The Family Hughes claim 6 for 26 from a combined 9 overs in Reed win on Sunday

Having lost to Aston earlier in the season playing away, it was nice to get some revenge when it came to Reed's turn to host. Asked to bowl first Reed attacked with the pace of Joe Graves coming down the hill and applied the pressure with Neil Haslam coming up. Haslam made the breakthrough whilst Graves was unlucky not to come away with a wicket despite some fine bowling. Rhodri Hughes may have been surprised to be asked to be first change bowler but it proved an inspired move as his three-over spell produced three fantastic wickets. Cormac Hosie and Sam Rice then bowled in tandem during the middle overs. Both got the ball to spin and made trouble for the Aston batsman. Hosie unfortunately went wicketless whilst Rice claimed 2 for 27. Owen and Steve Hughes then finished things off for Reed, Owen claiming 2 for 5 and Steve 1 for 7. With a target of 170 Reed needed a good start. Jack Childs and veteran Peter Baker started well and were beginning to look settled for a long partnership. Unfortunately Howes bowled Childs for 15, followed swiftly by two more cheap wickets. Reed captain Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease at 33 for 3 but soon lost his father for 21. Needing help in restarting the Reed innings Rhodri Hughes duly provided the support. Both played smart cricket as they put on 61 for fifth wicket. Looking to up the ante R. Hughes (14) tried a slog sweep that brought about his downfall. Replacing him was younger brother Owen. Looking in fine touch he played a patient innings. Playing the drive and cut well in particular he helped Reed get over the [...]

Reed’s Yo-Yo season continues

Reed 1st XI hosted Langleybury 1st XI at home on Saturday. Langleybury won the toss and opted to bat first. Reed's opening bowler Ed Wharton (10-4-24-2) stormed in and had opener Corran caught behind by Sean Tidey in the third over, leaving Langleybury 10 for 1. A solid stand of 41 then developed between R.Soulsby (51) and N.Amin (19) before Wharton bowled Amin for 19. Soulsby continued with S.Knox (19) taking the score to 95 for 3 after 28 overs. Tom Greaves (15-4-37-3) brought himself into the attack and soon had Knox LBW followed by W.Oxley (5). Meanwhile Alex Mutucumarana (12.4-51-51-5) was brought into the attack bowling his leg spin and quickly got rid of A.Gunning (10). Greaves and Mutucumarana then ran through the rest of the Langleybury batting order leaving them 173 all out in 49.4 overs. Reed were left with 65 overs to chase down the Langleybury total which should have been very gettable with no demons apparent in the pitch. However Langleybury bowled very tightly and Reed struggled to find the boundary and were 15 of 0 after 7 overs. William Heslam (5) soon fell to T.Brall and Tom Greaves followed soon after. James Heslam (38) then put on a stand of 30 with Chris Jackson (19) and Reed looked in control, but Jackson then got out with the score on 54 followed by S. Tidey and Mutucumarana without troubling the scorer and Reed were in trouble at 54 for 5. Ed Wharton kept Reed's hopes alive with a cultured 25, but when he went the tail folded and Reed were bowled out for 97 with 35 overs remaining. The main damage was done by R.Oxley (8.5-1-33-4) and M.Corran (8-3-27-4) who both [...]

Johnson enjoys another day in the sun

Captain Bowman won the toss and invited Old Owens to bat. It was a toil in the field, with the opening batsmen making slow but steady progress, with their top 4 all getting starts of 17, 35, 36 and 58 (not out). Only 4 wickets fell in the innings, as Old Owens reached 178 in 42 overs. This was helped by some dropped catches in the field, and a few decisions being given in favour of the batsmen. The bowling was shared around 7 players, with Martin Johnson returning the best figures (8-1-29-2). Reed changed wicketkeepers at the drinks interval with Ward taking over from Bowman behind the stumps. After tea, supplied by the Bowman family and taken in the fresh air under the Freman gazebo, Reed started slowly but steadily just like Old Owens. Peter Baker preferring to score in singles and Johnson preferring to hit the odd boundary. Many times were the Baker call of “one run” heard this afternoon. The first wicket fell at 129 in the 23rd over, with Baker (43) being caught off the bowling of Tyler, having found the boundary 4 times but playing a good support role to Johnson. Johnson meantime had reached his 50 and batted on to finish 101 not out. His innings included thirteen 4s and three 6s, although he was given a few chances being dropped 3 times during his innings. Ward (one ear listening for that phone call) ensuring Johnson reached his hundred after hitting 10 in two boundary shots. Johnson having just returned from 2 weeks’ holiday. Reed won the game in the 32nd over, reaching 179 for the loss of only two wickets at the “Freman Oval”. Report submitted by Steve [...]

