Forest Gate

On Sunday Reed entertained Forest Gate on a glorious day at The Green. After the retirement of captain Ed Blissett last week, it was the responsibility of Richard Barlow to successfully win the toss and elect to bat on what looked to be a very good batting surface.Openers William Heslam and Stuart Smith made a steady start, punishing the bad ball and playing some classy strokes before Heslam departed for 25 as S.Sharif claimed his first wicket. At 36-1, Sean Tidey came in to partner Smith as they looked to increase the run rate. Tidey played confidently from ball 1 and raced to 50 before Smith was bowled by O.Sher for a well crafted 37. Marcus J E Baker then strode out to the wicket looking to continue with the aggressive intent that Reed had displayed early on. The pair did just this as Reed reached 163-2 at the drinks interval. After a break from the late July sunshine, Reed carried on where they had left off by playing with class, power and confidence with Tidey in particular impressing bringing up a brutal century. He hit the ball to all parts of the ground with perfect timing and amassed 17 boundaries before retiring after raising his bat. Barlow came in to bat and led by example, supporting Baker as the pair found gaps in the field and reached the boundary regularly. The duo brought up their 50's with the powerful Baker retiring on 53 and the intricate Barlow, who brought up his 50 with a fantastic reverse sweep before he too retired on exactly 50. Reed capped off thier innings with some lusty blows from Rob Willoughby (6), Tom Greaves (6*) and Matthew Bowles who made 16 including a gigantic [...]

Little Hadham

The timed match between Reed and Little Hadham ended in disappointment for the young Reed side.Having been inserted Reed got off to a brisk start as Marcus J.E. Baker (22) struck several boundaries before being bowled with the total on 29. As the rain fell so did another wicket, when Rhoddri Hughes joined Ben Walker, in less than suitable conditions. Despite the persistent rain the pair worked well together, working the ball about taking Reed to 50 when the rain became too much as the players sought shelter and tea. After over an hour’s break play continued and quickly saw the fall of R. Hughes (6) and B. Walker (16) not long after. Rob Willoughby (25) and Josh Conley (17) struck powerful shots to make their runs but were out prematurely as Little Hadham looked set to dismiss Reed for a low total. Now 8 wickets down Steve Hughes rescued the Reed innings, playing in only his second match. With Joe Graves (8), playing yet another fantastic supporting effort, S. Hughes impressed in not only his shots but his focus to get Reed to a defendable total which he did before falling to an amazing catch for 26. B. Law (6-1-25-5) had done the damage for Little Hadham as Reed were bowled all out for 132.In reply the hosts ended up making easy work of Reeds total winning by 8 wickets. Mason-Smith top scored with 70 before falling LBW to Josh Conley (3-2-1-1). Earlier Rhoddri Hughes (5-0-33-1) had claimed South (7) also LBW.

Elmdon Home

Reed Ist XI entertained Elmdon Ist XI on Sunday 23rd July in a 40 overs a-side friendly game.Elmdon won the toss and on a pitch that had been enlivened by recent rain, put Reed into bat. Stuart Smith and Ed Blissett opened the batting for Reed. Smith was soon into his stride playing some powerful drives whilst Blissett accumulated at the other end. The openers reached their 50 partnership in the 9th over after which Smith accelerated strongly. He rapidly achieved his 50 with some lusty blows and continued to hit the ball hard as the score mounted rapidly. Blissett at the other end was now manoeuvring the ball smoothly into gaps, as the openers posted their 100 partnership in the 16th over. Smith eventually fell, stumped off Starr for 95, whilst looking to hit yet another boundary. Greaves now joined Blissett and was soon a series of fine shots. Blissett completed his 50, at which point he retired hurt with a reoccurrence of a troublesome shin splint injury.Fergus Martin now joined Greaves and ably supported him, in building the Reed total. Greaves quickly passed his fifty and was now driving and sweeping to great effect. As the innings reached its last over Greaves needed only 3 more runs to complete his century. It looked as though he would be denied this opportunity as Martin was in strike and hit two fours, off the 2nd and 3rd balls of the over. Eventually though Greaves got to the strikers end and with a ball to spare completed his 100. The innings closed with Reed making an impressive 286 for 1.Cooper and Haslam opened the bowling after tea. Both bowlers troubled the Elmdon openers, but it was [...]

