Reed 1st XI secure important win!

Reed 1st XI got back to winning ways and secured an important win vs West Herts on Saturday with an impressive and hard fought performance. Given the torrential rain Thursday night it was no surprise when West Herts elected to bowl first and conditions weren’t easy for batting throughout the game and certainly early on. Reed got off to a slow but reasonably solid start of 22-0 off 9 overs before James Heslam went for just 7. However this brought Alex Mutucumarana to the crease who immediately added impetus which along with Will Heslam (32) who started to find the boundary took Reed nicely along to 70-1 off 25 overs. Although Heslam then fell stumped and Chris Jackson went in unfortunate circumstances for 9, Stuart Smith and Mutucumarana who hit 2 towering sixes took Reed along to 124-3 off 42 overs in a good position to accelerate. Unfortunately Mutucumarana went shortly after for an excellent 60 and with Cooper also a little unfortunate Reed needed more runs. This came in the form of Sean (18) and Jack Tidey (27) who with a combination of hitting into gaps and some lusty blows batted well with Smith (23) who had taken up the important anchor role. Reed innings came to a close at 196 all out in the 59th over. West Herts had 56 overs to chase down the runs and Reed knew they would need to bowl and field extremely well. That is exactly what they did as the returning Jack Tidey (1-48) and Toby Fynn (3-41) both bowled superbly with pace and direction. Reed 2nd XI power their way to 30 points

It was a case of get your man down and keep him down as Reed powered to victory against visiting Wheathampstead. Marcus Martin had won the toss and put in the opposition. The first wicket fell in the first over to Tom Walsingham and things did not get much better for the visitors after that. To their credit they tried their best to be stubborn and hang in for as long as possible but it was all in vain. Walsingham (7-3-10-2) and Peter Tidey (15-7-25-3) had started proceedings. Whilst Martin (6-3-6-2) and Karl Ward (14-4-26-3) followed after them. The fielding although not at its best was good when it counted and several hard catches were hung onto. A target of 76 proved no obstacle for Ed Garrott (42*) and Richard Johnson (31*) who quickly smashed Reed to victory in 10.2 overs. The win will prove a huge confidence boost after a frustrating couple of weeks. The mood in the team remains high and with gap between Reed and title rivals Old Chomelians decreasing things are looking really good for Reed.

‘The Big O’ and ‘Golden Graham’ key to brilliant victory

Reed showed all of their great skill in the field to bring about a victory against visitors Chigwell. The first innings however, had been somewhat disappointing for the home side as a batting card full of talent made a below par target. Reed had quickly slumped to 20 for 3 after deciding to bat first. The bowling of Kerr and Hannant proved good enough to get on top of the top order. A stubborn fight back came from Rhodri Hughes and John Kershaw got Reed back in the game. They saw off the openers and began to build a platform for the rest of the team. However, disaster struck as both Hughes (22) and Kershaw (26) fell either side of drinks. The score was on a precarious 67 for 5 when team captain Marcus J.E. Baker came to the crease. He and Ben Moody had to completely restart the Reed innings which they did with due diligence. The change bowlers were found to be easier to get away as Moody and Baker got the board ticking again. Moody (13) eventually was bowled ending his crucial knock but it made way for the big hitting Jack Tidey (17) to come to the crease. Again Tideys runs proved crucial in the last few overs. As Reed began to run out of overs Baker began to swing harder and was able to make a chanceless 66 not out as he steered his side to 169 for 8. At the start of the second innings young Owen Hughes made sure his ‘Iron Boots’ were done up as tight as his bowling. Headlines – 18th / 19th July

West Herts won the toss and invited the 1st XI to bat. Scoring 196 all-out, the 1sts had a comfortable 31 run victory as W-H were bowled out for 165. Phil Lill was in the wickets again. The Firsts are 6th in the Championship now. Marcus Martin’s 2nd XI marched on with a home win against lowly Wheathampstead. The visitors were shot-out for only 76. There were 3 wickets each for Pete Tidey & Karl Ward, and 2 wickets each for Marcus Martin & Tom Walsingham. Ed Garrott (42 not out) and Richard Johnson (31 n.o.) had no difficulty knocking off the required 77 runs in only 10 overs to win by 10 wickets. The 2nds retain second place in Division 5B. The Thirds travelled to Harpenden where they won the toss and batted first. Baz Curtis and Matt Bowles reached the thirties and later Owen Hughes and Adrian Woodcock boosted the total to 179 for 9 in an undefeated 10th wicket partnership of 64 as the innings closed. Reed earned some welcome bonus points as Harpenden lost 7 wickets before they reached their target, four of them falling to Swetank Khambhat. The 4th XI did not have a league fixture and their friendly against Mayfield was cancelled. However, their position at the top of the Division was unaffected. On Sunday, the visiting Chigwell bowlers restricted Reed to 169 for 8 but then found runs hard to find themselves as they reached only 109 in reply. Reed's captain, Marcus Baker, had led the way with 66 not out with the bat and Jack Tidey took 4 for 14 with the ball. Charlie steps-up as the Under 11s win at Foxton

Wow, Reed U11s needed 2 wickets off the last over to win and to concede no runs against Foxton U11s on Thursday. Charlie Walters was given the honour to bowl it. Crucially, 4 dot balls followed by a Bowled on the penultimate ball left one wicket needed off the last delivery. And he Bowled him! Two-in-Two off the last 2 balls for victory. Amazing! Charlie ended with figures of 3-14 off 3 overs. Remarkably he is only 8-years-old. Well-done the Under 11s.

