Teeboon fireworks do for Hertford

Reed 2nds came back from their trip to Hertford 3rds this weekend with an emphatic victory. Stand-in skipper Ward had little hesitation in electing to bat in the hot Hertfordshire sun. Bowles (30) and Johnson (57) got Reed off to an excellent start as they carefully negotiated the new ball. The pair put on 83 for the first wicket before Bowles picked out the man on the long on boundary. Johnson was joined by Ed Garrott (17) and soon passed fifty in typically elegant fashion before a mix up left Johnson run out. Garrott then fell having looked set and Reed were in danger of losing their impetus. Enter George Teeboon (78) who plundered the Hertford change bowlers all over Balls Park, ably supported by the in form George Garrott (31). The pair took the score from 123-3 in the 31st over to 220 in the 42nd over when Garrott was out caught. Teeboon fell soon after, caught & bowled, but the damage was done by this point. There was still time for Ward (28) to play a cameo role with the bat as Reed got to 274-9 declared off of 49 Overs. With 51 overs to chase Reed's total, the last thing the hosts needed were early wickets. However, Joe Graves (10-2-28-3) struck in only the 3rd over thanks to a sharp catch by keeper Tim Tidey. A calamitous run out soon followed before Ed Garrott took a spectacular catch at gulley off of Graves to leave Hertford 31-3. Ward (6-1-20-2) and the returning Julien Fynn struck (8.4-1-29-2) thanks to some great catching by Rob Willoughby. Matt Bowles (7-1-29-1) and George Garrott (4-1-15-1) also got in on the action. A few spurned chances from [...]

Sean’s all-round showing topples table toppers

Reed became the first team this season to defeat league leaders, West Herts, with a strong all-round performance. However, Sean Tidey caught the eye by top scoring with 46 not out coming in at no.9, keeping to the opening bowlers, pouching a catch at slip and tying down the middle order with 2-28 from 13 overs. After two quick dismissals to the fiery Will Jones (15-3-47-4) Ed Wharton (35) and Chris Jackson (31) rebuilt the Reed innings, only for their demises in consecutive overs. This left Stuart Smith (42) to maintain some impetus, but when he was joined by Tidey with 124-7 on the board, the match seemed lost. Together they scored steadily and, even with Smith’s dismissal, a quick-fire undefeated 14 from 7 balls by Toby Fynn enabled Tidey and Reed to reach a respectable 199-9 against a formidable attack containing two county bowlers. West Herts’s openers started brightly, but Ed Wharton (2-34) and Jack Tidey (1-26) breached their defences, which led to the regular fall of wickets to Sean Tidey and Toby Fynn (8-1-35-3). Tom Greaves, who had marshalled his bowling attack skilfully, wrapped up the innings with two late wickets. Mention must also be made of some excellent leg side catches by Rob Lankester (3) and Matt Sampson (2), whilst Chris Jackson, deputising for Tidey behind the stumps, snaffled a brace of his own. West Herts were dismissed for 132, leaving Reed with a comfortable 67 run winning margin and moving them up to fourth in the table. Report submitted by Peter Wholley

Comfortable victory in the Village Cup

After one 1st Round victory and two concessions, Reed found themselves matched against Preston in the Herts & Beds Regional Final of the National Village Cup on Sunday at Reed. Batting first, Preston didn’t cope with Jack Tidey’s aggressive spell of 8 overs in which he rocked the visitors by taking 3 for 16. Opener Morecroft survived to make 24 then later Hill (30), Kenna (24) and Murrell (26) tried to build a defendable total, but with further wickets falling regularly to Karl Ward (2) and Sean Tidey (2), Preston were able only to reach 149 for 8 in their 40 overs. After the interval, William Heslam looked intent on attack and quickly out-scored partner, Richard Wharton, before losing his off stump to Murrell’s spinner. Heslam had made 28 of the 46 opening partnership but the second wicket then added 92 when Rob Lankester came in at number 3. He became one of Walker’s 2 wickets but not before hitting a scintillating 60, of which 44 were in boundaries. All the while, Wharton was compiling a solid half-century of his own and was out for 52 just when the scores were levelled. It required Chris Jackson to knock the winning single accompanied by Stuart Smith who did not need to face a delivery. Reed won comfortably in the 34th over by 7 wickets. In the next round, Reed will represent Herts & Beds against Foxton who won the Cambs & Norfolk Group thanks to a concession by their opponents from Fordham. That match is scheduled for Sunday 25th June starting at 1pm at Foxton. This fixture promises to be a close encounter for local bragging rights in the Village Cup; after all Foxton were beaten [...]

