After being put into the field Reed were very lack lustre in the
field. Their was a real end of season feel to this performance. Simon
Roberts bowled tightly at the beginning conceding just 17 runs from 5
overs. he was well supported by the senior duo of Ian Roberts and
Clive Collins. Both gave little away, in fact less the 30 a piece in
8 overs. Reed pegged back Langford after they got a good start.
Kirkham was the real thorn in Reed’s side. he scored 67 and we the
third man out with the score on 103. Reed quickly made that 4 wickets
just 5 runs later. It was then that Simpson took a shine to the spin
of Mark Peart taking 18 from one over. Peart responded well by taking
Simpson’s wicket plus 2 more. In the end Langford posted a
challenging 178 to win.
Unfortunately Reed lost both openers before 30 runs were on the
board. They never really recovered from this. Simon Jackson looked in
good form yet again, but was well caught when he had score 18. James
Heslam also scored 18 when looking good. Stuart McDonald making his
Reed debut scored 19 and fell into the trap of getting out when well
set. Although at this point Reed did runs quickly. Michael Davenport
was also making his debut and he made a big impact. He smashed a
quick 50 and gave Reed a glimmer of hope, but Reed never got ahead of
the run rate and in the end were 10 runs light.
Goodness me Baz, this only seems like a few years ago – not 16!!!