Reed bounce back into the top five

Reed 1st XI travelled to Hemel Hempstead on July 30th and won convincingly in the Herts Premier League Championship. Reed won the toss and opted to bat on what looked to be a greenish wicket. However Hemel put on an opening partnership of 59 between Ilangorante (36) and Melbourne (35). From this point the day belonged to Toby Fynn (20 overs, 5 maidens, 4 wickets for 52 runs) and Tom Greaves (14.4-4-4-43). Wickets continued to tumble with Hemel being reduced to 111 for 9. However, a last wicket partnership of 25 saw Hemel bowled out for 136. A total Reed should easily have been able to chase down with 70 overs to bat. Nevertheless, Reed looked in real trouble at six for three after four overs, having lost both Heslam brothers and Tom Greaves. But this brought Chris Jackson (62 not out) and Alex Mutucumarana (30) to the wicket. Mutumacarana threw caution to the wind and scored a rapid 30 before he was caught by Waterton off Hodgins but he had put Reed in the driving seat at 54 for 4. This brought Ed Garrott to the wicket who played an excellent innings of 27 before he was run out with Reed needing just 17 runs for victory. Meanwhile Chris Jackson played a masterful innings guiding Reed safely home to claim an important victory. Next weekend Reed face in-form Langleybury at home in what should be an intriguing contest between two closely matched teams. Report submitted by RMR.

Double joy as the Fynns Win at President’s Day

Brothers, Julien and Toby Fynn, celebrated success in the Reed CC 2016 President's Day Double-Wicket Competition held on Sunday 31st July. Having won their respective pools of round-robin matches, the Fynns met William Heslam and Ollie Benham in the Final. Each pair of batsmen started with 100 runs and faced 4 overs, 2 each bowled by their opponents. Dismissals attracted penalty runs so it proved costly when Will & Ollie, who batted first, lost wickets. They achieved a Net Total of 123. Although the Fynns surpassed that total during the last over, they then had to negotiate the remaining deliveries without being dismissed to be sure of the win. Julien duly blocked-out and victory was theirs. President Andrew Emms made the presentation to the winners then thanked those who had organised the event and helped throughout the day. The crowd had been witness to some audacious batting shots, big-hitting, tight bowling and athletic catching and fielding.

A poor result despite promising performances

A weekend of incredibly poor availability for a variety of legitimate reasons meant that the two’s hosted St Albans with a weaker than usual side. However, Tim Tidey skippering the side preferred to look at the situation as a fantastic opportunity for a number of talented players to prove themselves at a higher standard. Jack Caine (12) and Richard Johnson (13) opened the Reed innings and were just starting to make their mark when Johnson edged behind a good delivery giving the visitors their first wicket. Two more soon followed leaving Reed struggling at 35 for 3. Marcus J.E. Baker came out at number 5 to join Reed's 14 year old protégé Mike Catt. The pair was patient in waiting for the bad balls to pick up their runs and gradually with some time a partnership began to form. The young Mike Catt was certainly impressing with a display of good technique and temperament. Baker eventually started to bludgeon a few balls to the boundary and was looking set for a big and dominant innings when the slightest of edges was taken behind with Baker walking back to the pavilion for 29. Catt continued his steady innings before unexpectedly missing one, leaving the field also for 29. Only George Garrott (12) and Pete Tidey (12*) made it into double figures as Reed's innings ended well short of a par score on 134. Going all out to take ten wickets Reed's young fielders put in a dedicated and spirited performance in support of their bowlers. Pete Tidey showed a lot of fight and gave perhaps his best performance of the year removing the St Albans opener, bowling 15-4-29-1. Karl Ward also gave his best despite going [...]

Poor reply leaves the Thirds well adrift

Reed III versus Luton Town & Indians IV at Freman College on Saturday 30th July 2016. Luton Town & Indians batsmen never really cashed-in on the notoriously high-scoring Freman Oval pitch and although five of them passed 20, none reached 40. In fact, their final total of 231 all-out was well below par. James Crouchman, Brenden Salter and Josh Conley found success with the ball by taking two wickets each, and Neil Haslam (1 for 39 off 13 overs) was economic in comparison to an overall rate of 4.6 runs per over. Remarkably, Reed’s fielders held on to 8 catches whilst none were dropped. Initially excited at having a “gettable” target, Reed soon found themselves in trouble at 19 for 2. From there, they couldn’t put together a partnership that would have been crucial to the cause. Crouchman was top-scorer with 19 and Salter, J. Conley and Ben Moody were the only other ones to record double figures. LTICC used only two bowlers throughout. Seamer Rickesh Patel taking 6 for 43 and Rahul Patel 4 for 38 with his leg-breaks. Including 13 extras, Reed were bowled-out for a poor 94. Reed III (10 points) lost to Luton Town & Indians IV (30 points) by 137 runs. Report submitted by PGB.

