3rd XI Fall Short of the Mark

Reed III's played host to Waltham X Rosedale for the match that marked the mid-point in the season. The visitors, on winning the toss, chose to bat, putting Reed into the field in the blistering heat. Woodcock and Graves (9-1-33-0) began the attack with opener Moore (7) failing first. No. 3 Budhrasa (20) came to the crease and attacked the bowling, O. Hughes (6-0-17-0) managed to contain the aggression, but it was Robertson (8-0-49-1) who finally got the next breakthrough. Adler (32) and Waller (51) behan to build a partnership, until retuning Woodcock outfoxed Waller, and shortly after, Adler. Confusion at the crease saw the dismissal of C. Winter (6). Once again a partnership began, as Sutherland and H. Winter became increasingly aggressive. The partnership was finally broken with a deft bit of bowling from Pallett (11-1-63-2) saw H. WInter's (21) bails dislodged. Chntler (5) did not last long before becoming Pallett's second victim. As the 53rd over was completed Sutherland (50*) and J. Winter (9*) remained undefeated, having given Waltham X a healthy total of 226. The home side began the chase, however Willoughby (15) was stumped off the bowling of McCreevy (8-1-27-1). Reed then suffered a slight collapse with Kahambhat (0) and R. Hughes (0) falling in quick succession. Bowles came to the crease, and rallied the side, supporting opener Barlow. However Bowles (22) could not maintain the support, falling to H. Winter. Naeem (9) had a short flurry at the crease but became another victim of Budhrasa. Robertson (8) also followed suite, continuing the collapse. O. Hughes looked to salvage the situation, and support Barlow, but was stumped becoming Budhrasa's (15-3-52-5) fifth victim. Still, the tail wagged, as Pallett looked to close [...]

T-Ms’ mixed XI prove too strong for Reed’s Fourths

This week Reed 4th XI took a break from league fixtures, to play an away 45/45 friendly against a Totteridge Milhillians side, who were scouting the strength of the lower divisions with a view of entering a team into the same league next season. Clear blue skies greeted Reed who won the toss and skipper Bowman opted to bowl first. With Julien Fynn (7-2-11-0) and Zac Conley (9-0-42-0) opening the bowling, the opposition found it hard to find runs on a large boundary with a slow outfield. However wickets were also difficult to find, and the Totteridge opening partnership of M. Pratt (15) and Bhardia (42) slowly put runs on the board. The first breakthrough came after a change of bowling, with Kieren Willoughby catching a loose shot from Bhardia off Mansfield’s (7-0-49-1) bowling and Reed’s new man Martin Johnson (9-1-32-1) introducing himself to the club bowling tight lines and dismissing M. Pratt. As the runs ticked over Reed still couldn’t find the wickets, not helped by two regulation catches being dropped by a returning player. More changes of bowling brought on another debutant, Ewan Rees (6-0-20-0), and returning spinner, M.H. Naeem (7-0-40-3). Despite 3 wickets from Naeem and a run-out from some quick fielding by Willoughby, the hosts managed to bat out their 45 overs putting on 224-6. Following a tea which was supplemented by left-overs from a party next door, openers P. Baker and S. Hoye looked to put together a partnership on which Reed could build upon. Hoye (14) was first to go after 10 overs, run out after looking for a quick single. This was the catalyst for a mini collapse as Baker (18) was bowled, then G. Adams (0) was [...]

Mansfield leads run chase as Reed 4th XI win again

Reed IVs welcomed Stevenage to Freman College at the weekend. Despite some cloud cover the match began on time with Reed being asked to field by the opposition. Jack Childs and Zac Conley opened the bowling with Childs getting an early breakthrough from an improvised catch from Roberts at slip via wicket-keeper Bowman’s chin! Stevenage went at a steady rate with mistakes in the field giving them easy runs. After 47 overs Stevenage set a total of 222 for 8 for Reed to chase down. After patching himself up, a special mention must go to skipper Bowman who carried-on with great enthusiasm. Baker and Hoy opened up for Reed but Hoy went early, bowled by a “dipper” for 0. This brought Bill Mansfield to the crease who began to punish the bowlers from the start. In-form Peter Baker (22) was then lost bringing Zac Conley to the crease who typically from the offset began to hit the bowlers around the ground. Conley (24) was lost relatively cheaply which meant Reed were 101 – 3. Contributions from Bowman (5), G. Adam (17) and Childs (12) set the game up for a close finish which was eventually finished by Ian Roberts (19 not out) and Mansfield with a terrific (80 not out), and with 6 overs unused. This means Reed IV keep their unbeaten run in the league going. Importantly, they maintain their lead at the top of the Division at the halfway stage of the season.

