Reed 2nd XI v Eversholt II - League - 14/8/04 - Away
Reed won the toss and invited Flitwick to bat on a damp wicket and slow outfield. Jim Allsopp struck twice to have Flitwick in trouble at 18-2 but Brook and Moss staged something of a recovery taking the score to 51 before Moss was wall caught by Alan Ward in the deep for 29. From this point on Reed dominated with all the bowlers keeping a tight line and well supported by excellent ground fielding. Wickets fell at regular intervals most to Ian Roberts who bolwed an excellent spell of 13 overs, 5-19. Richard Robertson 2-25 and Jason Archer 1-5 also chipped in as Flitwick succumbed to 89 all out. The was there to be won and Reed were never in danger of failing to take the match. Paul Watts 31 and Sturat Smith 17 nout out scored the majority of the runs with Flitwick contributing to their own downfall in conceding 30 extras. Despite a few lapses in concentration Reed won comfortably by 5 wickets to get their new season off to a flying start. They are joint top of Herts League Division 7 with 50 points.
Reed 2nd XI v Graveley - League - 21/8/04 - Home
This 'see-saw' match ended in high drama that almost copied the Redd 1st XI tie! Reed won the toss and batted, but not for the first time this season lost early wickets and were struggling at 19-2. Paul Watts 17 and Skipper John Heslam 26 steadied the ship and took the score to 60 before both fell in quick succession as excellent Crusader bowling and fielding kept the pressure on. Wickets fell regularly with only Peter Baker 18 and Jason Archer 18 making double figures as Reed slid to a disappointing 138 all out. However Reed have been an awesome bowling unit in recent years and despite missing regular opener Jim Allsopp they quickly made an impact. Ian Roberts made excellent use of the swing bowling conditions and removed Crusaders batsmen with a very tight spell. His 18 overs 6-29 saw Crusaders reduced to 65-9 and Reed seemed poised for victory. However opener Horden had stood firm as all about him failed and he began to take the attack to Reed in a quest for an unlikely Crusaders victory. Reed did not miss any actual chances and enjoyed little luck and the score mounted to the stage where Crusaders needed 4 town off the last over with Reed still needing one wicket for victory. Roberts had been called back into the attack for a second spell and bowled 5 dot balls leaving no 11 Jewell requiring 4 off the last ball. Two runs wore struck leaving Horden stranded on 86 not out and the match drawn with only 1 run seperating the sides after 100 overs of cricket.
Reed won the toss and batted, but were put on the back foot when Watts and Fulk went cheaply leaving them 17-2. Steve Dunn promoted up the order to stem the rot combined well with Alan Ward to take the score past 60 before a hamstring pull forced Dunn to retire hurt for 19. Skipper Heslam then joined the by now rampant Ward at the crease and the pair put real impetus behind the Reed innings scoring at will in all areas. Ward eventually fell for 70 with the score 139-3 whilst Heslam continued until unluckily caught on a rebound at slip for 40 with the score at 164. A mini collapse to 166-6 saw Reed falter until Jim Allsopp 22*, Jason Archer 10 and Ian Roberts 5* saw the visitors to maximum batting bonus points at 204 for 7 in their 53 overs. Hatfield made a steady start and reached 100-2 seeming well placed to challenge the Reed total, but thight bowling from Roberts 3-46 and Wholley 2-31 built the pressure and the introduction of 'Golden Arm' Jason Archer saw Hatfield innings really crumble. Good ground fielding and sharp catching saw Reed seize the initiative but Hatfield hung on to earn a draw at 166-9. Reed took 19 points and remain in third place in their division.