Knebworth Blues

Knebworth Blue visited the Reed green for a friendly, late in the 2011 season and having won the toss Knebworth elected to bat first.Reed picked up an early wicket when James Baker got both hands to one from Neil Haslam (8-2-31-1) diving to his left. Baker nearly made it two in two when he again dived for a tough one to his left, however Tom Walshingham was (7-1-30-0) was not as lucky. Kallum Ward came on and bowled Nash (29) and went on to take another two wickets finishing with 3 for 32. Josh Conley (3-0-23-1) took the only other wicket that of Isaac (99) who was caught by Dominic McOmish. Knebworth finishing on 220 for 5.McOmish then made a solid start for Reed with the bat along with fellow opener Mitchell Cooper making 75 in just 13 overs. However after the loss of Cooper for 27 Reed lost some more cheap wickets until Rob Willoughby gave some support to McOmish as he went to 50. McOmish was then stumped, as was Willoughby who had made 29 with some clean strikes of the ball. Ward (60*) and Walshingham (26*) then finished off the Reed innings with some brutal but none the less beautiful strokes, making 64 in 6 overs leaving Reed winners by 4 wickets.

Ickleford

Reed’s Sunday Seconds suffered a rather one sided defeat playing away in a conference fixture at Ickleford.Marcus J.E. Baker won the toss and elected to field first opening with Joe Graves (6-0-43-0) and Chris Marshall (8-0-47-3). Marshall bowled two in his opening spell, holding a tight line and consistent pace. Reed were then made to toil as Ickleford first team skipper Jenner and Dobson made a strong partnership, finding the boundary with ease whilst also taking quick singles. The young Reed side found it hard going in the heat but stuck in there and after the retirement of Jenner (102) wickets began to come easily. Dobson (91) was caught superbly by Rhodri Hughes in the slips off the bowling of Peter Baker (3-0-21-1). Hughes and C. Marshall both took wickets in their returning spells thanks to catches by Greg Marshall. M.J.E. Baker (3-0-12-1) took a returning catch that was smashed back at him, as it became clear that had it not been for Jenner and Dobson’s innings the Ickleford total would have been more competitive than the dominant 258 for 7 posted. The Reed reply had the worst possible start as the top 4 all fell for just one run between them. Rob Willoughby then played a crucial innings first supported by Jack Hart and then later Rhodri Hughes as he took Reed past 50. Willoughby then fell caught behind for 47, leaving R. Hughes to continue the fight. His distinctive style proved successful as he worked the ball about, driving and pulling the ball. However, just as he was about to take Reed to three figures R. Hughes was bowled for a fine 25. The tail soon followed as Reed finished on 110, Steve Hughes [...]

Greenwood Park

The final game to be played at the Green in the 2011 season saw visitors Greenwood Park amass 233 for the loss of only one wicket.Reeds captain Peter Baker, in his last match in that role, won the toss and inserted the opposition. Reed only started with 8 on the field with one other arriving soon after, this disadvantage led to the opening pairing of M. Baker (no relation) and M. Nawaz putting on a huge stand of 193. Nawaz (75) fell to a catch by Rob Willoughby from the bowling of Jack Hart (5-0-29-1) who had kept a good line and got the ball moving in the air. Tom Walshingham (8-1-19-0) had also bowled well but came away empty handed as M. Baker (97*) and K. Mahbubal (17*) did some late innings damage in taking the visitors to 233 from their forty overs. The daunting target soon seemed minute as openers Sean Tidey and Matt Bowles went to work in demolishing the deficit. Tidey in particular smashed the ball to all parts of the ground as he rushed past 50. In the twelfth over Reed went to 100 but also lost Tidey for a brutal 75 (11 x 4 3x 6). P. Baker then joined Bowles and continued in the chase. Bowles took up the mantle of ‘big hitter’ and blasted the ball past the fielders registering 17 fours when he fell in the 26th over for 79 with the score on 206. This left Baker (47*) and Rob Willoughby (10*) to knock of the last few runs. A fantastic victory considering Reed only had 9 players. As stated this was Peter Baker’s final match as captain for both the Sunday Seconds and Saturday fours. In [...]

Boxmoor II

Visitors Boxmoor totalled 246 for 6 largely thanks to their young opening batsman, Alex Dukes, who scored a wonderful 142. The talented, teenaged wicket-keeper / batsman passed 1000 runs for the season in this innings which was his third century of the year before Reed’s Jack Hart bowled him. Hart added a second wicket to finish with 2 for 13. Joe Graves claimed one wicket near the end but at one point earlier on, Boxmoor were in relative difficulty at 38 for 3 after Ben Walker, Neil Haslam and Greg Marshall had each taken a wicket. In fact Haslam had figures of 1 for 6.In reply, with only three players older than 16, Reed opened with the Under 15’s Captain, Tom Walsingham, and Richie Barlow, and although the former set-off confidently, he was caught off a drive to extra cover for 14 and Reed were soon in trouble at 30 for 3.Chris Marshall then buckled down to his longest innings to date and contributed 32 to the 104 runs scored whilst he was at the wicket. More wickets had fallen at the opposite end until skipper, Peter Baker, batting at number 7, started aggressively and blasted 75 taking Reed from 56 for 5 to 168 for 7 in less than 20 overs. By this time, Jack Hart was in and he looked unfazed by the Boxmoor bowlers until Dukes, (no longer keeping wicket), returned the compliment and had him LBW for 17. Now with no chance of victory, it provided the opportunity for Joe Graves to have some fun as he scored a quick fire 17 not out which included 4 fours. This brought Reed up to a respectable 202 for 9 in their 40 [...]