Reed’s 3rd XI hold on for the draw

Reed III's travelled to Hertford for the eighth game of the league season, Hertford elected to bat after winning the toss, sending the Reed boys out into the blazing sun. Woodcock and Robertson opened the bowling, with Robertson removing Giblett (0) and Orchard (0) in successive overs the pair bowled tight lines, however Beale and Spring began to build a partnership.. Youngsters Fitzgerald (9-3-25-0) and Owen Hughes (5-0-16-0) both bowled tidy spells, but it was the bowling of Pallet that broke the partnership as Beale (29) was caught by the safe handed Owen Hughes. Timms (2) became Pallett's (8-0-37-2) second victim, and confusion between the batsmen caused Codd (8) to be run out. Hertford stood at 107- 5, however the tenacious Spring was joined at the crease by Horton, who steadily increased the run rate. The pair continued to attack the bowlers, despite some crafty spin from Khambhat (5-0-33-0), until spring reached the last of his lives, bing caught by Robertson off the bowling of Woodcock. A will held catch in the deep by Fitzgerald saw Woodcock 14-3-47-2) pick up his second wicket,, Riddle, departing for just 3. Kildare (9*) and Benham (1*) finished the innings undefeated, leavin Hertford 200-8 from their 53 overs. It was Willoughby and R.Hughes that began the run chase, setting off steadily against the pin-point accuracy of Benham and Kildare. Willoughby (18) was caught beautifully in the deep by Timms off the bowling of Benham (12-0-35-3), who quickly picked up the wickets of Fitzgerald (4) and Bowles (5). Kildare (9-2-32-0) continued to bowl well, but Khambhat began to find his range attacking the new bowlers Riddle and Orchard. Hughes (25) fell victim to Riddle's (5-1-20-1) left arm pace, bringing the [...]

A Fynn line between success and failure!

Reed gained an important win on Saturday as they avoided the wet weather to win their 4th game out of 6 in the Herts Championship. Given the weather forecast and a wicket that would offer the bowlers some assistance skipper Heslam had no hesitation in electing to field despite missing opening bowler Jack Tidey through injury. Toby Fynn was delighted to take the new ball and immediately caused the Chorleywood top order problems with his pace and direction. It wasn’t long before he rushed opener Rose into a mistimed pull shot and then had Aspinall well caught behind by Sean Tidey. Mitchell Cooper also impressed bowling with good zip and getting a well deserved wicket as Chorleywood were set back at 55-3. The introduction of spinner Tom Greaves to the attack tightened Reed’s grip on the game as he bowled with flight and guile and alongside Fynn and Mutucumarana put a squeeze on reducing the home side to 115-6 at lunch. Reed were determined to continue the attack after the interval and Fynn (18-58-5) and Greaves (14.3-39-4) completed the job as Chorleywood were all out for 150 in 45 overs. Reed changed the batting order slightly to accommodate the declining weather conditions and despite an early loss Greaves (44) scored freely at number 3 and put on 60 with Heslam (21) for the 2nd wicket in quick time. Although both went soon after, Mutucumarana played calmly for a classy 26 putting Reed in control at 116-4. However there were rain interruptions occurring which made it difficult for the Reed batsman including not knowing how many risks to take to score the runs quickly. When Stuart Smith and Cooper were taken off for a lengthy rain [...]

Conley and Baker score tons as Reed win again!

After a week off from league action due to the weather, Reed IV’s welcomed Hertford V’s to Freman College. Despite the looming dark clouds and occasional drizzle the match began with Reed being asked to bat first in the first ‘timed’ fixture of the season. Peter Baker and Alan Ward opened up for Reed and scored runs quickly from the offset before Ward was caught for 16. When John Kershaw was lost cheaply Reed were 40-2 from the first 6 overs bringing Mas Naeem to the crease and he played several fantastic shots as he and Baker went about rebuilding the innings and put on 102 for the third wicket with both batsmen bringing up there half centuries. When Naeem was lost for a superb 55, this brought the inform Zac Conley to the crease who typically from the offset began scoring freely punishing the bowlers and quickly brought up his fifty and was continually well supported by Baker . Zac Conley (114*) was then remarkably first to bring up his century and was soon followed by Peter Baker (102*) as the pair put-on 177 for the fourth wicket whilst Reed reached a mammoth 318-3 by the 37th over before tea was taken early due to a downpour. During the interval, the skipper Bowman declared and after a relatively long delay Reed returned to the field with an amended 44 overs to take 10 wickets. Considering the conditions Hertford’s resistance was very good and Reed were frustrated for long periods by Gibift (46) and more so Reddy (71). Wickets were shared among the bowlers including the returning Owen Hughes as well as Ed Kershaw and Zac Conley. However two excellent spells from Jack Childs (7-4-16-2) [...]