Below par Reed Thirds suffer Defeat

Reed Thirds had a disappointing trip to Hatfield Hyde with a five-wicket defeat. Having won the toss Reed batted first and made gradual progress with Peter Baker looking to be positive. After Baker's loss for 29 he was followed by Bill Mansfield (24). But the mainstay was Paul Garrott whose season-long good form saw him make his third half century of the year. Jack Childs also found some welcome batting form as Reed closed in on 200. However, after the loss of both Garrott (67) and Childs (30) Reed's incoming batsmen struggled to get Hatfield Hyde’s bowlers away who throughout had bowled well, supported by good ground fielding. Contributions from M.J.E. Baker (11), Rhodri Hughes (12) and Maseeh Naeem (14 not out) got Reed their full batting points but it was a below par final score of 206 for 6. Reed got right into the hosts in the second innings with three quick wickets falling to Matt Yates (2 for 49) and Josh Conley (1 for 42). However after that, Reed failed to capitalise. Good Batting from Bajaj (51) and Jayasekera (81) took the game away from Reed. Wickets to Steve Hughes (1 for 39) and M.J.E. Baker (1 for 46) later in the piece at least gave Reed some extra bonus points but none the less it was disappointment as the Hyde reached their target with only 5 wickets lost. Captain Greaves shocks Hoddesdon

Tom Greaves played a captain’s innings of 90 to overhaul Hoddesdon’s daunting total of 245 all out. Coming in at 76-4, he set about the recovery in a partnership of 87 with Stuart Smith (48). When Smith was narrowly run out trying to up the scoring rate, Marcus Martin (26 not out) joined Greaves in another big stand of 79. The latter smashed 6 maximums out of the ground and was caught one-handed on the boundary going for the winning runs. Instead Michael Robertson toe-ended a straight drive over the ropes first ball to give Reed an unexpected victory with four overs to spare. At first, Ed Wharton (24) and Rob Lankester (32) had looked well set, but Jamie Curtis (16-2-56-3) gave Hoddesdon the early momentum. In Hoddesdon’s innings, knocks of 48 by captain Rob Walters and 62 by South African Jayden Broodryk seemed to have given them the impetus, but astute spin bowling brought Greaves and Marcus Martin 2 wickets apiece and Sean Tidey, the pick of the attack, with figures of 14-1-54-4. Toby Fynn cleaned up 2 more, including the dangerous Brooderyk. With 249-6, Reed won by 4 wickets.

Reed 2s fall short at Broxbourne

Reed 2s fell just short in a close game away at Broxbourne 2s on Saturday. The day started well for Reed as stand in captain Karl Ward won the toss and inserted the hosts, a decision that looked to have paid off after one over as veteran Peter Tidey (10-2-31-3) removed both Robinson and Ferguson to leave Broxbourne reeling on 1-2. Both wickets courtesy of sharp catches in the slips by Rhodri Hughes and George Garrott. Any hopes Reed had of removing the home side cheaply soon evaporated however, as Humphries (40) and O'Sullivan (50) counter attacked to great effect. Tidey eventually removed Humphries, but number 5 Kay (65) batted sensibly as Broxbourne built steadily. The introduction of Alex Kelly (10-0-44-1) and the wily spin of Matt Bowles (10-1-32-1) slowed the rate and Bowles soon picked up the wicket of O'Sullivan. Some late order hitting from Kay, Preston and Pegg got the hosts over 200, but Ward (9-1-43-2) returned to take late wickets alongside Garrott (1.3-0-7-2) to finish the innings off at 205 all out. Reed's reply got off to a stuttering start as Bowles and Richard Johnson both fell cheaply to leave the visitors on 30-2. Richard Barlow (39) and Garrott (52) rebuilt well and took the score beyond one hundred before Barlow fell LBW to Gore. When Rhodri Hughes fell cheaply, Mikey Robertson (20) and Garrott upped the anti as Reed searched for the required 6 runs per over to grab victory. Unfortunately for Reed Garrott and Robertson both fell to good catches by the home side keeper. Some late resistance from Owen Hughes (13) and Tim Tidey (11 not out) gave some brief hope of victory but Reed fell 20 short as [...]

Runs Galore In High Scoring Victory

Runs came thick and fast in a high scoring encounter at the Green. The visiting Outlaws had won the toss and inserted Reed. Benefiting with a strong order Jack Tidey was confident of setting an imposing target. Opening was William Heslam and William Mansfield. Both Williams stood firm against the Outlaws bowlers and found ways to penetrate the field before slapping it about to score freely. They had formed a promising partnership when Mansfield was caught for 15. The elder William was replaced by the ever-enthusiastic Rhod Hughes, however he came and went quickly. 43 for 2 was not quite the situation Reed had hoped for but with Mitchell Cooper joining Heslam the momentum moved back into the host's favour. Big hitting from both saw them add 125 together. Heslam continuing from where he left off the day before looked in imperious form as he closed in on three figures. It was not to be unfortunately as he was caught, just 9 runs shy. Cooper would also be lost shortly after for an impressive 66. Toby Fynn enjoying a chance in the middle order saw the opportunity to play a less aggressive but none the less positive brand of batting. Contributions from the young Richard Stuart and Matt Giblin added to Reed's ever-increasing total. However, things went to another level when Tidey came in at number 8 and in partnership with Fynn added 100 runs in the final 8 overs. Tidey was caught in the deep for 73 whilst Fynn worked the ball about to finish un-beaten with 53 classy runs to his name. 322 is not a target easily chased down, but things were becoming worrying as the Outlaws batters refused to go quietly. Garrott’s “On Fire” as he leads Third Team victory

