Keatley Cup Final 1985

Reed lifted the Keatley Cup for the third year in succession on Tuesday night in a nail biting finish on the Heath. The village side always looked comfortable but they left it late to score the winning runs — reaching their target with just two balls left. Earlier, Royston had scored steadily but their total of 103 never looked like being enough to take the game. Nigel Gadsby top scored with 33 Simon Bishop adding 24 but it took a partnership between Gerry Grote (18) and Doug Collard (13) to take the score into three figures.
All of Reed’s bowlers produced economical figures with Clive Collins claiming 2-21.
Matthew Gray notched up an early scalp when he cleaned bowled the ever dangerous Brian Bevan for eight. But then Peter King (13) and John Heslam (39) boosted the total and set Reed on the road to victory. Richard Apperley (19) made a vital contribution to the total but it was left to Richie Robertson and Mike Taylor to get the winning runs.
In a drama-drenched last over they edged ever closer to the Royston total before Robertson gave his side the trophy with a four in the dying moments of the game.