Chipolatas beat Pickles! Quiz result.

The summer Quiz took place on Friday with five teams participating. The "Braughing Chipolatas" won a close fought contest and "One in the Pickle Barrel" came second. In a kind gesture, the B-Cs (the Walsingham and Hughes families) donated their prize money to the Club – thank you. Thanks also go to Professor Matt Bowles who organized the event and asked the questions - (with a little assistance from his advisers at Google).

New Covers Prove Their Worth Ensuring Completed Fixture

Three rain delays were suffered at The Green but none the less Reed were able to get in their fixture against Knebworth Blue and picked up a good victory in the process. Batting first Reeds opening pair of Mitchell Cooper and Owen Hughes made a fantastic platform with a 57 run partnership. Cooper (38) hit some impressive sixes and looked untroubled but ultimately paid the price for trying to get over long-on’s head. Rob Lankester took little time to start scoring, he too was hitting some nice boundaries as again another fifty plus partnership was made. Reed were dominating when drinks were taken. However, during this time the rain came and shelter was needed. This was the first of two rain delays during the first innings, it was agreed after the second that due to the time lost the game would be reduced to just 32 overs each. This left Owen Hughes 7 overs to bring up his maiden half century. He had maintained composed and played to his strengths. After Lankester (32) a series of partners had chipped in as Hughes steered Reed to a defendable total. It was however, in the rush for runs that Hughes found himself run out for a fantastic 42. Although disappointed he can take solace in the knowledge that if he applies himself he can and will make the big scores his potential promises. Some quick runs from Jack Caine (21) helped Reed to their final total of 178 for 7. Caine then started the defence by opening up the hill. Disappointment for 1st XI

Reed were disappointed on Saturday at home to Shenley Village as they lost by 5 wickets. The visitors won the toss and put Reed into bat. With a little bit in the wicket after overnight rain this looked a good decision particularly when despite another reasonable opening partnership between James (18) and Will Heslam (42) Reed then collapsed to 75-6 in the 23rd over. Although the lower middle order of Sean Tidey (22), Mitchell Cooper (27*) and Phil Lill (17) improved matters for Reed it wasn’t long before the home side were all out for 156 with the battling Cooper unfortunately running out of partners. Reeds cause was not helped by the availability to Shenley of Northants U19 bowler Charlie Clarke who took 5-52 in decent seam bowling conditions. In reply Reed needed early wickets which they got but unfortunately chasing a small target Shenley scored runs freely except off Tom Walsingham who along with Tom Greaves helped reduce Shenley to 29-2 off 5 overs. However the fast scoring continued through the Shenley innings so despite other breakthroughs by Cooper, Toby Fynn and Lill the visitors reached 159-5 in quick time with state New Zealander cricketer Tom Bruce top scoring with 51. Reed will be firmly looking to bounce back when they travel to West Herts for an important game this Saturday.

League leaders leave Reed reeling

Reed III’s lost out to league leaders Berkhamsted II’s in an entertaining game at Freman College on Saturday. Reed captain Mike Robertson lost the toss and his side were asked to bat on what proved to be an excellent cricket wicket. Berkhamsted’s fiery opening bowling soon had Reed in trouble as openers Barlow (0) and Willoughby (2) were removed inside the first fiver overs, along with Tidey (1). This left the home side in real trouble on 9-3 when Rhodri Hughes and Matt Bowles came to the crease. Hughes and Bowles set about weathering the early storm and soon had the Reed innings back on track, mixing solid defence and good stroke play. Both batsmen saw off the opening pair and soon punished the Berkhamsted change bowling as they added 96 runs for the 4th wicket when Bowles was stumped for 40. Hughes (51) meanwhile had reached his first half century for the team this season, but his sensible and mature knock also came to an abrupt end as the introduction of spin began to pay off for the visitors. Reed then suffered a second mini collapse as 104-3 became 106-7 with Khamblat (5) and Naeem (1) being dismissed soon after Hughes and Bowles. However Skipper Robertson then led a superb counter attack, ably supported by veteran Bernie Morss (8). Robertson played some masterful strokes as he plundered 11 boundaires on his way to 53 Not Out. Unfortunately for Reed, once Morss was bounced out by the returning openers, nobody was able to sustain any partnership with Robertson as Reed’s tail was swiftly dismissed leaving the home side all out for 175 in under 45 Overs.