Reed 3rd XI crush division leaders

Reed III's travelled to Dame Alice Owens School to face league leaders Potters Bar, on a day when the weather was ever threatening. After winning the toss the Potters Bar Skipper chose to bat, with openers Deshan (12) and Rohan (4) looking to make quick runs, however the precision bowling of Woodcock and Graves (6-1-18-2) resulted in both batsmen being trapped LBW. Lewis (0) and Taylor (0) quickly had their stumps rattled by the pacey bowling attack. Tiron looked to make a stand but the wickets continued to fall, as confusion at the crease resulted in Harries (0) being run out. Tiron (7) soon after was caught by Robertson in the covers to give Woodcock (11-3-20-3) his third wicket. Robertson (5-3-5-2) bowled a short spell dismissing Franklin (3) and Duke (0), however a stand by Taylor and Silvey slowed the collapse of the Potters bar line up. It was the bamboozling spin of Pallet (3-1-7-1) that broke the partnership trapping Silvey (8) LBW. The innings was closed with Morss (4.3-1-14-1) taking the wicket of Barnes (1), leaving an undefeated Taylor (20) at the crease, and Potters Bar with a total of 65. Reed, with the weather looking to take a turn for the worse decided to follow on, opening with Curtis and Rob Willoughby who scored freely from the start. Youngster Duke (4-0-31-0) was getting the ball to shape nicely, but it was Barnes (5-0-24-1) who managed to get the breakthrough, clean bowling Willoughby (15), however the damage had been done with Khambhat (7*) and Curtis (38*) knocking off the runs in just 10.5 overs. The victory for Reed broke their spell of poor performances to put them back on track for a shot at [...]

Potential Realised, Promise for the future, Rob “Rooty” Lankester makes maiden century

A fantastic knock by Rob Lankester stood out in what was a very impressive batting performance by several up and coming club players. The day started with Reed skipper Marcus J.E. Baker winning the toss and electing to bat against the visiting Preston. Paul Garrott got things going in the right way with two boundaries from the first two balls. He unfortunately fell, playing on, early bringing Rob “Rooty” Lankester to the crease. His first scoring shot showed great intent with an all run 5 (no over throws involved). His partner in this enterprise was the athletic Rhodri Hughes who’s innings began in a positive fashion. The pair ran aggressively making 38 in close to no time when Hughes missed on a big score, bowled for 22. Tom Nussey chipped in an impressive 12 before playing on and Owen Hughes 7. Meanwhile Lankester looked in assured form. Never looking in danger he kicked on past 50 now partnered with the enthusiastic Ben Moody. Quick running and precise shot selection allowed them to keep the total ticking over regularly. Moody batted superbly for his 31 playing the supporting role to Lankester who off his 88th ball reached his maiden century. It was an epic innings of great maturity and skill. Given the opportunity to prove himself he showed what an excellent prospect he is for the club. He finished undefeated for 122 with Reeds final total 247 for 6. Matt Giblin bowled through his 8 overs coming down the hill and picked up two early wickets looking back near his best. Matt Yates, coming up the hill, also looked in good form. Baker replaced him and claimed a wicket thanks to a catch in the deep. [...]

Lankaster, Willoughby and Lankaster Represent Club Well

Previous to this game Reeds Sunday Friendly XI had played three, won two, lost one. Having analysed these matches Reeds skipper Marcus J.E. Baker came to the conclusion that whether a win or a loss, whether close finishing or not, all three games entertained till the end. Reeds fourth fixture fell into line with this trend. With The Green occupied with Village cup game against Langlebury Reeds second pitch was used to host Hertford at Freman College, Buntingford. Hertford legend Eric Riddle won the toss and chose to bat first. As usual runs were a-plenty on Freman’s quick outfield. Despite the visitors early success they were kept in check by the two wickets from Joe Graves and the superb line and movement of Jonathan Lankaster. Making his debut for Reed the youngster enticed the edge more the once for several close and missed chances. Taking pace off the ball seemed to slow down Hertford as Reed protected the boundaries. Sam Rice also managed to take two wickets with him whilst M.J.E. Baker chipped in with one himself. The slow bowlers had brought Reed back into the game. However, at the crease was the veteran Riddle who played a captains knock and reached three figures before the innings close. Ed Kershaw took the only other wicket to fall thanks to a sharp stumping from Rob Lankaster. Hertford’s 255 for 6 was about par for the ground which the Reed batsman kept in mind as they started their reply. However, the reply never really got going. After an early loss R. Lankaster had to work hard with opener Rob Willoughby to keep Reed up with the run rate. Their quick running gave the hosts the platform to [...]
