Top-of-the-table Totteridge Millhillians held their nerve as the Heslam Brothers valiantly chased the target of 263. William scored 81 and James 51 but then wickets fell regularly and when Sean Tidey departed for an exciting 41, the games was up as the Firsts were all-out for 235. Sean Tidey and Phil Lill had earlier taken 3 wickets each. The Seconds had no difficulty completing the double over Welwyn Garden City on The Green. In a most spectacular innings, Rob Lankester notched-up a maiden century and finished undefeated on 130 out of Reed’s total of 247 for 3. Ian Osborne supported with a sixty. The old firm of Pete Tidey and Karl Ward took 4 wickets each as WGC were bowled out within 29 overs for 101. There was a much-needed thirty-pointer for the Thirds away at Northwood Town. On a pitch of contrasting characteristics, the hosts managed only 91. Down-the-hill Mike Robertson snaffled 4 for 17 before Rich Barlow (24) and Pete Baker (40) put-on 68 for Reed’s first wicket and set them on the path to victory by 5 wickets and another double over their opponents. The Fourths were at Freman Oval against Hatfield Hyde who batted first and closed on 219 for 9. Completing another double, Reed won comfortably by 5 wickets with both Maseeh Naeem and Bill Mansfield reaching scores in the eighties. The Fourths remain top of the Division. The Sunday XI did not score enough runs away at Ashwell. Chris West's best effort of 29 not out gave Reed the chance to defend a total of 141 but Ashwell lost only 3 wickets in pursuit, 2 of them to skipper MJE Baker. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB

Headlines – 25th / 26th July

Despite the prolonged rainfall on Friday / Saturday, only 5 matches out of the entire programme of 133 Herts League matches were cancelled. The new covers at Reed are proving their worth, and the old-style ground sheet covers were employed at Freman College which meant matches began on time. At Reed, the Firsts had a well-earned victory over old rivals, Botany Bay, and moved one position up the Championship Table. There were 3 wickets each for Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn as the Bay were restricted to 203 all-out. Then slowly but surely, Reed made the required target in the 60th over. Chris Jackson provided the glue to the innings making 65 not out as Reed lost 7 wickets on their way to the win. One of the 5 games cancelled was Welwyn Garden City’s home match versus Old Cholmeleians in Division 5B. Old Cs were top of the table prior to yesterday’s round of matches, but by being awarded only 10 points for their “No Result”, Reed Seconds were able to leap-frog them once they had demolished Ickleford for 82 and won by 6 wickets. They are now in 1st place with a lead of 8 points. The bowling credits go to Pete Tidey and Karl Ward who again had 3 wickets each, then Rob Lankester remained calm at the crease to score 39 not out as Reed overhauled the target within 22 overs. In the Third’s match against Great Gaddesden at the Freman Oval, the visitors scored an under par 222 for 9 in their 53 overs. 3 wickets fell to Will Stock who then scored 67 in the run chase that followed. Old-timer Peter Baker hit 62 but from a good position [...]

Headlines – 18th / 19th July

West Herts won the toss and invited the 1st XI to bat. Scoring 196 all-out, the 1sts had a comfortable 31 run victory as W-H were bowled out for 165. Phil Lill was in the wickets again. The Firsts are 6th in the Championship now. Marcus Martin’s 2nd XI marched on with a home win against lowly Wheathampstead. The visitors were shot-out for only 76. There were 3 wickets each for Pete Tidey & Karl Ward, and 2 wickets each for Marcus Martin & Tom Walsingham. Ed Garrott (42 not out) and Richard Johnson (31 n.o.) had no difficulty knocking off the required 77 runs in only 10 overs to win by 10 wickets. The 2nds retain second place in Division 5B. The Thirds travelled to Harpenden where they won the toss and batted first. Baz Curtis and Matt Bowles reached the thirties and later Owen Hughes and Adrian Woodcock boosted the total to 179 for 9 in an undefeated 10th wicket partnership of 64 as the innings closed. Reed earned some welcome bonus points as Harpenden lost 7 wickets before they reached their target, four of them falling to Swetank Khambhat. The 4th XI did not have a league fixture and their friendly against Mayfield was cancelled. However, their position at the top of the Division was unaffected. On Sunday, the visiting Chigwell bowlers restricted Reed to 169 for 8 but then found runs hard to find themselves as they reached only 109 in reply. Reed's captain, Marcus Baker, had led the way with 66 not out with the bat and Jack Tidey took 4 for 14 with the ball. Last Wednesday, Foxton beat Reed in the Keatley Cup Final which was played at [...]

Charlie steps-up as the Under 11s win at Foxton

Wow, Reed U11s needed 2 wickets off the last over to win and to concede no runs against Foxton U11s on Thursday. Charlie Walters was given the honour to bowl it. Crucially, 4 dot balls followed by a Bowled on the penultimate ball left one wicket needed off the last delivery. And he Bowled him! Two-in-Two off the last 2 balls for victory. Amazing! Charlie ended with figures of 3-14 off 3 overs. Remarkably he is only 8-years-old. Well-done the Under 11s.

Chipolatas beat Pickles! Quiz result.

