Bushey away 2003

Reed 1st XI race to Division 2, which would mark their second successive league promotion in two years was strengthened on Saturday as they crushed Bushey by 7 wickets away on Saturday. Reed was also celebrating the 2nd XI winning Division 8, ensuring a double club league victory if Simon Jackson's 1st XI beat mid-placed Harpenden IIs on Saturday. Despite returning that morning from a physically arduous club tour to Nottingham, Reed maintained their professionalism as they justified their decision to bowl first. Michael Berks (11-3-34-1) made an early breakthrough with the score on 8. William Clarke (13-4-15-3), then had opener Devan superbly caught at point by James Heslam. Clarke continued to remove their number three thanks to a sharp chance which was held by Baz Curtis at second slip, and their number 5 Zahid with a caught and bowled chance. With Berks tiring, Reed's 1st XI leading league wicket-taker Peter Tidey (14-6-26-4) assumed the mantle of responsibility beginning with a crucial wicket maiden. Exploiting some variable bounce and favourable swing conditions, he tore through the middle order with ease. With two late wickets by Richard Jerome (5.4-2-5-2), Bushey were always struggling to challenge as they amassed a paltry 94 all out. A testing spell before tea saw James Heslam (15) begin strongly, but an unpredictably low ball had him trapped LBW from opener Nabil (5-0-34-1). The tea-watchman, William Clarke, again promoted from his regular number 9 position to 3, came in with the score on 15-1. He partnered Tom Fulk (6) before the interval, until Fulk was unlucky to be adjudged LBW the over before tea. After tea, Clarke (41*) strengthened his position and opened his shoulders as he capitalised on some overpitched deliveries, [...]

Botany Bay Away 2003

Reed slumped to an unlikely 53 run away defeat on Saturday as Botany Bay ended their unbeaten run in League cricket since June last year. Reed still remain top of Division 3 despite the loss, 5 points clear of second placed Redbourn. Having won the toss on a damp wicket, Reed were confident of skittling the opposition cheaply. Opening bowler William Clarke (7-1-26-1) made an early breakthrough, but struggled to find his length bowling to J.Sherring (28). It took a mammoth effort by Peter Tidey (26-9-64-5), to breakthrough thanks to some sharp wicketkeeping by Stuart Smith with 2 catches and a stumping. In conjunction with Richard Jerome (14&Mac247;4-30-2), Reed reduced the opposition to an achievable target, despite some aggressive strokeplay by M.Steele (25) and S.Hunt (34), which saw them claw back to 144 for 9 off their 53 overs. Reed's response began in a disappointing manner as B.Rose (10-7-14-5) removed both Reed openers and the middle order cheaply. With their backs against the wall, heavy reliance was placed on gritty innings by Stuart Smith (19) and Gary Bridge (26), who also played some scintillating strokes to all corners. However, D.Wilkinson (11-2-39-3) ended their rebellion as two LBW appeals saw the umpire&Mac226;s finger raised. The tail of Richard Johnson (12*), Michael Berks (6) and Peter Tidey (10) fought hard, but in vain, as the league-leaders capitulated for a meagre 91 and a paltry 4 points. Despite the loss, Reed remained up-beat, as skipper Simon Jackson commented : "We still are top of the league, and we see this as a blip in our League crusade from which we can learn a lot. A loss, at some point, was inevitable, and we probably needed it to keep [...]

