Reed win on penalties!

In an exciting climax to the First XI fixture, Jack Tidey hit his first ball for 6 to win the match with two balls to spare. However, Old Owens conceded 5 penalty runs when Whitworth feigned to throw a non-existent ball to put off the runners in a tight call. Was that the difference between the sides at the end? The home side set off like a train taking 65 without loss from the power play. It was the introduction of Zac McGuigan which started the fight back as he took the first 3 wickets, including the dangerous Whitworth for 69. At 142-3 with 20 overs remaining a big total looked likely until an inspired spell of 10 overs by Toby Fynn (5-26) including 3 catches by keeper Richard Wharton, turned the course of the innings. McGuigan returned to bowl the last two batsmen, helping himself to a 'five-fer' (9.3-2-30-5) as well. Old Owens made 189 all out from 46 overs. Old Owens won Division 1 last year on the back of an excellent bowling attack and they proved very difficult to score against. As a result Reed found themselves 77-5 from 25 overs with only Rob Lankester playing fluently until the reverse sweep was his downfall yet again for 28. James Heslam and Richard Wharton then dug in for a gritty partnership of 47 until Heslam was caught for a patient 42. Wharton continued as anchor while Sean Tidey hit a belligerent run a ball 28 in an invaluable stand of 50. With 16 still required from two overs it was left to Wharton (34 not out) and Jack Tidey to squeeze home (190-8) in an exciting finish, leaving Owens ruing those unnecessary penalty [...]

Comfortable victory in the Village Cup

After one 1st Round victory and two concessions, Reed found themselves matched against Preston in the Herts & Beds Regional Final of the National Village Cup on Sunday at Reed. Batting first, Preston didn’t cope with Jack Tidey’s aggressive spell of 8 overs in which he rocked the visitors by taking 3 for 16. Opener Morecroft survived to make 24 then later Hill (30), Kenna (24) and Murrell (26) tried to build a defendable total, but with further wickets falling regularly to Karl Ward (2) and Sean Tidey (2), Preston were able only to reach 149 for 8 in their 40 overs. After the interval, William Heslam looked intent on attack and quickly out-scored partner, Richard Wharton, before losing his off stump to Murrell’s spinner. Heslam had made 28 of the 46 opening partnership but the second wicket then added 92 when Rob Lankester came in at number 3. He became one of Walker’s 2 wickets but not before hitting a scintillating 60, of which 44 were in boundaries. All the while, Wharton was compiling a solid half-century of his own and was out for 52 just when the scores were levelled. It required Chris Jackson to knock the winning single accompanied by Stuart Smith who did not need to face a delivery. Reed won comfortably in the 34th over by 7 wickets. In the next round, Reed will represent Herts & Beds against Foxton who won the Cambs & Norfolk Group thanks to a concession by their opponents from Fordham. That match is scheduled for Sunday 25th June starting at 1pm at Foxton. This fixture promises to be a close encounter for local bragging rights in the Village Cup; after all Foxton were beaten [...]

Reed ease into the last 16 of the National Village Cup

Reed took on the challenge of facing previous finalists Findon at the Green on Sunday in the last 32 of the National Village Cup. Reed skipper Tom Greaves was pleasantly surprised when he abnormally lost the toss and was invited to bowl after a week of heavy rain. Reed opened up with Karl Ward (9-3-26-3) and Mitchell Cooper (9-0-41-3) both looking to take advantage of the beneficial conditions early on. However Findon opener Bridson had other ideas scoring a quick fire 22 immediately putting the hosts under pressure. However with his bullish style of play there was always going to be chances and Cooper had him trapped bang in front in the fourth over. This then led to a flurry of wickets and Findon fell to 49-6 after their promising start. Reed then failed to capitalize on this strong position and Findon cautiously limped their way to 142 with Manser (39 n.o.) and Smith (36) providing the resistance. This was helped by some tight bowling from Greaves (9-3-29-0), Martin (8-1-27-0) and Fitzgerald (5-1-18-1). This left Reed requiring 143 for a place in the last 16. After losing an early wicket against the new ball Reed never looked in too much trouble with the inform William Heslam (20) and the talented youngster Rob Lankester (26) removing the early pressure. Heslam was then removed after miscuing a drive to mid-wicket which bought the ever reliable Chris Jackson (20) to the crease. Lankester was dismissed not long after and which allowed skipper Greaves (16) to provide the crowd with some entertainment with a quick cameo. Jackson and Greaves were then dismissed in quick succession leaving Reed under pressure at 89-5 still needing 54 to win. Village Cup veterans [...]