Garrott steadying influence throughout the innings h

Reed IV were inserted by Preston with an immediate reward, Matt Yates (0) falling second ball. Paul Garrott (89) was a steadying influence throughout the innings being the last wicket to fall, which then resulted in a declaration. Bill Mansfield (18) and Lloyd Bowman (23) were the only other batmen to enter double digits. Mansfield was unlucky, caught on the boundary as the fielder reached overhead. Garrott and Bowman having a mid-innings stand of 49. Runs were always being hard to collect with only 17 boundaries and Reed finishing on 179 for 8 off 40.4 overs. We have to thank Preston for a sumptuous tea. If runs were hard to collect, so were wickets, Yates and Ed Kershaw opened the bowling and were economical with 39 off the first 11 overs. A change of bowling, saw Steve Hughes collect the wicket of the Preston captain with his first ball. With young Cormac Hosie (5-0-33-1) collecting a wicket in his last over, just displacing the bail. Meanwhile Hughes (12-1-33-3) was bowling economical from the other end, collecting 2 more wickets, one thanks to a catch at mid-off by Bowman. Jack Wilkerson (4-0-19-0) and Sam Rice (4-0-21-0) both had short spells, but remained wicket less. Yates (9-2-20-1) returned for 2 overs and collected a deserved wicket, giving Mansfield his second catch of the game behind the wickets. The game finished as a draw with Preston being 157 for 5 at the close of the match. An enjoyable match, played in a very good spirit, with Reed certainly having the younger side and earning some needed league points. Thanks again to Jerry Yates for his support, and being the match scorer. Report submitted by Steve Hughes.

Garrott Gets Reed Going

George Garrott put in a crucial performance with the ball to get Reed back to winning ways. The victory released a measure of the tension that has been building with recent results not going in Reed's favour. The toss won, Marcus Martin elected to bat first and let hosts Hemel Hempstead suffer under the hot July sun. However, it was Reeds opening batsman who were feeling the heat as the opening salvos had them in trouble. The loss of a wicket brought Reed's vice-captain Phil Frenay to the crease who stamped his authority on the match with an almighty biff down the ground first ball. There on, the partnership of Frenay and prolific batsman Richard Johnson added 66 attacking runs. Johnson’s loss for 29 brought Martin to the crease who wasted little time in scoring runs as he and his deputy added a further 44 to the cause. The introduction of spin proved a crucial factor as Frenay was bowled for 49. For a time Martin had to be patient and wait for the bad ball. Things were turning in Reed's favour when Martin’s captain's knock ended, chopping on for 45. Injecting some energy into Reed's innings was the ever-enthusiastic Rhodri Hughes whose unique style proved perfect for the situation. He and the talented all-rounder Jack Caine ran rings around Hemel with quick and daring running and boundary hitting. It was an impressive display of youthful confidence and fitness. Caine (22) and Hughes (29) took Reed to a final score of 237 for 8. An early wicket to Pete Tidey removed Hemel’s captain. Jack Caine opening from the other ended bowled perhaps his finest spell of the year and although wicketless it put huge pressure [...]

Top-of-the-table Letchworth defeat Reed

Reed 1st XI hosted top of the table Letchworth Garden City in the Herts Premier League Championship on Saturday July 23rd. Reed captain Tom Greaves won the toss and opted to bat on a hot day on the flattest of tracks. However, tight Letchworth bowling saw Reed score at 3 an over for the first 50 overs for 3 wickets down. Brothers William, (64), and James Heslam, (57), both contributed well, but Reed were unable to kick-on in the middle overs and found themselves having to accelerate in the last ten. Sean Tidey, (20 not out), and Mitchell Cooper, (20), both scored quickly to take Reed to 238 for 7 off their allotted 60 overs. However this was clearly going to be a difficult total for Reed to defend. In reply, Letchworth got off to a rapid start, but Reed had Aitchenhead, (12), caught Tidey, bowled Ed Wharton in the fourth over with Letchworth on 22. Chahal, (35), and Bates, (51), then rebuilt the innings with a stand of 45, taking them to 81 for two in the 17th over. This brought hard-hitting Maxwell Pipe to the crease who proceeded to score 78 not out and take Letchworth over the line in 50 overs with 5 overs to spare. Ed Wharton (16 overs, 1 maiden, 4 wickets for 72 runs) tried his heart out, supported by Tom Greaves (12-0-2-49), but in between too many loose balls were bowled by the five other bowlers used and Letchworth cruised to victory thanks to Pipe's powerful stroke play. Reed meet Hemel Hempstead away this Saturday. Report submitted by RMR.