Bishop Stortford II Home 2003

Reed further strengthened their bid for league promotion on Saturday as they registered their third successive Division 3 victory over Bishops Stortford IIs at home. The win consolidates their third position, and tightens the top-of-the-table struggle against Hertford IIs and St. Albans IIs. It also marks the third successive weekend where Reed 1st XI and 2nd XI have registered maximum points. Simon Jackson, winning the toss, chose to bat, which proved to be the correct decision as James Heslam, in his first league innings having recovered from a nasty finger injury, build a useful 62, in conjunction with Tom Fulk (34). The Stortford openers were particularly punished by the pair. However, once they were removed, Chris Jackson (43*) and Richard Jerome (90*) were able to take hold of the bowling attack, and amass a huge 231 declared off 46 overs. M.Bashford (18-6-75-0) bowled some particularly testing left arm spin, and was certainly the pick of the Stortford bowlers. The declaration always gave Stortford a sporting chance, which their top order relished as they began in flamboyant style as they began on a very positive not, despatching the Reed opening bowlers to all corners of the park. Opener M.Leaver (39) played some particularly powerful shots until he was adjudged run-out when pushing for a misconceived single in the covers. The slower bowlers, Peter Tidey (14-2-47-4) and Richard Jerome (16.3-10-25-1) managed to extract more from the Reed wicket, as they slowed the scoring rate and took crucial wickets. Every Stortford batsman chipped in, particularly M.Bashford who amassed 50* in very few overs striking 16 in 3 balls at one point to keep the visitors in with a chance. However, with opener Berks (11-1-73-2) coming back from snatch [...]

Therfield 2002

In a 40 over a side game on Sunday Reed played host to Therfield. Therfield won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a good start with father and son partnership of Matt and Ken Ayre putting on 108 for the first wicket. However, once Matt was out for 66 wickets fell consistently leaving Reed chasing a target of just 167 to win. The wicket takers for Reed being Heslam and the impressive Tufton with two a piece. In reply Reed never really got going and lost wickets at regular intervals. However at 73-3 and 93-4 they looked well set never requiring more than 4 and a half an over. Eventually though the frequency of wickets falling told with the home side gradually losing momentum to their innings which closed on 120 in the 38th over. Clarke(23) Blissett(26) and M.Robertson(21) all made starts. Chris Ward took 5-28 for Therfield.

Much Hadham 2002

Reed Sunday team played host to Much Hadham who won the toss and elected to bat first. On a flat wicket they got off to a steady start but never cut loose as Jim Allsopp 12-3-22-2 and Neil Haslam 10 overs for 28 kept things tight. Allsopp being particularly impressive bowling straight and fast in his long opening spell down the hill. Support bowlers Tufton, Heslam and first team paceman Clarke each took wickets as Much Hadham closed their innings on 149-8 much owed to a good fifty by their number 5 batsman Jarret. In reply Reed made a reasonable start with Clarke and Blissett reaching double figures. However, neither went on and Reed lost two more wickets to be 42-4. However this brought Heslam to the crease who played a captains innings scoring 60 in a stand of 96 with Roger Bowcock to all but see Reed home. The remaining few runs were knocked off and reed celebrated a 5 wicket victory with 15 overs to spare.

Cheshunt 2002

On Sunday Reed were beaten by Cheshunt in the Becker Cup by the batting performance of the classy Sam Stevenson. Reed started well with early break throughs from Pete Tidey and Michael Berks. Tidey bowled tightly, finishing his 10 overs with 1 for 18. However even with wickets falling at regular intervals Stevenson raced to a chanceless 50 and then quickly after to his ton and his 400th competitive game run of the season without being dismissed! James Heslam (3 for 53) became the first bowler to dismiss Stevenson this season, for 108 as Cheshunt finished on 219 from their 50 overs. In reply Cheshunt bowled tightly knowing the conditions as Reed lost early wickets. With Gary Bridge batting solidly and showing the class that he bought to Reed, Reed always had a chance. However once Bridge had gone for 43, Reed never looked like winning despite and interesting last wicket partnership from Pete Tidey and Jamie Kingshott.