Incredible opening spells by Matt Yates (6-2-12-1) and Joe Graves (10-2-34-1) bowling in partnership put on early pressure to the visiting Mill Hill Village. Both were rewarded with a wicket apiece although they deserved more. A third wicket thanks to Martin Johnson had the opposition struggling at 38 for 3. However, the positive Kumar (39) led a fight back by pinching singles and hitting boundaries. His wicket fell eventually in comical circumstances as he and Jenkins (17) collided running two whilst Joe Graves threw the ball in from the deep to run him out. This piece of luck proved the catalyst of a dramatic collapse as the visitors lost a further five wickets for just 28 runs. Steve Hughes (2-41) and Marcus J.E. Baker (3 for 24) benefitting from the great catching of Ben Moody, Peter Baker, Paul Garrott, Toby Emes, Jean-Marc Maujean and Zac Conley. A frustrating final partnership of 43 took the visitors to the none-the-less below par 170, the final wicket falling to the returning Johnson (2-36). A steady reply was put under pressure when three wickets fell in close succession meaning Paul Garrott was in desperate need of a partner to stick with him. M.J.E. Baker stayed with the opener as they re-started the chase and eventually began putting away the boundaries showing why Freman is a 220 plus pitch. They had added 109 together for the fourth wicket when Garrott was bowled for a superb 80 with the score on 140. Baker stayed for a while longer but was also bowled for 60 just 13 runs shy of victory. The talented pair of Moody (8 not out) and Conley (9 not out) had no trouble in knocking off the final [...]

Reed 1sts leave Botany Bay watching

Reed’s batsmen ran into form as they cruised to 302-6 against Botany Bay. In a game where five batsmen scored 50’s, Ed Wharton gave them a flying start with a quick-fire 28. Will Heslam then made the first half ton with 52 of his 56 coming in boundaries. A steady partnership of 89 between Richard Wharton (52) and Matt Sampson (59) built the foundations for an imposing total, while Rob Lankester (21) and Tom Greaves (26) added useful runs. In reply, Reed’s bowlers always had control of the visitor’s innings, despite fine knocks from Shadrach Gittens-Browne (59) and the Hussain brothers – Zawar (56) and Khalid (41). Ed Wharton’s 8 overs cost a meagre 18 runs, while Matt Sampson (5-1-18-2) ensured that the Bay batsmen never managed to keep up with the run rate. An extraordinary final over from Marcus Martin started with two massive maximums and ended with 3 wickets in 4 balls, Rob Lankester pouching the last of his 3 catches on the deep mid-wicket boundary. Botany Bay were all out for 230 after 46 overs, Reed winning by 72 runs. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Reed 2nd XI Ease Past Ampthill

Reed 2nd XI hosted Ampthill Town 2nd XI up at The Green last weekend. On a beautiful May afternoon Ampthill won the toss and chose to bowl, in an attempt to benefit from the morning’s showers. Reed’s openers got off to a good start, putting on 52 for the first wicket before Matt Bowles was bowled for 13. George Garrott fell shortly after for 5 bringing Matt Sampson to the crease. Both he and Phil Frenay accumulated runs at a steady rate, in an attempt to lay the foundations for a sizeable total on a placid pitch. Frenay finally fell for 89, 2 runs short of the hundred partnership. Reed were 160-3 with 10 overs remaining. Reed debutant George Teeboon (23) and Sampson upped the run rate before the latter was caught for 56. Both Teeboon and Karl Ward (18) swung from the hip for the final few overs and Reed ended on a slightly below par 218-6. Reed knew that they had their work cut out to restrict Ampthill on a good batting wicket. Peter Tidey (2-27) and Karl Ward (1-11) opened up proceedings in typically frugal fashion removing Ampthill’s top 3 between them. After the introduction of Owen Hughes (0-25) and Jean-Marc Maujean (0-13) drew a blank and Ampthill’s batsmen started to make inroads in to Reed’s total, Frenay turned to Sampson (3-20) and Garrott (2-35) who bowled beautifully and ended Ampthill’s hopes of getting a positive outcome for the game. All that was left was for Bowles (1-0) to collect the last wicket which resulted in a Reed victory by 84 runs. Report submitted by Phil Frenay.