The summer Quiz took place on Friday with five teams participating. The "Braughing Chipolatas" won a close fought contest and "One in the Pickle Barrel" came second. In a kind gesture, the B-Cs (the Walsingham and Hughes families) donated their prize money to the Club – thank you. Thanks also go to Professor Matt Bowles who organized the event and asked the questions - (with a little assistance from his advisers at Google).

Headlines – 11th / 12th July

All four of Reed’s sides batted first on Saturday but only the Seconds managed not to lose. They drew. The Firsts were at home to Shenley Village and scored 156. The visitors lost 5 wickets in overhauling that total within 20 overs. In the “double header”, the Seconds were away at Shenley Village. Phil Frenay and Marcus Baker hit fifties in Reed’s 234 for 9 but that score appeared too much for Shenley to chase as they batted out 47 overs reaching only 130 for 6. A couple of late wickets gave Reed an extra few points; Reed 16 points, SV 9 points. At the Freman Oval, the Thirds were all-out in the 45th over for an undefendable 175. Top of the table Berkhamsted had a dozen overs to spare when they won although Reed had taken 7 wickets in the process. The Fourths had their first loss of the League season at Elstree against Hatch End. Being inserted, the Fourths set off like an express train with thirties from Martin Johnson, Zac Conley and Michael Catt but eventually declared when the score was 178 for 8. In reply, Hatch End batted for 42 overs when they reached their target. Neil Haslam took 3 of the 5 wickets to fall. Despite this defeat, Reed remain in 1st position in the Division. The Sunday XI fared better at the Green in between the odd shower. Reduced to 32 overs per innings, Reed totted-up 178 for 7. Leading the way were Mitchell Cooper, (38), Owen Hughes, (42), and Rob Lankester, (32). Knebworth Blues responded with 150 for 7 giving Reed a win by 28 runs. On Thursday the 9th, the Mid-Week XI had played and lost to [...]

T-Ms’ mixed XI prove too strong for Reed’s Fourths

This week Reed 4th XI took a break from league fixtures, to play an away 45/45 friendly against a Totteridge Milhillians side, who were scouting the strength of the lower divisions with a view of entering a team into the same league next season. Clear blue skies greeted Reed who won the toss and skipper Bowman opted to bowl first. With Julien Fynn (7-2-11-0) and Zac Conley (9-0-42-0) opening the bowling, the opposition found it hard to find runs on a large boundary with a slow outfield. However wickets were also difficult to find, and the Totteridge opening partnership of M. Pratt (15) and Bhardia (42) slowly put runs on the board. The first breakthrough came after a change of bowling, with Kieren Willoughby catching a loose shot from Bhardia off Mansfield’s (7-0-49-1) bowling and Reed’s new man Martin Johnson (9-1-32-1) introducing himself to the club bowling tight lines and dismissing M. Pratt. As the runs ticked over Reed still couldn’t find the wickets, not helped by two regulation catches being dropped by a returning player. More changes of bowling brought on another debutant, Ewan Rees (6-0-20-0), and returning spinner, M.H. Naeem (7-0-40-3). Despite 3 wickets from Naeem and a run-out from some quick fielding by Willoughby, the hosts managed to bat out their 45 overs putting on 224-6. Following a tea which was supplemented by left-overs from a party next door, openers P. Baker and S. Hoye looked to put together a partnership on which Reed could build upon. Hoye (14) was first to go after 10 overs, run out after looking for a quick single. This was the catalyst for a mini collapse as Baker (18) was bowled, then G. Adams (0) was [...]

Headlines – 4th / 5th July

I am sure that you will join me in wishing our Clubmate, Steve Hoye, a speedy recovery after he was taken ill during the Fourth XI match away against Totteridge Millhillians. Steve had just returned to the changing-room after his innings when he felt unwell necessitating the attendance of paramedics. Steve was later taken by ambulance to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead. Maseeh Naeem is acting as family liaison and reported on Saturday night that after treatment Steve will likely be kept in hospital for observation for a few days. Get well soon Steve. On the pitch, things did not go too well for Reed either. All four teams lost on Saturday! The Firsts had a good first half when they dismissed Stevenage for 155. Unfortunately, Stevenage bowled Reed out for just 108 in the 34th over. Old Cholmeleians beat the Seconds on the Green in this top-of-the-table clash. Scoring 212 for 9, (well within range of the free-scoring Reedsters), the OCs then had Reed all-out for a disappointing 139 in the 39th over, Marcus Baker top-scoring with 45. Next week, Reed will play third-placed Shenley Village. There was a late-finishing nail-biter at Freman College as the Thirds just failed to clinch victory against Waltham Cross Rosedale. Led by Richie Barlow’s 85, then needing just 3 runs to overtake the visitors’ 226 for 7, the last wicket fell when the score was on an agonising 224. Earlier Aiden Woodcock had earned 3 wickets for Reed. On a non-league day for the Fourth XI, they travelled to Barnet to play a friendly against Totteridge Millhillians 4th XI. In his first match of the season, Matthew Naeem took 3 wickets as the hosts reached 224 for [...]