Northampton Exciles Away 2003

Reed 1st XI continued their fine run of league form on Saturday, retaining their top position in Herts League division 3, by thrashing Northampton Exiles away by 8 wickets. Electing to field, Reed's bowling attack bowled tightly throughout restricting the home side to 78 all out off 52.2 overs. Michael Berks (10-2-16-1) made a crucial breakthrough in the twelfth over, with a spectacular one handed caught and bowled. The other opener, William Clarke (14-6-23-2) also made inroads, with a lengthy, but accurate, swing bowling spell. Exiles failed to gather any momentum, particularly when Reed's most experienced swing bowler, Peter Tidey (19-5-25-3), caused a run-drought in tandem with spinner Richard Jerome (9.2-4-8-3). Tom Fulk starred in the field with three tough catches and a sharp run-out to end their innings. Reed's response was typically sturdy as they reached the total in 27.2 overs for the loss of two wickets. Chris Jackson built a solid 22 before being bowled by L.Robertson (14-7-26-2), but it was Baz Curtis who was the core of the innings, as he grafted a patient 32 not out seeing Reed to their fourth successive League victory of the season. Simon Jackson, Reed's skipper, was delighted: "...once again, I'm thrilled with our team performance...we hope to carry this through to the National Village Cup as well. There's a buzz of excitement throughout the club as a result of our success to date in the League and Cup competition which is feeding our confidence" Reed 2nd XI was not as lucky, despite bowling Exiles' 2nd XI out for a paltry 61. Their chances of completing a fourth successive 60 point weekend for the club were scuppered by the weather, as rain forced a premature end [...]

Northwood Town Away 2003

Reed 1st XI kicked off their Division 3 Herts League campaign with a bang on Saturday by resoundingly crushing Northwood Town by 35 runs. Having lost the toss, Reed batted on a pitch which offered some extremely variable, almost dangerous, bounce. Northwood Town drew early blood as Doling (6-37) despatched James Heslam early, leaving them on 5-1. Chris Jackson (7) and Michael Curtis (21) managed to settle the ship, until Doling tore through the middle order by exploiting the bounce, reducing Reed to 49 for 7. Stuart Smith's 20 revived some respectability to the scorecard, but the tail were unable to support him, and after being questionably adjudged LBW, Reed's effort flopped to a disappointing 74 all out. Yet, with demons still in the pitch, and a formidable bowling attack which helped spearhead their promotion last season, Reed's skipper, Simon Jackson, was always confident that Reed could defend their total. His prediction proved correct as Reed took the field before tea and managed to exploit some of the variability that dogged their innings. William Clarke (1-12) removed their opener for a duck, but it was Reed stalwart, and leading league wicket taker Peter Tidey (5-19) who profited by bagging 3 wickets before tea, and a further 2 afterwards. He was partnered by Michael Berks (4-8), whose accuracy and venomous pace managed to also exploit the bounce. The Northwood men had no answer to Berks and Tidey, as they adopted a policy of attack. Several ambitious shots were cut short by sharp catches in the slips by Richard Jerome (on his league debut for the club), or on the boundary by James Heslam, Simon Jackson and Chris Jackson. The fielding superbly supported the bowlers to maintain [...]

Potton away 2003

Reed further strengthened their bid for the Division 3 title and promotion on Saturday, just one year after claiming the Division 4 crown, as they demolished Potton Town by 9 wickets away. Over running the oppositions with 22 overs to spare, Reed remain in poll position above 2nd placed Hertford IIs and 3rd placed St. Albans IIs, who are due to face each other next weekend. With St.Albans IIs losing away at Botany Bay, the chances of a Hertford/Reed promotion combo are reinforced. Potton demise began as soon as they elected to bat on a bowling friendly wicket with heavy cloud cover and muggy conditions. The Reed bowlers immediately had the hosts reduced to 0 for 1 after opener William Clarke (12-6-27-3) struck in his first over. Despite some emergency work by N.Gradall (10) and A.Webb (14) stabilising the situation, Potton were in dire straits after Michael Berks (13-3-32-2) bowled the former with an unplayable delivery in a spell which was marked by tireless consistency in oppressive conditions. Clarke then succeeded in removing the latter thanks to a magnificent one-handed diving catch by wicket keeper Stuart Smith. The second round of bowlers then assumed the mantle of responsibility, as Richard Jerome (12-0-35-3), once again bowling with canny flight, managed to snare the top-scorer, M.Waker (33), at mid-on along with two other Potton men. Ever-reliant Reed war-horse, Peter Tidey (16-5-43-1), picked up a single wicket to leave the hosts floundering on 143 for 9 off their 53 overs. Chris Jackson ended the innings with three catches. Potton never threatened to raise the run rate above that which was achieved, and their attempts to accelerate it resulted in poorly executed shots from which Reed took their opportunities. [...]