Aston Away

Reeds young Sunday seconds came so very close to snaring an unlikely victory when they played away at the charming village of Aston. Peter Baker had won the toss and inserted the opposition and after 20 overs the hosts had only managed 61. Tom Walshingham (8-4-11-2) and Joe Graves (6-1-21-1) had opened the bowling and held good lines, Graves yet again hit the off stump whilst Walshingham bowled four maidens of his first six, however, there was the unlikely occurrence of 5 penalty runs being given after the ball hit the keeper’s helmet. Dominic McOmish jokingly said “If we now loose by less than 5 runs, there will be trouble!!”Jack Hart (5-0-28-0) and Rhoddri Hughes (7-0-32-0) backed up the openers by also restricting numbers 3 and 4 Wylie and O’Hanlan, however after drinks the pair started to be more aggressive with O’Hanlan punishing anything short or wide. They also took advantage of some poor and sometimes sloppy fielding as the young Reed side toiled under the sun, dropping several easy chances. Mitchell Cooper (5-1-21-1) was then brought on to break up the partnership which had now exceeded 100. Dan Howard also chipped in with 1 for 24 from his 4 overs, however, by the end of their innings Aston had reached 193 with O’Hanlan 98 not out. After tea Mitchell Cooper and Dominic McOmish opened the Reed innings with a steady 22 when McOmish (8) was bowled. Tom Walshingham then stayed with Cooper for a time before falling for 7. Reed were struggling on 69 for 5 from 16 overs when a promising partnership between Cooper and Marcus J.E. Baker was spoiled when Cooper fell for a good 26. In the 24th over Reed reached [...]

Barley Home

Reed began their Sunday friendly fixtures with the first of two annual matches against Barley. Captain Ed Blissett shared the duties with Richard Barlow in a sun-blessed Easter Sunday up at Reed. It was Barley who won the toss and elected to field, this appeared to be the correct decision as opening bowler Shah dispatched of Smith (0) and Barlow (5). Barley must be sick of the site of Sean Tidey though; the talented youngster racked up a double century last year against them and quickly made amends for a sluggish Reed start by posting (53) however it was Matt Bowles who contributed most to Reed's forty over total and set himself up nicely for the league season ahead with his first ton of 2011. Bowles was run out for 104 shortly after Lovegrove (6) had departed but more importantly the total was a healthy 222. This subsequently finished on 242 thanks to Blissett (33*) and Tidey (13*). Barley to their credit came out and had a real go at the Reed total with openers George and Bedell scoring 25 and 39 respectively. Spin bowler Jason Pallett had other ideas though. The likeable Pallett chose to play infrequently last season but announced his return to regular cricket with astonishing figures of 4-3 from eight overs! Peckett (2-27) began the wicket-taking, him and Pallett were aptly supported by other bowlers Walsingham (1-29), West (1-18), C. Martin (1-14) and even normal wicketkeeper S. Tidey (1-1) to bowl the visitors out for 159 and make the victory a real team effort with some sharp catches from supporting fielders.

Wormley III

Wormley had no hesitation in batting first on the hard and fast pitch at Freman College, Buntingford, the Reed second ground. Starting cautiously, the openers could not score freely and were restricted to only 22 runs off the first dozen overs. Young Joe Graves bowled a tight line conceding a mere 14 from his six-over spell but with a couple of chances going-down. Stalwart Christian Martin was unlucky not to take a wicket but again was economical with 0 for 24 from 12 overs. Wormley’s number 3, Armsby, was more adventurous and reached 60 after being given at least four lives by the slippery-handed Reed fielders. He finally holed-out to Alan Ward off Reece Fitzgerald’s bowling. Reece stepped-in from the Reed Under 13s and did not look out of place in “Open-Age” cricket. He bowled well within himself with accurate and well-pitched deliveries taking 3 for 52 from a 13-over spell. Towards the end of the innings, Michael Robertson, making his first appearance in Reed colours for 3 years, got some real pace and bounce from the pitch and bagged 3 for 17. Christian Martin was involved in 2 Run-outs and Joe Graves one, as Wormley were all-out for 189 off the last ball of their 47-over innings.Reed opened their reply with Peter Baker and Alan Ward, their fourth opening combination in the last four matches. Ward was out quickly which brought the in-form John Kershaw to the crease. He soon overtook Baker and his first 11 scoring shots were all boundary fours. Baker went for 43 after a second wicket partnership of 129 with Kershaw. But Reed then lost their way a little. Kershaw was out for 84, (including 18 fours), there then were [...]
