-3-6-2) and Karl Ward (14-4-26-3) followed after them. The fielding although not at its best was good when it counted and several hard catches were hung onto. A target of 76 proved no obstacle for Ed Garrott (42*) and Richard Johnson (31*) who quickly smashed Reed to victory in 10.2 overs. The win will prove a huge confidence boost after a frustrating couple of weeks. The mood in the team remains high and with gap between Reed and title rivals Old Chomelians decreasing things are looking really good for Reed.

‘The Big O’ and ‘Golden Graham’ key to brilliant victory

Reed showed all of their great skill in the field to bring about a victory against visitors Chigwell. The first innings however, had been somewhat disappointing for the home side as a batting card full of talent made a below par target. Reed had quickly slumped to 20 for 3 after deciding to bat first. The bowling of Kerr and Hannant proved good enough to get on top of the top order. A stubborn fight back came from Rhodri Hughes and John Kershaw got Reed back in the game. They saw off the openers and began to build a platform for the rest of the team. However, disaster struck as both Hughes (22) and Kershaw (26) fell either side of drinks. The score was on a precarious 67 for 5 when team captain Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease. He and Ben Moody had to completely restart the Reed innings which they did with due diligence. The change bowlers were found to be easier to get away as Moody and Baker got the board ticking again. Moody (13) eventually was bowled ending his crucial knock but it made way for the big hitting Jack Tidey (17) to come to the crease. Again Tideys runs proved crucial in the last few overs. As Reed began to run out of overs Baker began to swing harder and was able to make a chanceless 66 not out as he steered his side to 169 for 8. At the start of the second innings young Owen Hughes made sure his ‘Iron Boots’ were done up as tight as his bowling.
